As a Puerto Rican, I'm proud.
Proud'a Rican? 😀😀
Mama would be so very proud of you primo! She didn’t teach us the language because her children were looked at & spoken down to as “immigrants” and were severely demeaned when they were young! She didn’t want any of us to feel that hurt. At least that’s what she told me when I inquired about it! I miss her every day! Thanks for sharing her love of cooking! You did her rice & beans perfectly!!! That’s exactly how I remember it!!! XOXOX
Thank you, prima! Yeah, I was told the same thing too about why we weren't taught the language as kids. I totally understand and appreciate their reasoning, but part of me still wishes that I was fluent in the language so I could fit in more with our people. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! It's so cool for the people who follow my channel to learn just a little bit about our beloved Mama, who is missed daily within our family. Love you! 🇵🇷
As a puertorrican prepper, I approve this message👌💪🇵🇷
Boricua!! 🇵🇷
Awesome!!! 🇵🇷
🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Wait.. Does that mean that you are a "Prepper Rican" ? 🤔🤔
@@sylla2 LOL!! Love it!
My wife is full Puerto Rican; and I can attest this video is spot-on. This is a common dish ate at my house. :)
Awesome!! Thanks EP!!
Thank you for sharing a piece of your family tradition!!
Que chevere. I would have
never imagine you'd be half Puertorriqueño. Gracias
One of my ex girlfriends mother was Puerto Rican and the food she cooked was so good I should have dated the mother instead of the daughter
LOL!!
Tnx for the laugh !
Its not too late.
😂😂😂
Yo 😭😬
This made me tear up. I never got the chance to spend a lot of time with my own grandparents (let alone learn any family recipes!) so I think it's amazing you learned so much from your Mama before she passed. Thank you for sharing, this looks so good!! 😭💜
Thank you to Mama for cooking for your family, and hopefully, being not-too-mad that the recipe is being shared! I rely a lot on canned ingredients, so this recipe might turn out to be another lifesaver for me. Thank you for helping a disabled person feed themselves. 🙏
Wow! It's cool to know you're half Puerto Rican. It's good to know there's Puerto Preppers out there 😆
Thank you Mama Rosa! I am part puerto rican and my grandmother (and her sisters) never shared her complete recipe for anything. I bet this recipe would be amazing poured over a fried plantain. Nothing beats a tomato-based sauce.
¡MAYAGÜEZ! Yes. Boricua (beginner) prepper here! Thank you for sharing this deliciousness, Urban Prepper.
Very cool! The Boricua Prepper would be a cool alias!
I really like how you spoke about your grandmother and some cultures they believe that people reemerge in our memories or when we tell stories about them and they can enjoy the memories and the stories as well so keep it up I'm sure she's proud
Thanks for the appreciation for our culture! Even if you don't speak the language its something that's in your blood. You show the love through the food and love towards your grandma. Thank you so much!!!
I’ve made this twice following your steps and it was amazing. Thank you :)
I didn’t know you were half perfect, I mean Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 ❤️ 💙 !
Thank you for sharing! Your channel is the best, in part due to the variety. Love the respect for your mama! Stay safe.
Thank you so much! I really like that I feel like I have the creative freedom to cover a wide range of topics on my channel. I appreciate your support.
Thanks for sharing your grandmas recipe! I’m also Puerto Rican and like to make my own sofrito. Pink beans and gandules are my favorite beans. I became a prepper about 3 years ago from watching your videos. Great music to end your video. Love your channel!🇵🇷
My homegirl made this and her grandmother's empanada recipe yesterday for dinner. When I tell you my taste buds were in absolute heaven. I want to take a shot at trying to make it myself lol. That's what brought me here. Thank you for sharing.
Boricua! Glad to see you cooking one of our staple food items. 🇵🇷🇺🇸
Thanks Marcos! This one is one of my favorites.
As a Certified Chef and Puerto Rican 🇵🇷
My respect to you Prepper, I also have my signature recipes from my MOTHER
And grandma(RIP) this absolutely on POINT, I go more FROM scratch. Then can pantry but you did a great job on this PARTICULAR recipe ❤🙏🏾🔥🇵🇷 🇺🇸
My boyfriend whom I’ve been with for a few years is Puerto Rican and his mom makes delicious food. We recently moved away from home and I’m trying my best to make food like his mom does💕to make him feel at home. This was very helpful, thank you for sharing!
Nice job and it's fun to see family tradition carried on. I had a Lebanese aunt that taught me many dishes as a kid and I think of her each time I make one.
I knew there was something about you that was familiar. I'm also half Puerto Rican and saw that in you from the beginning. I'm a pepper in Sacramento CA and have been subscribed to your channel for some time. Thank you for all your suggestions during this pandemic
Very cool! Yes, I advertise myself as the tallest half breed Puerto Rican currently in the state of Washington.
Very organized and well put video. I'm Puertorican myself and we make habichuelas guisadas for almost everything. Thank you for the recipe my friend! God bless you!
Thank you for this. Great hearing about your Mama. They are the best.
Trying the beans out today they look delicious. I have been looking for a good recipe tired of watered down beans was looking for the thick Puerto Rican beans 🙌🙌🙌 thank you! Making your grandma proud!!!! 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Puertorican in the House!!!
Thanks for this, very inspirational and with the benefit of having your dear mama's touch on it too.
So glad you shared with us. I'm a Nueyorican (Puerto Rican born in NYC) lol. I've enjoyed your videos. I'm a newbie prepper.
This man said it exactly how one should cook it for those who are learning these PR recipes. Good job my man!!
Puerto rican food is soo underrated not sure why it's not more popular in America most people seem to look down on you if you eat this type of food all the health nuts always have a problem with everything so most of these ingredients they would probably think are terrible but I have tried to make some Puerto rican dishes recently from youtube and can honestly say I loved everything I tried the food had so much flavor and it felt so satisfying to eat actually I think it was one of the best meals I had in years
Read your nutritional labels on beans. Most beans from bags are excellent for everyone.
Thank you for sharing this family recipe and thank you Mama Rosa!
You are very welcome, Brad!
My favorite prepper is half puerto rican!
Hola from Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷
I thought I was the only Boricua from Mayaguez in the Puget Sound area. Nice to see another brother around.
I'm originally from Honduras but I free up in Connecticut surrounded by delicious Boricua food like this one. 😊
Hey, you’re giving away all our secrets! 😂
Sorry Roddy. :)
Please give it away! Us white folks need to know what REAL beans and rice tastes like! Lol!
Just made this with chorizo. Thank you Sir and Mama Rosa this is on point and now my go to beans dish.
Thanks for creating this video! Over in the UK we don't have a few of those ingredients in our supermarkets but it's fascinating to hear about new cuisines. Also rice & beans are a staple "end of the month" meal for a lot of people managing on a budget and it's interesting to hear about ways to make them tasty. Hope you're keeping well.
Puerto Rican here, I have made this dish all my life and you can make it from fresh ingredients, fresh minced garlic, dried beans if you dont have canned, fresh potatoes, pork any pork will do, the fattier the better, tomato sauce or paste, annatto seed oil, make your own by steeping in warmed oil for an hour until nice and red or you can use powder if you can find it or leave it out, and season it with salt, black pepper, turmeric, oregano, garlic power if you dont have fresh, and onion powder these are the same ingredients in Adobo minus the anti-caking chemicals and MSG which may cause cancer, cook same way in video and serve over rice with a nice thin fried pork chop, enjoy.
I made this tonight and it was so good! Thanks for sharing!!! 😮❤
Sounds good 👍
In case you haven’t figured out how to make sofrito. Here’s the recipe.
Use your judgment on how much you want to make by adding or lessening your ingredients.
I buy cilantro 🌿 garlic 🧄, green peppers, 🫑 onions 🧅 sweet chili peppers (aji dulce),
recao 🍃.
Mix altogether in a blender for about 1 to 2 mins. Done…put your sofrito in glass jars to keep it fresh and refrigerate.
Puerto Rico!! 🇵🇷
Wepa!
Yum...Thanks for sharing Mama's recipe!
You are so welcome!
This is almost exactly how I make my pink beans and rice minus the meat. I’m going to add meat next time. I also use the jarred society from Goya. I learned the recipe from my neighbor when my husband was in the army. One of the best parts of military life is having friends and neighbors of all cultures and recipe exchange and pot lucks. When my husband retired from the army, we spent at least 2 years sad and depressed because we missed meeting new people.
Side note. I have made this with small red beans before and it was delicious. I’ve used a mix of pink beans and small red beans and black beans and it was delicious. Sometimes you just gotta use what you got! I must say my absolute favorite is using the original pink bean though. There have been times I didn’t have pink beans or didn’t want beans so I used all the ingredients to flavor my rice then threw it all in the rice cooker, it was Pretty delicious. I usually always have people ask me for the recipe. Either way I make it!
Seems delicious, thank you for sharing such a great recipe & great family history of yours.
Really excited for this. I purchased the ingredients and making this tonight. Thank you for the detail information :).
I was looking for this recipe and bumped onto your channel so I subscribed to your channel. I too went to my pantry and found all the ingredients and wow I tried it. It's delicious. Thank you for sharing.
I’m middle eastern and Mexican and my boyfriend is Puerto Rican so I had no choice but to learn how to cook his way 🤍thanks for the help !
thats so cool, most people dont realize im half puerto Rican cause my dad was italian but my mom was puert Rican and her mom and dad were from myaguez, never hear too many pr from there that ive met,so Hi! me and all my siblings love pr food our grandma was a great cook but didnt get to teach us,my mom too busy cooking italian she wanted to learn, lol. I cook great italian and trying to learn authentic pr food like my grandmas
For those thinking of trying the recipe, DO IT!!! i can't cook to save my life and it turned out DELICIOUS!!!
I'm from PR myself! So good to hear we have that in common. Although my husband had told me that I'm losing the traditions a little. I don't use sazón, I don't necessarily have to use Goya, I buy cheaper brands and I don't make sofrito! I cut onions and peppers and mashed the garlic right before using it. The food tastes just as good. What I don't like about sazón o adobo is the MSG. I don't use medium grain rice, I like jasmine. I don't use empty butter containers to store leftovers and my oven is not full of pots and pans. 😁 I call myself Southerican now. 😁 I'm a traitor! No. 😁 Oh and no olives or capers!
Thanks for sharing! One big criticism of stacking staples like rice and beans is "Can you eat the same bland food!?" It doesn't have to be bland though!
True! I've been eating Puerto Rican rice and beans for decades. Long term food storage doesn't need to be bland.
Spices are the key to keep things tasty and interesting.
Also, you definitely need to do a video on making your own sofrito like you showed. It's hard to find Culantro up here.
As a European i subscribe to this request, pretty sure i can't find any of the more 'special' ingredients over here somewhat easily ...
I cant find Culantro either unless I go to the hispanic areas which, unfortunately, are not close to me.
@@aryannasantiago247 I make my own Sofrito and when I can't find Culantro ( Recao) I have substituted it by using Cilantro.
@@dutchcourage7312 I make my own Sofrito and when I can't find Culantro ( Recao) I have substituted it by using Cilantro.
Definitely going to try this once I get all the ingredients. Thamk you for sharing! I've been making beans for the past 2 months and I'm always looking for different recipes.
Man this is going to knock you socks off...!!!! just remember to put on some Salsa music while cooking and follow the video recipe.
You just activated all your goya preppers. Dios mio. Love your channel and this one goes to the top 3.
I made it exactly as you described and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you.
That is SO cool, Richard! Thank you for letting me know!
Richard, what’s the amount of water and corn oil you added when you did?
@@jakemathurin5638 Sorry but I don't remember the specific amounts. I just followed Cliff's instructions.
Fello Puerto Rican who also does not speak Spanish!!! So comforting finding another Puerto Rican who doesn’t speak the language. 💖💕💖💜
LOL!! I wish that I did, but my father's side of the family didn't want to teach us the language.
Love my island food. Muy bien! Buen Provecho!
Me too! Thanks, Marcel!
Now that is what I am talking about! Puerto Rican Beans and rice are soooooo good! This white boy LOVES them! Thank you RUclips!
I agree. They are AWESOME!
@@TheUrbanPrepper Not expensive, and also filling and pretty nutritious honestly! A GREAT meal. Now I might make some, need some sazon, only have the Cilantro Sofrito not the tomato in the house, but it is good too! Honestly it is the BEST tasting way to have beans and rice!
I’ve been watching your videos for a while....I had now idea of your boricua blood. I’m a little prepper mysel and puertorican. I try to teach my kids to be aware of their surroundings and to “dont drop your guard”. Thanks for sharing; i also liked your tools video. 🇺🇸🇵🇷
Thank you this reminded me of my mom 🥲❤️🙏
Long live 🇵🇷 !!! ,
Wepa!!! I had no clue you were Boricua!! Bronx Boricua Prepper here!! Pa'lante hermano!!
Dude! You made me hungry! Also, arroz con gondules y chuletas ? One of my favorite meals
Hey Boriquen!!!! I love pink beans. Bring on the gandules as well.
I can totally make a video featuring Arroz con Gandules!
@@TheUrbanPrepper Go for it brother. 😃😃😃
Thanks for sharing this dish from your beloved Mama Rosa!
You are so welcome
Oh Cliff. In your spare time, start a restaurant. "Mama Rosa's". You made & served @ your Mama's 70th birthday party. Thanks for sharing family recipe & family ethnicity. Ida
@@idea3928 Great idea, Ida! :)
Thank you for this recipe .The Pink beans turned out great
My mother in law taught me how to make this 😊 I use kielbasa for the meat. And sometimes we use butternut or that one squash that looks like a green pumpkin and OMG sooooooo good!!🤤 (I usually don’t add the olives when I do this but other people do & it’s still delicious. BUT none of my in laws have ever used capers! I’m so curious to try that next time!!
Thank you so much for this! I am looking forward to cooking this tonight!
Thanks for sharing and looking to forward to more videos like this
Cool. I'd be happy to share more than I can still make prepping related.
Thanks for the recipe!
Translating and finding the ingredients here in Europe will be great fun! So much to learn about the world!
I'm looking forward to cooking this!
Cool! Keep me posted if you're able to find everything, Alexander!

Fellow Puerto Rican here! This looks amazing brother !

literally cant wait to try this
This came out perfectly!!! TY ❤️
This looks delicious! Thank you Mama Rosa
She would love it if you tried her recipe, Cornelius! :)
That looks soooooooo goooooooood! What a wonderful family recipe.
Thank you, Rogue! Next time you and the family happen to be in Washington, I'll be sure to make it for you guys!
Thank you for sharing your video!😊
Thanks, that was wonderful.
Similar to my mom’s. She would add some small pieces of pumpkin to thicken it. My grandma used salchichon or pork feet (patitas) 😋
Thank you for this excellent video.
Thank you. I cooked beans for the first time yesterday...didn't have any olives but it tasted delicious
I looked up beans for white rice recipe to make dinner tonight ( I’m a huge fan of your channel ) I can’t believe you showed up as the first one lol that’s crazy
Yes!! I love this so much.
Thank you so much, Lizette!
This is an awesome recipe!! I usually buy the beans in sauce. I like this recipe.
Spot-on!
Cool vid thx to you and your mother for the recipe
HOY ISE ABICHUELAS Y SABEN COMO FRIJOLES DE LA OYA PERO MAS DIFERENTE SABEN BIEN BUENAS... NO SABIAN QUE ERAN DE PUERTO RICO ... PERO ME ENCANTARON YO LES PUSE CEBOLLA Y AJO MIENTRAS SE COCINABAN Y QUEDARON DELICIOSAS PERO NO SE SI LAS ISE AL ESTILO DE PUERTO RICO ORIGINAL... NUNCA TRATE DE IMITAR SU ESTILO NI NADA ASI QUE ALOMEJOR EN EL FUTURO TRATARE UNA RECETA DE PUERTO RICO ,ya que antes a mi me encantaba el reggeton ! Y sus canciones Caribenas! 😍🙂
Great video! Also, we make this same recipe but with garbanzo instead of pink beans. Garbanzo can be found in any store. We use pumpkin instead of potatoes but I agree that potatoes would be way easier to find. We don't eat meat (don't ask me where I found a Puerto Rican who doesn't eat meat), so it's just rice and the seasoned beans.
Thank you !! Never had pink beans!!
Excellent recipe and ideas.
Love this, keep up the great content.
Thanks! It really worked
thanks for the recipe looks delicious
Wow you made it so easy thank you!
Tnx for sharing, i'm not one for beans most of the time, but this sure made me remind myself of Pavlov ;) ... also do think that 'pantry cooking' is a topic that's covered to little on prepper channels (even though it pops up every once in a while), and having these types of recipes that can be made from the actual food storage are pretty welcome in my views; as having more ways to prepare 'rice and beans' seems like something every prepper will want to know...
Great traditional dish. It can be accompanied with... a lot of things and that is the way is done.
Yep. We have it with so many different dishes.
Great recipe, looks very tasteful
I loved this video! Would you be able to make more content on prepping recipes?
Yummy! My house smells wonderful!
