Modular Frozen Scatter Terrain

- In this video I make a full table's worth of scatter terrain to match the Runic Frozen Monument made earlier.

I love snowy terrains! there's this one channel i used to watch, bard's craft, and he mixed up his own snow with baking soda and pva glue I think, and added white paint (b/c the baking soda will yellow over time). this is what he used for snow. he doesn't make videos anymore, but he got really good results with those cheap materials.

for cheap snow you have a few options.
you need a fine powder (Bicarb/Baking Powder/Fine sand/crushed glass), a thin glue (PVA/Modpodge) and white paint.
just mix them together, and then apply.... you will have play around with the mix depending on what you use but its pretty close to a 1:1:1 ratio.

Lovely foam boulders! Will have to give it a try sometime.
For a snow recipe I've always used a roughly equal mixture of:
-thick PVA glue
-White acrylic paint
-Wall repair spackle (the crumbly foamy stuff, Selley's is the brand I use here in Aus)
-(optional) white snow flock or crushed glass for extra texture.
I find you can just adjust the ratio until you get something pretty close to GW's technical paint, and an order of magnitude cheaper!

Looks great, wonderful job, snow mix I've been using based on someone who had posted this with trying to solve issues with PVA & Baking soda.
1. Vallejo Still Water
2. Woodland Scenics Snow (Soft Flake)
3. Bottle of sparkly glitter
4. Brush to mix the snow and apply it to the scenery
*Note: use a clean new brush, do not use a bruch that has been used for paint.
Toss in snow into a tub.(amount depends on how much you need).Squirt in the gitter.Squirt in the Vallejo still water (Small amounts) and mix. Use small amounts to reach the consistency you want. A bit on the thicker side and you will have thickly packed snow. A bit on the runny side and you will have melting snow. If it’s hard to apply because it’s too thick, then add some more Still Water.
wait at least 24 hours to let it dry well.

My favorite snow recipe is 1:1:1 (these are variable depending on the consistency you want) of white paint, baking soda and white school glue (or mod podge). If you want it to have that untouched look you can add white or silver glitter (I would recommend as fine of glitter as you can find.

Want an inexpensive material trick for summer and winter terrain??? = Sawdust!!!
Add pva glue to sawdust and green paint for moss and summer flocking, white paint for snow and water ripple effects!
Also... take all your small off-cuts of xpf foam and put in an inexpensive coffee grinder. (WEAR A MASK making and applying!) and grind the foam into powder... add pva glue and wah-la... snow and moss flocking effects again with the white and green paints.

I've experimented with a few different snow formulas.
Miniac has a specific video that compares a dozen of them and uses different combinations for ice VS fresh snow VS packed snow VS slush etc

you can get super fine white craft sand at most craft stores. It makes awesome snow and costs a lot less than specialty paints or paint effects.

I was at Lowes today and they had the "Faux Snow" spray paint on clearence. I was tempted to pick it up and try it for artic terrain.

Oddly , my older kids watched a Christmas themed Critical Role , and they think we should do short Holiday Module next year so , we watched this , made some drawings, got the calendar out and marked July 12 to 20th to craft it all. Thank you.

Nice build. I have some super fine crafting sand (its white) that might work as snow - I am not sure where I got it, but it as fine as salt.

White tile grout works great and it's cheap.
I like cheap.
My favorite black wash recipe to date is 10-1 Windex to black paint
I love the simplicity
@@brokenterrain mix it 60 Windex and 40 craft paint for a cheap airbrush paint (just don't use apple barrel cuz the pigment grind is too thick to go through an airbrush. Folk art is best)
Try baking soda and shaving cream. 1 to 1 and mix well. More of one or the other will make the snow heavier or lighter depending on your needs.

It's close. Hopefully soon I can get a current copy printed out for you. I had one, made by a player for me, but one of the other players wanted it. So I let him have it.
I bought some "snow white nail glitter" off of ebay like 10 years ago
It being the "snow white" variant and not just regular white is important. Also its important you get the nail art grade glitter. Normal hobby crafting glitter is garbage compared to the nail art stuff. But for a pricetag of like 10-15£ you will be set for life so its worth it.
Now when I want to snow up a piece I finish it up regularily until the normal flocking stage at this point i put white wall filler anywhere I want snow watered down slightly and build it up to thick snowdrifts.
Let it dfy and give all of it a coat of pva and springle on the glitter. Go ham here any glitter that winds up on other stuff than the white plaster will in the end look like dirty melted snow (ie: the brown dirt road becomes a dirty winter mud/sludge "wet socks and frozen toes hellpit")
At this point you should have a snow effect that looks more realistic than anything Ive ever seen done with any other mixtures/recipes. It even shimmers like real snow. I like to knock back the shimmer abit with rattlecan matte varnish but thats a matter of preference.

Great video!! I feel the green foam at Lowes is too resilient and does not take texture well. The pink XPS from Home Depot is a better product, for what we do, in my opinion. Happy Holidays!

Paint the bricks first, after drying pile all and randomly draw when you glue them.
I recognize that is probably the superior way to do the bricks, but it also creates more work. I already struggle to produce a video a week. Generally I'm looking for techniques to speed the process up. Thank you for checking out the video. 😁👍

I believe there ARE cheaper alternatives to Valhallan Blizzard... as I recall, AK Interactive makes a variety of texture-pastes in large and more cost-effective tubs. Not that I don't like Valhallan Blizzard... I still wanna pick up some Astrogranite and Astrogranite Debris to go with the Martian Ironearth I've been using to zhuzh-up Figma bases. And of course some Mordant Earth to make lava-field bases.
I've seen some videos with AK interactive. Looks like some quality stuff.
@@brokenterrain There's also snow-granules from Woodland Scenics that come in one of those big shaker-tubs... which not only can be mixed with Mod Podge to create your own Valhallan Blizzard, but can also be sprinkled over top to simulate fresh powder-snow!
