- Sea of Stars is a stellar throwback that appeals to fans like me who love 16-bit RPGs, but it also functions as an excellent entry point. Annoyances that hindered early games that inspired Sea of Stars are nowhere to be seen. Simple actions like moving around the world feel great, the story picks up quickly, and farming experience is effectively unnecessary. It all leads to a smooth, consistently thrilling adventure with fun combat, all in a gorgeous and inviting world. Thanks for watching our Sea of Stars review.

Looking forward to playing it tomorrow. I've been excited to play since it was announced and happy to see it looks like it's holding expectations. Will have to read the review to see what lost it 1 point.
It didn't have a druid bear sex minigame.
I'm seeing so many 9/10s, with almost nothing to complain about. It actually feels forced to "find something bad". I'm not saying its a 10/10 but just curious to see so many glowing reviews, 9/10 "Almost Masterpiece".
Yeah it seems the line between 9 and 10 isn’t about flaws anymore and rather the execution of the vision. 10 out of 10 games should blow you out of the water. That being said I am beyond excited to get my hands on this game
They did the same with Nier Automata and many other games. Unless it’s some huge AAA marketed game it’s hard to get a 10 for whatever reason. But buy and enjoy. After enjoying the messenger. I knew this would be good
Well luckily no game can be a 10/10 cause there will always be something to improve, or a choice you didn't like, so 9 is pretty damn nice. Only complaint I heard was when you backtrack, you can't blow through the enemies cause of the hit mechanics, but um this guy just showed himself 1 shotting 1 enemy and then taking out 2 with 1 crazy boomerang so that single complaint I heard has been invalidated 😂
I’ve watched complaints about the story, characters and pacing but they seem to be in a minority.
There ARE some real flaws - I love the game but no real map, no quest reminders and no Story log are issues for me.
The best compliment I can give it is I usually can’t get away with this style of game at all but I am loving this. I admit I only tried it as it was a free game with the PS Plus membership but so glad I did. I am a complete beginner on this type of game though so die hard fans of the genre may not be quite as enamoured. It just looks and sounds fantastic on the PS5 - the artwork is well, a work of art. Very impressive and the music is great. Anyway I’m 10 hours in and cooking up yet another hearty stew.

Hope the story is as compelling as Chained Echoes, Rise of the Third Power, or CrossCode. Those games I consider the apex of storytelling for indie RPGs.

I was a Kickstarter backer, the demo was great. Can't wait to play this on my ROG Ally.
Looks like a strong influence would have been Golden Sun, especially the Lost Age with its world exploration in a ship.
More like chrono trigger and Mario rpg
Still one of the best rpgs I have played. Love the expansion to the djinn line up.

Chained echoes is amazing.
Chained Echoes was so overrated. The plot got bland and the writing was stiff. It desperately needed different facial animations during conversations. You'd have some emotional moments and all the characters are just: 😐
It's a good game, but it definitely could benefit from a special edition where they fine tune things. The combat system was really good though.
Truth. It’s the only (relatively) recent release I’ve wondered about, RPG or otherwise. Chained Echoes really was an all-timer and reminded me why I love not just the genre but the medium as a whole.
So yeah, if Sea of Stars can do even half of what CE pulled off it’ll be a win. But regardless of any comparisons, SoS (just by itself) already looks and sounds stunning, and I’m as hyped as I can be for the 29th.
Chained Echoes soundtrack caught me by surprise.
Try Rise of the Third Power. It's an extremely underappreciated RPG. Compelling story, great characters, and meaningful side quest, etc. It's a 9 to me.

This is the kind of game I want to play on handheld console mostly with my Switch. I have PS Plus but it’s cheap on the switch, anyway, and looks just as good.

Now that my BG3 save file finally crapped out in act 3, I think I might play something a lot more stable. Such as this throw back rpg. 😊

BG3 was fantastic but I too felt some parts of act 3 were not complete or poorer quality than the first two acts.

A great counter-argument to the HD/2D style that Square Enix is obsessed with... I much prefer the look of both this and Eastward.

I heard the combat is its weak spot, which is interesting since you gushed about it.
Where'd you hear that? It's turn based so that's highly unlikely.
I think people complained in the demo about it not giving enough feedback for blocking attacks but they apparently fixed that since so it shouldn’t be an issue anymore
Id say the combat is the strong point rather, I think people are complaining about the lack of tutorials about the combat in the demo
@@heagridswagerI figured the timed button presses, but what confused me was that regular attacks restore mana kind of like a Diablo 3/4 style "resource generator" and "resource spender" system. And that when weaknesses are shown that enemies are defending or charging up their attacks. Overall, once I figured it out the boss in the demo was very satisfying to take down.

Sad to hear the story is a bit predictable but gonna give it a shot nonetheless. The demo was really engaging.
A well done predictable story of Good vs. Evil is way better and more enjoyable than many God-knows-what stories some games trying to tell, Elden ring, Death stranding, and all those philosophical forgatbel stories

If you think Death Stranding, which hammers home it’s themes about a million times in everything from the obviously symbolic names to characters flat out explaining the major motifs, is unpredictable or complex then you might just be illiterate.
Maybe i didn't understand correctly, pardon my english, but 25h for finishing the story isn't it too short ?
It looks like a really good game! Some of the art direction choices look like "It's there cause it looks cool", instead of feeling lived-in and real. But good on them for making something so cool

I heard that we will be blown away by the swinging, hopefully that’s true.
The demo almost put me to sleep. Combat and exploration seems satisfying enough but the story and characters are boring. Maybe actual voice acting would have helped.
Had high hopes for this but I’m pretty disappointed. It’s just not for me. Seems like it would be a solid game to buy for my 8yr old nephew though.

Wait. Farming exp is essentially unnecessary?! I'm out. I hate this new Chained Echoes trend where grinding exp is unnecessary. That's one of the main reasons I play jrpgs! Why would you take away such an essential part of jrpgs? Because you have ADHD and can't stand to build exp? I was really looking forward to this game 😥.

For a game thats inspired by Chrono Trigger they totally missed the two main things that made Chrono Trigger amazing, interesting varied main characters and a great story. Instead they decided to go with boring generic looking main characters and a lacklustre story.

How do you know? the game isn't out yet. Also being inspired by something doesn't mean that the focus needs to be the same. The Devs clearly stated that they are doing their own thing whilst paying homage to the classics. What a silly comment!
I hate that they added timed button clicks, i like my turn based games to be turn based and not use real time mechanics.

Yeah, I’m not too keen on that, to be honest. A lot of my comfort games are turn based games where I can relax and chill in the combat and still enjoy them. I’m still going to get it, though, as it’s looks to be high quality.
