  • In 2018 and 2019 many of the cars are in North America are disappearing for SUVs. At the same time certain smaller cars are getting better and with the release of the new Forte, Kia is trying to add all of the things buyers want while keeping things simple. With competition shrinking yet heating up, Mazda, Honda, and Toyota are trying their hand at moving things upscale. The new Corolla, Mazda3 and Civic are prime examples of that yet in the case of the Forte the entry cost is lower.

This to me, from a mechanic's standpoint is a no nonsense car.
Pressed steel TCA's. Easy and cheap to replace.
Macpherson struts. Easy and cheap to replace.
Rear shocks. Easy and cheap to replace.
    Handbrake cable. Easy to replace.
Port injection. No gunky sticky valves.
I see cars for what they are and can tell whether I'm getting ripped off. This looks like a Lego car in terms of stripping it down and replacing serviceable parts etc. I like this.
Tip: As with all cars made in warm dry places, get it Crown rust proofed. $500 and it'll last forever.

@@EdgyNumber1 I am debating between getting a hyundai elantra/sonata or the kia forte.
The Kia I can get for 14-15k, and the Elantra, which has debatable looks, at 12.5-13k.
      Kia comes with standard warranties.
Hyundai comes with lifetime engine warranty.
I am literally looking for the best car sub 15k with warranty. I can work on my own stuff, but a warranty that provides complimentary engine replacements or a 120 month powertrain like kia is always nice.
I currently drive a mk4 jetta and all the little things that go wrong with german cars are showing up. I don't plan on attempting to rebuild the manual trans in it when it either needs new clutches or grenades itself, and I should be getting an insurance settlement from an old wreck soon, so dealership time I guess.

@@colt2419 Don't put TOO much faith in a super-long warranty from the manufacturer. When it comes to warranty issues, it's the independent dealer, who will likely say anything (including baselessly blaming you for the problem) to avoid doing warranty work - not the manufacturer - whom you'll have to deal with. In my experiences with new cars, between many different brands and dealers, that has been the case, consistently.

No, its because ford and GM are fucking braindead and didn't use their comparably large number of resources to fix obvious downsides to their small cars, such as the DCT in the ford or the crappy engine in the cruze. The reviews on these cars were clear, and lost comparison tests to their Japanese and German rivals for many of the same reasons, and yet Ford doesn't give a shit. And when those lackluster cars failed to sell, they bailed.

I considered this new 2019 Forte and the sister 2019 Hyundai Elantra when car shopping. I crossed off the Forte before even test driving because A) the IVT transmission is brand-new and not yet proven to be durable and B) I didn't want a hard riding car. I live in the city where the roads can be rough. So over to the Elantra I went. The more I looked at the 2019 Elantra, the less I liked the updated styling compared to the 2018. Plus, Hyundai was offering a $3k rebate on the 2018 versus $1,000 rebate for the 2019. I test drove the 2018 Elantra and fell in love. It looks really nice inside and out. It's comfortable. It drives well. It's quiet. The fuel economy is stellar. Been averaging right around 40mpg in mostly city driving. The reason I crossed off every other competitor from my list was for one or more of the following reasons: Priced thousands higher at real world prices (Japanese), much shorter warranties (all competitors), bad reliability track records (domestics), lack of mechanical simplicity and low running costs (i.e. turbo engines, CVTs, Direct Injection). The Elantra, and secondarily, the Forte, offer good reliability, low running costs, long warranties, and lower prices. Yet, they still offer lots of tech, handsome looks, and great build quality. I'm gentle with my vehicles, so we'll see how well it holds up with time.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 5 лет назад +12

@@moeanthony9308 So far I'm not minding the torsion beam at all. The ride quality is quite good. That's not to say it wouldn't ride even better with an independent rear setup, but with the torsion beam in the 2018 Elantra, it's very acceptable. In modern cars, the suspension tuning seems to play a bigger factor in ride quality than whether it's independent or torsion beam rear suspension. I've driven plenty of vehicles with independent suspension that don't ride any better than, or in some cases worse than, the 2018 Elantra. Independent vs. torsion beam rear setup should not be a deciding factor when car shopping. The feeling in the seat of your pants should be.

When I got into SavageGeese, I wished he had reviewed the Kia Korte Koup 2011 I bought in December 2010. It's still my daily driver. I bought it at a time when (like he said at the end) I had to buy a car, to go to work, and do my daily tasks. And I love my car. It's been super dependable, I've put a lot of miles on it, and the only things that have gone wrong are silly stupid things, like the dome light bulbs. Replaced for $6 at O'Reilly Auto Parts. I've driven it on long trips, for years. Miami to Jupiter, to go surfing. I've driven it from Miami to CHarlotte, twice. It still runs great. Zero engine problems. True, it's not the most comfortable car. The Koup versions are even tighter spaced, but you get used to it. I also bought it because I loved the way it looked. Even though crushed when my girlfriend at the time was embarrassed by it, and made me feel bad about owning a Kia. I think it still looks good, and she was wrong. I didn't want to buy a Honda Civic like every other broke bro in Miami. I wanted something different, something special. They stopped making the Koup in 2015, I think. I'm never getting rid of it. I think the first gen Kia Koups are classics, no matter what anyone says. It's cool to see that they've evolved into a really cool, modern car today. In 2010, having cool and heated seats, separate climate controls, and an infotainment system like this for $26,000 was unheard of.

I think 26k is too high for one of these but the low 20's wouldn't be too painful. The styling looks great too, the location of the exterior turn signals that Hyundai/Kia seem to be doing now across the board are STUPID, they should've made the tail lights blink red. Depending on the vehicle oil changes are not cheap if you're using the correct product. A modern GTI for example winds up costing about $80 if you are using the correct oil in the vehicle.
Use better oil, like Amsoil full synthetic and change the filter every time with a high quality unit, and stick to the suggested change intervals and your engine will likely last to 250,000+ miles with today's ICE cars. Changing oil earlier than the recommended interval doesn't provide any benefit if the oil you're taking out is still in spec, and it will add up in cost over time. If you tow or drive your vehicle hard a shorter change interval may be needed, but provides no benefit to the average driver. Regular maintenance has a larger effect over a vehicle's lifespan than early oil changes.

I have to say, I now look to Kia as the savior of the low priced car. I've always been a German car guy but my girlfriend has a Forte 5 door and I am constantly impressed by what you get for your money. I don't even see the torsion beam rear as an issue having driven a Mk2 VW GTI for 18 years...they still handle just fine. At this point, Kia is delivering a product with amenities not present in my BMW 330, and although there's no way in hell I'd trade, I will say that whoever is looking for a reliable and inexpensive new car would be remiss if they didn't seriously consider these. Great review, as usual.

Hey man, I got American version with cvt. Do you have cvt tranny? When in normal drive mode and when you set cruise control, does rpm jump 500-750 more higher than what it was set at when driving a specific speed using your foot on gas pedal? My car does.
only in manual sport mode the Cruise control sets rpm at the same as driver has it using foot. So either a bug or glitch in computer logic programmed wrong with higher rpms which cause mpg loss.

I have to say I am impressed with KIAs thought process. I have a 2014 Optima, 2.4 GDI, serviceability is great (compared to similar cars) and so often manufacturers (especially Japanese and Germans) forget that. I actually like my leather seats (Im sure they are different from the forte). My car doesnt have any weird rattles or squeaks and is VERY quiet on the road. The car has been reliable too, although there was a bearing issue they found. Mine hasnt suffered from it but they have given lifetime warranty for and even changed the software to detect bearing knock for us. Its an appliance, not a performance car for enthusiasts and as such works great, good gas-mileage, great features. Mine isnt a CVT, 6 speed auto, which shifts when I expect it to (take note Chrysler) but my biggest gripe is that the traction control is way too intrusive, hopefully they have fixed that. Driving in the wet often has me turning it off for quicker launches from a light, and turning it back on in case I hit puddles. Anyway, great review of the Forte, it matches up with the things I have noticed on my Optima. It definitely makes me think a stinger would be a great car. People do need affordable daily driver "appliance" cars and its so nice to have cooled seats and other similar features my car even has heated rear seats...

The ECU is pulling on the timing and doesn't' accelerate like a turbo should. Just google "the wave veloster turbo" .
Not sure why not just turbo-charge the 2.0L instead and forget about that 1.6 already, it's weak and it's becoming obsolete and slow with all the STs and GTIs and whatever budget rocket buckets out there or coming soon.

SG hit the bullseye when he mentioned the Forte in the context of "new drivers." It's a car packed with tech. And it's premium tech. A vehicle that parents can buy and send their kid off to school with the safety systems they feel good about. It's roomier than the competition. Susie or Billy can travel back and forth on holidays loaded with stuff or out with several friends. Likewise, for recent grads buying their own first car while drowning in student loan debt it's also affordable. And that 41 highway mpg will jump off the window sticker in the showroom. At the end of the day in the market segment KIA is aiming for a CVT (especially a good one) and torsion bar suspension won't be a deal breaker. Few buyers will even notice.
KIA no longer advertises an MSRP thousands of dollars less than the competition. They're selling features and value for the price. But the fact remains that KIA dealers are likely to be more flexible in price negotiations than Honda or Toyota dealers. Getting a discount of a few thousand bucks isn't difficult, especially for upper level trims. And comparing feature for feature the Forte will likely come out ahead of a Corolla or a Civic for many customers. Toyota and Honda will sell many more Corollas and Civics but Kia buyers will feel they got a better deal for their money.
Finally, KIA's game doesn't end with the Forte. Brand loyalty isn't what it used to be but selling a first car to a customer is still valuable to a manufacturer. If a first time owner is happy with a vehicle they're likely to take a serious look at the next step up the model ladder. When the time comes KIA will be ready with an Optima, a Sorento, or even a Stinger.

GIlbert Galvin: I"ve found KIA dealers more willing to make deals than most other brands (especially Toyota). But keep in mind that a Forte won't be discounted as heavily (in terms of $$$) as higher priced models. If you can get as much as 10-15% off MSRP, you're probably doing well.
I've found the best strategy involves (a) researching exactly the trim level and options you want ahead of time; (b) set a price you're willing to pay and stick to it; (c) if you can, put down a substantial down payment or pay cash and have a strong credit rating; (d) cast as wide as possible a geographic net for multiple dealers and let each know that you're comparing prices; and (e) shop seriously toward the end of a month. You can usually get a slightly better deal because manufacturer "holdbacks" and other dealer benefits are based on total monthly sales.
In addition, don't fall for a salesperson telling you he/she will "show you the invoice" to convince you that's a rock bottom price. It's a common scam but the invoice does not represent the "holdback" and other benefits a manufacturer provides a dealer based on total vehicle sales. Be careful when dealing with the "finance guy." You'll probably be forced to talk to him/her even if you're planning to write a check for the purchase price. And you'll probably be told that the fantastic KIA warranty the salesperson bragged about should be supplemented by an overpriced extended warranty.

Thank you for taking the time to cover a fairly modest car. Kia wouldn't be my go-to but I really appreciate their K.I.S.S. attitude on this model aside from the tech stuff in the cockpit. It's not over barring and oddly refreshing. Cheers!

I bought this car in the 6 speed manual back when they were first released. After driving it for nearly a year I couldn’t agree more with this review. It’s not the perfect car, but it achieves exactly what it’s intended for at a great price. I would recommend this car for anyone that needs an efficient commuter with lots of space. I am 6’3” and 350lbs and I fit in all the seats and even the trunk very easily. I have driven both transmissions and I can confidently say that the CVT version accelerates significantly faster than the manual model. Great review!

Kia makes a great first impression lol I would be curious to see some owners thoughts after a few months of owning it. But from what I've heard, people with the manual are really happy with it. They also get to enjoy a lot less complication and electronics coupled with an NA 4 cylinder. This just goes to show that turbos in small cars are pointless, this thing gets like 40 plus MPG

I own the a 2017 forte5 with the 1.6t with dct and I still love it. I currently have about 40k miles no complaints. Do wish I had the updated interior but other than that has everything I need. Plus the turbocharged engine makes it fun daily. But interior is outdated and the exhaust is a bit quite but you can fix that yourself ;)

I own a '16 Forte Koup SX and I still enjoy that car as my daily driver. Almost 30k, regular maintenance and no problems thus far. Styling won it for me over similarly priced vehicles. Looked at the ST Fiestas, Civics and Corolla before finally deciding on my 2nd Forte after my first one got trashed in an accident on the interstate.
My 2011 Koup SX had upwards of 60k miles on it, only thing that needed replacement was a transmission temperature sensor around 45k I think.
Will I ever buy another Kia? Probably not, but they are great cars for the money. The two experiences I had purchasing brand new vehicles from Kia was easy from start to finish and I was able to negotiate quite a bit on the sticker price.

New sub here...love the honest in-depth review. I love my KIA Rio 2015 LX+ sedan (Canadian trim) which I bought in its most basic form with a manual 6-speed, 138hp, front heated seats, AC, rear disc brakes, etc. I have racked up more than 70K and it still drive like when it was new...very good room for sub-compact class, nice smooth and peppy GDI engine, fun, fuel efficient, very comfortable, very reliable, and still rattle-free! Very happy with it and have no regrets. I highly recommend it to family and friends and will not hesitate to buy a KIA or a Hyundai automobile again.
