  • Accelerated Nursing Programs are a great solution if you already have a Bachelors Degree in something other than nursing, but wish to become a registered nurse. I went through an accelerated BSN program years ago when I changed my major late in college and decided to pursue nursing. In this video I go over what an Accelerated BSN program is, what the prerequisites are, how to succeed in one, and what you can expect once in the program. I’ll share my work experience, and how to have balance between life and school while in nursing school.
If you are new here, Hello! I’m Liz, a Family Nurse practitioner, former pediatric nurse, and new(ish) mom. I’m about to start my new career, and plan to share it with all of you!

I got into a BSN Pathways program with a 2.6 on a 3.0 requirement. It’s all about how you present yourself in your personal statement, explain your academic gremlins, ENTRANCE EXAM SCORES and have B’s in your Bio and Chem classes. I got B’s in all of those and absolutely KILLED my teas and scored in the top 95 percentile. They’ll overlook some negatives if they feel you have Potential and really care about nursing as your career choice.

I'm seriously SO glad I found your channel, especially this video! I had been struggling deciding what I wanted to do as a career. It was pharmacy first, and then I decided to major in biology first before going to pharmacy school, and then once this past spring semester came around, I realized I didn't see myself being happy with pharmacy...especially going to school another 3-4 years studying something I probably won't like in the end. I work in a pharmacy now and although I don't mind working there, I wanted a more fulfilling and rewarding job. I had never thought about being a nurse because I immediately jumped to the conclusion that I wouldn't be good at it or diligent enough. I started to think about nursing more when I was in the hospital for a few days... the nurses and home care nurses were so great to me and I loved talking to them about their experiences they've had! I was talking to one of my friends who just graduated nursing school and she said her school has a 2nd degree BSN program that's only 15 months! I already applied so once I get in, I'll be starting next fall and I couldn't be more excited :) I feel so much more motivated knowing that I'll be studying and learning something I can use to truly help people!

Ah thank you for this video, Liz! I totally agreed when you said accelerated nursing programs are kind of a mystery because I feel like a lot of people don't talk about this type of nursing school (especially on RUclips!) I am definitely going to keep going back to this video while I am applying to my accelerated program next fall! The suggestions you gave for writing your personal statement were genius because I never thought to include the nursing school's values in the personal statement especially because my #1 choice will be a Christian nursing school so incorporating those values are extremely important! love your honesty yet encouraging attitude! Thank you so much for this video! :) P.S. I hate discussion boards too! LOL

Hi Liz! Love this video! Just found your channel and this was SUPER relatable! Im currently in my first summer (ending in a few weeks) of an accelerated program and it is the HARDEST thing Ive ever done in my life! When you tack on working (im also a waitress) it gets even harder! This was probably the best video I've seen on accelerated programs! I'm just now starting to find somewhat of a balance between studying, work, social life, and self care. I'm sure you know juggling all of this is rough! I'm in my second clinical rotation and although I'm learning a lot and I havnt necessarily done anything wrong, I feel so inadequate compared to everyone in my cohort with critical thinking and sometimes the skills (everyone is extremely smart). How did you become confident in yourself as a nurse? I havn't gotten to that point yet at all! Everyone says it gets better with time, but were learning so many things at once it feels like its impossible to know everything sometimes! ugh!
anyways, great videos! keep up the good work!

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  5 лет назад +1

great job on finishing up the first semester! I think the first semesters can be some of the hardest because its such a shock! I hope you are super proud of yourself for completing it, because like you said ABSN programs are NO JOKE. I know you are probably tired of hearing this, but honestly confidence will come with time. It took me at least 6 months AT MY FIRST JOB to feel even a little bit like "ok I can do this". My biggest tip for you would be to take a small notebook with you. And write down what you dont know. Then go home. look it up. and write it down in an alphabetized notebook so you can reference it later if you run into the question again. No point in looking something up twice! Plus writing things down helps you memorize them :) Best of luck! Hope you get a week or two of a break before starting again.

Thank you so much for this video. I am just starting. I am actually gathering transcripts and other paper work for the adviser to see what prerequisites I haven't completed. I have often second guessed my decision to do this based on my age. I want to work for 10-12 years and then volunteer as well! I hope you are doing well in your program. God bless!

Hi Liz!! I just came across your channel a few days ago and I’m obsessed lol!
I changed my major from accounting to nursing after my first year of college (during an accounting internship) and I’ve been taking nursing pre-reqs non stop since last fall! Everyone said I was crazy for trying to take 2 years of pre-reqs in 2 semesters, but somehow I did it and I’m getting ready to take the HESI in 2 weeks!!
I’m applying for an accelerated BSN program and I’m super anxious and stressed lol
This video was super informative and really just calmed my anxious heart because it made me realize I’m almost there!!!

Hi Liz! I am CURRENTLY in an Accelerated BSN program at UCONN, and it is an 11-month program. We just finished our second semester, and boy do I wish I had watched a video just like yours before I started this program! I was reassured that I could get into the program because of the necessity of a previous bachelor's degree in any field, as long as your GPA was 3.0 or higher. My previous Bachelor's was in Fine Arts, and while that doesn't seem like it correlates, I have been a CNA for many years and that experience has paid off so much. It is very intense, and I agree with you that even 18 months would seem like too little time to process all of the information needed to know to be a competent nurse! I had to quit working altogether this year in order to pursue my dream of becoming a Pediatric Nurse, and I can't believe I'm already 2/3 of the way through the program! I love your videos and my overall goal is to become a Pediatric NP, so I really have been enjoying watching your NP videos! Thank you for posting these videos about nursing, as I am sure it is so helpful for those who are considering going into the nursing field!

There are a fair amount of people working and going completing this program. If you have to do it, you have to do it. No one can make that call for you but yourself, and don't feel like you're being pressured into quitting because of this program. I would like to say though, that you should definitely have a good sense of how much you can handle working and studying, attending class (a 9-hour class day, 2 9-hour clinical days) and various labs throughout this program that offer very little leeway in terms of adaptability. There are make-ups, but they tend to be on the weekend and in Storrs. This is such a short program so you have to be focused, but if you know what you can handle, you can keep working without any problems.

Absolutely love your videos and have been listening to them while I’m at work! I’m about to start my nursing prereqs next semester with the intent to apply to ABSN programs and I’m so excited! I have a degree in architecture (currently working in healthcare architecture, designing hospitals, etc.). Been working in this field for the past 3 years and really don’t feel like sitting at a desk 9-5 is what I was meant to do my entire life. I’ve always had an interest in medicine and used to love hearing about my mother’s experiences at work (she’s an RN). It’s going to be tough, but I think the fulfillment I’ll feel from attaining and utilizing practical, life-saving knowledge will be so worth this transitional period.

So I changed my major my junior year, and I spent the last year and a half working completing the prerequisites and classes for a bachelor’s. Now I applied at University of Mobile accelerated nursing program which is 12 months! I’m excited and nervous!!! Like I don’t know what to expect or if I can handle it. I am planning to do this, but I need to take my prerequisites, m not sure whether I should do it online or from community college? When I look at online option there are 6-7 courses I need to do n when I look at community college option they require you to do a lot more. They require you to take entrance exam, TOEFL(since my education is from outside US) n then m required to do prerequisites in order to do prerequisites for nursing. I really want to do this, but I feel this is but confusing n complicated for me right now. Anyone who’s done it from community college, could you tell me how long does it take to complete your prerequisites from there?
I am 30 right now n mother of two beautiful daughter, I really want to have an identity and a good career. I really want to work towards this but my experience in terms of communication between me n community college staff had not been that good. They are kind of laid back when it comes to responding to my questions. I really hope m able to do it.

Look into online studying for the prerequisites and testing for them at
      clep.collegeboard.org/exams
These are specifically going to help you acquire these prerequisites faster. When you are ready to test for Toefel, I suggest you find the material on youtube and study guides you could test for that too. It's a long journey but it will be worth it especially if you decide to pursue higher education, you'll be a step ahead with the prerequisites. Alternatively go to a private school take an rn, then go the rn bsn route but you could require prerequisites for it (not sure)

Granddaughters 12 month ABSN course accepted approximately 110 students 1800 applied, 200 received interviews. 7 months in 80 are left. Some that left program were placed into traditional nursing course. She is so fortunate; has such a supportive hubby and has terrific grandparents Ha. All course work will be finished before the last semester because of Covid. Last semester- clinicals, job hunting and NCLEX study grad 12/18/2020.

awesome! Psychology seems to be a super popular major for people looking to go into nursing! Good luck in your pre-reqs! Once you beast through those it gets so much better!

Might be too late but best to get pre requisites during undergraduate if you can.

This video is incredibly helpful and encouraging!
So I ended up majoring in psychology with a minor in substance abuse counseling at my current university.. Unfortunately, I started as pre-nursing when I came in as a freshman (4 years ago) but I made a hasty I decision I didn't want to apply to nursing school saying I did not feel ready (more like I really had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and picked nursing coming in) but I wanted to study something I knew I would enjoy learning about first and then find a career after. So I completed all the nursing prereqs, I majored in psychology and then got some experience working in a healthcare field and here I am in my senior year, one semester left after this current one.. wanting to actually become a nurse now.. but with the added addition of the end goal being a psychiatric nurse practitioner... :)
