You could have made a 1200dpi BITMAP without the text, then open the file in Illustrator and add the text. You'll get clean vector lettering with high quality halftones. That a tip for those who can't afford a RIP.
That's what I just did. You actually don't even need to do it in illustrator, I did it all in photoshop. I made a 300dpi bitmap halftone of an image, saved it, then reopened it (it stayed as a halftone image but I could now switch to RGB or whatever other image mode so the text isn't fuzzy) and just used the text tool to put new text over it and added a logo I had a vector file of. The logo and text were completely sharp and the halftone dots were so small you couldn't even tell if they were perfectly round or not. I basically got the same result you would get from using RIP software.
Hey! I’m responding to an old comment, but that’s what I was wondering the whole time I was watching the video. I had an “huh??” face the whole time. Wtf would I pay for a rip software if it’s really all about dpi?? On the gradient rolloff, controlling the greys using levels, curves, layer masking and a soft brush should give similar results. I don’t understand the benefits unless you’re inexperienced in editing? 🤷🏻♀️
Bitmap is the best quality you'll ever have for a halftone. I've been a film separator for 25 years, and I've always used the setting in Photoshop from 1200 to 1800 dpi. We used a scanner called a leaf, that has been known to go to 2540 dpi bitmap. We received New York City's first digital film output printer at Speed Graphics, and still kept the Agfa's, since the bitmap output was incomparably crisp to the highest quality. I am also 100% sure that any vector image will sit comfortably at 1200 to 1800 dpi. I am also sure that Photoshop has black density settings that can be accessed from profiles, or if one has the time, set up custom profiles for certain clients, and jobs.
+Ryonet You're very welcome for this communication/interaction. As an ongoing service to others I believe it's our responsibility to give clear, and concise information to The Graphic Arts community.
@@yashkshirsagar3273 The two printers you should consider that provide dense blacks for positive screen outputs are the Epson Artisan 1430 and the Canon Pixma ix6820. The Epson 1430 comes with rip software and cost around $1,600 while the Canon ix6820 offers higher resolution and costs around $250 - $400. Some screen printing shops consider the Epson Artisan 1430 as industry standard, but seriously use your own judgment.

Hi Ryan just wondering why my printer is continuously spitting out blank pages when I use accurip, I'm using a work force 2510. it is working fine until I use accurip, I have been using the place and not open.
The only think do must to do is divided of your count mesh thread by 3 and you get your HALFTONE screen in lpi. I your case 110 divided by 3 is equal to about 35 lpi (lines per inch) HALFTONE...

You really don't need rip software folks. This is a simple advertisement masquerading as a tutorial. Create a high resolution image, at twice real scale (if printing 8x10 create a 16x20 image). Anything around 300dpi will be fine. Now... either use the Photoshop or Gimp halftone filter or render it as a halftone bitmap as shown in the video. Save your image file. Open a new canvas (same size/dpi as before). Paste your halftone image. Add text. Cleanup speckles/random pixels as needed around your pasted image. Print it. Rip software is only worth it if you're running batch conversions, have low skill staff handling transparency printing or your dealing with 6+ colour prints at large format. If the latter then I'd suggest you look at other methods to screen anyway... unless they're high profit art prints. Nothing to gain from this comment. Hi SIr! i would like to ask, is your epson printer an inkjet printer? what kind of film you use upon printing? does it blot upon printing on that transparent film? i am from philippines and i've tried printing on a tracing paper on inkjet printer but the ink fades away when i've tried to touch it. thank you so much!
This is definitely an inkjet printer, and for screen printing purposes it is best to print on a transparency film :) Here is some for example: www.screenprinting.com/cat/inkjet-waterproof-films
How do you screen print on different colors?? I'm new on this and want to start a t shirt business and heard screen printing was really good , would give me some advice it would be so much appreciated.

Hello sir, can i ask what was that transparent medium you printed on as your positive? also, what kind of ink is used in cmyk printing? is it plastisol or water based? thanks
Great questions! That transparency is a waterproof film used primarily by screen printers for creating their films. It can be found here: www.screenprinting.com/rite-film-premium-positive-waterproof-film-100-pack-13x19 As for CMYK, this can be both water based or plastisol, but it is primarily a plastisol print. Happy Friday, @Blessed Clothing. There's a handful of variables. Couple things i would look at right off the bat. 1. how is you image colored in your art software? Is 100% of color or solid Pantone color? 2. When you were in your print dialogue, what were you seeing as far as what was going to print out? pint preview can help you see what in the image is still colored w/ CMYK. 3. Are you using the RIP or going straight to the printer? This video uses a RIP called Accu-rip. If set up correctly, when you print your design you should see in your printer options a printer called "accurip to 3270" or "accurip to *whatever your printer is". You need to select that printer to take advantage of the rip properties. Hope this helps!
Anyone know the options you need to check for the print to come out much darker ? i can still thru the black, its sucks my exposures could be much better if i knew how to get the damn ink to go darker , any help would be great. Also, i been trying half tone images and add Text but the time turns back into a sold once i ad it to another document that i try to add text to so its crisp.
Hey there! For halftones, we would suggest using a 230 mesh screen or higher so that you can get the proper detail out of your halftones. Water based inks work best with halftones given their viscosity, so our Green Galaxy line would work perfectly!
I have been considering getting Acurip software however I use Photoshop I don't have illustrator will I have the same problems with the vector text even with Acurip?
It really depends on what problems you're seeing. Feel free to give us a call or live chat with us about what you're seeing. We're always happy to help you troubleshoot! :) 800-314-6390 messenger.providesupport.com/messenger/ryonet.html

Every time I print thur Accurip for spot colors the design on the films have lines. I have put dpi at 50,55,60. No matter what I do it has lines and does not wash totally out. Any idea's on how to stop this?
+Christie Gilmore We have seen this issue before. When was the last time you checked your ink cartridge? This is usually a symptom of very low ink or an ink cartridge that has become clogged. Thanks for watching! :)
Hi, I just received as a gift a 54 mesh. Goal is a metal t-shirt with halftone. I'll set res. to 300 and image width to 8,5 inches (A4 size positive). Does this mean I'll have to set LPI to 5,4? It's gonna look pretty rough... Thanks in advance!
This might be a silly question, but I thought the image needed to be black in order for it to burn onto the screen? The image you have is more grey yet it came out perfect, just need help understand :) Thanks.
The grey you see are the halftones discussed in this video - this creates a greyscale affect, a gradient like the sunset,, if you will. If you need a solid image with no gradient, then the darkest black possible is necessary. This gives you a solid printable area.
I have photoshop and illustrator. I will hopefully buy a rip down the line. But say I am just doing a cartoon design. Not a simulated process. Like Bart Simpson for example. I dont need to bitmap or add halftones, right? I can just do my color seps, export to illustrator. and print. Or do I need to manually add halftones or buy a rip before I print anything.
If you have any greyscale elements - tones of color or areas that are not 100% solid - you need a way to create halftones. After that - you just need to make sure your printer can create a film that stops UV light so you can properly expose your screen. Rip software automatically does all of that.

I'm just a starter screen printer and always watching your you tube video, and it helps me a lots, So what is your advice? I see lots important of photo shop program but I have a little knowledge on computer. your advise please!!
+Gasolo Salima Thank you so much for watching! A lot of the screen printing process can be outsourced until you're more attuned to each step. If you are already printing, I would recommend taking a class on graphic design to get some basics in order. There are lots of great sites in addition to RUclips for this, like Lynda.com :) As for shipping to New Zealand, we currently have minimum order requirements for international customers. Please shoot me an email at international@ryonet.com and we will get you the info you need :)
We spent huge money on Adobe Creative Suite, $500 for Accurip really seems like it might be overkill. Is there a different approach to Rip that can be accomplished from Adobe CS?
There is no other approach this easy! : ) In terms of halftones, Accurip does all the work for you! And it generates perfectly. It pays for itself 10 times over in the time you save. You can see the difference in this video ; )
Corel Draw handles this so easier. It handles Vector and Bitmap with ease. With accurip you cannot see or edit the final output or even see it before going to print. If you want to make it even more simple, use Simple Seps with Corel. The end results are far superior to Adobe with far less spent than Accurip.
I can't get my epson 1430 to print at all, it acts like it's going threw the process, acknowledges it in accu rip black pearl that it printed it, but no ink comes out at all, I'm so stumped on it.
good morning @C D. For the screen print application, halftones are a series of dots that range in size to create a gradient look in the image. helps create depth in the design. Not all designs will be half-toned. Spot color designs are solid, think text and solid images and logos. Hope that helps!
+Nattapon Lohajoti No specific emulsion is needed to create half tones. However when printing, your screen mesh is very important. The higher your mesh count, the more fine detail you will be able to retain in your prints. 230 mesh is a great middle ground for retaining half tone detail and still getting a good amount of ink through the screen. If you're looking to print higher detail, like photography quality, you might want to use a 300 mesh and think of thinning your ink. Thanks for watching.
Don't use rip. Just work large scale in Photoshop and use the halftone bmp setting or halftone filter. The cracked edges and stray pixels in the vid are down to no prep to the image, no post-processing and working at low resolution.
With a rip software, this will be automated. Any colors will be separated into the 4 cmyk channels. As for manually doing this, unfortunately, we don't have a video on this. There should be videos in youtube on how to manually create halftones in Photoshop :)
Don't worry I am 57 and i don't believe this guy Ryan was teenage r back in 2000 in I am 14 years of experience in that time I think Ryan have a Lucky Star ... good for him...
I think you've gotten this backward. A bitmap is not a low quality image, it's a lossless, uncompressed image format. It's neither high nor low quality, it is exactly what you tell it to be.
ATTENTION!!! All their HALFTONES are so excellent and crisp how the highest print output YOUR PRINTER SUPPORTS IT... POINT What I'm saying is that if your inkjet printer has 1400 dpi max... Then make your film output (halftone screen especially) at 1400 dpi.... Not "difficult"
+Janet Diaz This is a downloadable piece of software found at softwareforscreenprinters.com. You can trial it there and let us know if you like it! Halftones and dark prints have never been easier :)
False advertising. We can do vector text in Photoshop. Dishonest and disgraceful product placement. Why not get 1200DPI? Text in different layer? Adjust layer a little bit? Try to sell overprice RIP software when it is doable in Photoshop. All RIP software do the same thing - convert your image bitmap.
By the way Photoshop/Illustrator CS2 are "free"in whit that programs do you must ready to make all yours design and arts and do HALFTONE whit out problem for the rest of your LIFE. Period.
Art Is subjective I actually like the jagged edge font and the pic the way it turned out. I don’t mind perfection but I also like different. Just went and looked at how much the accurate cost way too expensive thank God I don’t mind the Photoshop way
It's not about which style you prefer or is it too expensive/inexpensive. It's about having (paying for) an option to make it 'perfect' if you need it.
Ryonet thanks , i have a yellow tinted aluminum screen , but i don't know the mesh count . its way tighter than my 110 screen so hopefully it works lol
+Ricky Aubrey Raster or Vector. The printer/artist should be able to apply a half tone to a vector piece of art if that’s the desired effect. A raster piece of art will already be a halftone image.

Hey Ryan what's the best mesh for halftones ? And ink ? I have been using your green galaxy for the nice soft feel . THANKS IN ADVANCED .
Hey there! For halftones, we would suggest using a 230 mesh screen or higher so that you can get the proper detail out of your halftones. Water based inks work best with halftones given their viscosity, so our Green Galaxy line would work perfectly!
What type of printer is this
hi @Trent Patterson, this was the Epson 1430. no longer in production...

thank you!!!
could i use 120 or 160 mesh for halftones and green galaxy inks ?
Absolutely! I would recommend keeping the mesh on the higher end though since water based inks are generally less thick.
What is the model of that printer??
Leonardo Rodriguez the printer in the video is an epson 1430.
Ryonet Im reading the desciption of that printer it says is an inkjet printer. It should be lasser rigth?? I mean to be able to print in that Kind of paper (acetate)
nope, inkjet is the best kind of printer to print on transparent film. =)
What kind of emulsion is needed?
hi whats 45 frequency inch in cm?
Quick question; What kind of film do you use? Polyester film?
Every time I print thur Accurip for spot colors the design on the films have lines. I have put dpi at 50,55,60. No matter what I do it has lines and does not wash totally out. Any idea's on how to stop this?
+Christie Gilmore We have seen this issue before. When was the last time you checked your ink cartridge? This is usually a symptom of very low ink or an ink cartridge that has become clogged. Thanks for watching! :)
How do u check to see if an ink cartridge has clogged? This ink is expensive so I need to to use all of it.
Thanks
mk
Hi, I just received as a gift a 54 mesh. Goal is a metal t-shirt with halftone. I'll set res. to 300 and image width to 8,5 inches (A4 size positive). Does this mean I'll have to set LPI to 5,4? It's gonna look pretty rough... Thanks in advance!
Just do the spot color on seperate layer and increase PPI to 1200 and it gives you same as RIP.
how?
*Different strokes for different folks? LOL Ryan!* Ryonet
***** No pun intended
How to make this frame set machine? or where I can get it?
Inside Bangladesh
We currently do not ship to Bangladesh for orders less than $5000.
How much a full set of Screen Print set?
Hey Ataur,
Are you looking to buy a press or the Accurip software?
This might be a silly question, but I thought the image needed to be black in order for it to burn onto the screen? The image you have is more grey yet it came out perfect, just need help understand :) Thanks.
The grey you see are the halftones discussed in this video - this creates a greyscale affect, a gradient like the sunset,, if you will. If you need a solid image with no gradient, then the darkest black possible is necessary. This gives you a solid printable area.
Good Video
what # the screen you use for haltone
Hi! When I try to download a trial from your web-site there is no epson L1800 model in the dropdown menu. What model do I choose correctly? 1410 maybe? My request through the contact form gives no answer :(
+Leonid Matisov thank you for asking! I do believe that printer is compatible with AccuRIP. Please head over to the manufacturer's site for a free download :)
www.softwareforscreenprinters.com
hi ryan, does accurip works on Epson L1300 and L1800?
Nathan Villafuerte It does work on both :)
You could clean the bitmap.
Exactly! Or generate the halftone in in one of the other 3 methods Photoshop allows.
Hell, even cleaning the original image beforehand would sort it. Shill vid to the core 🤦♂️
Cool
Awesome
Thanks for watching! :)
and how about the mesh you use?? is it 1200 or 1000 or 800??
+zack haikal In the video he mentioned it was a 305 mesh count to capture the high detail. These are currently on sale at screenprinting.com, check it out: www.screenprinting.com/aluminum-screen-with-305-yellow-mesh-20x24
Thanks brother..
could you not just add in the text after you've bitmapped?
what printer?
+Gasolo Salima Most Epson Inkjet printers will work great. We recommend the 1430, 4900, P800, and T3270! Let me know if we can help with anything at all!
Ok! thanks, I was trying to order some mesh, heat press transfer paper on your site but I can't ,don't Y? I'm here In New Zealand..
There are lots of great sites in addition to RUclips for this, like Lynda.com :)
As for shipping to New Zealand, we currently have minimum order requirements for international customers. Please shoot me an email at international@ryonet.com and we will get you the info you need :)
Thank you bro, i'll see eh and tell you,but thanks again for your help
We spent huge money on Adobe Creative Suite, $500 for Accurip really
seems like it might be overkill. Is there a different approach to Rip that can be accomplished from Adobe CS?
There is no other approach this easy! : ) In terms of halftones, Accurip does all the work for you! And it generates perfectly. It pays for itself 10 times over in the time you save. You can see the difference in this video ; )
Mind blown!
KABLAM!!! Sorry, should we put a mind blowing disclaimer in the beginning of the vid? ; )
Hey man, just put output dpi to 600 and it will be like a accu rip. : )
+Vladimir Nesic Cool! Thanks for watching!
I tried that and it looks the same how do i get clean dots in photoshop :(
Corel Draw handles this so easier.
Hey there! Please send this information to success@ryonet.com, or give us a call at 800-314-6390 and we will help you get this figured out!
Forgive my ignorance. What is a half tone.?.
Do all computer designs need to be converted to half tone
good morning @C D. For the screen print application, halftones are a series of dots that range in size to create a gradient look in the image. helps create depth in the design. Not all designs will be half-toned. Spot color designs are solid, think text and solid images and logos. Hope that helps!
hi is there a way/what's the best app to RIP images in iOS (ipad/iphone) without illustrator/photoshop?
Hey Laura, Good question! At the moment, we don't have a rip software that will work on mobile.
how do I do this using corel draw?
bcwp1989 Only if the image is a bitmap, if its vector then Accurip will do it
what mesh number to use for this kind of art work? and since it very fine detail do i need specific kind of emulsion and how to washed
I'm using accurip but the image is pretty dark, when I rip the image the detail is not coming out clean. Do dark images give you bad halftones?
Don't use rip. Just work large scale in Photoshop and use the halftone bmp setting or halftone filter.
The cracked edges and stray pixels in the vid are down to no prep to the image, no post-processing and working at low resolution.
WOW
+nhas kiakan Wooooh!
now tell me how to use this for CMYK please
Hi Holly! Check out this video! ruclips.net/video/jQ8qHMELIp4/видео.html
good 😉
how do you create halftone by only using photoshop?
With a rip software, this will be automated. Any colors will be separated into the 4 cmyk channels. As for manually doing this, unfortunately, we don't have a video on this. There should be videos in youtube on how to manually create halftones in Photoshop :)
OMG I'm 51 and have been printing since I was 17 and this was just almost gibberish to me. I'm too freaking old.
Don't worry I am 57 and i don't believe this guy Ryan was teenage r back in 2000 in I am 14 years of experience in that time I think Ryan have a Lucky Star ... good for him...
👌
I think you've gotten this backward. A bitmap is not a low quality image, it's a lossless, uncompressed image format. It's neither high nor low quality, it is exactly what you tell it to be.
ATTENTION!!! All their HALFTONES are so excellent and crisp how the highest print output YOUR PRINTER SUPPORTS IT...
POINT
What I'm saying is that if your inkjet printer has 1400 dpi max... Then make your film output (halftone screen especially) at 1400 dpi.... Not "difficult"
you can actually get away with putting 1200 dpi in photoshop.
So this is a Plugin ???
+Janet Diaz This is a downloadable piece of software found at softwareforscreenprinters.com. You can trial it there and let us know if you like it! Halftones and dark prints have never been easier :)
RIPPP ANND TEAR !!!!
Чётко
DIO BOIA!
Period.
“Make your life easier “ lol
I think it's incorrect to say that a bitmap is worse quality than a jpeg.
+matt watson yup, bitmap is the best you can get of a compressed image format
Matt you are correct. Bitmap is higher quality than JPEG. What he says in the video is incorrect.
It's about having (paying for) an option to make it 'perfect' if you need it.
almost the same.
cant believe you'd wear that kickass tee while printing! you're gonna ruin it!!
Gotta show it off 👍
I love finding out I need to spend MORE money. : (
Nice vid shame about the annoying music.
A BMP file is NOT worse quality than a JPG!!! Bitmap images are in a lossless format whereas JPG images are a lossy format.
Ive met you ryan and I know youre not a bad guy but this video is straight up bogus and you know it. This is extremely disappointing to see.
Not everything needs a musical accompaniment. So stressful to watch. Be much better if you spoke without the music competing with your narration.
could i print halftones using a 110 mesh screen ?
Large ones, yes, but smaller halftones require a higher mesh count :)
Ryonet thanks , i have a yellow tinted aluminum screen , but i don't know the mesh count . its way tighter than my 110 screen so hopefully it works lol
Haha yellow mesh is usually 200 or higher, so that should be better :)
My screenprinter has rip software. What kind of artwork can i give him so that the majority of the Art results and halftones and not all spot colors.
+Ricky Aubrey Raster or Vector. The printer/artist should be able to apply a half tone to a vector piece of art if that’s the desired effect. A raster piece of art will already be a halftone image.
