  • If you need to remove the steering wheel, airbag, or cable reel from a Honda, this video can help. Since you need to remove the airbag to get to the fasteners for the steering wheel that removal is included in this video. I also took the time to remove the cable reel which houses the electronics for the steering wheel controls.
    If you need to remove the entire column, you can use this video.

    This was so handy! Working on an Acura MDX, could NOT get the wheel off. Rental steering whee puller useless. Hammer useless, tugging, pulling, cursing, all ineffective. Drumming on the rim for 5 seconds, Presto! Popped right off. Thank you Eric!

    I've been driving my Pilot for 7 years with the steering wheel out of alignment with the "straight" wheels. It bothered the heck out of me and I put it off because I was thinking it was off a tooth for the splines. Now I find out 2 screws and it spins freely to adjust.... Wow... Thank you so much!

    Eric's line was Honda, I give a tip on BMW steering wheels. Most guys have only made this mistake once. The wheel comes off rather easy, no puller required. The problem comes when you put the wheel on. You must have the turn signal in the neutral position or you break the plastic tab on the turn signal signal switch that shuts the signal off.Like I said, most guys only make this mistake once.

    Great idea Eric. Buy a fairly new junk car and just take everything apart piece by piece, kind of like a Haynes manual video style. When it is all taken apart, send it to the scrap. I'd say that would make at least ten or so videos. Do suspension, brakes, engine, transmission, body, and all the rest. Putting back is just reverse of removal. Do it to as many cars as possible, i'd watch.

    In Germany, you wouldn't find a steering wheel with an airbag installed in a junk yard. We have a regulation that used airbags are not allowed to be reused again in another vehicle (I'm not sure if it's allowed to transfer your own airbagg onto a new steering wheel). So every car that comes into the junk yard has to have its airbags removed by the junk yard personnel. Then they have to be detonated in a safe manner (nothing like 1puglife does it), and disposed of. Only new airbags are allowed as a replacement for any vehicle. I find that a total waste, but they say it is out of security concerns. Don't know how valid these are though.

    If my cable reel is bad and its causing horn to not work, will this affect the airbag too in case of crash? I have paddle shifters that are working fine though

  • @DJNoseT
    @DJNoseT 8 лет назад +4

    Only do this without a batterypower. Make sure that your battery ist disconnected for at least an hour until you start to remove the airbag! Otherwise the airbag can/will explode...

    Any chance of the airbag going off, or is that not a possibility after it has had no power applied to it for a long time?

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  8 лет назад

      Not really. I have yet to see one go off on it's own. The battery in these cars is long gone. The airbag will need power to go off.

    In Germany, the salvage yards are required to remove the airbag and detonate it due to safety reasons.
    Isn't that required in the US?!

      Used air bags can NOT be sold in New York State. The full service yards 'detonate' them for fun, and the pick and pull places will knife up the air bags when they process the car/truck. This all depends on state rules and regs.
