I have a 5-string with that exact Norstrand config. except ceramic pickup, and the dominance of the mids was the first thing that I noticed. And that price was definitely 3 years ago.
I prefer the Aguilar combo, that 1K mid frequency is just a little harsh sounding in my experience. Aguilars 800hz just sounds more musical to me, but it always comes down to the players preference.
Hi Lobster, thanks very much for all the pickup and preamp comparisons. Just ordered myself a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and John East 2-band preamp. As I am a lefty it will take some knob swapping for the preamp. All thanks to you honestly!
I am lefty as well, and was debating a stingray, but the sub is all I can find. How much did you have to mess around with the John East preamp? You said you had to swap knobs being a lefty?
@@Johnny4Clover I ordered the right handed version from John East without the knobplate. I took the knobplate of the left handed SUB and put the right handed knobs on the left handed plate. Only thing is that the knobs turn the “wrong way”, but that’s no big deal of course. John East does not sell left handed versions of the preamp with knobplate he told me.
YUP! Nordy wins for me! I’m ticked that Cary discontinued the 2b MM preamp; but this one with the MM 4.2 pickup? On yeah! Nordy wins for me! Gonna put this in my SUB! Thanks Lobster!😌👍🏾
Welcome! Fyi the SR5 pickup comes in two shapes, the USA "rectangle" and the Sterling pickup with the little nubbins like the 4 string pickup. Not all the manufacturers produce both, so be sure to double check. Additionally, you can get a new pickguard and route out a very small bit of material to use the USA style pickup :). I did the 4's here because pickups sizes are standard
@@LowEndLobster mine has the small ears on the side while my Ray34 PB Sterling has one small ear and one wider ear on the sides. I'm sure Cary from Nordstrand would work with me on the pickup covers if I need a small change
Well here we GO!!..watching again on my 360 watt sony soundbar and sub!!!!....gonna listen to all the choices so there is no variables.....sounds great in my book possibly a front runner so far!!!
Seems I'm the only one.... but for me the Aguilar Pickup is the clear winner for now. This one sounds nice, but the other one nailed the Stingray tone IMHO. About the preamp, I think the winner is the Nordstrand, I didn't liked too much the aguilar one, at least for this kind of bass.
Another great preamp option. Loved that this has the passive humbucker tone option. We think you may have a black stringray with maple problem. Lobster: I CAN STOP ANYTIME!
Cool demo. I think the nordstrand electronics sounded a little brighter compared to the aguilar electronics. both preamps and pickups sounded good in their own way and it sounds like you can't go wrong with either one. pretty solid for capturing that classic sting ray sound. and I'll bet that they sound killer with distortion pedals.
Thanks for another great video Lobster :) Can't wait for the Delano and Darkglass! And I hope you will do a side by side comparison of all the options in the end.
Think I like Nordstrandt more, but Aguilar was good too! I'm going to pick favorites each day and after all videos have been released go back through them. Hopefully I can draw some definite conclusions at that point!
I think I like the sound of the Nordstrands a little better. Seemed to be a little brighter and punchier, but both sounded really freakin' good! I'm now considering a modded SUB as a travel bass. Somewhere along the line do you think you could try one of those out in a BEAD configuration?
@@LowEndLobster I’m not a BEAD player either, my two 4 strings (80s MIJ P-bass and Yamaha fretless) are in standard tuning, but I used to be in a worship band that travelled a lot to play at conferences. I’ve been considering buying a cheap 4 string mod platform that I can tune BEAD if I end up traveling with that band again. All the songs we did were down tuned and I rarely if ever used the G string. Seems a modded SUB with BEAD strings would fit the bill and not make me cry if it got lost, destroyed or stolen.
Mids at 400hz sounds great with this pickup and preamp combo! I'd probably leave it at that all the time with everything centered 🤘 Listening side by side with the Aguilar video, the Nordstrand has a nice brightness and punchy midrange. The Aguilar by comparison has a really overwhelming low end. Both are awesome options.
It’s freakin awesome. I will never be able to see a mm bass without craving seafood 🦞. I think they need to make a LEL signature bass. Tho I have no idea what that would be...
I think I like this preamp the best, but would opt for the 2 band so I can reuse the knobs I have and not have to get concentric knobs. Duncan Ceramic or this pickup though? Better than Aguilars, in my opinion. I think Nordstrand makes some of the best pickups out there - they're quite costly though. As for the EQ - pulling that mid control does the job.
