Good video Jonathan. The principles you explain came easy, but trying to get a customer who wants dark shirts with white ink on the same page can be challenging. Art looks awesome!
Thank you! That is true. Customers are not always easy to handle with artwork. But it's our jobs as professionals in our fields to educate the customer and use our sales skills to sell a product that makes the customer very happy while not making you look bad with poor art. An easier way to explain it is, when printing on dark shirts you need to invert the artwork. In Photoshop, Image/Mode/Invert. Hope that helps someone. Thanks Jon for the great job.
Yeah this one may be a little confusing if you do not pay close attention. I thought I displayed the end results of the film either piece of art well in AI there but I guess you could miss that. I don't use Photoshop though. But it's the same thing for AI. Just select object. Drop down menu:edit. Drop down: edit colors. Select: invert colors. Thanks for watching. Like all those little intricate parts of the motor inside the circle how did you get all of the black lining to be nice and sharp and clear so when you burn an image there is no distortion

If I understand you correctly, yes. You can do that but usually we create 2 screens for printing white or black garments so as to keep the set up and labor to a minimum and it also will keep the print feeling thinner. I am new to editing for the positives, how can i remove the original outline of the image i reversed? You know cause if you invert it, it will become a one whole black with the design inside of it, how can i get the design only out of it?mthank you sir

for complicated line art that doesn't cooperate with this method I just do an offset path of .05 of the whole line work and merge/unite with white fill. make two layers, select white fill and place underneath, Select black line work paste in front on another layer then go to pathfinder and alt-click minus front and expand. this will leave a white outline around all the artwork. works great for tattoo style artwork. If you are unsure if you need to invert colors or not just do a simple mock-up. make a layer of what the shirt color will be and select your artwork and change colors to see what looks best. on white or light shirts, black outlines look good. on black and dark shirts white outlines don't look so good, so the idea is to invert it so you're left with a white fill and the dark color of the shirt will make out the outlines.

I was afraid of that... LOL. It was hard to explain and even watching it I feel I am unsure of how explain it any better. That may be because I am not an Illustrator expert ;) I probably will make a different video version of this same concept. In the meantime try watching it again and listen closely to what I am saying. You should be able to see the differences in the way they print. CatspitProductions Just remember everything that is black on the film positive will be the color of the ink you are printing. So if you want the inside of the skull to print white on the black shirt the inside needs to print black on your film positive. On a white shirt, the shirt will be the inside of the skull and you need the outline ,eyes and any other detail to print black on your film positive. Everything black on the film will block the emulsion from curing and the emulsion will wash away leaving the areas for ink to pass through and onto the shirt.
WhiteyGraphics Yes and if you print black line art in white in on a black garment it will look funny. Normal positive images with lines and commonly known shaded areas as with skulls will look like a negative when printed in white ink on black garments. Okay so I was trying to have this video ready for this morning. But Mondays are crazy and I was very busy. Because of the upcoming Christmas Holiday I decided to upload anyway to stay on schedule. How are you doing buddy I love your videos I am a big supporter. If you have time to answer my question my problem is so I get an image off the Internet but it's never crisp and clean. Go away I go in and clean up in image takes forever I literally will take the marker icon and go in and color all of the black areas of an image make sure all the edges are nice and all the pixels are filled in so it is crisp and clean. Then I will take the eraser option and go around and clean up all the edges of everything and it just takes forever is there a way to make in image nice in crisp and all of the colors nice and bold. I've tried the unsharpened mask option I've tried the sharpen option I have tried re sizing in doing more dots per square inch and none of that shit works worth a dam

You cannot recreate information where it does not exist. So low res files are worthless. You need to find better files of 1 meg or bigger and a big canvas size. A JPEG that is 125x125 and 27K is junk and cannot be used. But a tiff that is 1.5 megs and 1000x1000 could be auto traced in Illustrator with decent results. Thanks for watching. Why not just show a finished white shirt and a finished black shirt? That way the printed portion should be obvious. Then show how the Illustrator art has to change to produce those results. The current explanation requires too much visualization for me. I have a lot of experience with vector art but I am used to white/light substrates and film negatives. It seems like what you're trying to say is important but it's still fuzzy to me.
Sorry about that, I was trying to show the function of inversion in AI really. In the video I show you how each version of the art will print. I show that twice actually. When I place the art over the black background I am showing one of the ways the art will print depending on whether or not you invert it. Basically we're using the black of the tee shirt to create the positive black line work we are used to seeing normally. I'll do a follow up video for this with some printed examples when I have more time. I'll have to get some white tees too... LOL. I only stock black ;)
