I'm right there with you. I'll be a metal head till I die. My current favorite band is Fit For An Autopsy. I'll be 56 in a few months with no sign of slowing down. The only time I feel my age is when I see my two grandkids. Hoping I can get them to listen also!

I flash back to when I was 13 working with a pick axe digging a 6 ft deep hole through clay for an oil tank listening to Holy Diver endlessly on cassette. I have it burned in my brain as it kept going w auto flip function and all I did was just pressed play once. I miss that portable radio and Ronnie

DIO's music is stuff of legends. His vocals and song writing are like "thats a DIO song" without being told who was performing. His solo albums really brought the best out of him. He left Rainbow because Blackmore wanted to go more pop and DIO said goodbye to that one. A hard rocker till the end. RIP knowing millions of us still jam out to you music.

    Lyrics:
    We're a ship without a storm
    The cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah
    We're a laugh without a tear
    The hope without the fear
    We are coming home
    We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
    Is worth a lifetime
We're all born upon the cross
We're the throw before the toss
    You can release yourself
But the only way is down
    We don't come alone
We are fire we are stone
    We're the hand that writes
    Then quickly moves away
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    Two eyes from the east
It's the angel or the beast
    And the answer lies between
    The good and bad
    We search for the truth
We could die upon the tooth
But the thrill of just the chase
    Is worth the pain
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
    Is worth a lifetime
We're all born upon the cross
You know we're the throw before the toss
    You can release yourself
But the only way to go is down
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    See all we shine
    We're the last in
    We're the last in
    We're the last in
    We're the last in
    We're the last in
We're the first in line, oh
    We're a ship without a storm
We're the cold inside the warm
We're the laugh without a tear
We're the far without the near
    We're the last in line

Dio's voice barely cracking at 2:48 is one of my favorite subtleties of classic metal, and it's the kind of imperfection that pretty much all recorded music today would do well to leave in rather than to release such perfect sanitized tracks.

    • @PureBlood42
      @PureBlood42 3 года назад +23

I share in your appreciation of that subtle vocal 'crack' ... but just like a perfectly controlled guitar feedback, that 'imperfection' was completely intentional to add character and nuance to the effect of the song. Not calling you out or being a jerk, just clarifying that it wasn't a mistake or imperfection, whether or not yourself or readers of your post, may realize. The singer for Badlands was quite good at using that technique, as well.

You can tell he carefully considered how to sing every word--if the lyrics contained a word like "cry," he would plead the word out and bring a sudden sadness to the vocal performance for that one syllable. We are fire we are stone
We're the hand that writes and quickly moves away
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    Two eyes from the east
It's the angel or the beast
And the answer lies between the good and bad
    We search for the truth
We could die upon the tooth
But the thrill of just the chase is worth the pain
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    We're off to the witch
We may never, never, never come home
But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime
We're all born upon the cross
You know we're the throw before the toss
You can release yourself but the only way you go is down
We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line
    See how we shine
    We're the last in
    We're the last in

Many years later I was able to see it twice and despite its age I was not disappointed. In addition to his perfect concerts, he was a great professional, a great worker in the music industry. I was blessed to have seen his greatness in 1984 headlining a tour with Dokken. Having seen so many greats of rock and metal, that Dio concert in 1984 still stands out as one of the most special, most moving and most powerful I have seen. It started with that blood curdling scream and became some two hours of heavy metal art. No disrespect to the other greats, they are/were great too, but Dio was a rare gem who is so badly missed today. Bless him.

    The Last In Line"
We're the ship without a storm
    The cold without the warm
    Light inside the darkness
    That it needs, yeah
    We're a laugh without tear
    The hope without the fear
    We are coming, home
    We're off to the witch
We may never, never, never, come home

    You can release yourself

We are fire, we are stone

Every kid dreams of becoming a rock star. But even now in my 50's the only one I'd absolutely choose to come back as or have the same voice as, is RJD. He is so far above everyone else it's ridiculous. The perfect metal voice, which with absolute assurance I can say he will never be eclipsed by anyone else, in my life time at least. RIP Ronnie!

@@christianstruber4371 Did ya miss a question mark after ever? Anyway, we all have the best in our heads. They all have merit but DIO's voice is unmatched. Studies show that he should have lost his voice after his first belt - meaning, he is not normal. Nobody can sing like him and retain it. An example would be Derek Dick (Fish).

This song for me captures all of Ronnie James Dio's vocal talents. So soft to start with but with the booming metal vocals to finish. He was the Ben Webster vocalist of Rock music. Truly magnificent.
