Thanks for sharing your "best of the year" picks. For me, my favorite disc of the year is the restored 1953 "Invaders From Mars." My 14-year old daughter started laughing when she saw me getting teary-eyed from the impact of seeing a film from my childhood again. She did have to admit that watching the movie was like having a fever dream and the ending haunted her for days. The love and care that went into restoring the film is astonishing. It brought out the incredible sense of wonder and vision that the filmmakers intended.
Excellent rundown! Great no-edit flow, great conversation. Really enjoyed it (as always). A lot here I'm reminded of that I need to make sure stays on my to-get list.
SHAWSCOPE Box Set and POLICE STORY TRILOGY and A-TEAM are the big wins for me this year. I comment a lot. Love the channel. You and I share a lot of *specific* interests.
That was genuinely a great vid thank you! Also been a pleasure watching you in 22. The affect Robin Hood prince of thieves had on you is exactly the affect Goodfellas had on me back in the day, couldn’t have put it any better myself. Thanks 👍🏻
Thanks for the wealth of information on all things media Heath! Just picked up the Tom Petty Fillmore set. Got the Untouchables on 4k and loved it. We used to live in Chicago and would see the tour bus come by our apartment every two hours. Looking forward to your review. Happy New Year
It's a wonderful time to be a physical media collector. Popularity is at an all-time high and I absolutely love it. There is so much variety to choose from, even if the physical media selection itself is shrinking when it comes to retail stores. That has allowed online sites to expand and flourish as a result. Otherwise, thanks, as always Heath for another enjoyable and informative video! I really appreciate the hard work! Keep it up! God bless and stay safe!
Not being at home, have to go by memory. Blue Hawaii 4k, Highlander 4k, Roadhouse 4k, Lost Boys 4k and Fright Night 4k. The 50th Anniversary Atari game is a fun walk down memory lane.
Good stuff. I couldn’t make a list like his because what I get in the year is often a few or more years old and I don’t keep track. I rarely pre-order or go out of my way to get something right away (and when I do it’s usually in store with cash). I did get that 4K of “Double Indemnity” though.
You hit upon most of them I would include. Not mentioned would be the Sony Pictures Classics 30th Anniversary collection, Star Trek 1-6 4K set, the VSU release of Road House, VS continued support of Cynthia Rothrock films with Righting Wrongs and Sworn to Justice, Heavy Metal in 4k and Criterion's release of Arsenic and Old Lace.
Heath, I enjoy your “best of the year” lists. You really are becoming a film historian who gives us so much insight and motivates us physical media fans to explore new genres. Like Neo Film Neor and Italian gothics. Keep up the great work. On another note, I grabbed Untouchables 4K that includes the Blu Ray and DVD at Walmart for the same price for those who want all the formats.
The Six Million Dollar Man set is good and all but has a major flaw that I've never seen anyone commenting on. Disc 6 of season 1 consists of only repeated chapters from earlier in the season. So there's several chapters missing! Shout! should see to send replacement Blu-Rays to the buyers. But no they haven't done so. Wow 2021 was crazy for physical media and I thought it couldn't be topped and 2022 came along. 2022 has been unbelievable for horror releases both in theaters and disc. Great haul bro very neat good showing and cool video Heath! I hope you have a happy and prosperous New Year 2023 bro!🎉
@@CerealAtMidnight all of them! Watch season 1 and when you get to disc 6 you'll begin seeing a repeated from earlier discs. Then another and another. I don't know if it's certain sets only or all of them but I advice collectors to check it out. Maybe if enough people complain Shout! will send a corrected disc 6. Thank God I have the DVD version which is fine no mistakes. I also have a foreign Spanish version that's also complete and correct. Anyway check it out Heath!👍
Cool video Heath. Got me to watch Vanilla Fudge on Ed Sullivan. SWEET. My top 5 no order. 1)Godfather deluxe. 2) BFI Get Carter 3) UK Casablanca deluxe 4) Second Sight Drive 5) UK Highlander box set. Want to see WB give my favorite noire Maltese Falcon given the Deluxe treatment.
Great year-end video Heath! Am I correct in assuming the blu-ray discs that came with the Robin Hood 4K are region B since that was an Arrow UK release? Thanks! Happy New Year!
For the past two or three years at least, you've said this was the best year for physical media yet and it couldn't get any better! I wonder what next year will bring...? :)
Saw 50 Ft. Woman in theater when I was about 12 I believe in the 1960s, and I remember that being the first movie or t.v. show where I really and I mean really noticed the female form as nice to watch:)
Gotta disagree with you on the streamlined Star Trek disc release. I got the Complete Adventure of ST1 (for all versions of The Motion Pic), and then got the individual releases of ST2 through ST6 for those beautiful individual slipcovers with the original artwork. Looks beautiful on the shelf.
Not my cup of tea. There are a few of those movies I'd like to have, but those big box sets like that one and the Columbia Classics 4K collections are not my thing. They're also priced outrageously.
These are the releases that got me excited Belle Real genius Blue Hawaii Mystery men Elf Top gun Maverick Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure Red dawn The lost city 1776 Canadian bacon
Neo-noir doesn’t have much to do with when the film was released - at least for those in film studies. It has more to do with the journey of the characters. Classic noir typically centers around the hero revealing and sometimes being caught up in an external corruption then usually bringing it to justice (eg the big heat). Neo-noir focuses on characters that are usually trying to reveal the corruption or an aliment within themselves (eg memento, dark city etc). There are other factors of course and neo-noir is a modern restyling of noir etc but it is not simply reducible to time period.
There are so many elements at play in classical and Neo-noir that trying to define it feels a bit like trying to classify the indefinable. As many books as I've read on the subject, there's little consensus, especially in the academic world, but it amuses me when noir comes up in my videos and ignites the debate anew. However, please rest assured that I agree with much of your assessment of Neo-noir, and use the dates (1958 specifically) more as a shorthand to expedite the conversation so as to avoid the exact quagmire that conversations such as this inevitably create.
Hey man, not sure if anyone else mentioned it but Ed Sullivan actually did like Elvis , first he wouldn’t of had him on 3 times & he even says to the audience after the last performance -“I wanted to say to Elvis Presley and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy, and wherever you go, Elvis, we want to say we’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show with a big name than we’ve had with you. So now let’s have a tremendous hand for a very nice person
I would love to see some Hammer films or shows in 4K...anything Lee and Cushing....but I don't think there are any yet? Horror Express, Creeping Flesh, Horror of Dracula etc...any Amicus in 4K??? Really want to see that happening. Love the look of Freddie Francis films. Or Flesh and The Fiends...that has amazing B&W photography
Yeah man. I just rewatched there version of Horror Express and was thinking what a great addition The Creeping Flesh would be to their line. I'd be happy with just a blur-ay.
My 5 Favorite Releases This Year
1) Shawscope Vol 2 (Arrow)
2) Police Story Trilogy 4k Box Set (Eureka)
3) Raging Bull 4k (Criterion)
4) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 4k (Vinegar Syndrome)
5) Robocop 4k UHD (Arrow)

"Double Indemnity" on 4k made the year for me. IMO the best "noir" of all. Great video Heath.
Happy New Year to you and your awesome wife! Love your video's.
Great roundup. The Cocaine Bear called and he wants his hat back!
That happened off-camera, when the video ended! hehe
Buckle up because Bree bought me a couple of new corduroy bucket hats for Christmas!
He`s no longer boxing and has his own restaurant by now.
Great stuff, Heath. I love that you've got Casablanca AND Magnum P.I. in there. Happy New Year!
You missed Righting Wrongs! wow, what a set!
Excellent rundown! Great no-edit flow, great conversation. Really enjoyed it (as always). A lot here I'm reminded of that I need to make sure stays on my to-get list.

Great picks, Heath! Love the passion you have for your personal faves. There were definitely some heavy hitters in 2022!
This was very enjoyable Heath. 2022 was a fantastic year for us!

Love the Criterion Wall E 4K! I finally got to share a criterion disc with my kids. Amazing set.

Cool video Heath! When I saw the title I thought you were reviewing music CDs! 😮 But luckily, it was Blu-rays 🤣

That Atari game is incredible. It raises the bar for how an anniversary collection could and should be done!

I filled up on a lot of boutique label horror on bluray from 101 and Arrow last year. Now my focus is hard on MST3K releases.

Good question! Robin Hood didn't come with a Blu-ray disc, it's all on one 4K.
Back to the Beach is the movie with the song bird is a word if so it was a favorite of mine when I watched it as a youngin lol.
For the past two or three years at least, you've said this was the best year for physical media yet and it couldn't get any better! I wonder what next year will bring...? :)
Whatever 2023 brings, it will likely top 2022. I'l probably have some more things to say about this in a week or two as we kick off the new year.
Truly the Golden Age is now. There were so many awesome releases.
Great list.
Saw 50 Ft. Woman in theater when I was about 12 I believe in the 1960s, and I remember that being the first movie or t.v. show where I really and I mean really noticed the female form as nice to watch:)
I know what you mean about Peter Jackson. Personally, I wish he had kept the car in the background of The Fellowship of the Ring.
A wish list for release is an old Beatles documentary called The Compleat Beatles
TOTALLY AGREE!!!!
Great. Now that I know "Ozzie and Harriet" is on physical media, I'm going to go broke.
what about the sony pictures classics box set?

@@CerealAtMidnight Check out the Philosophy of Neo-noir edited by Mark Conrad if you want more to read on the subject.
I own it and I'd also recommend Conrad's earlier project, The Philosophy of Film Noir.
@@CerealAtMidnight I have both as well.
Still waiting on the dukes of hazard to come to blu ray.
I don't think it will ever happen.

Good news, Arrow's Robin Hood is a single region free 4K disc.
