These mining towns were in the middle of nowhere. All supplies had to make it in on horse drawn wagon at first. Trains came later, if at all. Supplies were always low compared to the number of people they had to fees. If they charged normal prices, they would've been out of food in a few days, waiting on another wagon that was days or longer away. Supply and demand isn't that hard of a concept to grasp. Unless you're a communist.
Where the money printers are the prices go up. The Free Market means the smart people dig up and leave rather than stick around to get swindled, or show up with food and pickaxes to sell. Being stupid and mining and spending is their fault. A gold rush means inflation and the closer you are the worse it is. Commies would just make it so nobody gets the money but them. Socialists would take it from everyone working for it and give it mostly to themselves. Free Market just means you gotta be smart. Everything else makes you a servant.
I actually took out an outlaw, who had a .357 magnum out with a rock in real life, much like the scene where the sheriff chases the bad guy with rocks, and this is where I got the idea!!!
