You know what I see in this movie? It's unconditional love, it's about unconditional love that emanates from Breezy. And the subplot with the injured dog adds to the main theme. It would be nice if what we see on the screen could come true for every person.

A really under rated movie directed by Clint Eastwood. William Holden played a great role...a middle aged and, in many ways, cynical man who falls in love for the first time in his entire life. The end line: "I give it a year...!" William Holden was also really great in Richard Mason's, The World of Suzie Wong, especially the Star Ferry scene...one of a kind!

This film deserved to be far more successful at the box office than it was. Clint Eastwood blamed "Universal" for poor advertising. The man himself can be spotted an hour into the movie for about 8 seconds but it's him!
The story is fairly simple but effective. The two leads are very good and the direction is also.

Well, I think there was a fair bit of titillation in there, too. When we first see Breezy get out of bed at the very start of the movie, the camera is zoomed in on her breasts. And then Eastwood zooms out to show the rest of her. And of course, the other nude scenes in the movie (not that I'm complaining too much, she was breathtakingly gorgeous perfection). But the rest of the time, he does portray her sensitively. It gives the effect of "This is someone that the main character would want to take care of" since she's so small and cute and earnest and a sweet little bottle of sunshine. They didn't go full 70s exploitation. They showed a young woman with her full youthful beauty, but also someone who loved with her whole heart. And that's what really sold the movie. If she was anything but earnest in her love, it wouldn't have worked. But she was, and it did.

Even an older Holden can pull this off and has done so in other films and real life. In Europe this type of relationship is more common (10-20) year difference. Of course in the move the difference is 30 plus years with Holden having issues with age difference getting the typical jealous stares from everyone . I speak with experience my girlfriends thru life have been on average 15-20 years younger even now at 62 I can still pull it off alibi getter harder lol ! Confidence, stay in shape, well off and it’s easy.

Candace Glendenning would’ve been perfect for this film too!

It's a movie for mature adults. Go play ball with the other kids.

I am the age of Holden's character and sure, it's nice to fantasize about having a Breezy of my own, but if I live to my 80s or 90s, what of her? I don't want to have children because I don't think it's fair to a child to have a father who doesn't have the energy to play with them and who'd be older than other children's grandfathers. When I'm gone, she'll be as old as I am now and alone. She'll have missed her chance to have children and to have someone with whom she can grow old. Is that fair to her? Does inheriting some of my money compensate for that?

You think too much. Just enjoy whatever joy life places in your path.

You night find a woman who doesn't care about children, they might place a higher value on finding true love, even if it can't last forever in the physical sense. They might appreciate the emotional value of the beautiful memories and the financial security you could leave them with. Don't be afraid to dream of it.

He was 40 years older than that child. Wow, it was creepy back then and it's even creapier now.

I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate the value of true love between people, no matter their ages. If you find it creepy, you don't know what unconditional love is.

it looks way twee and cloying - also a bit pervy. Kay Lenz was better in other films & tv projects ! A better film is Jack Lemmon in Save the Tiger from almost the same year.
