- In this video, I show you how to troubleshoot the cold control or thermostat on your Whirlpool Refrigerator. If your food is freezing in the refrigerator compartment or the whole machine is not cooling at all, the cold control thermostat cold be defective.
The cold control is located behind the refrigerator temperature control knob. It has two wires that attach to it and it tells the compressor and the evaporator fan when to turn on and off.
Here is where you can order appliance parts

It is great to have someone willing to take the time to do a step by step process in their videos.
Thanks Bill. Now I can repair it while my husband is at work. 😁
Bill, This is the best tutorial for troubleshooting the temperature control knob I have ever seen. To show you how naive I am I just assumed the Freezer control knob made the freezer colder or warmer whichever way you turned the knob. Now I know the refrigerator knob does it. The knobs should display a better way of saying that. My problem is the refrigerator is freezing everything so I am turning the Freezer knob to the default setting and I'll see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't I'll be ordering a new Refrigerator cold control knob from you. Again thank you for an excellent video.
5 years later this Video has saved me time and heartache trying to figure out how to change the Themostat in my side by Side Whirlpool!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO BILL!!!
I appreciate your “real-time” tutorials. For most of us, it’s our first (and only) time, we’re scared to death, and we go slow. Watching you take your time, allows me to take my time. Eventually I get the job done and look like a hero to my family. You’ve got the touch of a great teacher. Thank you for making these videos.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE ICEMAKER NOT MAKING ICE.
Second time in the last two years I’ve found my answer and relied on your video to fix my appliances. Thankyou for your service(Corp) and your tutorial. Much appreciated. Total repair Bill $9.47
Thanks Bill. This is EXACTLY what I needed. I have a customer who banged the bottom of the control box when it would shut down and it would work for a day and then she'd have to do it all over again. I diagnosed it correctly but couldn't figure out how to get the control box apart to get to those two horizontal screws so I could get to the cold control. You gave me the missing piece! Great job and thank you for your service to our country!
Bill, good video. You take the mystery out of appliance repair. Thanks!
this guy is the greatest repairman on you tube thanks for your time keep the videos coming
I watched every minute of this, and that's saying a lot with my short attention span. very informative and very chill. no pun intended!
Bill, I's like to say 1,000 thank you's for your tutorial on the Whirlpool side-by-side no cooling situation!!! I know a thing or 2 about controls and appliances myself but your real-time tutorials are a HUGE time saver and I thank you for them. I used the link to try and buy the parts. Hopefully, they kicked some $$ your way (though I could not tell if it did or not). Thanks again! Elliott S.
Thank you Bill, I greatly appreciate your videos! They take the mystery out of DYI repairs - thank you!
Thank you, Bill, God bless you richly for what you are teaching to us the complete novices.
Great job! Nice simple explanation of types of problems and a well filmed demonstration of the taking apart of the control panel. I didn't realize the OTHER two screws holding the unit were hidden under the Facia. Thank you. :-)
Is a great step by step video with narrative that I can follow, absorb and set my laptop and watch as I do the steps. Tools to use and not overdoing anything is really good advice.
Thank you for showing everyone how to diagnose and repair their refrigerator. Your videos are some of the best I've seen. They're clear, concise and easy to understand. Very much appreciate you!!
Thanks for the comprehensive video, I taped the control before watching and it started up so I was pretty sure that was the problem. I was sitting just waiting for the part and thought I should check how to install it and your clip was a comforting assurance as to how to as they say get er done!
Thanks Bill! So glad you are taking the time to teach us all on how to make those repairs and save us some money. I don't think most people realize how simple these expensive machines are to fix. I've fixed my washer twice and this is the second fridge I've fixed with 2 separate issues. Thanks again for your Vids!! M in PS 🙂
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You saved me a lot of money on repairs. Got the part on eBay for $9. Had to adjust that little calibration screw though on it to make it less cold. As some have commented, these replacement thermostats seem to be calibrated to the maximum cold setting making your fridge ice up even on 1 or lower on the dial. About a 3/4 clockwise turn solved this problem for me.
Thank you, Bill! The thermostat I received was not precisely the same as original so I had to bend the wire prongs a little. You made the process understandable and your video showed the steps clearly. It took me forever but at least the refer food defrosted while I got it done. Haha! The refer is again cooling and I can see if temp is spot on in the morning. Thank you from a girl with tools.
Your an awesome teacher. Thanks for the knowledge on Refrigiration equipment. Keep the lessons going:)
A good presentation from USMC. Well done Bill.
Bill, thanks for the clearly described video on removal of the Cold Control device and the diagnostic part was very informative. I appreciate the time that you put into this.
Bill!! Thank you,. I had changed the thermostat a few years ago and didn’t remember how to do this. Easy with your instructions!!!
I am all the way in jamaica and your video let me solve this mistery on a customer fridge and now use that money to get some more tools brother you have a way of teaching and you make me wanna continue.
Thanks man, we need more like you in the earth. God bless.
Thanks Bill. Your video helped. I installed it today and all is working.
Thank you for this excellent visual and verbal description. I don’t think I will attempt to repair it myself but it helped me make the decision to have the thermostat repaired vs purchasing a new refrigerator!!
Bill trouble shooting process expatiation is simple to understand. Great video of the removal of part makes it easier to understand. Thank you, I now know what needs to be done if I decide to do it myself or if I call a technician. Thank you again.
Thank you, you explain things very well. I can’t afford a new refrigerator so I am so thankful to have a way to fix this one.
Great video, Bill. One of the 1st symptoms I had was the ice cubes in the bin started sticking together more than usual. Then taping the decice made it work like you mentioned. Until it finally failed. Very easy to change thanks to you.
Bill!!!thank you sooo much!!you just saved me tons of 💰!!!very easy and great video and directions!!!thanks again!!
Thanks Bill. Saved me from an expensive repair bill though my wife was looking forward to getting a new refrigerator.
Thank you for the video and info, I believe this to be what is wrong with my mothers 10 year old Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. Time to shop for the part! 👍
Thanks for the video. I followed your directions, did the troubleshooting (bottom of fridge was freezing and ice was melting, also when you tapped the control it would come on) ordered the part and fixed it!
Thanks, bill. Your instructional was very helpful. Here's a tip a pro ac/frig guy gave me for the hardest part of the job: Threading the copper tube thru the plastic sleeve - put dish soap on the tube and it'll slide right in with no deleterious effects on proper thermostatic operations.
Thank you Bill. Very informative. I am learning thanks to you!
Thanks Bill. This is simple enough and doesn't take much time.
Thank you so much bill . All of your videos are a big help .
Thank you for stating the problem and then stating the solution. cool
Okay BILL I followed the four screw removal did the new replacement followed your video and wa la magic!!! Thanks for the video, now onto Free Power
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this. It's very helpful. Me, like a dummy, didn't close the freezer door totally closed cuz ice bin wasn't fully pushed in. It stayed like that for about 10 hrs. So now the freezer has to be put on 5 (highest setting) so it can keep freezing. Hope this takes care of the problem.
Great Video. So informative. Not sure this is the problem in my 18 yr old Whirlpool Good Side by side. It is running for too often. On 10 mins then off 10 mins. Still reviewing on-line info to make sure this is truly my problem. Thanks again.
Great video Bill. I am in school training to be an appliance repair technician and find your videos very useful for continued learning as to how each model and component works and where it is located. Keep making your great videos!
Should mention that we were told in class that those capillary tubes on the Thermostat do not have a liquid in them when they are used in Refrigerators.
Noticed your sweat shirt Semper Fi and thank u for your service
Awesome job, Marine! You made the job go right & quick. Keep up the good work
I have an Amana Frig very simular to this frig you used. I'm hoping it will be the same process! Thanks for making it look so easy!
You are a God. Helped me tremendously. Thank you so much !!!
You helped me repair my whirlpool. Thank you!
your videos have helped me alot..very informative....i love how technically inclined you are...will love for you to do a video on how to check all components on a refrigerator..(voltage, ohms, resistance ) thanking you in advance
Very good video. You made it very simple to follow. Thank you.
Thank you so very much. My fridge is up and running again. Your my hero.
Thank You for this, what a great help it was when the stat went out on my Amana. Just done, seems to work.
ONE HINT: When putting back together, take the care and trouble to align the screws correctly before screwing them in, if you crossthread any then woe betides.
UURAW!! Semper Fi thank you so much I think "we will see" saved me a lot of money. Thank you, Rick former corporal USMC
Thank you very much for the video. I will follow your guidance and repair the frig. problem. Thank you again. God Bless you for sharing your knowledge.
Honest, well done video, with proper information and instructions. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to do this for greater good.
Thank You for the Thorough explanation!
Bill thanks a lot. I have been learning a lot from your videos
Just saw your video, I just learned a lot in ten minutes. Thank you and keep posting videos.
you are a good teacher. thanks for your times to make this video, 👍👍👍
Thanks much this really helped my situation what you went over was issue l was having you did a great job with explaining detailed repair procedures
Excellent and very informative video. Helped us fix our refrigerator when a lying "tech repair" guy wanted to change the entire control assembly instead of just the thermostat and charge us $300+.
Thank you for posting this. Keep up the great work!
You are doing a great job. You are very detailed in your videos. I have been helped, thankYou.
Very informative for DIY....really save your budget to repair your fridge. Thanks!
I really appreciate the video it really helped me out a lot I had to change the thermostat and got my frigerator going I appreciate it and keep up the good work man
Hi Bill, excellent video, right speed, not too slow, neither too fast, just at the right speed. The metal wire does not have "freon" or the modern day refrigerant, which is most likely R-134a, less harmful to the ozone layer like freon. The metal wire should contain an inert gas that expands and contracts with temperature controlling the "coldness" of the fridge.
Thank you very much! Very informative and detailed.
This was a perfect part 2 following the video on replacing the defrost timer. Can you please make another video that shows how to get to/and clean the condenser coils for this unit. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks 😊
That is my fridge nice video.
Just changed mine thank you!!
Thank you for the demonstration. I like it, & I may give a try!
Thank you for the professional video. It was very informative.
Thank for the detail informations on your video, which help me to fixed my Whirlpool refrigerator and save the price for the new one, thank again.
Awesome ... and thanks ... I now know how to figure this out ... I'm a fairly decent fix it guy but guidance never hurts ... oh ... and Semper Fi brother !
Bill is still out here saving lives RIP
Great video- exactly what I needed to know- Thanks Peyt
Thanks Bill! I think you just saved me a bunch of money. I owe you a beer 🍺
Very impressive tutorial we learned and save money for service. Keep on
Great Help Bill! Thanks You!!!
Thanx for that info, think I found real problem, all the symptoms sound right, I'll get back to ya see how it goes, either way good explanation and production.
Thanks for the video it’s easy to understand.
Good info. My new one took the freezer down to -30F quite quickly. I have set the freezer at 50% and hoping things settle down. Next time I will look for a unit with independent control of the compartments. This scheme with the one t-stat and then a vent doesn't feel like engineering to me.
Thanks man! Fixed mine by replacing this bad boy! Money well spent! $12 from Amazon! 😊
great job.......very easy to understand......thank you!
Very thoroughly explained!
Very good tutorial clear instructions
Great video, I'm removing that control now!
Thank you very much for the help! God bless.
Excellent video. Thanks so much.
Very helpful - thanks. A small comment: I think the long tube is an insulated thermocouple wire.
