HOW TO PLAY 2'S, 3'S, & 4'S - BASS DRUM VIDEO LESSON

  • 2's, 3's, and 4's are some of the first bass drum rudiments students learn when they're just starting out on the instrument. Because of this, younger players tend to breeze past them without squeezing as much value as they can out of them. I'm going to be taking you through some ways to get some more value out of these rudiments.

wish there was a snare channel like this

Snarescience is really good. A little dated, and the format is completely different, but the youtube channel and the website are of legend.

Matt Toole oh cool, thanks. Is there a tenor one too?

It's just quadscience as far as I know, but it's a lot smaller than snarescience when it comes to content. So after one goes through quadscience (I forgot to add, that the drumsciences haven't been posting in awhile.) you'll need to find another quad website, but it's still very informative and can keep you occupied for a long time.

Elliott, you should publish a book outlining technique and a learning sequence for bass line. All the resources you have made were badly needed and I think the marching community really needs more like this.

This is great stuff! Just a heads up... The eighth note stickings you have written in are incorrect on measure 5 of the 3's section, and you have eighth notes alternating instead of all on one hand in the 4's. I only say they're wrong because the video example makes more sense than what you have written down. This might be confusing for someone who is playing along with the music you displayed.

Elliott Duran Hey Elliott, I wanted to point out the same thing on the isolation primer for 4's. Otherwise, I appreciate all of the content and resources you've been putting out there for the bass drum community. These videos have been incredibly useful to me, both as a performer and as an educator. Keep it up! Looking forward to your next topic!

Conceptually, the explanation about the rhythm precision here during the first three minutes - is the very best i've ever seen.I'm just used to measure it relative to a quarter note, not an 1/8
And the terms in the very beginning are kinda off key, traditionally speaking. But, you get used to those quite fast. Bottom line: if you keep practicing with the precision principle as described here - your ear will become way more of a precision tool than a metronome is.

In the demonstration of "Two's w/out Brents" at the slower tempo your stroke changes when you play the two's versus the eighth note check. It changes from wrist only during the eighth notes to involving your elbow/shoulder during the two's. Also, it looks like there's tension in your shoulder/were it meets your chest when you play those two's (can see it in the way your shoulder moves).
I've seen this in plenty of marching bass drummers, and typically results in tennis elbow. Is there a reason for this change in technique or was it accidental?

When you played 2's w/o Brents the second time, you rushed the last line pretty badly. But you are still a god a bass. I'm 15 and I'm a freshman in my drum line and I'm already the best one out of all the seniors and juniors just because i practice these types of exercises. Keep up the good work.
