  • In this video, I show you how to troubleshoot the cold control or thermostat on your Whirlpool Refrigerator. If your food is freezing in the refrigerator compartment or the whole machine is not cooling at all, the cold control thermostat cold be defective.
The cold control is located behind the refrigerator temperature control knob. It has two wires that attach to it and it tells the compressor and the evaporator fan when to turn on and off.
Here is where you can order appliance parts

Bill, This is the best tutorial for troubleshooting the temperature control knob I have ever seen. To show you how naive I am I just assumed the Freezer control knob made the freezer colder or warmer whichever way you turned the knob. Now I know the refrigerator knob does it. The knobs should display a better way of saying that. My problem is the refrigerator is freezing everything so I am turning the Freezer knob to the default setting and I'll see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't I'll be ordering a new Refrigerator cold control knob from you. Again thank you for an excellent video.

I appreciate your “real-time” tutorials. For most of us, it’s our first (and only) time, we’re scared to death, and we go slow. Watching you take your time, allows me to take my time. Eventually I get the job done and look like a hero to my family. You’ve got the touch of a great teacher. Thank you for making these videos.

Thanks Bill. This is EXACTLY what I needed. I have a customer who banged the bottom of the control box when it would shut down and it would work for a day and then she'd have to do it all over again. I diagnosed it correctly but couldn't figure out how to get the control box apart to get to those two horizontal screws so I could get to the cold control. You gave me the missing piece! Great job and thank you for your service to our country!

Bill, I's like to say 1,000 thank you's for your tutorial on the Whirlpool side-by-side no cooling situation!!! I know a thing or 2 about controls and appliances myself but your real-time tutorials are a HUGE time saver and I thank you for them. I used the link to try and buy the parts. Hopefully, they kicked some $$ your way (though I could not tell if it did or not). Thanks again! Elliott S.

Great video! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You saved me a lot of money on repairs. Got the part on eBay for $9. Had to adjust that little calibration screw though on it to make it less cold. As some have commented, these replacement thermostats seem to be calibrated to the maximum cold setting making your fridge ice up even on 1 or lower on the dial. About a 3/4 clockwise turn solved this problem for me.

Thank you, Bill! The thermostat I received was not precisely the same as original so I had to bend the wire prongs a little. You made the process understandable and your video showed the steps clearly. It took me forever but at least the refer food defrosted while I got it done. Haha! The refer is again cooling and I can see if temp is spot on in the morning. Thank you from a girl with tools.

It stayed like that for about 10 hrs. So now the freezer has to be put on 5 (highest setting) so it can keep freezing. Hope this takes care of the problem.

Hi Bill, excellent video, right speed, not too slow, neither too fast, just at the right speed. The metal wire does not have "freon" or the modern day refrigerant, which is most likely R-134a, less harmful to the ozone layer like freon. The metal wire should contain an inert gas that expands and contracts with temperature controlling the "coldness" of the fridge.
