@TheSparkleBrigade it is wierd, because he´s gone from the more offensive player he was 2003-2005, to a more counter-defensive player..maybe he´s altered his string tension or something, for more consistency rather than power on his groundstrokes, i don´t know..
What alot of people fail to see is the winning stats on first serve of Andy Roddick's. While he doesn't have the best footwork, volley and baseline game, he still has the best winning percentage on the first serve (exclude Karlovic) for a number of consecutive years. It clearly shows how effective his serve is.
GyariSan Unfortunately first serve % doesn't win you tennis matches. You're _supposed_ to hold your serve. How well is irrelevant. It is mostly about _breaking_ serve, and partly about how well you serve at 0-40.
@derekanaya his serve is unique because he has a double jointed wrist- i have no doubt that he does strength exercises for his wrist and shoulder, but the reason why it works for him is because of his wrist.
I'm sorry I believe you misunderstood me. The Pure Drive, which is by far the most popular racket by Babolat and can be used to represent the brand because the other Babolats are rather rare on tour. It has a thick cross section and a very high degree of stiffness. It generates a lot of its own pace and therefore doesn't enjoy the success of other brands like Head or Wilson, whose flagship rackets are thin, soft, and flexible.
Roddick has tried to add more dimensions to his game over the years but its just his technique that gets in the way. His game is actually very similar to Nadal's game, but Nadal's movement around the court is much better and nobody can put spin on the ball like Nadal and grind out a match against his opponents. Roddick doesnt have the best serve ever...its just the fastest and he rarely double faults. Federer's serve is actually better because he places and mixes his serve up better.
Larry has quite a weird game. He has a modern style forehand that's designed to generate heavy topspin, and a one handed backhand that's totally old school. He's an unbelievable coach though. He REALLY gives you results.
@teknogeek1995 it really depends on u as a player, and what you're looking for in a racquet. Tenniswarehouse has a channel on utube; u can comment on their page asking about both racquets
@thisnamealsotaken I will agree that the level of play has increased. But if you just look at the videos of old and new (even without even recorded speeds) Roddick's play has changed. Statistically he now has way less winners (and unforced errors) than before. And Roddick was still hitting a lot of winners against players like Federer in 2004 and 2005 (prime fed), so the level of play didn't dramatically affect Roddick's play. It was a decision made by him for whatever reason.
@wonhoyoung notice that you are watching a video. it is much different than watching it live because ive went to wimbledon and seen it live. its much faster than u think
@longhornmed I take back what I said before. After watching some more of Roddicks games, I think his backhand is excellent. It doesn't get much better than that.
Andy serving 120-150 MPH is the best in the biz as far as pace goes. The key to winning at the world class level is total game and adjusting to different strong points of your opponent. Federer seems to adjust better than most to this aspect of his opponent's strong points.
I've never seen you hit. However, what part of your arm was tired? If your forearm hurts you may just have an excessively whippy motion. Throwing around a racquet with a different weight than you're used to could tire your arm. Or if it was your entire arm you could be using your arm to generate racquet head speed instead of your kinetic chain. Or maybe something just got tweaked in your arm on a mis-hit. That happens too.
@IKayosI but look at guys like Agassi and El Aynaoui who actually struck the ball harder as they got past 30 to shorten the points so there wouldn't be a strain on their arms and guys like them had their best GS results past 30. Pushing the ball lengthens the points and longer rallies=more arm strain
have you noticed that when hitting the forehand, his oeft hand stays on the racket face until he practically he hit sthe ball. is this for balance ? or for timing?
That's true. On the other hand, Babolat doesn't manufacture anything with the soft control of, say, the Head Prestige series, the Wilson pro-staff and K-6.1 tour, or the Prince original Graphite or Diablo series. The trend with Babolat rackets is more towards powerful frames.
@TheSparkleBrigade ppl always say that about his strokes but what i think they forget is that it just looks like he doesnt rip his strokes cus of the fact that the players from the top 10 now are way bigger hitters than the top 10 of the times when roddick was early in his career. with the obvious exception of agassi, the rest would be outhitted any day by guys like nadal, djok, federer, soderling, delpo. the level is just way higher now and esp faster now.
Does anyone else find that Roddick's forehand has a lot of spin and not enough power? It just doesn't seem like he's getting enough force on those shots.
it's weird seeing ppl talk about how much ppl say mimicing his serve hurts them. I've been mimicing the serve for years and never felt pain in my shoulder or wrist, granted i've been working out for awhile now.
There's always this talk about his serve and forehand not being the beast that it was. But you have to understand the toll it takes on his arm, shoulder, and joints. The way servers and used to rip those forehands, it's this whip. He's in his late 20's he just doesn't have it in him to put that much strain on his arm.
@Deadeye287 I guess but I don't think El Aynaoui or Agassi were ever serving 130+ constantly or taking huge rips like Roddick. And as for Agassi, he was blessed by the tennis gods.
If anyone is going to try and replicate his serve ( I did...but only got it to 130 at my fastest) seriosuly consider some shoulder and wrist strengthining excercises. His serve WILL hurt your shoulder if you dont.... even HE still does the excercises.
naah dude its not a habit nor so tht u dnt injure urself. Its so u feel u hv the same grip all the time. Cuz whn u hit the ball the racket moves out of place a bit. nd when holdin a racquet minimal things feel like huge difference so its to find your grip again nd feel comfortable wth it.
thats actually a really tough call to make, if u combine the fact of how fast roddick serves, and watchin his matches he places it very well, also since he can slice, and kick it anywhere with the same toss, not just blast it, and add the fact that federer seems to be able to just know where roddick serves on instinct which is why Roddick barely gets aces on Fed. Roddick actually has the better serve.
I'm willing to say that Roddick would've won at least 4. I don't play "what if", but if we take a look: Wimbledon 04 - He was blazing. To Federer's own admittance, he would've likely lost without the rain delay. Wimbledon 09 - the final speaks for itself, & he took out Murray in great fashion during the semis. US Open 06 - His tournament to win outside of Fed. US Open 07 - That Roddick & Federer QF was of the highest quality. Andy played much better than Djokovic did in the final.
I love how people laugh at him for only winning one slam! he has only been one of the top ten players for over 5 years, and done more in tennis then anyone on this post will ever do? sort it out people
@christianranardsings i feel his bh is actually fine, he slices a bit too much for my taste. His volleys are fine. His approach shots are different and his fh needs more work. Imo of course. His approach shots are the reason why it looks like his volleys suck, and his fh needs more power so he can plow through opponents like he used to. Again imo of course.
Lol. Righto there Saza, that's why, for top 100 ATP players, the number one racket is Head, and the number one overall on the tour is Wilson. Babolat rackets generate far too much of their own power to gain a dominant representation on tour. Those players can generate all of their own pace without an issue, they don't need additional power, so they don't play with Babolats -- most of them, anyway.
@foul01 I never said the one-handed backhand would improve his game. All I said is that based on Andy Roddick's gamestyle, it seems in my mind he looks like the kind of guy that would hit a one handed. Thats not based on anything, and it certainly isn't advice. I am very inferior when it comes to tennis, and would love to get lessons from the guy. Just when I see Roddick playing, and going for a backhand, I think that he would hit one-handed, and that two-handed looks weird on him.
I always like to cheer for Roddick, I just want him to win! But unfortunately he doesn't rip his groundstrokes like the good old days. And I heard he got shoulder surgery early in his career (after US open and probably after 2004), so could that be the reason he doesn't rip his serve as he used to?
@dodododa Some company did a test to calculate the rps of balls that players hit. Federer hits more topspin than any other pro besides Nadal. Also, they debunked the old myth that Roddick serves faster but Sampras used more spin. Roddick serves faster AND with more spin than Sampras did.
Roddick's serve is one of the best ever. I would say Sampras has a better one and maybe karlovic. Federer's serve is great, and it gets many aces, but Roddick has a more consistent one. You see Federer double fault quite often. Roddick might not get as many aces, but that's just because it's so fast, it usually forces errors.
Yeah roddick is a fuckin tank! I havn't watched tennis for a long time though and I was wondering what rank he is now? I think about 6th in the world, am I right?
@lkjkhfggd His backhand has improved a lot over the years. It used to be a big weakness, but now it's more of an underrated strength. But still, it's not the prettiest two-handed backhand out there.
@wonhoyoung so many players can serve 130+ even 135+ so his serve really isnt as special as it used to be. it sucks to because i roddick is one of my favorite players.
Ohh yeah. AO 07 is a definite. Fed's opponent was who? Gonzalez in the final, right? I think Roddick would've definitely beaten him, and any opponent Fed stopped along the way. Definitely. Wimbledon 03's a maybe for me. What I do know is that Philippoussis did not play very well in the final, compared to his level in the rest of the tournament. So Roddick certainly had a good chance. Both are fair additions, but I'd say that AO 07 was a stronger chance.
well i think Rafa played insanly well to win both the sf and the final, i honestly think Rafa would've beaten Andy in the final in 4 maybe 5 sets convincingly. This coming from a hardcore Roddick fan
@lkjkhfggd Andy just doesn't hit a very pretty two-hander, it's looks awkward at times, that's probably why you think the two-hander looks weird on him.
its a myth that pro players can play with either hand and of course, only one side is better. ppl who can play both sides tend to have a double handed backhand.
Royce Kim - not going to lower my self to insult you as I don't care what you think. Re-read my comments - my point is simply this - even if it's a just a warmup - why does Roddick hit with Larry? Surely he should have a better hitting partner and then have larry concentrating solely on coaching. I've seen a lot of pros hitting/warming up and they usually use lowly ranker players in the lower echelons of the pro game. Strange that Andy doesn't.
oh yes, a one trick pony that won the 2003 US open and made it to 4 other grand slam finals, while "well-rounded" players like Gasquet and Nalbandian are struggling to just get past the 1st 2 rounds. Roddick is not a 1 trick pony. He has one of the best forehands in the game and have improved his backhand and volley
roddick is my idol!!! whether he plays bad or not!!! he will always be my idol next to safin!!!
omg. the camera angle at 3:12 is the BEST for looking at how hard he hits that ball
@TheSparkleBrigade it is wierd, because he´s gone from the more offensive player he was 2003-2005, to a more counter-defensive player..maybe he´s altered his string tension or something, for more consistency rather than power on his groundstrokes, i don´t know..

Don't copy that technique, You need to keep it much cleaner than that. So does he ;-) There are lots of pointless movements here.
I'm sorry I believe you misunderstood me. The Pure Drive, which is by far the most popular racket by Babolat and can be used to represent the brand because the other Babolats are rather rare on tour. @gabe9873
playing smart is a key but you also need to play with relentless intensity, and lazer focus, always trying your best.
bought it played with it for a month , became desperate tried to sell it couldn't find a buyer
went back to playing it and I am starting to like it :)

not a problem; i get most of my equiptment from them. Very good place to buy ur tennis gear.

@gabe9873 Very true, but what can you do with no power at all? Im sure all the pros hit with immense power as well.
I myself is a Federer fan but to tell you the truth in reality, Andy Roddick has the best serve on tour.
nadal does that too...
i heard that it was to loosen up ur grip on ur racquet so that u dont hold it too tight and not injure urself
Does anyone else find that Roddick's forehand has a lot of spin and not enough power? It just doesn't seem like he's getting enough force on those shots.

its a breathing technique. it just gets more power like how you breath when youre weightlifting or sprinting
Was Stefanki a Former world No.1 before?
is it a babolat pure drive roddick + ?
@Deadeye287 I guess but I don't think El Aynaoui or Agassi were ever serving 130+ constantly or taking huge rips like Roddick. And as for Agassi, he was blessed by the tennis gods.
@futuramaishot yeah i agree.. but i guess he's resorting to this since his groundstrokes are of a lower level than those of most top 10 players
If anyone is going to try and replicate his serve ( I did...but only got it to 130 at my fastest) seriosuly consider some shoulder and wrist strengthining excercises. His serve WILL hurt your shoulder if you dont.... even HE still does the excercises.
Did I say you didn't hit a good ball with it? Nope, I never did. You're defending yourself against an attack that never happened. What a pro!
naah dude its not a habit nor so tht u dnt injure urself. Its so u feel u hv the same grip all the time. Cuz whn u hit the ball the racket moves out of place a bit. nd when holdin a racquet minimal things feel like huge difference so its to find your grip again nd feel comfortable wth it.
I'm liking his coach's backhand, but his forehand looks kinda funky more or less
dont you guys just love how babolat designed their new pure drive its pure sexiness lol
thats actually a really tough call to make, if u combine the fact of how fast roddick serves, and watchin his matches he places it very well, also since he can slice, and kick it anywhere with the same toss, not just blast it, and add the fact that federer seems to be able to just know where roddick serves on instinct which is why Roddick barely gets aces on Fed. he was playing with his left hand for a bit at 2:10
Andy has the most unorthodox serve on tour
omgggg his server is so nice...i wish mine was even near that :(
Ever notice how Roddick spins his racket in his hand after forehands some of the time? I wonder if he knows he does it?
best athlete
thats his coach, Larry Stefanki
Andy is Beast!
if you think so why aren't you in the atp?
I'm willing to say that Roddick would've won at least 4. I don't play "what if", but if we take a look:

i think that is the way he sets up his forehand for a hit.
thanks !
Hi Jasmine. PM me w/specifics please. Thx.
@istoryrighter true but at the very least it's sumthing he can look at to help him
Is Larry hitting with him?
I love how people laugh at him for only winning one slam! he has only been one of the top ten players for over 5 years, and done more in tennis then anyone on this post will ever do? sort it out people

this is the way i sometimes hit my backhand unless im trying to drive the ball
to whoever makes fun of andy roddick, start insulting him when you hold the record of fastest serve
@foul01 I never said the one-handed backhand would improve his game. I play with the pure storm tour. If your arm is getting tired you're not hitting the ball right ;)
hell no roddick's serve is so much better
OH MY GOD I can't believe it 55 aces? Damn. Are you sure? If I was Hewitt I would go crazy. Impressive stats though.
we all do stupid things when we hit, my friend opens his mouth real wide and it just cracks us up
Can you imagine if Roddick was even 6'5? It'd be unreturnable.
i can learn from this!
=)
of course u do
Yeah roddick is a fuckin tank! I havn't watched tennis for a long time though and I was wondering what rank he is now? I think about 6th in the world, am I right?

Ohh yeah. AO 07 is a definite. Fed's opponent was who? Gonzalez in the final, right? I think Roddick would've definitely beaten him, and any opponent Fed stopped along the way. Definitely.

too tight , great power , everyone know , still too tight
wow he can smash with his left hand
is he semi-western?
its amazing how he's so good but looks off balance in a lot of his shots
Poor leg game, never put any effort in it. That was his big weakness
yeah...
well i think Rafa played insanly well to win both the sf and the final, i honestly think Rafa would've beaten Andy in the final in 4 maybe 5 sets convincingly. This coming from a hardcore Roddick fan
why do people say @(person) when they can just reply?!
one thing that can be said, is sampras would get many more df then roddick does, dont forget that.
roddick has the fastest and i think at the moment Federer has the best placed serve in the whole world ;)
Nice shirt
LOL roddick's serve? Has everyone forgotten about Goran Ivanesevic's serve?
@lkjkhfggd Andy just doesn't hit a very pretty two-hander, it's looks awkward at times, that's probably why you think the two-hander looks weird on him.
he needs a good hitting partner, cause stefanki can't freaking rally with him
no, he is not, but you have to give credit where credit is due. If not for Federer, Roddick probably would have at least 2 more slams
@shilohandphoebe Not to mention he would still probably be number one in the world till this day and be about 40 million dollars richer.
its a myth that pro players can play with either hand and of course, only one side is better.
ppl who can play both sides tend to have a double handed backhand.

How in the hell does that comment relate in any way to my question?
yup....Sadly I'm left handed and he probably hit that overhead harder than any of mine.
man ur lucky i want it lol but i play with head liquidmetal prestige
I have his racquet ! ^^
While watching I noticed something. He looked distracted or something.
he is in way better shape
