I find it difficult to understand why the downed aircraft and the assassinations on UK soil and others are so rarely mentioned. There was so much leading up to the Special Military Operation that seems to get swept under the carpet, I’m assuming it’s because of government failures to nip problems in the bud for which the world is beginning to pay the price.
Nice talk. That there are so many Moscovian bots/trolls here spouting the usual stupid propaganda points shows how important this point is.
@whattalks
Don't be so quick to gaslight. Many people just want the war to end. There are no winners with nuclear war. This is a fact, but someone is going to make a mistake. Mark my words. And whether you are on the left and I am on the right or vice verse, it won't matter. That's the point.
Extremely well argued and articulated , Prof. I'm regularly puzzled by the lack of understanding how letting Ukraine fall will turn into a spiralling vortex military aggression across the planet. We learn nothing from history...

Saw this comment from a British guy on Reddit
"We had peace in Europe because the nahtzees were fully defeated. It took 6 years of determination and patience to win that war. For most of those 6 years, the nahtzees were unstoppable. Their army pushed our troops out of France, and we were bombed for years. We won by staying strong and being patient.
I think those calling for peace today would have surrendered or "made a deal" with the nahtzees in the 1940s. You're just afraid and seeking the easiest, most cowardly option. We need to stand strong with Ukraine. What Putin has done in Ukraine is the most evil thing any European leader has done in the 21st century."
Why don't you change the tape it not 1940 anymore.. the strategies back then only a fool will believe it will work today
To imagine that Putin's motivations and ambitions are analogous to Hitler's in 1939 is to be victim of simplistic and unsophisticated propaganda yourself.
@stevepi1
How can Europe achieve long-term peace if Russia doesn't accept that its invasion was an extreme and unjustified escalation?
if Ukraine were Britain in 1940, they would have called up ALL men over the age of 18 immediately and not just guys of 25+, also they would not have let tens of 1000s of fit young men flee the country as "refugees" to let other folks fight for their motherland.

Many people think that Putin's intention is to flatten Ukraine and take it over completely. After all, it is what we would do. It wants to keep Crimea because of its strategic value and is not happy with it falling into the hands of its arch enemy, NATO.

one thing of significance Russia has antipropaganda laws , which means the media and government are not allowed to tell lies it is in Russian law,
Also President Putin has said a few days ago,
Russia will mirror what the UK and USA does with escalations and of course if the RAF are firing storm shadow missiles into Russia that will cause reactions from Russia
It's usa and pentagon lies that created this ukraine war
Western main stream media is the ones that tell lies and spread disinformation

@@Lessons4Life Either way, Russia is immorally in Ukraine with no reasonable excuses. Whataboutism is irrelevant to this
What an absolutely daft comment, which reeks of false equivalence, deflection and ignorance.
This kind of comment is typical of Putin apologists who wants to justify his lies. The 'facts' (which probably don't matter to whoever wrote this piece of garbage), are that Putin is a tyrannical leader to the oppressed Russian people, and a despot who sent his brutal army to invade another country, killing thousands of innocent men, woman and children - and without any mercy. He is also threatening nuclear armageddon on those who are trying to stop his murderous invasion.
There is nothing that Ukraine or The West has done in this conflict to Russia that amounts to even a 'thimble full' by way of comparison to justify anything that the murderer Putin has said or done.
Sadly, this is the world we live in - one in which people think it's OK for Putin to do whatever he wants, because everyone else is just as bad. - because to them, warped narratives are more important than facts.

You are right to raise this as a very serious issue. Russia has interfered in elections in the UK, around Europe and in the USA; where they must be as happy with the recent election result as they were with Brexit. We used to have a government that turned a blind eye to Russian interference; this one can only be better.
Unlike the ‘west’ who have partaken in the overthrow of governments around the world to suit their own interests.

Forget about the 'greatest weapon' - the ONLY weapon this desperate obsessive has is his anti-Russian propaganda, and as I've already said it is ineluctably destroying him. How else would someone be willingly prepared to cast aside all self-respect in order to debase and soil themselves by disseminating information that has no corroboration whatsoever other than hearsay, which as we all know is not permissible in a court of law. So, e.g., he'll spew forth about Russia using 'meat-grinder' tactics, when there is not one minute of footage, nor one single photograph, of these putative tactics in action. He'll prattle on about how egregious and 'uncivilized' it was for Russia to violate a treaty, and yet remain totally silent about the West's violation of the Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 Treaties - as though breaking a treaty only matters when the other side does it. This gross and despicable unfairness and unbalance characterizes every single PROPAGANDA pronouncement he ever makes about Russia, distorting situations and events to such an extent that it amounts to a Grand Guignol perversion of the truth. This reckless abandonment of fidelity to fairness and truth amounts to nothing other than HUBRIS. The countermeasure to propaganda is education and free speech with a free press. We have that. The only thing we are getting wrong is that the military budget in the West is insufficient for the current state of the world. Also many of the leaders are not suitable for the situation (Biden/Starmer/Scholz).
That's not a left/right wing political thing, there are plenty of left wing politicians who are up to the task. It's the difference between "hope for the best" and "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst"...
I’m not sure we’re getting education and speech right though. Allowing a handful of right wing billionaires to control our social media networks and in Twitters case, leverage that control to elect their preferred oligarch isn’t indicative of an environment of free speech but one of controlled and influenced speech.
We are now primed to fall for Russian propaganda if these billionaires deem it in their personal financial interests. This is not something that can be fixed by teaching kids media literacy; we all need to learn these lessons.

Britain is not invading a country right now, so your comment here is worthless and non-constructive.
Hello botsky
@@Tayletubby "Britain is not invading a country right now" I think you will find that a good many Brits are "helping" in Ukraine as we speak. Many of the weapons sent from the UK need skilled operators and where might those be found?
How are the targets identified? Does Ukraine have its own satellites?
Does it have the number of skilled operatives required to transport, install, target and launch those missile systems.
And that is not counting the other observers, aides, trainers and mercenaries. Basically, the UK is doing everything it can in this battle except actually pulling the trigger - and I am not even sure about that!
The Russians should leave propaganda to the British, they have a great tradition from the Great Game, Menzies to now. There is a desperate need to imagine and project an evil empire which justifies the own ambitions, the own hideous acts.
Never before have we witnessed such a unified approach to influence the public mind in the west. And you can clearly see the British signature, the sexing up of the narrative.
Outside social media, there is no dissenting voice, no access to other information, to background stories, to facts. Instead, we have rumours, libels and dreams spread on all channels.

The USSR had a 50 megaton nuclear bomb back in 1961. They have had "wunder-waffen" for some decades now.
But Putin is quite correct. The present county of Ukraine is simply the territory of the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine - which was a country in name only, but in fact a construct of the Bolsheviks and later of Krushchev, who added Crimea in 1954. It was an administrative unit of the Soviet Union, largely controlled by Russia and those parts appended to it have little or no historical, linguistic or cultural connection with any place called "Ukraine", which is itself an ambiguous term covering a wide spectrum of varying territories in the region.
The fact that the parts added by the Soviets are exceptionally rich in mineral wealth is the key to this issue. They have been invested in by Russia, and worked by Russian labour for centuries and I personally can fully understand Russian objections to having them spirited away by a process of treaties and agreements signed by the government in Kiev.
