    Over my many years of reloading for many cartridges, I have learned a few things, all IMR powders but 8208 are temperature sensitive, and when using ball powders, always use magnum primers or their equivalent, and H4895 is the most versatile powder across the reloading spectrum, from reduced recoil loads to full power in a large list of calibers.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  8 месяцев назад +3

      In my experience, the Alliant powders are even more temperature sensitive than IMR powders. But, that is the nature of most Ball Powders.

    As PO Ackley said the best powder for a particular load is the one that best fills the case to the base of the bullet. When I’m developing a load for a rifle I always refer to loading manual that show the percent of case fill. It has to be 100% or above and I then start by dropping 2gr and work my up in 1/2 gr increments.

    Ensuring I don’t go over book values for my own safety, and relying on their years of data, I’ve been reasonably successful….. however recent load development on a 204 Ruger has been challenging. I’m getting 4200 fps at minimum load of XBR 27.8 gn. with a 32 gn. Zmax! Good groups but excess Std dev??

    I started reloading for economy very long ago. There was no internet of course but the good news was that most reloading manuals, even back then, had “accuracy” and “factory duplication” data that gave a reasonable starting point. Chronographs were rare birds as they were quite expensive so you read every manual you could get your hands on. I still think this is an acceptable way for new loaders to start, especially if they are of modest means. I agree with the observation about laziness DDO, I think the time spent on research does a great deal of good. Thanks for the post!

      They are now offering a fast twist 243 Win 1:8” (screw you 6mm Creedmoor) and for several years now a fast twist 22-250 in 1:8”. The South Africans love this for varmint.

    When I bought my first two dangerous game rifles a 416 Taylor improved, and 416 Remington magnum I always used RL15. It worked great with all the bullet weights I used, but then it practically disappeared off the shelf and I still have not seen any in person to buy since like 2020. First off load data for the 416 Remington with different powders was easy to find, but the 416 Taylor was quite a bit harder to come by especially for 300-350 gr bullets. Thanks to some guys helping me with quick load data I was able to keep the 416 taylor running with different powders. Now IMR 4064 and IMR 4166 are two of my favorite powders for both 416’s. Also have some 350 gr loads made to try this weekend in my 416 Taylor Imp. Loaded with ramshot big game (my favorite powder for the 9.3x62) looking forward to seeing how it stacks up against 4166 and 4064. Plan on grabbing some H4895 to try also when I get the chance. That’s the great thing about handloading, just trying different things and seeing the outcomes. Great video DD!

    So, what's the problem with shooting downhill with an 80% case fill? I'd love to hear this one. Most loads are not 100% filled or a compressed load. I'm not gonna choose a powder by case fill, I will choose a powder by burn rate, velocity and accuracy.

Good thing I stocked up on primers before 2020 but I am running out of powder except very slow powder not suitable for the weight of bullets my 1:9.5 factory barrel will stabilize. Reloader 22 is the best powder for my 150-175 gr. bullet combo and is unattainable. Neither is Reloader 26 my second favorite powder or any other suitable powder that gives magnum performance.
