Honestly, I thought this was an absolutely beautiful story... The intense love death has for his brother, War, in going to the ends of the universe to save his soul was almost enough to make me weep... as powerful as he is, Death, himself is just a pawn in the larger scheme of things, but sacrifices himself to save humanity

Meanwhile games like The Last of Us and GTA V are already aging badly, even their remastered versions. This artstyle wasn't cheap, but just as you say, it's timeless.

Jelo Mercado I was thrown off by him being in round 100. I went in blind hoping to get the plat with two health bottles left. I killed him with literally 2 health left. I almost raged
What? No it's not. I just platinumed Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition and Absalom absolutely reckted me on Deathinitive difficulty. I was raging that it literally took me 15+ tries and completely changing my build to scrape out a victory. Samael was like 1 try on the same difficulty. And then he's in the crucible, but for my own peace of mind I'm not gunna talk about it. Lol..
It took me all this time to finally see what Samael is truly after. Yes, he wants to be leader of the demons. He wants to bring chaos to people. But I think he actually does believe in a balance. I don't think he fears humanity and wishes to see them thrive to be a society that can stand up to both demons and angels alike. He always is going on about a good show. He also wants a world without the charred council. Where the horseman don't answer to them, and do what's right for the balance. They're constantly growing, learning, becoming better, and look at their stories so far. Even War is changing. Let them be the chaotic neutral of all worlds. Otherwise Samael wouldn't have made so many alliances with all 4 and helped them out in some way that doesn't just help him too (he did a bit of both).
I think he wants a final showdown. but he's very calculating as he knows who to make allies with and who to pick a fight with. He might be the wisest character in the DS universe
Samael? Please with his cunning nature i bet he does have certain codes to himself in life but i doubt its about wanting and respecting the balance from what i can see when he was powerful enough to challenge lucifer he either wants to find more power to actually match him due to some unique power he has difficulty in defeating or didnt wanna bother with too much interference from other forces like heaven and the charred council if he were to reign his long lived nature and life span just gives him time to secretly plant seeds that shall bare fruit and i bet he'd prefer to be a shadow ruler hidden regardless of being the most powerful archdemon unless he didnt have a choice but to directly confront his enemies.
I think he enjoys conflict. He has certain codes of conduct, considering how he ended up in Darksiders 1. Though what exactly his line is remains unknown. He says he dislikes the company Lucifer keeps, referencing Abaddon, so I assume it’s something about Abaddon in particular he despises, something enough to have him finally split from Hell’s hierarchy. Though what that is is speculative. It could be the fact that Abaddon is an Angel, or a Fallen Angel. The former I don’t know about since he doesn’t seem to bear any especial malice toward them or those who associate with them. The latter seems to be the only one of his sort so that’s unknown. My personal speculation though is this: I can assume that he knows that Abaddon was the one who pushed for the plan that broke the pact, he seems to be one of the most informed creatures in the entirety of Darksiders. He’s capable of viewing distant events and discerning time travel so it’s possible that he has a certain ability to observe across time and space. It seems he reserves his contempt for Abaddon, Ulthane and Azrael following his lead making him the ringleader and in his eyes the one most worth his contempt which makes a bit more sense since it seems that Samael’s big line is holding up one’s end of a deal. Given that Abaddon was the one to break that pact. But ultimately he seems to enjoy setting up powerful figures to collide and seeing what happens.
My fav War quote is: - maybe we could make a deal horseman - "You won't like my terms" And now I have a fav Death quote too: - no1 knows you're here - "not a soul. Now hand over the key. It can be our little secret"
Omnipotent? No. 3rd most powerful being in the DS universe? Yes. Omniscient? No. Knows more than you can even conceive of? Yes. Remember that Samael is a 4-dimensional being. He is very powerful and knows things that a human mind in the DS universe could never even comprehend. But he is not The Creator, which is the DS version of God
This is a minor detail that I catch during the battle with the Lord of the Black Stone: In Darksiders, Samael almost always in crouching position while he was talking with War. Perhaps analogous to his status as depowered. While here in Darksiders II, Samael almost always standing straight while speaking with Death, signify him in all his glory. Or perhaps War is just short :D
Tahja Tomlinson oh, i remember that, in the first lvl of darksiders 2, the first boss is a black 'war, and he was taller then death, by a little bit, so i thought his real self was that tall.
Simple. Samael was chained and bound in Darksiders 1, that's why he was bent on one knee the whole time, possibly a form of humiliation put upon him by the Destroyer. Can't believe none of the rest of you remembered this.
Fucking hell this game was a masterpiece from all aspects! The voice acting, animation, set design, combat, sound design, world design, writing, and Jesper Kyd's Music man! SO GOOD!
Samael is my favorite character in this series. His bulky physique with the big ass meaty wings, the way he talks and laughs during battle, his heavy attacks, everything about him makes you think he really is as powerful as he claims to be and just playing around. He better be in Darksiders 3 Nordic!
Before I say my comment. Darksiders 2 has to be one of the most under rated games I have ever played. This games should get a 10 but granted they are bugs and glitches but over all. it is amazing. I was going to say doesn't Samael look a little like DARKNESS from the movie LEGEND. For you young guys here it is a very old movie with Tom Cruise. Still a classic for me.

All of you busy arguing about who is stronger is silly. How come none of you are questioning why Samael knows that Death is from the future and is on an unsanctioned journey? This is a far more intriguing argument to have than the brain dead "who is stronger than who" crap going on in these comments.
Also why Samael first thought the horsemen were sent for him. Why would a horseman come for Samael if not for something he had done (or since he knows death is from the future) something he is planning to do.
Death is the leader of the four horseman in the darksiders story. He is the oldest and the strongest of the four and will go to great lengths to protect is siblings. I don’t know why people argue about who is stronger when there is such a clear cut winner on who is stronger.
People don't understand this is a fully powered Samael and death still has powers bound by the seals of the council. And if death went reaper form samael would be toast.

Death could have easily killed Samael if he so wanted to by going into reaper form. Cause once in reaper form it is no contest and Samael would automatically lose
Abbadon the Destroyer I'm not so sure. Samael spent the majority of fight sat on his throne, nonchalantly shooting fireballs at Death. That doesn't sound all out to me. Also, take into consideration that this was in the past, and Samael apparently picked a fight with Lucifer between then and the events of 1 and was likely conserving his power for that. And remember that he was rumoured to be almost as powerful as Lucifer, who's lackey (Lilith) had the power to create the Nephilim, and she is far weaker than either of them. So no, I doubt Death would have been able to kill Samael. By the way, the whole Absalom thing you were talking about? Their first fight was 4v1 against Absalom and the second I would see he was actually far weaker. The corruption was more of a corrupting influence that twisted the lands than supercharger for Absalom himself.
Gotta love the way Samael's near-omniscience plays in a the the beginning, as he works out exactly what the circumstances are and corrects his own assumptions. Great way to build the threat, before he even moves.
The funniest part of this fight is that in Judaism Samael is the Archangel of Death... i.e. The Grim Reaper...in other words Death is fighting himself. lol
You know, if Genesis is to be believed. Samael has a sword that he can manifest and use in conjunction with his magic. You know what that means? It means he held back in this fight. We barely cut him and he was holding back, that's just awesome!
You forgot Death's true power is bound and seal by Charred Council. Death doesn't even use his limited Reaper Form nor having an Abyssal Armor during this fight canonically. Both of them fight with their full base power here, and yet Samael clearly exhaust at the end while Death remain the same, like not breaking a sweat at all to him. Truth is, Samael here is in his prime form, fully powered while Death is the one who doesn't even has half of his strength, yet he calmly challenge Samael
On the other hand that power doesn’t come naturally, it is given and revoked. Samael isn’t exhausted, if anything he looks amused. Samael makes it pretty clear that he’s just toying with Death for this bout, stopping only when Death proves capable of scratching him, and that pretty clearly took a lot of doing on Death’s part. He pants twice because he’s just been struck in the face, given his skills as a manipulator and an extremely powerful demon it’s likely been a long time since Samael has had a decent scrap or even felt pain and he takes a second to acclimatise to the sensation. That’s all. While Samael might be at his apex, he’s clearly holding back.
@@rustkarl He was probably holding back a little, but not completely. He was testing to see if Death could beat Corruption, which was a force that was literally ending all of existence. Samael himself couldn't stop it from consuming his kingdom. So in order to see if Death could do what Samael couldn't, he'd have to at least get close to full power during his fight. And Death didn't have his own Harvester, Abyssal Armor, or full power. I think both at their peak, Death still wins.

If you notice, throughout the game Death always asks first for whatever he wants and only really gets snarky and pissed when refused for a stupid reason. Ironic for a guy named Death that killing isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

Acts cool with the Horsemen, cause he knows his own power, but always show them his kind of respect. Personally my favourite character ex aequo with Death.
I agree man, don't get me wrong I didn't forget about Samael even though I didn't mention him. I am really looking forward to the Deathinative edition of the game. I really want a Darksiders 3 sometime in the near future =)
THQ went bankrupt and Nordic games got the rights. I think it's a massive possibility that Darksiders 3 will surface eventually cause the franchise did relatively well. If a game like Shenmue is finally getting another sequel after it actually the first 2 installments being a flop despite the game actually being really good, than things are definitely looking bright for Darksiders cause it was a profitable enough franchise, maybe not to COD standards of profit but it was still profitable cause it is popular enough.
Masterfully done. Samael (apocalyptic) gave me so much trouble that I quit the game for 4 months or so, then came back and beat him out of luck. Great series. Very underrated.

@@SuperSky9 He never told War the true reason for defeating the 4 Chosen Towerguardians.. though he kept his word. War in his stoicism was only focussed on killing the Destroyer. Samael used that naievety to his advantage by sending War on his quest to destroy the Chosen. If War would bring him the 4 Black Hearts of Tiamat, the Griever, the Stygian and Silitha, he would help war get to the Black Tower...and he did! That War restored Samael to his full power, in the process was Samael's true plan. He didnt lie, he omitted that part, as War didnt ask for it ....which ofcourse isnt that much different from lying: he told War the truth.... but ofcourse not the WHOLE truth!... Still Samael kept his word! I'm curious though on when Samael's parting-words to War will fit in; 'We wíll...meet again'....War and Samael have NOT met again, since.
It feels a lot like Avengers infinity war: when Samael touched the scratch on his chin I imagined him saying "All that for a drop of blood." I wonder if it was partially based on this.

Samael is no joke. He’s a force to be reckoned with which is why he is very respected and feared in all realms. Edit: In fact the horsemen were all sent to Samaels castle. But they were instructed not to fight Samael, only to send him a message that the council would like him to eventually take Lucifers place as the leader of hell. Lucifer did not take kindly to this news and has no intention of giving up his position to Samael, one of his arch nemesis. Edit 2: Samael is such a big threat that to enact his plans in the apocalypse, Lucifer plotted against Samael and had him imprisoned. He then separated Samaels powers and placed them into the four chosen to prevent Samaels return. Then while Samael was imprisoned, Lucifer sent forces to destroy Samaels castle and defeat the demons loyal to Samael while it was leaderless destroying it (which is why it’s destroyed in Darksiders 2 and Death has to travel to the past to see Samael). In short, Lucifer made sure to go out of his way to ensure Samael did not meddle in his plans for the apocalypse. If Lucifer sees Samael as this much of a threat, that’s because he is. The four chosen that War kills in the first game were not to protect the iron throne but instead to prevent Samaels return at all cost. Even the fourth chosen, Silithia, told War that Samael would be a threat greater than all the four chosen combined. And they themselves were powerful. Edit 3: In the second game one was also note that Samael has a degree of omnipotence. Only god level beings in the Darksiders universe are able to tap into omnipotence. Samael is a literal menace. Samael also has a large degree of knowledge, having wandered around numerous realms. Samael was famous for watching numerous wars, conflicts and battles unfold (including the Nephilim war. Samael watched the Nephilim get slaughtered in Eden). Samael was nicknamed the red wanderer. And finally Samael is a very ancient demon. He is far older than death, who is very old himself (Death is first generation Nephilim). This means Samael has a lot of years of experience. Thousands of years if not millions.
Samel represents something that few wish to acknowledge about Hell: it is a Meritocracy. Heaven is ruled by "Faith" and politics, while Hell is ruled through power and competence...and fear. Also fear. Point is, Sammy here is a bad guy, but even the bad guy can have good qualities about him.

No, the time gap is too short. Fury's adventure take place after the end of Darksiders 2, where Death has sacrifice his life to restored humanity. Hence why Death is declare "missing" by the Council and there a humans in Darksiders 3
in old ngosticism Samael was reffered to as the angel of death ( also reffered to as death itself, Satan, or the Grim reaper) his wife was also said to be lillith. It's interesting to find games like these holding such lore.

Also lastly he didn't even bother going reaper form so he didn't kill him so he could get the demon key.

Samael at this point had his full power restored, and he was a little tired at the end, although he wasn't going full out as he was testing death. However death at full power with the seventh seal broken is one of the most powerful people in the setting. Behind the Creator (who may or may not be still alive) Lucifer and the charred council. In the lore it is stated that the mightest lords of heaven and demons of hell fear the horsemen. The council gave them a huge amount of power to keep the balance.

Samael. Abaddon sucked it up in the beginning of DS1; he almost got killed by some random lesser demon, had to be rescued by Uriel, and then Straga squished him without any resistance on his part. Samael on the other hand is said to have more raw power than any demon in any realm (according to Lilith anyway).
actual time is. death first went to samael to grab the key before samael ended up in the prison on earth and before he met war. because when war is imprisoned (dead) is the actual time when death is trying to restore humanity. and it is during that time that samael got imprisoned. so death went back in time before the war on earth even began

i think a lot of us can agree that while samael has all his power in this fight, he was merely playing around with death. he wasn't being serious. he be a lot if he went full power serious.
@@altair227 First of all from a gameplay perspective, that was the choice of the player. It has nothing to do with the story. You can activate reaper form yourself during this fight. Second of all, let’s say your right, Death couldn’t use his full power even if he wanted to. This tells me you weren’t paying attention to the story. Death was limited because this mission wasn’t sanctioned therefore he couldn’t use his full power nor could he use his main weapon of choice; his schythes that can transform into any weapon he thinks about. If you read the abomination vault Death even has the power to bring souls back to life as long as they have not been dead for a long time. He has done this to his brother War in the realm/planet of Kothysos. You only saw a fraction of what Death can do in this game. Last but not least, even with the seals broken, and death being able to use his full power, he would not stand a chance against Samael. Samael is equivalent to a god in terms of raw power. Samael even has a degree of omnipotence. Death can only wish to hold that much power. Even with all the horsemen combined at full power and their main weapons in their arsenal, Samael is noted to still be far beyond that. If Samael wanted to he could have ended this fight in less than a second. At full power Death would not have faired much better either. To defeat Samael they are going to have to work together and even then they would have to hope for a miracle. Samael is no regular demon. He is a demon lord for a reason. He’s the second most powerful demon in the Darksiders universe after Lucifer and his raw power even comes close to Lucifers. Samael is one of the most powerful beings in existence in the Darksiders universe. Why do you think Lucifer ordered Samaels capture? Samael was too much of a problem and would have foiled his plans. After Samaels capture, Lucifer sent forces to Samaels castle to destroy it and kill the demons loyal to him which is why Samaels realm is destroyed upon Death visiting it. Death has to travel to the past in order to meet Samael. Lucifer and Samael are arch enemies. In the Darksiders 1 prequel comics, the four horsemen are sent to Samaels castle to send him a message from the council that “Lucifers time is running out and that they wish for Samael to replace him.” Of course Lucifer does not agree with this call and has different plans. During the events of Genesis, Samael was the only demon lord who was not fooled by Lucifer. Nor was he intimidated by Lucifer. Lucifer, being a master manipulator and the prince of hell did not like this at all. From that moment on he always had it out for Samael.
Death is indeed the strongest horseman he is the only being in creation that has stopped Absalom twice and could have defeated samael had he went reaper. And technically he is nigh invulnerable because war impaled him with chaoseater and it had no effect death actually laughed

If you still run into that problem, do this: Right after the little Quick Time Event, don't run back to the platform, but insted jump into the lava. You'll lose a bit of health, but the cutscene will play. This should work, since it works with pretty much everybody.
+Date Masamune Yea that happened to me a couple of times. I take it you mean that he won't summon the arena to him at 3:19 ? If that is the case, just jump into the lava as soon as the little QTE finishes. It solved it for me, and tons of others
Okay so the timeline goes, The entirety of Darksiders Genesis, then the opening of Darksiders 1 up until War is arrested for his supposed crime, Death's journey to restore humanity, aquit War of this "crime", and bring an end to the Nephilim, Death's sacrifice tonrestore humanity, then the entirety of Darksiders 3, and then finally, the rest of Darksiders 1.
Agreed, it took me more time and effort to beat Samael than it did Absalom, and when i saw that Samael only had a small scratch on his cheek after beating him and i realized he was holding back, i wondered how much stronger he'd be if he got serious.
I agree, but when i wrote the comment i hadn't finished the game yet and had only just defeated Samael. Maybe on nightmare it will be a lot harder, because the Uriel and Abbadon fight in Darksider 1 were really great and a lot of fun
Man this fight was such a pain in the ass, Samael constantly falling into the pit of lava and bugging out, I was pretty salty by the time the fight finally didn't glitch, I think I spent 2 hours in it.

It took me all this time to finally see what Samael is truly after. Yes, he wants to be leader of the demons. He wants to bring chaos to people. But I think he actually does believe in a balance. I don't think he fears humanity and wishes to see them thrive to be a society that can stand up to both demons and angels alike. He always is going on about a good show.
He also wants a world without the charred council. Where the horseman don't answer to them, and do what's right for the balance. They're constantly growing, learning, becoming better, and look at their stories so far. Even War is changing. Let them be the chaotic neutral of all worlds. Otherwise Samael wouldn't have made so many alliances with all 4 and helped them out in some way that doesn't just help him too (he did a bit of both).
I think he wants a final showdown. but he's very calculating as he knows who to make allies with and who to pick a fight with. He might be the wisest character in the DS universe

Please with his cunning nature i bet he does have certain codes to himself in life but i doubt its about wanting and respecting the balance from what i can see when he was powerful enough to challenge lucifer he either wants to find more power to actually match him due to some unique power he has difficulty in defeating or didnt wanna bother with too much interference from other forces like heaven and the charred council if he were to reign his long lived nature and life span just gives him time to secretly plant seeds that shall bare fruit and i bet he'd prefer to be a shadow ruler hidden regardless of being the most powerful archdemon unless he didnt have a choice but to directly confront his enemies.

He has certain codes of conduct, considering how he ended up in Darksiders 1.
Though what exactly his line is remains unknown.
He says he dislikes the company Lucifer keeps, referencing Abaddon, so I assume it’s something about Abaddon in particular he despises, something enough to have him finally split from Hell’s hierarchy.
Though what that is is speculative.
It could be the fact that Abaddon is an Angel, or a Fallen Angel. The former I don’t know about since he doesn’t seem to bear any especial malice toward them or those who associate with them.
The latter seems to be the only one of his sort so that’s unknown.
My personal speculation though is this:
I can assume that he knows that Abaddon was the one who pushed for the plan that broke the pact, he seems to be one of the most informed creatures in the entirety of Darksiders. He’s capable of viewing distant events and discerning time travel so it’s possible that he has a certain ability to observe across time and space.
It seems he reserves his contempt for Abaddon, Ulthane and Azrael following his lead making him the ringleader and in his eyes the one most worth his contempt which makes a bit more sense since it seems that Samael’s big line is holding up one’s end of a deal.
Given that Abaddon was the one to break that pact.
But ultimately he seems to enjoy setting up powerful figures to collide and seeing what happens.
He is the most interesting character in the series. I just feel like he is more manipulative than Lucifer himself lmao.

In Darksiders, Samael almost always in crouching position while he was talking with War. Perhaps analogous to his status as depowered.
While here in Darksiders II, Samael almost always standing straight while speaking with Death, signify him in all his glory.

Samael is my favorite character in this series. His bulky physique with the big ass meaty wings, the way he talks and laughs during battle, his heavy attacks, everything about him makes you think he really is as powerful as he claims to be and just playing around. He better be in Darksiders 3 Nordic!

Death is the leader of the four horseman in the darksiders story. He is the oldest and the strongest of the four and will go to great lengths to protect is siblings. I don’t know why people argue about who is stronger when there is such a clear cut winner on who is stronger.

Abbadon the Destroyer I'm not so sure. Samael spent the majority of fight sat on his throne, nonchalantly shooting fireballs at Death. That doesn't sound all out to me.
Also, take into consideration that this was in the past, and Samael apparently picked a fight with Lucifer between then and the events of 1 and was likely conserving his power for that. And remember that he was rumoured to be almost as powerful as Lucifer, who's lackey (Lilith) had the power to create the Nephilim, and she is far weaker than either of them.
So no, I doubt Death would have been able to kill Samael.
By the way, the whole Absalom thing you were talking about? Their first fight was 4v1 against Absalom and the second I would see he was actually far weaker. The corruption was more of a corrupting influence that twisted the lands than supercharger for Absalom himself.
Gotta love the way Samael's near-omniscience plays in a the the beginning, as he works out exactly what the circumstances are and corrects his own assumptions. Great way to build the threat, before he even moves.

The funniest part of this fight is that in Judaism Samael is the Archangel of Death... i.e. The Grim Reaper...in other words Death is fighting himself. lol

You know, if Genesis is to be believed. Samael has a sword that he can manifest and use in conjunction with his magic. You know what that means? It means he held back in this fight. We barely cut him and he was holding back, that's just awesome!
You forgot Death's true power is bound and seal by Charred Council. Death doesn't even use his limited Reaper Form nor having an Abyssal Armor during this fight canonically. Both of them fight with their full base power here, and yet Samael clearly exhaust at the end while Death remain the same, like not breaking a sweat at all to him. Truth is, Samael here is in his prime form, fully powered while Death is the one who doesn't even has half of his strength, yet he calmly challenge Samael
On the other hand that power doesn’t come naturally, it is given and revoked.
Samael isn’t exhausted, if anything he looks amused.
Samael makes it pretty clear that he’s just toying with Death for this bout, stopping only when Death proves capable of scratching him, and that pretty clearly took a lot of doing on Death’s part.
He pants twice because he’s just been struck in the face, given his skills as a manipulator and an extremely powerful demon it’s likely been a long time since Samael has had a decent scrap or even felt pain and he takes a second to acclimatise to the sensation. That’s all.
While Samael might be at his apex, he’s clearly holding back.
@@rustkarl He was probably holding back a little, but not completely. He was testing to see if Death could beat Corruption, which was a force that was literally ending all of existence. Samael himself couldn't stop it from consuming his kingdom. So in order to see if Death could do what Samael couldn't, he'd have to at least get close to full power during his fight. And Death didn't have his own Harvester, Abyssal Armor, or full power.
I think both at their peak, Death still wins.

If you notice, throughout the game Death always asks first for whatever he wants and only really gets snarky and pissed when refused for a stupid reason. Ironic for a guy named Death that killing isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
This glitchy boss I had to kill 3 times still does NOT downgrade DarkSiders II from the top of my best ever played games ever.
Lol i kinda found that's kinda fun,killing a badass boss with a badass theme 3 times just because of a glitch is enjoyable..atleast for me.

THQ went bankrupt and Nordic games got the rights. I think it's a massive possibility that Darksiders 3 will surface eventually cause the franchise did relatively well. If a game like Shenmue is finally getting another sequel after it actually the first 2 installments being a flop despite the game actually being really good, than things are definitely looking bright for Darksiders cause it was a profitable enough franchise, maybe not to COD standards of profit but it was still profitable cause it is popular enough.

Masterfully done. Samael (apocalyptic) gave me so much trouble that I quit the game for 4 months or so, then came back and beat him out of luck. Great series. Very underrated.
Samael is just a delight, both in character and play.
I enjoyed his boss fight quite a lot, though I enjoyed Darksiders 2 quite a lot in general.
Man I get chills watching Samael, this fucking dude... I love this version of him, kind of true to his angelic nature, Dark and Light sitting back and watching

Samael used that naievety to his advantage by sending War on his quest to destroy the Chosen. If War would bring him the 4 Black Hearts of Tiamat, the Griever, the Stygian and Silitha, he would help war get to the Black Tower...and he did! That War restored Samael to his full power, in the process was Samael's true plan.
He didnt lie, he omitted that part, as War didnt ask for it ....which ofcourse isnt that much different from lying: he told War the truth.... but ofcourse not the WHOLE truth!...

Samael is no joke. He’s a force to be reckoned with which is why he is very respected and feared in all realms.
Edit: In fact the horsemen were all sent to Samaels castle. But they were instructed not to fight Samael, only to send him a message that the council would like him to eventually take Lucifers place as the leader of hell. Lucifer did not take kindly to this news and has no intention of giving up his position to Samael, one of his arch nemesis.
Edit 2: Samael is such a big threat that to enact his plans in the apocalypse, Lucifer plotted against Samael and had him imprisoned. He then separated Samaels powers and placed them into the four chosen to prevent Samaels return. Then while Samael was imprisoned, Lucifer sent forces to destroy Samaels castle and defeat the demons loyal to Samael while it was leaderless destroying it (which is why it’s destroyed in Darksiders 2 and Death has to travel to the past to see Samael). In short, Lucifer made sure to go out of his way to ensure Samael did not meddle in his plans for the apocalypse. If Lucifer sees Samael as this much of a threat, that’s because he is. The four chosen that War kills in the first game were not to protect the iron throne but instead to prevent Samaels return at all cost. Even the fourth chosen, Silithia, told War that Samael would be a threat greater than all the four chosen combined. And they themselves were powerful.
Edit 3: In the second game one was also note that Samael has a degree of omnipotence. Only god level beings in the Darksiders universe are able to tap into omnipotence. Samael is a literal menace.
Samael also has a large degree of knowledge, having wandered around numerous realms. Samael was famous for watching numerous wars, conflicts and battles unfold (including the Nephilim war. Samael watched the Nephilim get slaughtered in Eden). Samael was nicknamed the red wanderer.
And finally Samael is a very ancient demon. He is far older than death, who is very old himself (Death is first generation Nephilim). This means Samael has a lot of years of experience. Thousands of years if not millions.

Samel represents something that few wish to acknowledge about Hell: it is a Meritocracy. Heaven is ruled by "Faith" and politics, while Hell is ruled through power and competence...and fear. Also fear.
Point is, Sammy here is a bad guy, but even the bad guy can have good qualities about him.

No, the time gap is too short. Fury's adventure take place after the end of Darksiders 2, where Death has sacrifice his life to restored humanity. Hence why Death is declare "missing" by the Council and there a humans in Darksiders 3

in old ngosticism Samael was reffered to as the angel of death ( also reffered to as death itself, Satan, or the Grim reaper) his wife was also said to be lillith. It's interesting to find games like these holding such lore.

Also lastly he didn't even bother going reaper form so he didn't kill him so he could get the demon key.

However death at full power with the seventh seal broken is one of the most powerful people in the setting. Behind the Creator (who may or may not be still alive) Lucifer and the charred council.
In the lore it is stated that the mightest lords of heaven and demons of hell fear the horsemen.
The council gave them a huge amount of power to keep the balance.

Samael. Abaddon sucked it up in the beginning of DS1; he almost got killed by some random lesser demon, had to be rescued by Uriel, and then Straga squished him without any resistance on his part. Samael on the other hand is said to have more raw power than any demon in any realm (according to Lilith anyway).

@@altair227 First of all from a gameplay perspective, that was the choice of the player. It has nothing to do with the story. You can activate reaper form yourself during this fight.
Second of all, let’s say your right, Death couldn’t use his full power even if he wanted to. This tells me you weren’t paying attention to the story. Death was limited because this mission wasn’t sanctioned therefore he couldn’t use his full power nor could he use his main weapon of choice; his schythes that can transform into any weapon he thinks about. If you read the abomination vault Death even has the power to bring souls back to life as long as they have not been dead for a long time. He has done this to his brother War in the realm/planet of Kothysos. You only saw a fraction of what Death can do in this game.
Last but not least, even with the seals broken, and death being able to use his full power, he would not stand a chance against Samael. Samael is equivalent to a god in terms of raw power. Samael even has a degree of omnipotence. Death can only wish to hold that much power. Even with all the horsemen combined at full power and their main weapons in their arsenal, Samael is noted to still be far beyond that. If Samael wanted to he could have ended this fight in less than a second. At full power Death would not have faired much better either. To defeat Samael they are going to have to work together and even then they would have to hope for a miracle. Samael is no regular demon. He is a demon lord for a reason. He’s the second most powerful demon in the Darksiders universe after Lucifer and his raw power even comes close to Lucifers. Samael is one of the most powerful beings in existence in the Darksiders universe. Why do you think Lucifer ordered Samaels capture? Samael was too much of a problem and would have foiled his plans. After Samaels capture, Lucifer sent forces to Samaels castle to destroy it and kill the demons loyal to him which is why Samaels realm is destroyed upon Death visiting it. Death has to travel to the past in order to meet Samael.
Lucifer and Samael are arch enemies. In the Darksiders 1 prequel comics, the four horsemen are sent to Samaels castle to send him a message from the council that “Lucifers time is running out and that they wish for Samael to replace him.” Of course Lucifer does not agree with this call and has different plans. During the events of Genesis, Samael was the only demon lord who was not fooled by Lucifer. Nor was he intimidated by Lucifer. Lucifer, being a master manipulator and the prince of hell did not like this at all. From that moment on he always had it out for Samael.
Death is indeed the strongest horseman he is the only being in creation that has stopped Absalom twice and could have defeated samael had he went reaper. And technically he is nigh invulnerable because war impaled him with chaoseater and it had no effect death actually laughed

If you still run into that problem, do this:
Right after the little Quick Time Event, don't run back to the platform, but insted jump into the lava.
You'll lose a bit of health, but the cutscene will play.

+Date Masamune Yea that happened to me a couple of times. I take it you mean that he won't summon the arena to him at 3:19 ? If that is the case, just jump into the lava as soon as the little QTE finishes. It solved it for me, and tons of others

Okay so the timeline goes, The entirety of Darksiders Genesis, then the opening of Darksiders 1 up until War is arrested for his supposed crime, Death's journey to restore humanity, aquit War of this "crime", and bring an end to the Nephilim, Death's sacrifice tonrestore humanity, then the entirety of Darksiders 3, and then finally, the rest of Darksiders 1.
This shows how death is the strongest of the 4 horseman
I don't have the skill to do this fight on this difficulty but my god even on normal, it was still a blast. Samael is so effing cool!
Agreed, it took me more time and effort to beat Samael than it did Absalom, and when i saw that Samael only had a small scratch on his cheek after beating him and i realized he was holding back, i wondered how much stronger he'd be if he got serious.

I agree, but when i wrote the comment i hadn't finished the game yet and had only just defeated Samael. Maybe on nightmare it will be a lot harder, because the Uriel and Abbadon fight in Darksider 1 were really great and a lot of fun
Man this fight was such a pain in the ass, Samael constantly falling into the pit of lava and bugging out, I was pretty salty by the time the fight finally didn't glitch, I think I spent 2 hours in it.
