- I'm not sure what I can possible say about this song. It's Bjork's new single "atopos". I think it might be beyond my capabilities to analyse this amazing piece of art properly. What do you think? Can someone please explain to me what's going?!

I believe the staging and costumes are meant to represent mycelium (from which mushrooms are produced), which grows in colonies that can span hundreds (maybe thousands)of miles across the earth . It is believed by some scientists that it is the mycelium that allows trees to communicate certain biological messages to each other...thus creating CONNECTIONS. What a superb piece of art this is!

But the thing is, she knows exactly what she is doing. From every single note to every vocal. She can arrange six clarinets, a choir of 20 people or the sound of feet in the snow.

Love to see people come to bjork with open ears and eyes. Some people say she's "weird for the sake of weird". She's very much not. Her work is complex and heart felt. I agree. There is a great wee documentary on RUclips "Björk: Making of Homogenic". It's a great insight into her process. as she was trying to move from musical influences to creating something completely new and unique.

I've always said Björk is a musician's musician. So much to analyze and discover in her work and it's glorious!
There's a reason Björk's videos have played in museums. Her music is as experimental as it gets among pop artists. There's stuff out there that's more abstract or freeform, but she manages to do it while still writing in catchy hooks and big movements.
If you want something more rainbow flavored Giger-ish, Björk's "tabula rasa" is a trip.

It's funny how I didn't even know The Darkness before watching your videos, and yet I absolutely love your personality and watch pretty much all of your content.
I didn't understand at first. The more I have listened and watched the more I am obsessed. It's amazing!! She is an avante-garde queen. The video is like a fungal rave and I'm IN. It's about focussing on the parts between us as people that make us connect, like a symbiosis. Focussing on perfection from others blocks connection. Etc. That's what I hear. I also hear it in the music, the conflicting sounds highlighting the focus on our differences...but in the final minute it all comes together and 'connects' into the fungal rave. As though the fun is in connection. That's what I see and hear anyway! Also fungi can be both parasitic and can live symbiotically...a visual metaphor for connection/lack of.

For me bjorks music has always been that way, at first i didn't reallt get it therefore i can't really decide wether i like it or not, but the more i listen to it, and the more i slowly begin to understand and process it, and eventually i'd become obsessed with it
funny how when this song was released i hear it and i thought its rubbish, and then i listened 5 more times to it and i think its genius.

I have many friends who are deeply into Björk’s music, but I simply cannot stand it. It’s honestly a shame, since those who enjoy it seem to get so much out of it.

Exactly my experience. I thought the song was really bad when I first heard it but there were small segments I liked. I listened to it again so I could hear those segments again but I started to like the rest of the song and before you know it, I like the whole thing!
I agree! I thought the instrumentation sounded like a middle school band warming up at first listen. But it's really quite beautiful! Bjork stealing my heart yet again.

I met Bjork whilst having the privelege to screen the music vid in 3D for "wanderlust" at MoMA in NYC. What an absolute delight and down to earth she was, ill never forget that!
Finally we have some bass clarinet representation in mainstream music! I find it particularly hard to play mine with any distractions, you have to keep the embouchure tight and you can't even smirk. Notice the double tonguing later in the song, so sexy 🤟

Her late 90's/early 00's output is still my favourite Björk era, but I will always appreciate everything she does, no matter how artistically out there. One of the best to ever do it.
How Bjork can create that kind of song is mind blowing to me. What kind of music or art does she listen to get inspiration to write that kind of song.
Gentle Giant / Caravan, various folk musicians, jazz artists, indigenous / Nordic folk music perhaps, Frank Zappa, Kate Bush, perhaps some cool electronic artists like Orb, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, classical composers both historic and modern I imagine, Sakamoto and Japanese pop might also be a great call....just guessing Bjork maybe likes some of the above at least and lots more I cannot guess either...but good question ☺️

If you listen to Alban Berg’s influential opera ‘Lulu’ from the 1930s, you’ll hear a lot of similarities in harmony and in the very direct use of voice and instruments. Bjork has arrived at her own harmonic landscape by very different means, but she’s in great company. As for the visuals, this is not so strange if you’ve spent time looking at contemporary dance and costume design. Remember those wild costumes that were made for Bowie by a Japanese designer in the early 70s?

For me this song is a desperate cry to just be open to life, nature and each other. To stop hiding, to stop fighting, and to start listening and understanding.

She is beyond classification. Her songs and videos either give me flashbacks or make me think very deeply. Such an immersive experience.
Bjork usually sings in Lydian. The sharp 4 is her go to.

This is not all that true. She has used a wide range of modalities in her music. Even “Possibly Maybe” goes from Lydian to melodic minor and back. She does like Lydian & modal suspensions though, as well as emphasis of the upper so-called phantom note (sharpening leading note), which is the #4 in Lydian… “Jóga” uses Phrygian in the verse and Aeolian harmony under major melodies in the chorus. “Bachelorette” uses suspended harmonic movement in a harmonic minor context. “Big Time Sensuality” is in Mixolydian. “Stonemilker” has some Lydian flairs, but kind of vacillates between the three major modes on different but very closely related tonal centers. “Crystalline” is in Aeolian, though that upper phantom note is emphasized throughout, and the melody has that wayward feel she loves, with the refrain more final sounding. She often evades the root of the tonic, gallivanting through and/or past it.

I used to listen to the darkness all the time and now when I see my little brother he always plays music by the darkness for me and says remember you used to play this when you would pick me up from school? Not only did I drive him home I introduced him to great music and made great memories.

The techno bits are Bjork’s ode to Gabber. Apparently she binged on it during covid lockdown.
Though I don’t spend a lot of time listening to Bjork, every moment that I do is transfixing, totally absorbing, fascinating. Her composition and her vision are all her own and both are beautiful to me. Add to that a singular quality of voice. Her pitch is literally perfect whenever she wants, and in the most challenging phrases.
Anybody in the comments seen Bjork perform live? I have and it was in the mid 90s so quite early in her career. She was amazing and I would love to see her again.
I saw her in 2019 at The Shed in New York. I was incredibly lucky as I found out about the concert early enough to find affordable tix. It was not my favorite album and instrumentation from her, but the show was still breathtaking, especially "Future Forever" with the choir. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to her "Orkestral" show, I only watched the stream but that totally knocked my socks off, listening to "Aurora" with an orchestra❤

I absolutely bloody love this piece of art. Like you the imagery reminds me of fungal systems but also undersea environments.
I found that the sound is reminiscent of the sea, lots of different signatures, moments of silence and deep violent crashing.
Truly deep on a lot of different levels, it’s wonderful.
I love Bjork, everything she does is just so mental and so experimental and, as you say, challenging! Bloody genius.

BREAKING NEWS: The Clariboephone Mushroom Sextet have just signed a multi-million pound deal with Columbia Records and have binned Bjork off, meaning that her touring plans have gone right down the pan. Their debut album is expected to be released around June 2023.

Björk is known for creating concept albums, and in this case it’s mushrooms and their whole universe (funghi world). And she wants to emulate the plants sound.
The lyrics are based in roland Barthes the other, atopy (at hoops by aristotles), connection and communications theory (post estructuralismo). Kasimyn from modus operandi is a flaming soul from Asia, a leading Indonesian duo. The weird mushroom people playing instruments are a bass clarinet sextet from Iceland and horrible pants choices.
The lettuce in her face is used to represent funghi too, the under part of it, and her neck piece, made by her 10 years collaborator James T merry is too. They’re all using wigs from tomihiro kono’s 2021-22 collection. The weird nails were made by sojin oh, and these are useless data because they have nothing to do with the music but that are relevant to me, because of the concept she works with in every record.
She has another single out, ovule, where the song is somehow similar, strong bear (this are not only Inspired by Latin reggaetton rhythms like her collaboration with Arca (she’s venezuelan, now thaaaaats weird, check it out) but on Indonesian beats and rhythms, that gabber modus operandi kasimyn brings to the mix. So they’re all intertwined.
She has been releasing a podcast, sonic symbolism, where she talks in depth and extensively about her records, and the motivations behind them. They’re 10, so there’s a lot to hear.
As a lifelong fan (1996, duuuuude!!! I was the first woman to get into the musicology and composition major in the best Chile university, because I wanted to do that and be as free from my previous classical training as I can be) listening to her talking about all these amazing records and how they evolved until this weird pants smurf bass clarinet players, lettuce face, unsettling rings and dissonance. I highly recommend to listen to them if you want to understand or dive deeper into her marvelous brain.

I love Bjork. When she appeared with the Sugarcubes there was something uniquely different about her. Some times her music can be a bit too dark yet others have a level of joy that is very special. Her voice live is really something else. Can't recommend seeing her live enough, the production quality she delivers is always killer. I can understand though why some people would find her just confusing.
She's an aquired taste - we'll leave it at that!

I didn't want to go to her concert in 2003 but my friends were all going. ended up being top of my all time list of live shows. she has to be seen live if you like live music. it's something special.

Tho, tbh....her later stuff IS harder to get into. The sweet spot for me is Homogenic, Vespertine, and Medulla. Those albums...her 3rd, 4th, and 5th are back to back brilliant. Honestly, all her stuff is amazing. But a lot of the newer stuff takes time to get. And even then....much of it I just cannot get into. As creatively wild as her music always is....I do also miss the songwriting craft and succinct purposefulness of her older material.
This latest album by Björk is fantastic. The ode to her mother is emotional and awe-inspiring. Björk has my greatest respect for continuing to push what is musically acceptable while remaining somewhat mainstream. I cannot think of anyone as famous as her that has managed to remain so experimental.
She has definitely remained experimental but for me who loved her albums up to and including Medulla, her music is just too esoteric for me now. I admire her refusal to ever compromise creativity though :)

Loved Bjork’s first 3 Albums but as each new one passes they remain more difficult to listen too. Still an absolute legend 🇮🇸❤️
Bjork has really embraced atonal chanty and slightly chaotic music for a few albums now. I love the experimental nature - as well as the bass clarinet textures throughout - but the one slight disappointment is that her vocal chants have become quite samey from album to album, often confined to three notes and very typical inverval jumps (as you pointed out early on in the video). It's not that I want her necessarily to re-embrace vocal melody - I'd just like to hear some different intervals and notes once in a while.
That's where I'm at regarding the vocals and it's partially why I haven't really connected to her last few albums.
I love the new Bjork song too! Your analysis of it was great and really made me chuckle 😆. Something about "hybrid wind music" really REALLY made me giggle - it's an accurate way to describe it but hearing those words together sounded absurd! Ahh she's one of a kind our Bjork xx
