After the 100m final in Atlanta, Popov was asked by a journalist among the U.S. media present at the post-race press conference to name his favourite actors but replied: “I don’t dream about actors and actresses. They should dream about me. I’m reality.” 😀
Awesome interview with the Russian Rocket (although: in your 40s, a bit o’ grey in the beard isn’t “old age”) but aside from the ageism (hopefully in jest) excellent to see the Rocket.
I remember reading in the papers about his 50m world record, quite late in his career. I don't think this interview mentions this. Great interview though...
The inflated rivalry between Hall Jr. and Popov was dramatic because it was like Rocky 4. Pop culture played a tremendous role in building hype and it was great for the sport of swimming, even if it was mostly theater. Those were great races!
I'm getting back into swimming after about 35 years since I went to swimming school for 2 weeks. I have made progress I can now swim around 20 metres FS, 50m BS, 50m BKS after initially having difficulty just floating. But during my teenage years, I remembered two swimmers I admired because they just were like swans in the water and just glided they were Popov & Thorpe. I wished Popov & Thorpe can help me learn to swim..Im sure my progress would be expedited 100x faster.
There is another Alexander who had good achievement : Alexander Dityatin, Russian former gymnastic athlete. For gymnastic, though, Nikolai Andrianov had better achievement than Dityatin, esp at Olympics : collecting 7 golds from 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics.
Great interview! At about 16 minutes in Popov talks about physical training and mentions 600 units. What is he referring too? Is there a name associated with this type of training?
Got this from a Swimming World article about Gennadi Touretski's training methods: Week 1: 200 fitness units per day. Exercises: Push ups, chin ups, dips, step ups, body weight squats, burpees. Must do at least 20 units (repeats) of each exercise. No more than 50 of any one exercise. Week 2: 300 fitness units per day. No more than 75 of any one exercise. Week 3: 400 fitness units per day. Etc. No more than 100 of any one exercise. As the total units per day goes up by 100 each week, the max units per exercise goes up by 25, and the minimum units for all exercises goes up by 10. He said this was to give the athletes more freedom to choose their daily workouts. Could just keep it simple and do 100 of each exercise as a benchmark for 600 units.
He was a jerk to Gary Hall....came up to him out of the blue and said some pre-race putdowns and intimidation comments ..... he was always too egotistical and smug for many people but for a couple Olympics anyway it worked for him......he failed pretty bad in 2000 and 2004 though.
@@grandekevin4065 did you even comprehend what i wrote? apparently not.....you never mentioned about how he acted and his reputation, did you??? He was known for not having a good one....(he was also known for doping, bigtime!) I was mainly referring to him being a jerk to Gary Hall, and that's putting it nicely....he really said some out of line comments to him...why don't you look it up yourself and see what Gary Hall had to say about what Popov said to him?.....sad and pathetic. no respect ever for Popov....I stand by my convictions... #JusttheFactsJack #KeepingIt100
Garry Hall got his ass badly beaten at home in 1996 Atlanta, also in Rome in 1994 ,Popov came 2 in 2000 100 meters beating him again) and he was almost 33 in 2004. There’s no any comparison between them, for everyone who followed the sport,Alexander is the greatest sprinter ever!Bye-bye,salty loser. P.S.Popov has never been caught or even rumouring for using dops, stop lying.

I still remember that quote.
The most elegant technique for a sprinter, the speed from it was insane.
The greatest sprinter in the world.
The legend himself!! Best sprint ever.
Popovici, the new Popov.
Thanks for this interview! I love his bluntness and humor. "Your mobile network is crap." "Shit happens." I remember him being so intense in the pool.
He is still dashing!
"Every length. Every length."
Love it. Great interview Brett!
Amazing interview. Would love to see an interview with Pieter van den Hoogenband as well. Any chance you're doing an interview with him?

It's a fantastic line up you have Brett! Amazing to see so many greats chatting away ... everyone of your guests leaves a legacy in swimming.
I had a huge crush on Popov when I was a teenager 🤣
Great podcast! Popov was my favourite in the 90s!
Excelente, para mi Popov nadador el mejor de todos los tiempos. Saludos desde Patagonia Argentina!!!!

EL MEJOR. THE BEST. El ZAR...
Thank you very much for the interview! It‘s simply gold for a nerdy swimming fan!
Excellent interview. Especially the part on the rivalries, which are inevitable in big sport.
Amazing interview. Both legents

welcome home
The swim sprint GOAT
Great interview ! Love it
Oh my idol, hope you can visit Philippines .....
And here comes Popov..ici
Incroyablement
Along with the wrestler Alexander Karelin, the best Russian athlete ever.

He's talking reps. So your resistance training will end when you hit 600units or reps in total.
@@coachvictor4826 Thanks for the clarification!

Yup that's the death sets...total reps on push-up sit ups ..etc..600.per day

I guess silver olympic medal (in 2000.) might be called 'failure' (if you are Popov). I wonder what you have won?
