  • Hello Folks....
another project go to bluestemstringsDOTCOM for the Frank Proffit banjo plan.....it is free thanks to RUDY thank you !!!!!!
I put the plan on CD and had it enlarged it wasn't up to full size but was close...I cut out the plan drawings to use a templates, and compared the banjo to the plan by laying the instrument right on it...definitely helped ward of trouble although I had some...I also recommend reading the Foxfire # 3 book on banjo building I got a copy from the library...
I wanted to put this up as a more detailed look at the process.....
I at first started to use a tailpiece that would help draw tension down on the head, this was a mistake, it muffled the sound...in the end I just looped the strings over the hitch pin and let them ride over the bridge that was it..... I put a 7 degree slope in the neck because I wanted to be able to adjust the action....when you bending your metal for the rim make sure it is even...use a cut off coffee can the bottom edge that way you have a nice symmetrical ring, mine wasn't quite so but it worked anyway.... I wanted to make the banjo of stuff I had lying around....well I;m sure there is more but I can't think of anything right now....lots of pictures not all the greatest...and definitely not the best sound track ;) I'm pretty low tech .... I start playing the actual banjo that is being made around 2:38 hope this helps
    happy building and playing cj

I feel like the beauty of this "stereophonic multimedia event" is just how low tech you can go.
THAT IS the beauty of an Appalachian Mountain banjo!
    Thanks for sharing.

The best wood is what you have. It should be straight and dry.My pot will be oak 9.5 inches. The neck oak again. Fox fire has some good plans too. Picture is worth a thousand wotds, so thanks.

Thanks for checking it out... Oak has a wonderful tone, i have played some oak slit drums people have made...if i ever make another I think I am going to use pine, or birch...

Birch seems a good choice. If you want to bend it for a banjo pot it's pliable too.I was thinking beech might be good too. It's common around us bends well.It has a lot of water in it green.I had air dried oak ,so I went with that.

In reference to your comment about the center wood, I think probably the depth of the sound chamber will have the biggest influence my was fairly deep on this one, smaller the chamber i think not as loud and maybe a bit thinner sound if that makes sense... Awww now you've gone and dun it I want to build another one now.. ;)

    That was interesting.
Bluestem has a lot of good material. I use his guitar fret spacing chart all the time.

Nice to document the build process Cj, fitting the skin in was always a bit of a mystery to me.

So you think it's the depth of the pot that is critical, not the wood layers making up that depth? Pine vs.Birch maybe? Star your opinion on that. Thanks

The wood does have an effect on the sound, but a banjo made of pine with a smaller resonator chamber, will have a thinner sound than a pine resonator that is thick, i just remember too from my tack head banjo build that the thickness of the hide is really key... get the thinnest hide you can, it will give you better harmonic's or overtones for lack of a better term... here is the tackhead banjo video

and yes wood does play a big roll this is cherry rim with a walnut tone ring essentially

I don't think the middle wood in the center of the banjo is critical and it could be anything. Pine maybe or spruce even. Your opinion?

I've had the wood and these plans for about a year now and having a hard time getting started on this project. Your video helps for sure. Are there any specific tips you have for this build that I might have missed from just looking at the plans? Thanks.

Stick with the dimensions recommend in the plan, I found having and extra set printed then cutting out the images and taping on the wood helped the process...if I was going to build another I would do one all in pine, cheap easy to get and easy to work..good luck post a vid of the finished banjo would love to see it ...best regards cj

Thanks, I hadn't even thought of pine. I have some really nice curly maple and walnut, but the huge chunks that I started with were super warped and that's still presenting some difficulty...plus I don't want to ruin such nice wood on my first attempt, so I'm glad you suggested pine.

greennovemberfire glad I could help, pine makes a nice banjo, hmmm!!! now I'm thinking of making another one!!! your know Mr. Proffit used what he had on hand...
