I always thought it was odd that the creator of all languages was so inept that it wrote a book so open to interpretation. One thing that preachers always do...ALWAYS...is say something like..."this is what the Bible says, now let me tell you what it means...or let me tell you what god means by that". The individual human interpreters aspect to his or hers god's word is so transparent to me. It always has been. Just yet another reason why I had to take a couple steps back and say, "Hey, wait a sec" when in came to the inerrant word of the creator of all. Gee, one would think that, even in translation, its words would not be up for human interpretation.
FishHeadSalad One thing you have to realize dude is you're talking about the English language. There are so many words that mean the same thing, but has a completely different context to them. It's a mixture of literally 4 different languages, (German, French, Greek, Latin) and has so many rules and interpretations literally due to the simple order of words. Bloody hell, simple sentences get misinterpreted in text messages all the time. It's no surprise to me that so many different people can get different interpretations.

No one knows everything. You can know a lot about something yet a little percentage about that particular thing would still be there to know. If you read the bible you'll also see that god is one of the biggest mass murderers and liars, that he fails to keep promises, that he is a bit of a diva in general and easily offended, and throws tantrums when people don't do what he wants. It's almost like God is just a concept and not an entity. The power of any given god seems to be directly proportional to how many people believe that the god has power. If a million people believe that God wants X to happen, then by golly X is going to happen - but "God" won't be doing it.

Very insightful. I have had similar arguments with believers about the ten commandments. Whenever marriage comes into conversation, They constantly quote Genesis with "man and wife become one flesh" and Jesus and Paul say, "only one wife" (Paul actually said not to get married at all, unless you absolutely had to). No matter how many times you point out all of the Biblical figures all having multiple wives... they respond, "But that was the Old Testament!" I keep trying to point out that Jesus and Paul were both apocalyptic prophets that thought the world was going to end in their own day...
There are a fair few examples of New Testament teachings of Jesus where actually said stuff that reinforced the OT (e.g. killing your son for striking you or adultery) or said that the OT was god's word and humans shouldn't try and interpret the teachings, just follow them Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Luke 16:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one dot of the Law to become void and if OT is to be left behind, then how can the anti-gay stuff in the OT be used...
Gobtik Jesus said absolutely nothing about homosexuality... unless you take the Christian leap of thinking that Jesus actually did address it in passages like Matthew 19:1-8 for example... in which he addresses divorce specifically and uses "man and wife" and "one flesh". I've read the Bible. I spent a year and a half very genuinely trying to believe. It never took. And I worked VERY hard at it, spending time with the pastors of my church, reading the Bible, and doing study with others from the church. People like Seth Andrews and Matt Dillahunty were DEEPLY immersed in the church for many, many years before leaving it behind. So, again, with what supposedly lies in the balance, God really, really needed to do a better job of convincing us. And let's be honest. If a Muslim were to say to you "Allah will give understanding of His word and bring clarity to anyone who reads it, all they have to do is ask Him", I very sincerely you could just flip a switch, even if you wanted to, and suddenly "see the light" of the Qu'ran. My point from the beginning was that Bible does, in fact, contain the things in it that AronRa points out. And they are not pretty.

Being deeply immersed in church means nothing. Anyone can take up space on a pew (a lot of church going folk do exactly that which is one reason I don't like going to church). I feel like a lot of people go with it simply because its how they were raised a.k.a "mommy and daddy said its right" (now THAT is bogus right there lol). I don't know how I even stumbled upon this video, but I must say it was great to watch. What I do think is less great is that in America (which is the #1 country in the world measured by power, influence etc) you really have to lecture these things in order to make people see the reality where we live in. I'm from Finland which is, as other Nordic countries, quite a atheist country and I could never even imagine such a situation. While the concept of religion might give some balance and purpose to your life it should never be taken as seriously (and seriously wrong) as people seem to do, especially in America. While fundamentals in all religions take things too seriously and literally, it seems that in America more than anywhere, people seem to justify their daily non-biblical (something that goes against God's biblical will) decisions by God somehow. It's sad that these things even have to be lectured but oddly I'm still happy for it. It was really worth the listen, thank you for that. Hopefully one day we will live in a world where we would have a purpose. Purpose of loving yourself and people close to you regardless of religions and ideologies and letting others live their lives as they please.
Great video! Once again, one of the easiest and best ways for anyone to stop believing in the Christian God is to read the Bible. Actually, I think that can be said for any religion and its scriptures...So many religions and religious sects are the original stories filtered through someone else's interpretation and then further modified by the priest/pastor/imam/speaker/whatever. Once you read the original story, however, it becomes obvious that it cannot be true.

Think the talk was more on the values of what is considered was then considered moral ground and how most of that is not tolerated today. Whether you believe a heaven or a hell exists, basing your morals upon a book is bound to have problems as books can't ask questions that later generations have.
Aaron Archer The problem with the Bible is, there are now so many different versions each worded slightly different and still open to interpretation. I think every head in each of the 40,000 denominations need to be sat down and go through each version and decide on a definitive version that everyone can follow and scrap the rest. I always thought it was odd that the creator of all languages was so inept that it wrote a book so open to interpretation. Just yet another reason why I had to take a couple steps back and say, "Hey, wait a sec" when in came to the inerrant word of the creator of all. Gee, one would think that, even in translation, its words would not be up for human interpretation.

It's a mixture of literally 4 different languages, (German, French, Greek, Latin) and has so many rules and interpretations literally due to the simple order of words. This is true of many religions, and not just Christianity. It's true in the past and today. Why does God have to tell you who to kill, instead of snapping his fingers and making them go poof? Why does God have to whisper in your ear to tell you what social policies he wants you to promote, instead of just telling everyone what he wants? Why does God have to ghost-author a book through the tool of anonymous fallible human men writing in only the local language, instead of pretty much any other method of communicating with the world?
It's almost like God is just a concept and not an entity. The power of any given god seems to be directly proportional to how many people believe that the god has power. If a million people believe that God wants X to happen, then by golly X is going to happen - but "God" won't be doing it.

Very insightful. I have had similar arguments with believers about the ten commandments. Whenever marriage comes into conversation, They constantly quote Genesis with "man and wife become one flesh" and Jesus and Paul say, "only one wife" (Paul actually said not to get married at all, unless you absolutely had to). No matter how many times you point out all of the Biblical figures all having multiple wives... they respond, "But that was the Old Testament!" I keep trying to point out that Jesus and Paul were both apocalyptic prophets that thought the world was going to end in their own day...
There are a fair few examples of New Testament teachings of Jesus where actually said stuff that reinforced the OT (e.g. killing your son for striking you or adultery) or said that the OT was god's word and humans shouldn't try and interpret the teachings, just follow them
Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Luke 16:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one dot of the Law to become void

I've read the Bible. I spent a year and a half very genuinely trying to believe. It never took. And I worked VERY hard at it, spending time with the pastors of my church, reading the Bible, and doing study with others from the church. People like Seth Andrews and Matt Dillahunty were DEEPLY immersed in the church for many, many years before leaving it behind. So, again, with what supposedly lies in the balance, God really, really needed to do a better job of convincing us.

I don't know how I even stumbled upon this video, but I must say it was great to watch.
What I do think is less great is that in America (which is the #1 country in the world measured by power, influence etc) you really have to lecture these things in order to make people see the reality where we live in. I'm from Finland which is, as other Nordic countries, quite a atheist country and I could never even imagine such a situation. While the concept of religion might give some balance and purpose to your life it should never be taken as seriously (and seriously wrong) as people seem to do, especially in America. While fundamentals in all religions take things too seriously and literally, it seems that in America more than anywhere, people seem to justify their daily non-biblical (something that goes against God's biblical will) decisions by God somehow. It's sad that these things even have to be lectured but oddly I'm still happy for it. It was really worth the listen, thank you for that. Hopefully one day we will live in a world where we would have a purpose. Purpose of loving yourself and people close to you regardless of religions and ideologies and letting others live their lives as they please.
Great video! Once again, one of the easiest and best ways for anyone to stop believing in the Christian God is to read the Bible. Actually, I think that can be said for any religion and its scriptures...So many religions and religious sects are the original stories filtered through someone else's interpretation and then further modified by the priest/pastor/imam/speaker/whatever. Once you read the original story, however, it becomes obvious that it cannot be true.

No wonder god wants all these people down here talking to him, heaven must be 1 empty lonely place.
Think the talk was more on the values of what is considered was then considered moral ground and how most of that is not tolerated today.
Whether you believe a heaven or a hell exists, basing your morals upon a book is bound to have problems as books can't ask questions that later generations have.

The problem with the Bible is, there are now so many different versions each worded slightly different and still open to interpretation.
I think every head in each of the 40,000 denominations need to be sat down and go through each version and decide on a definitive version that everyone can follow and scrap the rest. That way everybody is reading from the same page when taking quotes from the bible
