Bostons are prone to eye injury and some endocrine problems. Their teeth are very hard to take care of because of the construction of their skulls. Their origin is not a mystery. They are the first American breed and the first dog bred expressly as a companion dog with no "job" like hunting or protection. That said they are absolutely the best companion dog breed ever. They don't need a lot of space for exercise. They hardly shed their single coat. (They should wear a coat when it's very cold out.) They are great with kids and other animals, generally, and tend not to be destructive. You can't get a better small dog as a friend.

I still have a younger 1, Josie, who also adored Bell…she didn’t eat or play for over a week after we had to have Bella put to sleep. We were literally talking about making a vet appointment for her (she was drinking fine…she just seemed depressed) when she finally ate a treat. We will adopt again, mostly for Josie, but IDK if we will look for a Boston again. Mine & my sister’s both had health issues & cost a fortune in vet bills the last 2 yrs of their life. My sister’s Boston died of seizure complications at only 8 & mine had heart failure at around 8/9 ( I was her 4th mom & not sure of her exact age) & died at approx 10…that is just way too young!

They are also pretty safe to have if you have small kids as they tend to not be very aggressive to people. They are relatively quiet and always very expressive and curious. They can also go from super lazy and chill to high energy very fast. They don't always get along with other dogs though and will also try to hunt small rodents so they might be aggressive to pet hamsters and rats, I have witnessed my dog looking for mice before in the basement and even catching a few (I didn't really like it when she did it because mice can carry all sorts of diseases). Another thing is that they can be pretty inbreed and you should probably make sure that there isn't too much of that if you decide to get one. My dog is a pretty good example of what a healthy purebred should look like, but even among the healthy purebreds there is a lot of variation in how they look.

Hello, Boston Terrier owner here. I’ve grown up with two of them, and both of them liked to run off. It killed the first one.
The first one, a sporty girl named Gretchen, was extremely playful and was essentially a running ball of pins to us kids. She wasn’t really sweet or cuddly, but was extremely playful.
The second (fortunately still alive) is named Mallory, and she has the complete opposite personality. She’s very sweet and cuddly, and wants to do nothing but that. She’s very timid, and even the sound of the wind against our house on a rainy day makes her shake like a leaf in the wind. She’s not very active, and even just a few minutes of playing is enough to tucker her out for a nap (completely the opposite of Gretchen who would still want to play more even after half an hour of keep away, which she loved). Mallory did have some health challenges as a pup. She had this thing where her tear ducts popped out and we had to turn to a vet to handle the issue. She occasionally struggles to breath because of her short snout.
Overall, not a bad breed. They don’t like water much in my experience, and their tendency to run away is a big problem. That second reason is why I’ll never own another one when Mallory dies. We’re constantly in terror that a single thoughtless mistake will kill her.

My family adopted our grandpa’s akc Boston terrier when he was about two years. Dylan is now 14 yearsold. His breathing has never been an issue for him, his snout is more pronounced than some though. He’s always been so well behaved, not an ounce of aggression, he was once mauled by a pit bull, never once did he try to fight back and after he forgot about it and still isn’t scared of other dogs. Not super affectionate but likes being around us. He has never been super energetic like other bostons either. As for health, he’s been healthier than I would’ve expected. (Sensitive stomach) it took us a while to get his diet just right for him, we are very selective on treats, if he drinks water to fast he’ll puke. (Ear infections) Don’t get me started on ear infections. (Cherry eye) when he was young he would get so many complements on how handsome he was especially for a Boston but after the 6~ year mark he’s gotten comments “is that an alien?” “What’s that in his eye?”. Teeth issues, a slight heart murmur now that he’s older. Shedding isn’t bad especially compared to my lab shepherd mix. But honestly he’s a great dog these things that I pointed out, if you want a LOW maintenance, family friendly, weird/hilarious dog, get a Boston Terrier. And compared to other bully breeds they are healthy.

My family had a Boston terrier named Lola and we only had her for a few years since my parents divorced and my sister, my mom, and me had to move. We moved into a house that didn’t allow pets but when my mom’s new boyfriend moved in, he was allowed to keep his two dogs which I find very unfair. We had to give Lola to a friend of my mom’s and I was 4-5 years old. I am now 16 years old and I found out that Lola passed about a year ago. I wish I got to at least spend time with her one more time even though I barely knew her.

My family has had two bosties ever since I was little, the first one Baxter was very sweet and loved naps. The older he got the more stubborn he got though, he had a chair that was his and there was no moving him from it. We sadly had to put him down in 2016 when he was about 13-14 he had gone blind and was having multiple problems with his back legs. Our current bostie olive is as sweet if not even sweeter then Baxter was, she’s always been a bit more playful then he was. She’s turning 8-9 this year and sadly has already gone blind she’s still happy and healthy though so hopefully we’ll have her for a bit more time.

I have had five Bostons. They are fantastic dogs. There is a story of where and why bread. Supposedly Judge and Gypsy was the parents. There are several issues as with any push face dog and two of my five had cancer tumors they can get cherry eye and all had back issues as they got older from jumping up/down and three out of five kept ear infections and two skin issues. Now these may or may not be breed specific and although all five came from reputable breeders there still could be breeding issues. Given any issues these dogs are some of the greatest dogs that someone could ever have. They are very smart and loyal and good guard dogs and not constant barkers. The are sweet and loving and want to be wherever you are and stay like a puppy in play and looks. They are intolerant to extreme heat and cold. Love love love Bostons ❤❤❤❤
