I mean the Kona and the Elantra N's are different so yes that's stuff makes a difference. GTI definitely wins this one no question but the Elantra walked the GTI so it does go to show that variables DO make a difference.
Nah the first roll he just wasn’t ready and didn’t really know what to expect but the second go around he was ready in that golf! I happen to be a huge fan of Hyundai too. I’m actually thinking about trading the Type R in.
MK8Golf R, golf Clubsport will both be faster than all of the Ns. It’s also kind of unfair to compare a baseline GTI to the top preformance cars of Hyundai. Clubsport and R should be compared. And no not the R that was on a platform from 10 years ago that doesn’t count either lol
The octane learning in the Kona holds it back if it’s not drivin right or doesn’t get ran on 91 or better it cuts power, I’ve been running higher octane in mine and it’s helped
I don´t know why the KONA loses nearly all those races here - On German dynos the KONA N kicks out a engine power of 305-309 hp !!! And with the DCT it should never lose a race with a Golf GTI !!!
MK8 GTI’s are no joke. Volkswagen continues to improve and impress with their engineering. What originally seemed to not be a huge improvement over the Mk7 on paper, the MK8 is much more powerful and shows it’s potential through the tunes that’ve come out for it that add way more power than the MK7 is capable of with just software. The Kona N seems like a well put together, fast mini-suv that’s hard not to like.

Were both running 91 octane fuel? The "N" engine has octane adaptive parameters. Don't know if the GTi does are not. Kona N will run fine on 87 octane, but the ignition and fuel delivery parameters are dialed down. Makes about 240-250HP on 87 octane.
The Kona still has the power to weight ratio advantage. I notice the Kona driver's reaction time is no better than the Golf's driver which can spell the difference. Also, the gear ratios, including the final one, can also influence the result. A 0.32 vs 0.31 drag coefficient is not significant enough to influence at 100 mph or so.
By the way I have the Kona and what happened here is because the heavy wheels Hyundai put on it, I did put after market wheels for winter and I was shocked when I saw change in car performance with it and for sure will beat the GTI with it
The issue is sam, Different cars are tuned differently for their automatic mode. So for instance, an ELENTRA N will easily make more TQ and boost on automatic mode compared to a GTI. When you use manual mode you get to use the maximum power and TQ of the car in the right gear. The issue is people mess up yes, but it's much more of a fair race that way
Race both the Elantra and Kona N. 40lbs difference, same engine and transmission. Should be close ... not according to the last videos I've seen on your channel.
There is only something like 100lbs weight difference from the EN to KN with essentially the same drivetrain. Haha love these Hyundai fanboys , when elentra N wins they trash talk VW, when GTI wins against Kona N there goes the excuses like tires, aerodynamics and etc😅😅😅. So childish
I mean the Kona and the Elantra N's are different so yes that's stuff makes a difference. GTI definitely wins this one no question but the Elantra walked the GTI so it does go to show that variables DO make a difference.
Agreed, they are insufferable
In the end it's still a junk Korean car that sounds like a tin can when you close the door.
I agree, where were these fanboys in the 90s/2000s fanboying over Hyundais? 😂
Extremely edgy community. They wanna be taken seriously. Lol
@@ruthlessruth846 agreed
The octane learning in the Kona holds it back if it’s not drivin right or doesn’t get ran on 91 or better it cuts power, I’ve been running higher octane in mine and it’s helped
(N Grin Shift), over boost). 👍🏼😉
💪🏻😎
Pretty slow reaction by the Kona driver. The race between these two vehicles is decided by the driver due to their being so closely matched.
Nice! Wow I thought the Kona N would take the GTI. Great race! Sam proving points left and right on the channel!
Follow-up question... Did you time these runs? Would be interesting to know the gaps. Thank you!
Unfortunately GPS dragy doesn’t work there
@@SamCarLegion Got it. Thank you again.

that wasnt a bus length you blind bat, and he was pulling, next race he won
I don´t know why the KONA loses nearly all those races here - On German dynos the KONA N kicks out a engine power of 305-309 hp !!!
And with the DCT it should never lose a race with a Golf GTI !!!
For N, do you fill premium gas with high Octane number? N has different PS with different fuel.
Launch control with handbrake on 😅
The N hands down.
Are you sure? I won't spoil it for you.
Nah…
Kona smokes it
lol just wrong Driving on Kona N here ... i own a Kona N myself and i blowed away already some GTI's ...
Love you videos ,joy to watch them
MK8 GTI’s are no joke.

I’m pretty sure it was on 87 they never check that on this channel that’s why they don’t show the psi.
Thanks for this Sam u finally delivered 🙌

Launch control in the GTI seemed much better in this video than the one vs the Elantra N. What traction mode were you using?
Crazy that the Elantra N walks away from a Golf R but the Kona N struggles with a GTi.
blows my mind too
There is only something like 100lbs weight difference from the EN to KN with essentially the same drivetrain. The R also has a better power to weight ratio than the GTi and still got destroyed by the EN. Almost makes me wonder if they neutered the Kona N so the Elantra feels more sporty and Kona feels more family.
@@JohnSmith-nz5yu Would have more to do with gear ratio's and final drive combined with the 100lbs extra weight especially if Hyundai used the same drive train specs across the range of N models.
@@davidgriggs3967 Fair point. I guess I had just assumed that they would be using the exact same 8 speed with the same ratios in both these cars.
After a bit of digging it looks like all the gear ratios are the same but the final drive is 2.71 for the EN vs 2.81 for the Kona.
The golf R will do this to the Elentra N
Well that's what I said on that last video but when the Golf R destroyed the Elantra N with the Owner driving the Golf R but the Hyundai mob tried to tell me I'm wrong even though I have a stock Golf R waiting for anyone with a Hyundai N to show me that I'll lose to them from a dig 😉 😀 😜
@@nascarnord2278 lol what happened in the first race....you seem to have left that out......no Excuses now
@@davidbarlow372 That's easy the reason is simply because Sam is not a good drag racer and for those cars to have such close horsepower do you really believe that with the Hyundai Elantra N spinning and the Golf R having that launch he was going to get caught. 😀 yeah right some was was obviously sand bagging look at the RPM in the Golf R barely get to redline from Second to third 🙄 or third to fourth. I guess everything is logical as for race between an SUV and Hatchback...🤷♀️
but they're the essentially the same space wise..
I've never considered Kona N to be a SUV. It definitely favors a traditional hatchback > SUV.
The Kona was was very quiet, comma wasn't even in end mode because the exhaust was hardly audible? Also I am curious as to how many miles were on the Kona?
Exactly, this race was not how the cars compare so something was not right
Lol the excuses. Go look at actual track times and dragy/vbox numbers. The Kona doesn’t impress as much as the Elantra does. Still impressive and quick, but it’s not going to trap 105 like the Gti
@@PapiAndrey Nobody is making excuses as there are Kona's on RUclips trapping at a 105 miles an hour plus.
Sorry about my talk to txt message but I'm sure most got the point🤔😋
@@klasseact6663 All good and your point on how many miles were on that Kona is a point. I have watched many youtube races of the kona and elantra N's and they are pretty close in 0-60 and 1/4 times and thats why this race is another questionable one.
What happened to the Golf R? That would be a much better match up. I also would not have said the Golf R lost 🤔 yes it did in a roll but on a dig it clearly won by a few busses 🚌!
How would that be a better match up , R is awd ?
Ps the VW in video is a gti btw
@@davidgriggs3967 I know it’s a GTI I guess I may have spoken to soon. I clearly overestimated the Kona N in this video. The Kona N seems to pretty quick but it certainly didn’t match up to the new GTI which only proves my point I highly doubt the Elantra N has a chance against the new Golf R!

Aerodynamics and weight
even more so, the R

reaction time is a full second " this is heavier that's why" absolute nonce driving the kona.
Nothing a throttle pedal sensitivity can't fix.
To be honest with the kona n he lost the races already at the start because of his bad reaction time. I dont know if he could‘ve win but it would be way more close..

this is odd. in the race with the mk8 gti vs the Elentra N the Elentra N destroyed the gti. but the gti was not shifting well after the launch, it bogged down every race. in this race when the GTI launched it did not bog at all. so something changed in the gti between that race and this one. i say that because i cant believe the GTI won this but got multi bus gapped with he elentra n
When WE launched those cars always KONA WIN the race. You are doing something wrong...
Not surprised at all. Whoever drove the Kona sucks. Bad.
241 vs 276 hp and the GTI still wins resp is equal. Good for the Kona N that the Golf was not an Clubsport GTI (300 hp) or an R (320 hp). It would have been atomized. :) These are rockets compared to the normal GTI.
Fastback is way faster; its on GTI CS Level 👍
I don’t like either brand, but you’ve got to let more experienced owners drive these cars to get their true potential. I know I know it’s all just for fun, but some of these viewers are taking this way to seriously
