Thank you once more, Dr. Sledge- I never thought I'd become so fond of Cornelius Agrippa as I am today, and I owe it all to you! Personally I don't entirely buy the idea that Agrippa's writing in support of women was merely a tactic to impress the empress and gain himself a job. I lean in this direction for two reasons: One, I don't think that Agrippa ever seems to have written anything that he didn't have a personal passion for, so I doubt he would have gone all-in on the feminism unless he really felt there was some truth to be told. The other reason is that Agrippa never seemed to prioritize, or even to be clearly aware of, the fact that his frank honesty may have (and often did) get him into serious trouble. I feel that he was a passionately honest neuro-divergent person who was largely unaware of the impression he was making politically, at least not until it was too late to avoid calamity. If he were such a slick political operator, I doubt he would have run into half of the strife that marked his life. Therefore, I believe that his feminism was probably (or at leas probably mostly) sincere. Besides, he was a genius, and women demonstrably ROCK. He wasn't wrong. Of course all of my opinions on Agrippa are based on your lectures, so I must always defer to you when it comes to any claims I may have of understanding the man. Wonderful series, deeply inspiring! Sharing it with all my friends! Let me chime in here on one thing. I'm one of the early astral magic / image magic revivalists, and have been involved since around 2000. I've made several thousand talismans in the Agrippa and Picatrix styles, so I've put a lot of thought into the theory behind the practice. There is less of a contradiction between the theurgical aspirations of Agrippa and his colleagues and practical Saturnine, Martial and Venereal magics than it seems. Most practicing magicians of this era had patrons, and those patrons were usually of the nobility. The idea that aristocrats were closer to God than the common folk still had some sway, and what might be forbidden for the common man was surely not forbidden to God. Engaging in magics which might seem sordid or disturbing for oneself, might be seen a kind of patriotism or second-hand piety on behalf of the king. The distinction between an election to fortunate an invasion for a prince's army is quite similar to planting a talisman for devastation inside the enemy city gates. A difference is that with the talisman, there is less risk of losing troops. Other re-framings can argue in favor of the use of Saturnine, Venereal and many other magics as lesser evils. The distinction between intelligences of the Malefics and demonic entities is that the former often perform necessary but grim tasks as their roles in a fallen world, and demons seek corruption and damnation even when donning guises of compassion and innocence. The planets, all seven, were put in place by the One Most High, and thus serve a greater good and obey necessity. Demons also serve, but unwillingly, and with less permission. Planetary intelligences have legitimate God-endowed authority, while demons attempt to usurp their roles. Saturn and Mars and their works are a part of the Good, because death and conflict perform necessary duties. And God himself is known to do a fair bit of smiting evil from time to time; the Malefics are celestial expressions of God's judgement. There is no doubt that these ambiguities troubled Agrippa and his colleagues, but there are arguments in favor of these practices within the context of the era and probable beliefs. In any case, that's my view at the moment. I can't wait to watch the next lecture; you are bringing great light into this world.
