    I installed a "glass rinser" in my kitchen - like the ones you will see in bars. You press the glass down and it shoots strong streams of water inside to do a quick rinse/clean. It helps SOOO much the cleaning everything out after a brew. I Love it.

    One hidden feature of the Aeropress lid that makes it even more perfect for dosing, is the fact that it weighs exactly 50.0g. very convenient for the times that you forget to tare your scale and start pouring beans

    Love this video. Quite though-provoking. A few unsung heroes on my coffee bar (RUclips doesn't allow links in comments ☹ Sorry.)
    1. Silicone pinch bowls (available on Amazon) for dosing. Made for cooking. They come in different colors, so you know who you're dosing for. Usually sold in packs of four. Get the larger ones. IMHO- better and cheaper than the Aeropress caps.
    2. Stainless steel stir sticks (also available on Amazon) for pourovers. I've broken quite a few glass ones, so I've turned to stainless. Made for stirring cocktails.
    3. Rubber bar/coffee mat (also available on Amazon) for drying. Great for drying coffee gear after use and leaving out on the countertop for future use. I like the ones with the little fingers sticking up, such by S&T Inc.
    4. Not on my bar, but useful = 3 cu ft (85 liter) stand-along (dorm-size) freezer. Great for freezing beans in vacuum sealed containers. Tired of my wife complaining about my taking over part of the freezer for beans, so I got my own freezer. Quiet. Compact. And MINE.
    Keep up the good work!

    Great list. Since you mentioned the vacuum cleaner, I can also recommend getting a small electric air compressor / blower. I keep finding use cases for it, it's especially useful to clean your hand grinders. No need to take it a part or anything, you just take it outside and blow it clean.

    I recently got a dedicated bean doser. Worth it. I was using a cheap demitasse for a while and because the mouth was too wide, I would occasionally drop some beans. My favorite accessory right now is a tamping box w/ a drawer and spot for my tamper. It has kept my countertop a bit more organized, and espresso pucks don't mold and stick onto the bottom of the knock box like my Breville Mini did

    I use the lid from my old Baratza grinder (I now use the Fellow Ode2) to weigh beans and drop into a grinder. The lid is less useful to use with a manual grinder because it is so wide. But using it with the Fellow is great as it is wide enough to also give the beans a quick inspection for stones before dropping into the Fellow.

    My two favourite items:
    1. my selfmade dwt tool from a champagne cork fitted with 3d printer cleaning needles. Inexpensive and works magic!
    2. The comandante jar. I use it both to weigh out beans and to store ground coffee when taking it to work. This way I don’t have to worry about a scale at work as I know up to where I need to fill my aeropress up to have a decent brew ratio.

    TDS: Bottled water in France has to carry a TDS breakdown. I get one with 3 mg calcium per litre, which is the lowest I've heard of. Some of them have nearly 500 mg.
    Vacuum cleaner: I put a sheet of kitchen paper down on the working surface and do everything on that, then roll it up, use it to clean the shower screen and bin it once done.
    Dosing cup: I use a glass.

    Biggest and cheapest livesaver is a sheet of newspaper. Put it in the empty knockbox and it will make cleaning so easy.
    Also special shout-out to anti vibration feet/mattress from washing machines to put under the grinder. Helped in my case against noise (mazzer major)

    I like your videos. Very down to earth. I’ve got an aeropress go, so I’ll give the lid a try as a doser. I’ve also been using your switch recipe with great success depending on the beans. I tried cupping my current beans to get a baseline flavour profile, but I think your switch recipe brings out more flavour with these particular beans.

  • @RobertFHarrison
    @RobertFHarrison Месяц назад +5

    Thanks for the tip about a portable vacuum cleaner. I hadn't thought of that. My favorite gadget, though it's not as much a gadget as a product that will need to be replaced, is "canned air," the same as used for cleaning computer keyboards and such. It makes cleaning a grinder a whole lot easier as it will blow fines out of the last hard to get grooves and channels.

    • @borges87
      @borges87 Месяц назад +1

      Be careful with the type of compressed air you use. Lots of compressed air cans have a bitter agent to prevent people from using it to get high (yes, it's a thing), so it's not suitable to use it on a grinder, as it can get into your beans. I've never used compressed air, but I've read some comments about it on Reddit. I prefer a manual air blower, and got mine as a makeup accessory; it was way cheaper than the same thing but targeted as a coffee gadget. 🙃

    You’re better off getting a water titration kit than a TDS meter. They’re generally cheap, come with 50 or 100 test strips and will actually give you a useful breakdown of your water rather than TDS will is relatively useless other than just knowing an approximate range as you said.

    • @coffeechronicler
      @coffeechronicler  Месяц назад +2

      Drop kits, test kits and TDS meters each have their own use case. For every day use, the TDS meter is hands down faster and more efficient. Let's say you're blending a known mineral water with RO: Are you gonna count drops or compare light blue vs "slightly darker" light blue in the early morning before you had your first cup of coffee? Or just look at a number that reads in 1 second? I know what I'd prefer :)

    • @leroythecoffeegeek4611
      @leroythecoffeegeek4611 Месяц назад

      @@coffeechronicler that’s true, for specific situations like that it’s a great option. I meant that a titration kit is more widely usable for testing tap water, that’s all.

  • @GabrielGGabGattringer
    @GabrielGGabGattringer Месяц назад +2

    Water! Yes! But: These TDS meters are usually pretty inaccurate unfortunately. Honestly I´d rather get a bag of coffee for the 13 bucks this TDS pen costs. Bean dosing vessel: I use a repurposed glass jar which was meant for candles. Or a Comandate jar, which I own a handful of anyway.
    WDT Tool, a brush to clean the grinder, Melodrip, Aeropress funnel, ...

    • @coffeechronicler
      @coffeechronicler  Месяц назад +3

      I see this type of comment about TDS-meters once in a while.... but my experience with this particular one is that it's surprisingly consistent in its reading and a lot more convenient than any alternatives there might be out there.
      For example, I'm very likely to take several readings with a coffee sample in a refractometer and get different readings each time. But this one will usually show the same. So if I want to get a general idea of a bottle of water or local tap water source - I trust this.
