I could make any of those work. I like the stock Sterling pickups though as well. I think the "fret clack" some folks are talking about is not the pickups, that is the instrument construction / fretwire choice. Could be somewhat mitigated with string type, but I think overall that "clack" will help you in most mixes where a Stingray would be the bass of choice.
I think the Bigman pups gave it a sweet bite. Nice updates snd great test drives on this one!
Thank you for the video. These are my favourite so far IMHO... :)
This is probably my favorite one yet, just has that extra stingray sauce going on, really gives a 70s classic tone,
This sounds really nice!!! And the org wasn't bad either !!!!
It sounds so full, and has a nice growl/snarl as well!!
Wow, this pickup is particularly good! There's a nice little bit of crispyness in the treble but it's so full and smooth at the same time. And with a nice mid character. That bass would sit in a mix really well with this pickup!
I laugh every time I see the lobster paw joke. It’s so formidable! Thanks for making my day joyful ❤
Awesome review, lobster. 😎🤘🏻🎸 that Nordstrand big man pickup sounds phenomenal. It’s got some nice rich tones. Big tight lows with growling mids and clear highs. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback on nordstrand pickups. And these pickups sounds incredible. If I own a bass with an mm-style, I would consider getting this pickup.
sounds very articulate ,got me a gibson multi tool. adjusted my gibson lpb-2. neck ,action. 👍👍👍. ,love the way your bass sounds. have a good day
Woua ! Massive upgrade here. Excellent
The Nordstrand sounds really good. Thanks Lobster 😅
Powerful mids! Definitely into this pickup
Pretty sure this is my fav so far. Tons of character, and still sounds like it's a Stingray
Nice mods. Good color combination. Great sound too. You are the: Bass Whisperer.
I have this pickup in my 2004 Stingray 5 and can confirm that it’s awesome. I run it in parallel as I tried it in series and it sounded like it was out of control. I’m not sure Nordstrand intends it to run in series. It has more more natural mids than a stock MM and less “scoop”. The guys in my band love the sound.
So they do come in 5 string? I’d love to throw one in one of my stingrays! Or even snag a ray 35
To wire it in parallel do you need a 18volt alimentation?
Thank you for this video! I have the same pickup but for the SUB5. Tonemonster SEB Preamp, wired in series only. My snark tuner kept shooting off the end of it so now I just use a Geiger counter. Looking forward to hearing the rest of your builds!
Didn't you have issues with string spacing? The SUB5 has a tighter spacing than the higher models and the strings don't align with polepieces in most aftermarket pickups.
@@Bassdriver I did! Had to return the first one I ordered. They make one for "OLP" that has tighter pole spacing. Fits perfectly. I'm also left handed, so I had to flip it around. Works with no problem.
Man, this is my favorite so far, it's SUPER rich, the mids are awesome! I'm not a huge fan of MusicMan, but I really dig the tones you're getting with this pickup.
Actually, listening to the two Nordy ones again, kinda side-by-side, I prefer the Blademan, but this one as a close second. Indeed the Blademan is a bit more tamed on the highs, which I prefer. I agree with you that it's a bit more rounded.
@@DiogoBaeder yeah, I think this should be combined with another pickup.
In parallel this is by far the best sounding so far. Series is too hot like the factory pickup. I think they make this with a 10% lower winding to help with this.
My ears may be broken, but the stock pickups seem to have more bottom end/fullness. These are more articulate and "punchy" if that makes sense.
I think they both have the same low end, however the Mids and highs are more pronounced so it sounds like there are no lows.
I know I’m late to the party with this one but came to your channel first to look up the Nordy Bigman. The website says this is 1/4” deeper than standard. Did you have to do any modifications to the body depth or just use a thinner bit of foam under the pickup? I appreciate any insight! As usual your videos are amazing, fun, helpful, well thought out, the whole package! Thank you Good Sir!
Is it strange the stock pickups are still my favorite?
The stock clips sound as if there's something rattling. Strings hitting the pup, maybe? I've listened to all your comparisons so far and haven't noticed that. The Nordy set-up doesn't have that. That aside, the Nord seems "airier" (I really HATE describing tone!) and hi-fi. Sounds really good!
Thanks! I wasn't hitting the pole but I noticed that too. I try to setup these pickups so I don't hit the poles. The clipping in series happens because the signal is a little too hot for my setup.
I just bought a Bigman and a John East preamp to install them in an Harley Benton
Heck ya man lmk how it goes. I'm putting a set of dimarzio relentless p and j style with a gunstreet volume/tone volume/tone configuration but rn its synched together which is bullshit
I got a problem in wiring the Bigman in parallel.
If I wire the Bigman in series everything is ok, but of I wire it in parallel, the output volume is very very low, almost imperceptible...
Why?
You can just hear the thump coming out of this pick up… sounds hot for sure
Nice video. Nice pickup, too. The Bigman can also be ordered with alnico 3 pickups to warm up the tone. I’d love to hear that one, too!
Do they keep the great character tho? that's what my question is.
Good question. Very good. Once we get a DEMONSTRATION of said pickups, we just may have that answer, lord willing and the creek don’t rise.
@johngeddes7894 I reckon we won't but I might be buying it with those and make it myself.
Hey Lobster, what are you thoughts on artificially darkening up fretboards simply for an aesthetic reason? Is it doable or a waste of time? Also would you ever consider doing a video showing how to do a bass setup when you buy a bass that's not quite ready out of the box? Thanks Lobster!
the pickup sounds great. Can you say anything about what it would be like passive (without a preamp)? I'm trying to find out if I could get a totally passive bass with these and have it keep up with my active EMG MMTW in my other bass but I can hardly find any info about how it would compare at all.
I like the Blademan a little better also. But this one is HOT!!
MC5 FE/M2 this one is for 5 strings but you can find the 4 strings version.
Rear coil, front coil, parallel and series.. Clean sound with no humm.. Check it out when you can.. I installed it on my harley benton mb5...
I've been wanting to ask you.. What tuning keys you can recommend for the Harley benton mb5 bass.?
Great vid lobster! Sooo harley benton just released a mustang and would love your opinion on it before I throw my money on em... again.
Wouldn't that be funny if a burgundy mist one was headed to my doorstep tomorrow? ;)
@@LowEndLobster you sir are a legend!
@@LowEndLobster I mean seriously, the two times I've given request on your channel you have delivered on the same week unknowingly or not. Thank you!!!
In the room with these pickups you’ve covered so far. Are they sounding drastically different? With my headphones they’re sounding quite similar. They are all pronounced, bright, lots articulable fret noise, punchy bass. Well sculpted tones but missing some fullness. I’m just thinking it’s the overwhelming preamp voicing I’m hearing.
+1 this. Would appreciate it to get a summary closeout after all the individual pickup features if possible.
@@SixteenVoiceI’m pretty sure he said he’s going to do that! Really looking forward to it!!
do you prefer these pickups or the Bartolini's or the originals that the Music Mans come with ?
Hope you end up doing a Herrick with all 8 coils lol
Uhm yeah these are really nice too.
Awesome demo Lobster.
The only way you could possibly ruin the sound of this bass is if you let Pete Wentz play it. 😁👍
I like the original one more XD
"Naked" I like the big blademan more but in a mix this one might be better.
Needs lower value volume and perhaps treble pots.
yo
So far, this pickup is the most different sounding. All the others so far have definitely sounded Stingrayesque, this one is - well, different.
Too much string "clackiness" for my taste. I have the same issue with the Nordstrand Big Splits that came in my Ibanez EHB1505ms - the pronounced clacking sound of the strings against the frets bugs me.
Once you start down the fretless path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
Some EQ might help, identifying the “clack” frequency ant attenuating a bit with a pointy Q curve
Also, in the context of a song, that clackiness becomes swing 😊
@@BearfootBob I play upright and fretless as well, which I love, but I like fretted for some stuff 🙂
@@rafbass True, and I certainly would for any recording, but seems a bit annoying to have to do that for just noodling at home when just plugging into an amp to get a sound that doesn't have a quality that's bugging me. And for the context of this series, I certainly wouldn't choose a pickup like this to install knowing that it had sonic qualities that I didn't like.
Wow what a bright one. It would be great for a tenor bass
Nordstrand pickups no matter what bass they are in, are too bright for my taste.
Not good sounds cheap.
