    I purchased two copies of Amazing Spider-Man 129 in 1977 at age 9 for $2.00 each at a flea market and in VF condition and still own today in NM Once I had them pressed. No one read my books but me.

      I absolutely agree. And tastes change. I often go through my collection and sell books I once thought I wanted to keep, but I always focus on what I enjoy the most. For me the decision to remove books from my collection and sell them off is never a struggle.

    Love the stories and insight, thank you for sharing. I'm collecting again after collecting through my teens and early 20s, now much older (lol). I'm really drawn to Golden Age now for the art and paper, however my LCS doesn't really get much Golden so I'm buying mostly online. I'm looking for better ways, different obscure auction sites, antique malls, but I'm never really finding the deals. By deals I mean not marked up x% over Covrprice or even Ebay comps. I'll start looking for local trade options with this push. Appreciate it. Subbed.

      Thank you so much for the feedback my friend! Yes, I’ve come back to comics after quitting twice before and I do feel my age lol…where are you located? If you were in NJ every so often we could do some trading. Definitely ask around. You’ll see local groups like the ones posted by me. They are often called your “your town” happenings. Once you know the group is near you, ask if people collect near you. I suspect you’ll find you are not the only one looking for a comic network. Good luck my friend and thank you again for joining our channel!

    I’ve only gotten back to collecting comic books and learning. I do look for keys and runs of certain events but to relieve the stress of value I just dig through the $1 bins or when stores have huge discounts on back issues. Free isn’t realistic. I think the point is, if we’re willing to trade, and our books that we trade have value, if we had them for a while, or picked them up cheap, the result of our win/win trades can be fantastic for our collections

    Excellent and inspiring video!
    Thanks for the tips. I've been collecting comic books for a year, focusing on good reads, great covers, and key issues for trading. I visit my local comic shop every Wednesday and now have about 11 short boxes. My goal was to collect every Spawn release and use them for trading to complete the run.
    Now, I'm ready to start trading. Your video was perfect timing and very helpful. Any recommendations for trade groups or Facebook groups?
    Also, I'm in the Albany area and curious which comic shop you're referring to. Could it be Zombie Planet or Earthworld?

    • @Johnthecomicguy
      @Johnthecomicguy  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so glad the timing was perfect. I think you should check your area Facebook for local happening in your are. I have a local happenings group in my town on Facebook. Ask, “does anybody collect comics and would you like to connect/trade?” And see if they respond. You can also ask your local store owners if they ever have comic collecting clubs etc. I suspect, if John and Matt are still in business, they go by “Excellent Adventures”. That was their name down in Pemberton, NJ and I think they would keep that name. If there is no Excellent Adventures near Albany now, sadly they may have closed.

      @@Johnthecomicguy wasn’t sure what to expect when I started collecting comic books. I wanted to ensure I was doing it for the right reasons while supporting my local comic shop (LCS). They’ve now labeled me their number one customer, which means I get first dibs on any new comic book arrivals, including ratios, incentives, or one-per-shop exclusives.
      I know that all my books are modern and don’t hold the same value as vintage books, but that’s not my current goal. I aim to collect desirable new releases to trade for older, common back issues of Spawn books. Soon, I’ll make a RUclips video explaining my process and begin my journey into trading. Your inspiring video has given me much confidence in this journey, so thank you.
      I also did a Google search for “excellent adventures” and found a shop in Ballston Spa, New York. I haven’t visited yet, but I plan to check it out soon.
      Thanks for the tips on what to say in trading groups. This adventure is purely for fun, and I’m excited to explore the world of comic books and learn about trading.

      I think you absolutely have the right idea. It’s funny with so many hobbies…we have so many questions and often don’t know where to get answers or ideas. Comics fundamentally is a wonderful and simple concept, but add in age, money, variant covers and marketing ideas…suddenly a once simple hobby gets complicated. While I would never presume to know other peoples collecting motivations, I would say, try to ever getting caught up in hype and “hot book” feeding frenzy’s. While obvious, it is much harder in practice. You’ll see books with cool variant covers…and then people online selling them at a premium…and people will pile on and as you observe that…feel the need to join in. If at all possible, resist it. I find paying premiums in a feeding frenzy often cause frustration and more dangerous…resentment towards the hobby. Don’t rush things. As time progresses, you’ll know exactly how you enjoy the hobby the most…and follow that instinct.

    How do you trade? Are you always carrying around a short box of trade items or something?

    • @Johnthecomicguy
      @Johnthecomicguy  2 месяца назад

      I actually used to, but now, there are local Facebook communities and through the past decade, I keep a list of friends and when I get new collections, I reach out to my friends (also known as my VIP buddies, and I let them know I have a new collection to dig through. Some come with cash, some with books to trade…and after that, I then advertise on the Facebook communities and I highlight that I am willing g to trade. This is a “local” statement. So far, I have not done any trading via mail, but perhaps in the future might be willing to do that. About 12/20 years ago, I used to always carry about 20-30 tradable comics in a computer bag…even if I had to travel for business via airplane. I’d take books with me and always look for local stores (titan comics in Texas, places in Philly and Atlanta also) and see if they would trade with me. When driving, I used to keep a short box in my trunk and whenever I saw a store in a town, I’d stop in (usually only store owners had trade authorization) and hope somebody would trade with me. It is always hit or miss, but I was always prepared. Now that I am far more established, I have a tight group of about 10/15 people that I trade with and these individuals pretty much always have their own inventory that I’d be interested in some books they are selling. It does take effort, but as usual, if I’m prepared, and have books in hand, I can usually pick up something I want or even would rather have in inventory because I also try to track what my friends/customers are looking for.

    • @Johnthecomicguy
      @Johnthecomicguy  2 месяца назад

      I forgot to mention…as in business, I always make my intentions known to people…whenever people come over, or message me via Facebook, I let them know my general prices (3 for $10, $5 and $10 and higher boxes.) so they know my pricing and also I often let them k ow in the posting, I am open to trading…just in case they are up for trading…I want to encourage that.

      I think there must be a misunderstanding, I don’t believe free is an option (at least not for me). And I also think everybody needs to win in a trade/acquisition (which is definitely the point of our ongoing networking). But in the network I’m a part of, each participant in trades leave happy, and have done this for over 30+ years. My trading groups continue regardless of the comic market…and when we trade, everybody is happy.
