How To Pull a Honda Computer
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 фев 2025
- This video shows how to pull a computer out of an old AND a new Honda. It also shows the location of the transmission computer where applicable. If you're looking for how to remove a computer on a Honda, this is your video.
Most times all you need is a 10mm socket or wrench. I recommend a couple of extensions as well.
If you're not familiar with Pull-A-Part, they're a self service salvage company in the US. They have 25 yards in 12 states. I'm not just saying this, but they've become my favorite place to go for salvage parts. I suggest you check them out.
To make it easy, here's a link to their website: www.pullapart.com

I don't know what's up with these junkyard videos....but I'm thoroughly enjoying them.
I'm happy to here that. I've got a bunch more over the next week.
A lot of people don't like these videos, but they need to understand that by doing these videos it allows you to put more resources into the more entertaining videos like the Fairmont Project.
Plus they are just as educational as any other video you make. It confuses me that people get upset suddenly when you're making money.
Can't fault a man for earning a living. It's not like any of us don't know that this is Eric's full-time job and that he has sponsors. He COULD just rattle off a 2 minute "Audible" or personal trainer commercial in all of his videos like everyone else did for awhile. Thank god he has some class and only accepts sponsorships that apply this his channel.
Im sure some ricer wants to put a ebay computer in his Accord for 100 hp/200mpg, and wants to know where it is/how to access it/remove it. And you might be able to relate this to other vehicles, and it at least gives you places to look. Besides Volkswagons of course, those are right under the vent by the windshield because they want them all to fail due to water damage and charge you $1200 to replace it...
It seems people don't like change or when I try something new. This series of videos was designed to help the people that need this information. I gladly took the sponsorship based on that alone.
I really like these vids when your pickin' parts a the salvage yard - real life part access and money saving. I just save a bunch of bucks pulling a 2000 Toyota Corolla computer through salvage over buying a new part. So far all is working well. More of these salvage yard vids would be greatly appreciated especially if you could demo how you assure that the parts you're pulling are in good repair - thanks - I like your stuff a lot - being a computer screen mechanic learner
I'm glad you like them. There'll be a bunch more before I'm done. Looking to wrap them up next week and get back to the Fairmont. Thanks for your comment.
I live in Atlanta and visit that same Pull-A-Part location. I love going there to browse for parts.
I loved it there too.
As far as sponsored content goes Eric, this is great and useful stuff! Thanks so much for all your work on our behalf!
Thank you for the comment!
I do wish junk yards in MA were this nice. They stack cars on top of each other.... in the mud.
Make sure that the replacement computer has the same part number as the one in your vehicle. Generally speaking, they must match exactly to function properly. Manual trans cars have different computers than automatics, 2WDs have different computers than 4WDs, ect.
The only difference on older computers is manual or auto. Many of them run a separate computer for an auto if it has one.
Fair enough. The newer the vehicle, the more specific it becomes. Super crucial with OBDII.
No surprise that most of the fasteners were already removed on that CB7. The TCU in my old one failed literally the day after I bought it and almost every single one at the junk yard had already been removed. I was lucky enough to score a remanufactured one out of a car all the way in the back that had been there for a day.
These computers are great for custom EFI projects. The cases are designed to be fully grounded or even watertight and the connectors can be rewired to avoid changing out the electrical harness.
Just last night I was watching a video you did years ago where you removed and cleaned a blower motor from this same car!
Another few for 800k. Way to go Eric
I wish I could disconnect that quickly :-0 I'm always struggling with components so I won't break tabs. Thanks Eric.
Its been a while but as I recall they used to bolt them inside the drivers side kick panel?
Eric, could you do a how to remove parts from a wrecked car? like easily removing a damaged radiator from a bent in core support for clearance, or a rear glass removal of a trunk that is dented over the seal. these are all just random examples. OHHH and tips for determining if an engine or transmission is still salvageable even after the battery has been removed or the cats are cut out
For your first question, often times if the area is already damage, brute force is the best option. Large pry bars, big hammer, etc. No one will miss a destroyed core support, so do what you gotta do to get it bent somewhat out of the way.
Loving these salvage yard hacks.
Hello Eric, I follow your videos and you've been very helpful. Question I have a 99 accord ex coupe had to get the rear subframe replaced, but now my key gets stuck in the ignition after I wiggle the gear shifter it releases the key any ideas what it could be.. Thanks Tony from Chicago
Eric,Is that SNOW on the ground behind you? Also are being friendly with the "Junkyard" DOG!
It looks like just over exposed section of the video since that area has sun exposed on it.
As soon as I hit reply I realized it's white gravel! Plus he's where a short sleeve shirt and we can't see his breath! (to me) DUHHHHHHHHHH!
great video.. so on older cars there is 2 computers. take both... and on newer cars they are both in 1.. right?
I like these videos, keep em up..
I'm glad to hear that. I had fun making them.
Check out fi tech efi. Its a 4 barrel throttle body. They have systems ranging from 400hp -1000hp or more. Its boost friendly and they have boost control and launch control self learning. Its very affordable. Around 1000$ ready to go.
Good video Eric thanks for posting
for the people in Canada I really like standard auto wreckers, free to get in and same idea u pull ur own part and get it cheaper, there's also anther yard called Kenny u pull as well if you dont have a standard auto wreckers but Kenny charges you 2$ to get into their yard and they don't have as much as standard auto wreckers. yall are welcome.
at least they were in a clean and safe location... today they put them in the dirty and hot engine compartment... next will be inside the oil pan or fuel tank
These 'computers' are very low power things compared to many other things. Heat isn't really an issue for them. What is more an issue for them is vibration and moisture. Which is why if you ever open these up you will find they have been filled will silicone snot to both keep components from vibrating and breaking solder joints and to keep moisture out. They are pretty much water proof, the wiring harness is more vulnerable to water then the actual box.
3rd Gen camry (1992-1996) have them right next to the hvac blower motor (right underneath the passenger glove box)
i think now eric spends most of his time at salvage yard. hahahaha.
Actually, I've been hanging out in salvage yards since I was a kid. My grandfather used to work at one and I'd love going to work with him just to hang out.
+EricTheCarGuy so then you have pretty decent experience with salvage yard. great. wishing you always best for your job.
hey eric the car guy can you please tell me how long it takes to become a mechanic because I want to do the same has your doing in your videos
Being a mechanic and making RUclips videos are 2 very different things. More info on how I ended up doing what I do here. Good luck. www.ericthecarguy.com/about-etcg
but what kind of degree and course did you do in uni because i really want to do the same thing that your doing in your videos since i want to do the same thing in my career
So, when you take a computer from a car with an immobilizer, can you acquire the key to the car from the junkyard so that you may be able to start the vehicle? I know that getting the immobilizers in computers can be tricky if you don't have a key to go with it. A lot of people transfer the chips by soldering but I was just wondering about this.
Good point. You'd have to have it programmed at your local honda dealer. I don't think you'll need the key though.
Do these computers really break sometimes or do they get water-damage or something?
Sure they do - they're electronic items and electronics fail but they are often replaced needlessly because of a poor diagnosis. They can be damaged by external influences like bad wiring and if that outside influence isnt corrected prior to the computer replacement, the replacement will also fail, becoming nothing but an expensive fuse.
The TCMs, on atleast the CB7 Accords, the version he pulled one out of, fail at a rather high rate. Had the same issue when I had mine.
Not often, but the people at the yard said people ask how to remove these all the time. Now they have a video they can refer them to.
"expensive fuse" is an excellent way to put it.
hey, tks for posting yr videos , can you make a video on how to troubleshoot an 8 gen. Honda civic airbag system and also how to swap a control module from another car without a crash memory, tks good job
So how much was your soul worth Eric? lol just kidding man still love your videos.
Not even humorous. Eric has every right to make money making videos, and that money helps him make more and better videos. Not to mention, as far as sponsored content goes, this is pretty damn good sponsored content.
I never said otherwise I was just making a joke man lighten up a little
I took it as a joke. No worries.
did you roll through the junkyard just taking shit out for video material or were you collecting some spare parts for common vehicles you repair to stockpile them up?
They had a list of the most commonly asked questions about what people wanted to pull and I worked through that list.
Hey guys! This seems like a good place to ask what a code 4 means on an 88' Honda Prelude (3rd gen). I've read it means bad tcm, bad pcm and like three other things including a worn out torque converter. I'm not too car savvy and my research has only gotten me more confused! Sometimes it drives fine and other times it just revs while its in Drive and won't go unless it's babied under 10mph. Thanks in advance for any help.
www.ericthecarguy.com/obd-code-lookup
how can you goto a wrecking yard when there's snow Eric! it's way too cold here during winter it gets to -30 celcius and we have like snow upto my knees in the winter too, I never go but the standard auto wreckers had this deal what ever it is below 0 you get that as a discount, example -30 = 30% discount but still too cold to go haha
Well, he said, that the yard is covered with gravel. Also: i wouldn't go in just a t-shirt if there was snow laying around.
2 Things. 1 It's the best time to go, less people taking the parts you need. 2. It's kind of fun, in one trip I ended up helping 3 people and they helped me with tools I'd forgotten, and I helped out with the same, so we could all get outta there. One guy had an MTX jeep transmission with t/c. That's how you get the good stuff. Just be prepared with the right clothing.
+PGTMR2 I helped a guy find a gas cap once in seconds I seen him when he left so I knew what car he was driving and he was there before I got there I go into the yard and I was just chatting with him and he's like man I've been looking for a dam gas cap for 45 mins now do you think you could help me, I'm not kidding the first car I checked had a bunch of shit in the back I opened the door and a brand new gas gap was sitting on top he was so thankful and I found it funny how within minutes of me getting there I found one but he couldn't but I'm glad I could help out, I really enjoy talking to people there and hearing what their getting parts for
+Piotr Porada most yards are sand or gravel sand is the worst tho sticks to ur back and usually is wet
DeadlyVoltsHD
I helped someone take out a driver's window in 2 minutes. I had the right tools. They would have been there for an hour trying to get it out. I couldn't have done it that fast if I was looking for a window for my car! So far as sand and gravel find a trunk liner and put it under the car. You can usually find one that's not perfectly clean, so you're not ruining something for someone else, yet not too filthy to lay on. Or even just a warped cardboard piece that covers the spare or floor mat.
What about the immobiliser system, doesnt the ECU/PCM module have to be reset before you can marry it to a other car ?
Dont know how it works with Honda/Acura, but with Opel/Vauxall/Saturn the ECU/PCM is part of the immo system
On late model computers you'll need to set that up with a Honda scan tool.
What are you doing with all the parts - resell? Thx
I just put them back in the cars they come out of.
can you do a tear down on them and explain how they work for us ? :D
Was there snow on the ground?
It's actually just the gravel they use at Pull-A-Part. I go to the Atlanta location occasionally (he filmed these in Atlanta) and they're really good about putting fresh gravel down. When you see the yard on a sunny day it looks like snow.
How do you know if you have a short throw dip stick?
where did the snow come from? it's june!

well now I've got 2 opposing answers. what am I supposed to do with these.
He filmed these in March, if you check the pictures on his Instagram. I live here and it definitely wasn't snowing in March. It snowed once, overnight in February and was gone by the time the sun came out. As usually happens in Georgia.
I don't have any of those social things. what, are you a weather man? who remembers weather from 3 months ago? I live in Minnesota and don't mind forgetting.
I shot this back in March.
2006 accord sedan I'm getting alot of clicking in driver kick panel and the green key dosen't stop flashing but the ignition is green light. It will randomly leave me sitting but this time it has been weeks with no luck. I am atleast getting fuel pump now but key still flashing with NO START plz help!) Tnx
Hey Eric!
Hey!
So safety glasses is necessary for removing computer?
Considering the stuff your likely to encounter inside a car in a salvage yard, its a very good idea.
In salvage cars, yes. They are gross.
is this the same on the 7th generation accord? (2003+)
How come there are so many ads for Pecker Pills on your channel?
ads are personalized to your account and IP. Its all about the pages you visit and google searches.
+Dead April well he ratted himself out lol
+Jaron Barendse ya for real dude. stay on tor for that shit....lol
Likely because the demographic for my channel is 18-55 year old males.
I have a 2015 Honda Accord and the autozone diagnostic is reading P2101 Throttle Actuator Malfuction does anyone know the solution to this issue and where is my ECM located in my vehicle?
Eric does some promo videos and gets some free junk computers.
I didn't keep the parts. In fact, with some of these videos I pull parts for customers that were in the yard.
Just teasing, Eric.
No worries. No offense taken.
next up Eric, points us to his eBay page where all those ECM's are now for sale....
Something I have to do very soon to R&R the ECU for supercharger installation on my 2004 TL MT (2004 & 2005 TL ECU's are not re-writable and CAN cable must be hooked up onto the OBD-II port, so I had to get a 2008 TL ECU & conversion harness).
I envy the old style for super easy access..... I never liked Honda's sense of humor.....
Yup. Older models were a breeze, newer cars...you need a nice day, nothing pressing on your nerves, maybe some classical music. I don't even want to think about the future, i'll probably needs someone to unbend me if i'd have to reach under wherever they will stash it next.
Hahaha, I wouldn't be surprised to see smart phones being installed in place of ECU/TCU one of theses days (iPhone made in China, Samsung made in Korea.....).....getting hacked/cracked by malicious geeks.....your engine revving up at a red light.....stalling when trying to merge into a freeway lol.....
I'll rely on a classical music.
your the man E
is it anyway to check for codes at a junkyard on a car with no battery and key . (i have a code reader)
You need both in order to read codes.
Any idea what a code 4 means on an 88' Honda Prelude?
Passenger side dildo needs a workout
+Samuel Gonzalez I'm on it! Thnx!
some junk yards will lend you a battery for testing purposes me and my buddy went for an engine fired one up and it locked up in 7 seconds xD next car kept running so that worked for us
Does anyone know if this applies to a gen 1 (96) Odyssey?
احسنت يا صديقي
love it
#FarimontProject
these videos are 2 minutes long, make them into one big video, most of us will be happy and you will make more money.
shorter the video the faster it uploads
+DeadlyVoltsHD the shorter the video more uploading to do
You know, I honestly don't mind these so long as they're not flooding my subscription page when I get on. But many times while working on my car I wished there were short clips for specific tasks from people who know what they're doing. If only we had more Erics in the world able and willing to share and upload their expertise in such a visually pleasing manner.
If you wqnt to know how to remove the PCM from your civic, why watch videos of PCM removals from a Chevy then a Ford then a Nissan and several other makes before getting to your car which would probably be 6+ cars in?
Frank Gonzalez Hmm?
Can I email you a video of what my car is doing and maybe you can help me understand what's going on or diagnose from a video? @ericthecarguy
What about civic's? Cmon now there's more civic guys than there is accord guys
Good point. I'll look for one of those next time.
Most civic computers are just to the right of where the first computer he pulled was. In the kick panel under and to the right of the glove box.
+351cat I knew that just that he should've said something for the audience
Isn't it 98 - 02
ECM + TCM = PCM
Ho madh Elton cost
