    As an Orient fan, I loved this unapologetic Orient geek-fest. Too much fun. I love the new Mako 3, the grey dial looks great, and I loved it on the brown leather and grey fabric straps you had it on. This one will be joining the Mako II and Ray II Raven in my collection as soon as I see one at a good price. Thanks for this Orient-oriented episode.

    I personally appreciate the history lesson. Especially since I’m fairly new to watches. It looks like some sellers are calling it the Kamasu Mako 3. Which makes sense I suppose. When prices come down a bit, I am for sure getting the white dial. Thanks for the great review! Oh and I like the numerals.

    I must say that this channel is by far the one, if not the best around. From the content to the context, to the way of presentation. Solid, staight to the point, there is no single minute I would call boring. Always informative, objective and interesting - love the perfect narration. Not to mention the look - edit, sound etc. All the best, keep up the fantastic work !!!

    Great review as usual. I own both a blue Mako USA II and a black Kamasu and love them both. Modded both with LIW bezels and ceramic inserts. Two points: Firstly, the Mako USA was basically a custom watch ordered by the US distributor “Orient Watch USA” and thus was originally only available through the Orient USA store (and sold only to the USA and Canada). Later, they allowed Marc from Long Island Watch to sell the Mako USA II at the end of their production. Secondly the Kamasu was named by Orient Watch USA through a voting poll sent out to customers. So it was actually fans that voted on the final name.

    I'm feeling old watching this Shane as I'm wearing my old orange bezel 44.5mm Mako XL, which I think I bought sometime around 2011 with its shake to wake non hacking 46943 movement. I think it came out sometime between the first and second Mako releases. Still one of my favourite watches, excellent timekeeping, accidentally magnetized it a few years so took the opportunity to have it serviced and it's running at +1 spd! You do need a wrist on the larger side with its 51mm lug to lug but I think 7.25" and above is fine. I do like this new one whatever people want to call it and excellent review as always!

    Why they insist in doing this so big ? Make it 39/40 mm and 20 lug to lug. Seiko has just done It with his Seiko 5 SKX style. It is the reason why I have not bougth a Kamatsu.

    • @TheGrenadier97
      @TheGrenadier97 Год назад +1

      I like the size in my skinny 6,25" wrist, although it could use 20 lug width. I believe that Orient considers a smaller Kamasu in the future, hopefully with better prices than the smaller 5KX.

    • @larrydalton2205
      @larrydalton2205 Год назад

      Somehow on this watch and the Ray and Mako USA series the size seems smaller on my wrist. I really don't notice the difference between it and my 40mm divers. In wearing my Christopher Ward Trident Proo 300 40mm today and looking at my wrist it seems no bigger than my Mako USA 2 white dial. Even though it is.

  • @Intelligence3
    @Intelligence3 5 месяцев назад

    I recently chose the green Baby Triton. Horizontal Day-Date can look dated, or it can look vintage-inspired. To me it always looks dated on the Orient dive watches, or on any contemporary dive watch, tbh. But the colorways of these are outstanding and unique and it was a close thing for me and for the price it sure seems like owning both is a an option. I like that these colorways are really different, which gives a reason to consider these over the Kamasu. I also think the Arabic Indices provide the same inherent value.

  • @brianmccord7387
    @brianmccord7387 Год назад +6

    I have always felt that the 22 mm bracelet is out of proportion to the usual Orient diver cases. This was particularly egregious on the Mako USA.

    • @magnang
      @magnang Год назад +2

      Yep. I felt the same about my ray 2.
      Easy enough fix.. buy a 22mm and 20mm oyster online.. make sure they are the same model, same brand.
      Use the 22mm endlink with the 20mm bracelet.
      20mm band makes a huge upgrade to how the watch looks and feels. It's worth doing.

    • @danpodina438
      @danpodina438 Год назад

      I have to disagree on this. Dive watches should have a bold wrist presence and I think the 22mm bracelet helps.

      @brianmccord7387 Год назад

      @@danpodina438 that’s a fair point but if you had seen the 40 mm Mako USA, you would see that the case was actually swallowed by the bracelet and I think it reduced its wrist presence.

    Thanks shane, it's nice to see an entry level Orient diver again. I never had the regular Mako 2 but the Ray 2 in blue was my first entry level modern diver before buying an SKX and going deep down this rabbit hole of dive watches. The regular Mako with arabics has always seemed to have weaker lume than the Ray line and the USA lines but even though I never bought a Mako, I always liked the look. I still have that Ray and did a minor mod on it to get a tapered bracelet and sapphire. Still have the white and black versions of the USA 2. So yes the drawbacks are continuing with the small crown and untapered bracelet. I don't even really mind pressed clasps as they often feel slimmer than milled. Orient will probably always stay in my collection.

  • @Mr_Memer.876

    I actually found the crown on the Mako 3 to be far superior to the one on the Kamasu. The teeth are more aggressive giving much better grip. I kept hold of my strapcode Kamasu bracelet when I sold it, so i swapped out the OEM bracelet as soon as it arrived

    Sorry to double post but I do remember Marc from Long Island Watch telling Tristano that Orient Watch is actually in a weird place in the Seiko Epson corporate umbrella where they are actually overseen by the printer division and they don’t get the same marketing and research and design budget as their big brother. I think that shows in their weird approach to proprietary websites and model names. It seems like someone needs to step in and re-organize things for them, so that they can capitalize on being the value for money diver and dress watch king.

Fab review and I think you're right about this new Mako (or whatever it's going to be called) - it's simply not interesting enough in all regards, particulary a step down in design-language compared to the sharp and consistent barracuda look of the red Kamasu. Sadly the bezel spring (I guess?) of my own Kamasu broke after 1 year, it's now a 60 click turn with a wobbly feel, but still love the look of it. There is also a new 40mm diver coming from Orient. Not sure of the name yet. I think Orient Japan is just calling it the 40mm Mako.

    I bought the gray one and I am kinda unhappy with it. For my use it is way to reflective, as you mentioned in your video. The readability is Soo bad. Maybe because of my poor eyesight. I keep finding myself dodging this watch all the time and wearing other ones :-/ that's sad, as I really like the design and the size

    I still seethe a bit for missing out on the white Mako II USA. I ordered from the Orient US website and got my order cancelled just after the $199 sale because I got flagged for shipping it to a forwarding service. Shame, it's still one of the nicest B&W divers out there. Even the Mako I USA is cool in a dorky way with that push button day changer.
    As for the Mako III, it's a nice watch but I think it would be cooler if they just made it a no-date. Unlike the Kamasu and the Ray III, the day/date doesn't really balance out with the 9 numeral. If the Mako III was a no-date, it would actually make a nice compliment watch for Kamasu/Ray owners.
    Great review and history overview!

    Im really hesitant on buying after market bracelets. More times then not they arent long enough and i dont think i should pay more for extra links. I like the newedt mako and may look into either the white or silver dial.

    I will admit to being a Seiko fanboy, and have the SKX007, 009, and the Samurai. I have yet to pull the trigger on an Orient, and I'm not sure why. If I had to pinpoint a reason, perhaps odd case sizes and lug widths, particularly on the Bambinos. That said, this grey dial looks spectacular and might be the one that hooks me.

      The bambino lug width still confuses me. No idea why they went that way.

    It is really puzzling why Orient does not "move upscale" and adopt the features of the Mako USA II in all of their watches. Dont get me wrong, I am a huge Orient fan. The Mako II was my first mechanical watch and I have been hooked on mechanical watches ever since. I own a Mako II, a Ray II, two Kamasus and two Mako USA II models. As much as I like the others, the Mako USA models are in another class. The Mako USA models can hold their own with watches costing twice as much (or more). Why make anything else?? Or why not sell dive watches at several price tiers? These new models don't really offer me anything that I dont already love about the Orients that I own. Like you, I think that the red Kamasu on a Strapcode bracelet is pretty hard to top and is my "go to" watch.. I agree, the white Mako III is about the only one that I would consider.

    My problem with automatics always was weak rotors, in order to store energy.
    Problem resolved with "SEA GULL" calibers fitted in the chinese brand PARNIS.
    A 'power reserve' model of PARNIS, ¡¡ never stops !!, even with very little movement.

      @@RelativeTime the PARNIS 'Lepine', (with small seconds at 9), Power Reserve between 4 and 6, and date, at 3.
      Also the model without date, railway minute display, power reserve at 12 and small seconds at 6.
      Both fitted with "SEA GULL" calibers.

    Let’s face it orient are killing the entry level dive watch game right now.. so many colour choices.. perfect sizes.. ( I think citizen $hit the bed by upgrading the ny0040 to a 44mm case).. that sapphire grey mako is 👌

    Orient puts second hand, bezel from Ray in Mako & it fits perfect!!!**) Mako&Ray - Classics now. Faaar classier than Kamasu, i guess. And faaar classier than tons of PRC mikrobranddivers. Colors are pretty attractive for me. Black, blue, orange exists looong time in previous TRUE Mako and Ray (1&2). Price...Mako 2 (without Mighty Sapphire and with short second hand))) was about 150. Now ...300!!! SRP, of course, but ...:)

    I love my Seiko turtle but I'd take the Orient dive watch instead of a seiko "Dive watch" that's created to mislead the customer.

    I like to differentiate between the Mako, Ray and Kamasu families by their handsets, since they all have the same case. Unfortunately Orient doesn't help in solving the mess fans and sellers made with these names, which is bad in my opinion for the future reputation of these fantastic divers.
    Of the four Mako III releases (which includes this dressy gray-silver) i'm considering the blue, as it has a lighter and more "littoral" looks to it i think.

    Just learn the international model code for current Orient models and then trace the lineage with the *base* model numbers, it's not that hard. And yes, AA08 is not Kamasu, like, at all. Kamasu and Kanno belong to AA00 base model.
    Speaking of this one (RA-AA0819N?), the sunburst effect on the dial is cool but I think it's a bit less functional than RA-AA0001B because the minute hand doesn't fully reach the markers and the bezel isn't fully marked either. I wouldn't mind the bracelet at all as I usually swap them to NATO or steel mesh straps on day one, unless we're talking titanium. By the way, with this hand length and color scheme, the RA-AA0819N just begs to be made out of titanium *and* a few mm smaller in diameter (the F6922 will fit in there anyway) so that the minute hand would reach the markers and the day/date window would be closer to the edge. I'd buy such a Mako immediately if they made one.

    The Kamasu is indeed the best main stream brand entry diver, but it's a shame Orient are so reluctant to make smaller watches. However, compare it to a microbrand and look at the difference. I look at my Phoibos Voyager 3, which is about the same price, but better in about every way
