Michael Angelis was perfect as 'Arry in his debut episode. He really sold the sadistic and cunning persona very well with the deep, raspy, and almost hushed voice. Genuinely, Stepney Gets Lost is a top tier ep for me because of Angelis's narration playing into the undertones of "Some people are sick in the head and will purposefully try to harm you." On this, Ringo Starr's Diesel is comparably perfect as well, really captures his manipulative and sly nature. Starr and Angelis were simply amazing storytellers who proved that a good narration can greatly enhance a story and its characters.
It’s strange how they were portrayed as Burke and Blair bad guys in their debut episode, but since season six onwards they got scaled down to being just your average playground bully’s.
I’ve the same idea, because many Thomas’s fandom have the theory that the script of Stepney lost is reused of one of the others 83 last scripts of tugs, and arry and Bert are the devious scrapyard diesels, like burk and Blair, they must wanted to pick up o.j for make him scrap, very similar like Arry and Bert with de steam engines; Arry and Bert watch the steam engines like old useless, and in the same way, want to make them scrap, very similar to burk and Blair
I have a Theory that Sir Topham Hatt found out what Arry and Bert did and threatened to send them away if they ever did something like that again , hence why they were toned down after Stepney Gets lost , plus Diesel needs Friends too
I personally think Arry and Bert should have stayed the way we saw in Stepney gets lost. Only because they seemed the most threatening characters in all of Thomas up to that point it felt like they could actually harm the steam engines. However I still like it when they show up in the show.
'Arry and Bert are my favorite antagonists, too. You have a very good point on them. And by the way, I prefer them as both villains and bullies at the same time.
I love the fact that these guys have a job most analogous to a hitman, murdering engines and taking joy in it, and yet they still adore the cute duckies to the bottom of their metaphorical hearts
My take on Arry and Bert, is that they’re both diesel shunters in the Vicarstown yard, where Stepney had been idling in. One unexpected night, Stepney was saved by Rusty and steamed joyfully away the yard, not realising the Arry and Bert were watching the whole thing. So, the twin menace sneaked into the Fat controller’s railway. They tried to seek a way to capture Stepney. Eventually, Stepney was caught by Arry and Bert. They keen to send Stepney in a fireplace with the crane for ‘punishment’. Of course, everything ended well after TFC rescue
i’m willing to make a case the two aren’t TOO out of their original character in Middle Engine. If anything, I think it gave them more menace. 1. they’re out of the scrapyards, and 2. it’s broad daylight, they can’t exactly try to murder an engine in that scenario like with Stepney or (maybe) Fergus. So it makes sense their threating sides are toned down a peg, but still, they did/could’ve done serious damage to percy with what happened, causing “confusion and delay” to his order, so to phrase. And who’s gonna blame the shunting diesel who was just supposedly doing his job? I also like how sleazy they’re portrayed, while still keeping the dynamic. In Stepney Gets Lost the dialogue for Arry is kinda generic, ngl. In Middle Engine, he speaks much more gangster like, like a mafia member. Bert, too, him remaining the silent stooge to Arry’s talkative self, other than an occasional agreement or acknowledgement. I get WHY people think they’re out of character in that episode, Season 8- did them real dirty basically casting them as Diesel’s entourage, but imo, they’re actually pretty good in Middle Engine other than the “Lil Green Piggy” line
Very cool video! I've see Arry and Bert Bachmann (OO scale) models featured off and on in Walthers Flyers and on various online hobby stores. I thought about getting them at one time but ultimately passed on them for the time being. Maybe one day they'll get added to the Thomas portion of my train collection, we'll see! By the way, love the Adult Swim style intro!
You ever realize how much legal trouble ‘Arry and Bert, and the ironworks in general, could have been in? The bluebell branch line (it’s a pure TVs episode so I’m going with that rn) could have easily filed charges.
Hi train boy i loved your video of Arry & Bert. Maybe you can do Neville, Molly or Caroline or fearless Freddie or mighty Mac or Rocky or Dennis. Anyway keep up the good work!
honestly we both prefer the way thomas used to mean to us older fans but people these days doesn't know how much he meant to us personally I always love how we had steamies & diesels go against each other that's how it should be but it will never be the same again since mattel ruined it by replacing it with all engines go
Wow, this is a GOOD vid. Gotta huge geek-out rant to say in repsonse to this. (Thank god this isnt marked under YTkids) I knew, i KNEW there was something different about their vibes in the later episodes. Even as a kid. I gotta admit, in their single debut episode, they scared me alot more then Diesel 10 did in TATMR. No kidding, just the way they were..... PRESENTED. (As a kid i always got a good thrill out of the scarier episodes) How they rolled out of the shadows at night, the red lights reflecting off them, and the fact that they're the Grim Reaper Duo of that episode. And don't get me started on the British voice narrator did Arry in that episode. He had this low raspy, sadistic ,unsettling voice that sounded like a sociopathic serial killer. They're paint coats were also alot more dull, dirtier and dusty compared to the other characters (which got brightened up later in the series 😒) This makes me hate their redundancy to pathetic bullies so much because the series could've benefited so much having such a dark pair of characters like these. In my opinion they should've been kept in fewer episodes to keep that feeling of mysterious and ominous but have them avaliable in the darker episodes. I also wish the creators kept splatter and dodge around and have THEM take the role of "annoying bully duo" and keep Arry and Bert as the Grim Messengers of Doom
I sometimes wonder what happened between Season 5 & 6 of the show because I feel like they had potential as actual villains, but they were downgrade to typical bullies.
@@ItsTrainBoy You are so welcome and so awesome for making our childhood show still so special! :D p.s I Wish you to be well soon because lately you said that you got the covid :3
The Unlucky Tug once stated in his Season 6 retrospective that in his opinion Arry and Bert should’ve appeared in Season 5 once, nameless, and never be seen again. It would’ve made them more memorable and impactful that way.
I disagree personally haha; to each their own though! :) I think only appearing a single time and being nameless wouldn’t necessarily make them more impactful, but I do think they could’ve been much more so with some simple tweaking to the characters and how they were used.
Can you do an analysis of Salty, Paxton, Emily, Arthur and Jack and the Pack. Anyway, I really like when Arry and Bert are asses to the engines but I do love how they get their karma in the end. (Well most of the time.)
Was it ever specified as to why Henry states that Arry and Bert need special fuel in that one episode? It had never been mentioned before, or since for that matter. (And yes, that was in the Sharon Miller era, which completely disregarded the fact that Henry doesn't need special coal).
The chads Splatter and Dodge >>> the virgins Arry and Bert Splodge should’ve stuck around after TATMR. Better to leave Arry and Bert as monsters who only appeared once than let them degrade into D-list jokes.
A point I could rock with tbh 🤔🤔 Leaving them as the more grim *doom* bringers feels more Arry & Bert anyways, Splodge could’ve easily taken the mantle of just being “a bother to steam engines”
There will soon!! The little booger still needs the lining and I’m losing hope on the ones I ordered- 💀 May have to get crafty with the finish of him haha

That actually makes sense.
I personally think Arry and Bert should have stayed the way we saw in Stepney gets lost. Only because they seemed the most threatening characters in all of Thomas up to that point it felt like they could actually harm the steam engines. However I still like it when they show up in the show.
Me too, they should even do it in CGI too.
'Arry and Bert are my favorite antagonists, too. You have a very good point on them. And by the way, I prefer them as both villains and bullies at the same time.

I wish they kept their 'Grim messagers of doom' personas and not just toned down to generic bully characters.
That would be great, especially for CGI.
Excellent work! Very underrated (and under utilized) characters!
These guys have a insane (almost) kill count
Have you done a history on any GCI series characters like Ryan, Stafford or Stephen? That would be quite nice.
I wished they kept they're grim messengers trait, they could have worked as recurring villains, kind of like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons.
Me too, even in CGI.
Arry and bert: Rakes our old arch enemy
Stepney: I thought I was your arch enemy
Arry and Bert: We have a life outside of you Stepney
I can tell this video is gonna be great, I haven't even got past the intro! 😂
Shoot my homie I hope so!! 😅
I hope you have a great rest of your day too :)
Thanks man :D

i suspect the reason why they are seen at the mines is because they are collecting iron ore trains to take to the smelters
Arry & Bert seem like they would be the ones to team up with Diesel 10 more than Splatter & Dodge would
Yep.
I know, right?

I love how others buy Thomas toys for a collection instead of playing with them
This is still some of the best content in the fandom 🔥
Hi train boy i loved your video of Arry & Bert. Maybe you can do Neville, Molly or Caroline or fearless Freddie or mighty Mac or Rocky or Dennis. Anyway keep up the good work!
Maybe have a video talking about the 1 time model engines, like Dennis, Neville, Flora, Hank etc

Tbh I wish we got more Arry’ and Bert’ in the classic series 🤷♂️
They had a couple of recurring appearances.

Type B for Trainboy to do Bash, Dash and Ferdinand next see how that one goes
Great story about Arry and Bert
Story of SC Ruffey but instead it’s actually the story of Hector
Maybe you can do a video on the characters only featured in one episode like Neville, Hank, and Flora.
fun fact:some of Arry and Bert’s merchandise calls them”iron Arry”and”iron Bert”.
My 2 favorite characters
I sometimes wonder what happened between Season 5 & 6 of the show because I feel like they had potential as actual villains, but they were downgrade to typical bullies.
That was very interesting to hear :)
Thank you so much homie :)❤️🔥

now i am curious, what do you think Diesel Ten's backstory is? i have a neat theory myself on his origin. as i too like the villains
I like that music the beginning
You could easily done some form of Super Rescue with these two...
There was one, when Henry rescued the two diesels in Henry’s Happy Coal.

Analysis on boco. We need it.
You should do Norman, Sidney and Paxton
Awesome video trainboy
ooo this vid is gonna be amazing!
why didn’t magic railroad just use arry and bert themselves instead of repainting them?
The Ironwork Diesels moods soon changed when the ducklings were seen

@@ItsTrainBoy A perfect compromise between having 'Arry, Bert, Splatter and Dodge appearing more in the show with their own roles.
I guess it depends on whether or not there would have been enough money or material to make separate models for them.
If you're reading this you must go watch a dark night for Bert Thomas fan animation it is really good and make me actually care about bert
A love it man ❤❤❤😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉🎉
You should speedrun Neville's entire character
Arry and Bert resemble bumblebees
you should go over percy
Is there gonna be another episode of “From Shotty to Awdry?”
There will soon!! The little booger still needs the lining and I’m losing hope on the ones I ordered- 💀
May have to get crafty with the finish of him haha

What do you use for your intro music? and could you make another music to model to video?
Zak and Zebedee as Diesel engines
Can you do Diesel 10 plz he is just the coolest villain in the Thomas universe ever I'm my opinion at least
