Hi Heath, long time watcher and first time commenter. I love watching your videos because you seem so genuinely in love with the history of film and TV and it's a little cosy corner of indulgence to have you playing in our living room with such warmth and enthusiasm. Just thought I'd drop that.

We really appreciate everything you do, and we'd love to keep seeing your videos regularly but it’s hard work and takes time, ultimately if a break helps you focus and tap into more passion and energy, then do it. Negativity really sucks but you are a huge positive, and you'll always have the core of real supporters who love movies like you do, who’ll follow wherever you go.

Heath, must be honest with you. Many of the movies you talk about I don't have a lot of interest in, but I enjoy hearing about them and learning about these genres and releases. Thanks for content and sharing your love of film. For what it's worth I'm a newer viewer who found your channel after coming back to physical media and deciding to approach my film viewing a little more seriously this year. I've been really focussed on sharing my love of film with my kids. During this process I found wanted teach them to think more critically and dig deeper into movies. You're channel has consistently been a big help with that, not only helping challenge myself but by extension my kids. I really appreciate that you consistently make me thing about films and this hobby in different ways. I know it's tough but don't let the frustration or negativity drag you down. You're absolutely a positive impact on the community and appreciated. Keep up the great work and please keep the content coming one way or another.

I watch a lot of film related content and there's so many 'coming soon' videos pushed my way by the algorithm. Game the system, ignore the triggered, and please continue to share your thoughts.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't even begin to describe what this channel means to me. I found this channel when the gods of the algorithm showed me a video years ago that was entitled something like, "Tarantino-esque movies you may not have heard of"
I wanted every one of those movies. I made the cringy , my wallet hates you comment. Which I still regret.
Heath has made me a movie enthusiast. A TV super fan and a guy who gets excited just contemplating all of the films and TV shows I have yet to discover.
I've learned that there is more nutrition in " cereal at midnight" then you will find in any other channel. Long live this great film loving family and whatever form it takes.

Thanks for the update today, Heath! Captain Planet is very nostalgic to me. I've had the first season for years, as it was the only one available. Some of the episodes are worse than others, but there is something nostalgic about this show. I used to have some of the toys, but I think they are hard to come by in good condition nowadays. I love the release videos. I never have felt pressure to purchase. I watch them because you have given me and countless others an education in film history through explaining them. Without these stacks my exposure is narrowed. So I appreciate the monthly release videos and would hate to see them go. Heath you offer so much more than advertisement for publishing. Your channel communicates a passion for film that is palpable and transferable to others. And that my friend is amazing, don’t drown that gift in the sea of all the noise around you. Final thought, this may not make sense, you carry the spirit of film critics I grew up watching on tv in the 80’s. It’s as if their baton’s were passed to you. That’s the good vibes I get at Cereal at Midnight. So, thank you Heath. ❤

I didn't have anything to say. But I guess just to help the channel I'll comment by saying that I've been buying up more tv stuff on dvd myself. I realized, like you mention, that those increasingly get harder to find over time, both physically and streaming. Recently I bought all the seasons of Tales From The Crypt and Thirty Something. I also want to buy all the rest of the Perfect Strangers seasons.
I can't say I ever watched Captain Planet. There are however plenty of childhood favorites that I still wish we could get like Muppet Babies and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Or even the third season of The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

I'm glad you enjoyed LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. I believe I was one of the people to suggest it was right up your street. Have you seen GHOSTWATCH? That was clearly one of their inspirations. Also, I did see the first season of "The Night Agent." Really enjoyed it. Not quite as "3 Days of the Condor" as I had hoped. But still good. Apparently, it was the most watched show on Netflix in 2023. The second season release has been delayed until next year. And a third season has been announced. Glad to hear ClassicFlix is taking on Hopalong Cassidy. The prints of those have been fairly well maintained. So, those should look great in HD. Hope we get Gene Autry on HD one of these days. Because those also have been well maintained. A real restoration challenge would be the Buster Crabbe Billy the Kid movies. Never seen good prints of those.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 месяца назад +1

Not only have I seen Ghostwatch, I had the pleasure of interviewing the director: ruclips.net/video/rpyQ-U9REnw/видео.html
Ghostwatch is still the best-executed experiment with the form, in my opinion.
I agree with many of your other sentiments, re: Gene Autry, Buster Crabbe, etc, and have been encouraged to see a couple of Roy Rogers movies get restorations of late.
The streaming realm is so opaque to me, I can't keep up. Thanks for the insight about The Night Agent.

@@CerealAtMidnight After posting, I had a vague memory of you doing a video about GHOSTWATCH but I forgot you did an interview with the director. Those who've never watched Heath's interviews are missing out. His joy and love for movies comes out more there than anywhere else. So, if you're sick of all the negative videos about movies and TV on RUclips, dive into the Cereal at Midnight archive and watch some of his interviews. You won't be disappointed.

I keep Umbrella way in the back due to their habit of releasing 4K SDR editions of films - then a few weeks/months later a different label will release a full on 4K/DV/Atmos edition. I’m curious to see what they’re going to do with Tarsem’s The Fall. They just announced that yesterday but it’s also just a 4K SDR version.

Another example is ‘Caligula,’ which got a Dark Sky release in North America that released in September and Umbrella is releasing a version in October for Aussies.
Ultimately, Umbrella is meant for an Australian audience, so there are bound to be some films they get licensing agreements for while another distributor in North America is buying a similar license for the same film. It’s not a situation for which I would think to blame or punish Umbrella for; it’s the greedy studios who are selling licenses to several different regions at the same time. It’s up to us to be smart consumers and pick the edition we want based on factors like cost, the special features and reviews of the quality of the transfer.

Thanks for everything that you do! I really appreciate it! I can tell that you're tired. If you need to take some time off, then I completely understand. Doing RUclips videos isn't an easy job, especially with the channel that you have. It takes a lot of time and hard work for sure. There's always going to be detractors and haters unfortunately. There's a saying. "When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing nobody". I'm going to be honest with you. There's a lot of stuff that you cover that doesn't interest me because it's not my cup of tea, and there are other things that I do like. Regardless, I'm not going to come out talk about how a particular movie sucks and that it's trash because I'm not that type of person. Whether someone likes or dislikes a movie is his or her opinion. An opinion is subjective after all. At the end of the day, I'm here to support you, your wonderful channel, and your love of film and cinema. I appreciate the dedication, passion, and hard work! It means a lot! Regardless of what you decide to do, I'll be here to support you. Thanks, Heath! God bless and stay safe!

Sandy Dennis did two episodes of ‘Naked City’ (1962, ‘63) but isn’t listed as a guest star but some actress named Nancy Marchand did just one episode and she gets listed? Thank you to the copy editor who thought Nancy Marchand, who won a couple of Emmys, was a bigger name than Ms. Dennis, who had an Oscar on her mantelpiece. I am not related to Ms. Dennis in the least or part of her estate, but I find her exclusion from that guest list offensive. She did two guest appearances for which she probably didn’t make a lot because it was at the start of her career, but they remember some other “big name” actress who did one whole episode over her.
I realize I may be the only one bothered by this, but there’s really no other way to take it than as an insult. Because by leaving Ms. Dennis out and including Ms. Marchand, they’re either saying, “Sandy Dennis has been dead since 1992 so who cares?” (Yet, they included a couple actors on there who passed much earlier than her, such as Henry Fonda, who walked through the pearly gates a decade before.) Or they’re saying, “Nancy Marchand won a couple of Emmys while Sandy Dennis could only manage an Oscar. Big deal.”

It's understandable if you want to take a break. Making hour long videos every other day is exhausting, and doing many of them on Blu-rays is probably not creatively fulfilling. I don't know your personal situation and whether this channel is a source of income, but if you're in a position to take a risk you could make a new channel and do something slightly different. Some larger channels have observed that the algorithm's focus on retention means that channels without a distinct identity or series of videos will suffer when some videos are popular and others are not e.g blu-ray videos get consistent views but the other stuff is hit and miss. I work in Comms professionally and have experience working with channels on YT, so if you want to chat let me know.

There's definitely a feeling that I spent far too much time talking about formats rather than films--or rather, that the audience that follows me is more interested in hearing me talk about formats than films. I'm not a fan of how commercial and consumer-crazed things have become in the last five years.
But generally, any "content creation" takes a toll after a while. I've created over 1300 videos, and some days I feel like I've said what I wanted to say here, and that if I really want to get into movies and why I love them, RUclips is no longer the place to do it. On its best day, my video is going to succeed or fail based on title and thumbnail, not content and substance. Between that and the rising anger about things that ultimately do not matter (my relatively positive reviews of Horizon, Megalopolis, and Joker 2 have led to a lot of vitriol, not just on this platform, but everywhere), I'm just not sure how to talk about my love of movies anymore in a way that anyone seems to care about.
Edit: to clarify, I don't need agreement or validation, but the constant rage from a part of the audience is stifling. I don't know how to shut it out, since it's not just here, it's on every platform I'm on. There's no safe distance.

2 of the channels I follow have closed because of negative comments and toxicity and those are channels a lot smaller than yours so I can only imagine the kind of aggro you must be receiving, but know that you make the lives of a lot of people happier and more interesting with your videos. For some reason, or many reasons, people have become unbearably uncivil and belligerent, one big cause is the terrible mental health of people after the pandemic.
anyway I would advise you, as a doctor, to take a few weeks off to restore your enthusiasm and rest, and more importantly plan what you want to do with your channel. Thank god, you have several options because your channel isn't necessarily associated with a genre of movies, so you have sort of a blank canvas. I wish you all the luck in the world, and thanks for the entertainment you given us.

I got the standard release of "Late Night with the Devil" from Umbrella just so I could have that "VHS broadcast" cut.
I've only seen the theatrical release.

I think it's the same one on the disc, which removes the documentary prologue from the beginning. It will play better on VHS, though.

REDBOX. Heath there was an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday about the REBOX bankruptcy and the cost to remove the tens of thousands of machines. In each machine there are approximately 600 DVD/Blu-Rays. What was more interesting was the public comments to the article. I would say the majority were asking what DVD's were, haven't played a DVD'S in years, etc. I know the commenters are NOT collectors like us, but it is reveling none the less. I was at a good friend's house 2 weeks ago and he wanted to watch Star Trek TOS episodes and had NO IDEA there were licensed to Paramount Plus and we couldn't watch them. A lot of education to be done out there!

It's true, the general public has no knowledge or even any interest in how this stuff works. I've been trying for years to get information out there, but these days I find myself feeling like I'm trying to hold back the ocean. We represent the tiniest of audiences, probably less than 1% globally, and it's easier and more fun to simply talk about movies, not formats. But even that is losing some of its fun, since we can't even talk about movies anymore without getting yelled at...a lot. Since posting relatively positive reviews of Horizon Part 2, Megalopolis, and Joker 2, I've gotten MANY attacks, both on my work and personally. I'm not sure it's worth it anymore.

@@CerealAtMidnight Thank you for your response, Heath. What you said about "getting yelled at", I was literally just at High Def digest reading Friday the 13th review and one of the commenters at the bottom said and I paraphrase "dude, you didn't say HR10 or Dolby Vision". NOT a thank you for the review then a polite question. The rudeness as you have mentioned in earlier videos is a shame and I admire your backbone and emotional stamina!
