How many decades later and this is still one of the most badass things ever recorded? Damn, man.
I know, saw them do it live brilliant
Heard it while in Lebanon long time ago ... Helmets & Guns & Rolling Stones
This song is 51 years old
Yeah, this song is timeless and ageless in a way that very few songs are, Still every bit as darkly powerful today and sounds as timely as ever over the past year
It’s my ringtone!
Merry Clayton’s vocals on this track are beyond iconic.
She MAKES this song.
@@kikimcqueen8459, they called her up late at night while she was PREGNANT, and she laid this down like a BOSS!
HERO!
@@bluereenie2 yes, but unfortunately she had a miscarriage right after recording this.
I couldn't hear it here (too much going on) but at the moment when her voice breaks you can hear Mick Jagger in the background whooping. He knew how lucky they were to have her.
@@helengraves7850 when her voice breaks is the best part of the song - perfectly captures how high the emotions are. Gives me goosebumps every time.
The unadulterated, sheer joy in these videos is addictive. I'm almost jealous that you're hearing these for the first time. This is such a cool idea. You guys are so cool.
Kelly Lafferty i a, having the same reaction. I love these guys!
It is awesome
I am completely jealous. No almost about it.
I love listening with you!
Agree! Such joy!
The best part of this is seeing the reaction. You’re exposing new generations to great artists and songs. We older people assume younger people know these songs. It does my heart good seeing young black men showing genuine enjoyment to all forms of music.
Yes and us old timer’s love seeing how smart and open minded these young people are.
Yes, because in my/our time ('60s and '70s), race didn't matter when it came to good music!
The female vocalist on this, Merry Clayton..her voice gives me literal goosebumps!
Right???!! Who the hell has a voice like that???!!!
The voice crack in the final ‘murder’ is incredible but also quite harrowing when you learn about the repercussions she faced by putting so much into that performance
Dang, another Merry? I was unaware.
@@finn6359 Yes, so sad, she had a miscarriage right after this session.
Same here.
Since more than 35ys,
over and over again.
Not a lot of people these days like to admit when they don't know something. For you and your brother to admit it, and learn IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE is really refreshing.
YES! I hope you're as open to appreciating today's music!
That's what I said. ☺️
They have such a great understanding of music too; without being told they just land on what makes these songs great on the first listen
Yes!!
*This is considered by many to be one of the finest rock n roll songs ever recorded.*
Everything about it is perfect, but most especially Merry Clayton’s emotional delivery.
Absolutely incredible, powerful song and I never get sick of it. ♥️
Definitely my favorite.
Rock around the Clock was Bill Haley and the Comets.
Still get chills.
Never get tired of hearing it. The Stones best.
I could not agree more! If I had to pick one song that captured that era (when I was alive and coming of age), this would be the one.
I can never hear this song without a sense of horror and the doom we felt about Viet Nam. Gives me chills, 50 years later.
fucking this
Well said.
Thank you for serving and welcome home 😊
Lost a brother and good friends.... but I appreciate this song and the reactions!
This and Paint it Black
Gimme Shelter has one of the greatest intros ever in my opinion.
Of ALLL Time!!
Absolutely! Gives me the same feeling every single time....never gets watered down🤘🏼
Greatest song ever in my opinion
Yep, best all time intro.
I was around when this song came out. This is one of the greatest songs ever.
I've heard this song many, many times and I'm still goosebumped.
Listen to "Paint it Black", "Sympathy for the Devil", and "Satisfaction"....for starters. The Rolling Stones are among the greatest godfathers of rock and roll.
YES!! One of my favorite bands. All those songs you listed are great
Wish more listened to them on the reaction videos
Steve Brown because it’s the only 1 they know
RnR came out in 1950's
@Steve Brown Paint it Black annoys me.
Jagger is Merry Clayton’s back up singer as far as I’m concerned. She makes this banger!
That's so TRUE. Whenever I hear this song I don't "hear Jagger's voice" This song belongs to Merry Clayton.
@arbella MC is certainly awesome on this tune... transcendent even... but without Mick on vocals and Keith on lead guitar there is no Gimme Shelter... perfect harmony with all three and rest of band... take out one there's no masterpiece
RIP Merry
@@benestrope3173 Merry Clayton is still very much with us!
I think mick would absolutely agree with you
This young man knows EXACTLY what he hears and what he is talking about. Excellent!
Chills every time I hear this song. 50 years of chills.
Absolutely, amen, sister! It never, ever gets old. When Mick wrote this song, he was onto something really good. Then they got Merri out of bed, curlers and all, and they struck absolute GOLD. This song is legend.
"Rolling Stone" is a magazine, "The Rolling Stones" is a band. And yes, they are BANGING!!!
I'm a little older than these guys, 32, and am aware of both, but is there a connection between the two? Which came first? That I don't know.
@@tsovloj6510 The group in '62. Magazine in '67.
I'm from the olden days, when the Rolling Stones were young. This kid is just adorable!
Good people of the world unite!
I'm from those days too. And yes, he IS adorable.
Me too
The woman doing the background vocals was about to have a baby when she did this. During their recording session, they realized they needed background vocals. They called her in the middle of the night and asked her to come to the studio. She did, big belly and all. The rest is history. You can see it on "20 Feet from Stardom".
That documentary was absolutely fascinating. Proof that the ones with the talent don’t always get due credit. Some of those backing singer’s voices!!!!! Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
She put a fur coat on over her pajamas to go to the studio.
notorious_MERE
😆 Yes I remember that. I had visions of them in the recording studio in the small hours, as described. This woman rocks up in her fur coat and pyjamas. They start- then it comes to her bit- and she belts out R-- M---!!! They must have literally turned to look at one another 😆. History in the making. Thank god someone made that call in the small hours.
I did not hear that story!
Mary Clayton....
Never forget the first time I heard this song exactly 50 years ago, laying on the floor of my room, head phones on, drifting away to another place and time. LOVE seeing your reaction so many years later and discovering this iconic band, maybe the best that's ever lived!
Funny that you mentioned this "laying on the floor".............I did the same in my bedroom head phones on eyes closed................ volume on 10 and there you go
This song is in three great movies: Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed
Right, you hear a Stones track and you know it's a Scorsese film.
Well one great movie then
All by Scorsese
Risky Business on the train. Oh yeah!
Scorsese directed an incredible documentary on The Rolling Stones as well!
Merry Clayton still gives me chills after 50 years.
lets just all take a moment to recognize the greatness of Merry Clayton... she freaking nailed it!
*while pregnant
When Merry Claytons Voice cracks in that 3rd part i can’t help but get a tear in my eye
I wait for that every time I hear this song!
You can faintly hear someone shout 'whoa!' from the studio control room after her voice breaks in that bit.
Joel Taylor yah that was Mick Jagger
I get goose bumps every single time I hear it. There is legitimate blood magic infused into this recording.
@@joeltaylor2830 its Mick Jagger in the background..... Song gives me shivers everytime

There’s a music magazine named Rolling Stone, that’s probably what you were seeing. The band is The Rolling Stones and fans just say Stones for short. There are 5 members in the band. Mick Jagger - vocals, Keith Richards - guitar, Ronnie Wood - guitar, Charlie Watts - drums and Darryl Jones - bass. That’s the current line-up but members have come and gone through the years.
"I thought Rolling Stone was a clothing brand because a lot of people wear Rolling Stone!" Lol. I'd never thought of that but it's true. Also, he's thinking of Rolling Stone the mag. Love it.
Yeah lol I laughed at first but I guess a young person would think their concert tees were a clothing label. Yes, he mixed up the band and the magazine. Hopefully he'll read these comments 😏
Yeah I laughed too but when you think about it, it’s easy to understand if you didn’t know.
I grew up with my mother's Rolling Stones albums and I remember being confused that there was also a magazine called Rolling Stone. Also, the clothing brand remark is totally valid, the band logo IS a brand these days.
This is my all time favourite Rolling Stones song.
During the time that this song was recorded, the Rolling Stones typically consisted of singer, two guitarists, bass player and drummer. They also frequently used a keyboard player on many recordings. The female vocalist is Merry Clayton. Oddly enough, the Stones had lost one guitarist and were still trying to get a full time replacement, so on this song's recoding guitarist Keith Richards actually played all of the guitar parts. Glad you liked the song, this is definitely one awesome band!!! Peace and long life!
Hey young fella, Rolling Stone got their name from Muddy Waters tune Rollin stone. Chicago Blues influenced a whole generation from the name of a group to the Rolling Stone magazine. Check out Muddy Waters.
Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters is the best!!
@@peace3652 An answer to Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man"
Oh my gosh, someone else likes muddy waters! I love Muddy Waters.
The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll. Muddy Watters and the Rolling Stones are a great example of the power of influence in art. There's a video with Muddy Waters and he calls the stones up on stage. Might be Mannish Boy.
@@erinlewis264 I've seen that video many times when Muddy called the Stones on stage, and it's indeed Mannish Boy!!
One of the greatest anti-war tunes made. IMO
It's about war as well as street crime.
cosmicVox13 every song in the late 60s early 70s was about war..lol
That's not my comment. I said "ONE of the greatest" anti-war songs.
Coolrockndad no offense but Black Sabbath War Pigs is the greatest anti-war songs ever written 🤷🏾♂️
@@drummerboy2834 I did say "one of the greatest". ;-)
It's freakin beautiful to see him let this music do things to him x
There were 5 Rolling Stones in the band at the time, but on this particular track Keith played all the guitars, so it was 4 Stones and of course the splendid Merry Clayton added those amazing countervocals.
I saw a documentary about the recording of this song and Merry Clayton was pulled out of bed in the middle of the night 7 months pregnant in her curlers! She didn't want to come and she makes the song.
Right! She never even heard of the Stones. She said when she got there, she thought to herself, “I’m going to blow these guys out of the water!” And she did blow their minds with her excellent awesome solo!
Here ya go, ruclips.net/video/_gU8fzjs22E/видео.html
@Lesley Wynter Yes, that was so horrible. She couldn't help but remember that every time she heard that tune after that fateful night...

Lmao “ HOLD UP SIR” Reactions are the best!!! I can’t stop watching this channel!!
I didn't read through all the comments but, if nobody has informed you yet, Merry Clayton ripped her vocals to shreds recording this song. That is dedication! And it shows!!!!
its gets to me everytime
This was a Viet Nam war protest song from the 60s. Most artists and Bands had at least one song about the war during that time. This was the Rolling Stone's.
I was waiting for somebody to recognize that this was in fact a protest song. I was about 15 when my mom took me to the movie theater to have a "bonding moment" and "Gimme Shelter" was the one she took me to. (She liked the Rolling Stones because Ed Sullivan liked them). The movie was the Rolling Stones live at Altamont. It had all the graphics of the Hell's Angels attacking and killing a man in front of the stage. Mick Jagger looked really scared but they kept playing. My mom was appalled because she didn't know exactly what the film depicted. She was even more appalled when they sang "Midnight Rambler." Needless to say, my mom never took me to the movies again for a "bonding moment."
No it wasn't
A request! The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil. Amazing song! Incredible to see live, 15 mins!
Thanks for all the positive vibes, bringing a ton of joy to a load of people. 💓 I hope some of these artists invite you to their gigs!

Fun Fact:
Mary Clayton when she screeched you hear Mick Jagger yell out "whooh!" That was a blooper they kept in the song. Her voice cracked and it's said she apologized for it. Since it was raw the Stones kept it in the song. That's why you still hear Mick in the background.
I did not know this fact! Thanks for sharing it! Love the Twins!
Mary Clayton was pregnant at the time - Mick Jagger sent a car for her in the middle of the night to pick her up. She rocked it!
Totally!
I love seeing the reactions to the music of 50 years ago! I'm 72 now, but this still speaks to my soul! So happy younger people are discovering the music and messages .
It's hard to conceive that people do not know Rolling Stones are an iconic rock band. And Mick Jagger.
So glad you listened to them!
Do y'all see him waving his elbows by his side he's a natural Mick Jagger of course he's going to like this
I am 27 and was raised on this. My dad saw the Stones in a 100 person capacity venue for a quid back in the day (and many times since), I love how music transcends time. I constantly discovered "old" music as a teen and even now still, it blows my mind.
It is so special that first moment you hear a song that impacts you
“ I thought is was a clothing brand”... such a refreshing comment!
LMAO!
Merry Clayton made the most iconic voice crack of all time. Beautiful!
I always wait for that crack and then Mick's 'yeah!' immediately after. Man-o-man!!

Rolling Stone magazine is a seminal rock magazine started in the 60's in San Francisco. It was by far the most successful music magazine in history; especially in the 70's when rock mags were the only way fans could read about their favorite bands. It's still around today, and still has some of the best political writing available. (The band The Rolling Stones came out first.)
