Thank you so much! I was completely blown away by Vikingur Olafssons recording of this piece. Because of your amazing work, I will now at least attempt to learn this.
Sean Rooney showed this piece to me, and I was in tears as soon as I heard it. Such a strong piece that feels like it is talking about a story of a harsh journey that is sad, hard, something you wanna give up, something that is miserable and hopeless, but then it is telling me that everything is gonna be ok. The hardships are told, but the message of hope is there. Thank you for sharing. I am a selftaught adult beginner pianist, been playing for 4 yrs and I am now intrigued to try your tutorial for the first time. This channel is gold, you really changed the way people learn piano and I am so sure you made thousands of people start to play the piano. Thank you, Jane. You are such a noble person!
Appreciate your kind message, Seongtaek. Sean Rooney has struggled through those ups and downs. He was the first to prove that my slow tutorial idea worked. I hold him dear to my heart and am more grateful to him than he realizes. Please look through my easy sight reading series. They might alter the way you view sheet music. Enjoy learning the sublime BWV 528.
@@janepianotutorials You are very perceptive Jane. Yes I have a good musical ear and I play a lot by it and you have helped me. In any case, thank you and keep doing this amazing work. And a very Merry Christmas my friend.
Hi Jane. I am a 77 year old intermediate piano student. (retired engineer) I began playing about 8 years ago, went through double surgeries to replace the CMC joints on both hands with prostheses. (Not the usual mutilation where they remove the trapezium and replace it with a ball of tendons stripped from your arms!😝 I practice at least an hour every day and my hands work just fine, thanks to excellent medical science. I can give more information on this if there is interest. I have had excellent teaching and learned the Bach first Cello Prelude for piano during the 2 years of surgery and recovery, and a couple of other pieces of comparable difficulty. When I listened to Vikingur's version of the Organ sonata I could hardly breathe. Could I learn it? Could I not try? And then I found this. Thank you for courage and for your demonstration of technique. I'll let you know how it goes in the comments in your channel.
Thanks for introducing yourself. I am inspired by what you went through to play piano, and was mesmerized by that Vikingur Olafsson video!! I sincerely look forward to hearing of your progress and performance. Best wishes always.

Hi Jane I have just found your tutorials and this is amazing. Thank you so much I now have hope that I will actually enjoy learning this Sonata. Just wonderful.
@janepianotutorials Thank you so much for your reply. I was mislead because of what you play in the tutorial, corresponds to the andante section. The score really is in IMSLP. Thanks for the amazing tutorials!
Hi Jane I've been learning this piece for a couple days now but as I was listening to Víkingur Ólafsson's recording and noticed that he put some fast ornaments on the measure about 8:52 on your video. What was he playing on that and how do I do it? Thanks
pianists often play ornaments differently. editions differ also. that's why the inconsistency drives this math person nuts. i usually follow Gould's if its on YT. play what sounds best to you?
@@janepianotutorials i feel like there should be a definitely some kind of ornaments on that particular measure as I was listening to other pianists recordings besides Vikingur, they also have some ornaments on there as well. So I might as well try. You think the ornaments were by left hand or right hand?
@@minoupark A new comment brought me back here. I do not get notified of replies to replies. Did you find the score in IMSLP? it is under the "arrangements and transcriptions" tab.

The fingering of this tutorial is incorrect and makes playing in real speed and proper expression much more difficult. If you want to study and play this piece I recommend Vikingur Olafssons recording. It is possible to play it in this scholar's manner, but this great piece deserves much more.
Fingering always needs to adjusted to suit individual hand structure. Mine span 9 and are sort of flexible. If an edition has fingering, I follow it. Otherwise it is impromptu while sight reading to make the tutorial. My tutorials are mainly for occasional note-checking. Thanks for caring and bringing up the subject.
@@janepianotutorials I agree fingering is individual, but my old teacher told me there are some rules, which are quite usefull to accept (whenever it is usefull, they are not absolute). For me works to play melodies each by different hand. It is easier then to accent one of them. For example - in bar in 7:54 from your video play 8th notes by left hand and 32th by right hand (well not the octavas, but the rest), in second part of bar with crossed hands.
@@janepianotutorials A lot of masters including Olaffson play it this way, you invented bad fingering. I do not see any consistency there and paying in tempo makes it more difficult. It can be used for some kind of finger fittness or acrobacy.
@@jaroslavtachovsky No worries, feedback indicates most of my viewers have teachers and mainly use these for note-checking. They also know not to blindly follow my impromptu fingering. How about making a tutorial for the parts where I used terrible fingering? I will refer viewers to it. Thanks for helping!
I suppose this piece is rather difficult. How would you rate it in relation to a piece like the Allemande from the C minor french suite? I'm learning that one and I have my eyes on this piece next but maybe it's too difficult for me. The allemande, for reference, is kind of easy for me.
Think the. 528 is quite a bit more difficult, but don’t recall exactly. I usually put a level in each video description. That level is based on how difficult it was for me sight reading to make the tutorial. Thus a rough guide.
It doesn't really matter. Choose a line that looks most difficult and practice just that. If you can learn it in a reasonable length of time, you know you can learn the rest. The more we challenge ourselves, the faster we improve.
Thank you. Where can we find the scores?
