I have tried doing my Zee brakes from the caliper up and from the lever down they always had a spongy feeling to them.... nothing I did would give my Shimano Zee brake levers that solid feel I always had with my old XT or Avid brakes..... .... so, OK.. I tried your method and "hey presto" I now have solid feeling levers on my Zee's for the first time since I bought and fitted them to my downhill bike... cheers from me bud... my sanity is restored :-)

Depending on how the brake hose is routed, it might be beneficial to follow this method up with a reverse bleed (push fluid upwards using a syringe on the caliper side). Never needed to do this on a car/motorbike, though. But I've heard depending on a specific model, this method can do a better job. But either way I'd start with the method described in this video.

Thank you so much for this guide. I had my bike loaded ready for a bike packing trip then noticed my rear brake was spongy, I didn’t want to strip the gear off my bike and take the rear wheel off etc. This way it took me about 5-10 minutes and my brakes are firm and so much better than before. So much easier than so many over complicated guides.

This videos put a lot of my questions about bleeding bike brakes to rest. I bleed the brakes on all my vehicles and was very confused to why bikes required so many more steps then my truck. Turns out, it doesn't need to be so complicated thanks to this video. Nice job!

I've never bled disc brakes before, so watching this simple video is a Godsend. No waffling on, just plain and easy to understand instructions. Unlike other videos which waffle on and on, confusing a person to the point that they then feel uncomfortable attempting to bleed their own brakes. Great Video...🙂👍🏻

I just did this an hour ago in my garage, so simple and it seemed to work. I'm not sure why there's so many much more complicated methods being used. As you did I didn't even remove my wheels or brake pads, I was careful and didn't get mineral oil on anything. The only issue I had was my bleed tubing was a bit short so I had to keep it in the bottle and watch it. One thing I did notice in some videos is for a last step they move the brake lever 30 degrees each direction and pump it to I guess remove yet more air bubbles, might do that next time, it can't hurt. I guess time will tell how well this worked but the initial impressions are great. Thanks for sharing this video.

I always bleed with the wheel in, makes the pad contact point perfect every time, bleed blocks set the pistons way to far apart leaving you with nothing in reserve for pad wear.

A quick tip for helping get bubbles out is to use a strong electric toothbrush (hard plastic contact not the bristles) (Probably best to avoid the knicker drawer version for this 🤣).
The high frequency vibrations knock the bubbles out of place and they rise up. Saves some back n forth with the oil.
Electric tire pumps you get for cars also vibrate enough to help if your short of a toothbrush.

Makes sense this way, gets rid of the crud for the main flush. To get the main flush done(not so much a bleed) can't you slowly push from a syringe on these shimanos from the top? Add more oil and bleed the caliper the way you show afterwards to speed up the process? Also a lever bleed before and after, tapping all the hoses? I have never bled any kind of brake before, however the backwards shimano way doesn't make any sense for anything other than a quick bleed to me, as it pumps the dirty caliper fluid up??

This was the method used before "bleed screws" when you filled the reservoir directly. I did like the idea of the bottle hanger since the plastic bag attached to the drain hose always seemed to come loose. I've got to bleed my SLX brakes and given the price of the official Shimano syringes for a bottom-up bleed, I am going back to this method.
