  • FULL REVIEW HERE: hothardware.com... - Dell's Alienware team has revamped the AW 13's internals with Intel’s latest 6th generation Skylake Core series processors and as well as a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory. But that's not the star of this show - it's the Alienware 13's gorgeous 2560X1440 OLED display that steals it. Drool-worthy, no doubt!

      My perfect laptop is an XPS 15 with a 2560x1600p, G-sync, 100hz, 1ms response time, OLED Infinity Edge Display, 45W Core i7-7700HQ, 32GB DDR4 Ram, 100W Nvidia GTX 1060 (more powerful than a desktop 970) with 8GB of VRAM, a 512GB Samsung 950 pro PCIe SSD, a 2TB Samsung M9T 2.5" 9.5mm HDD. Great review! Had a chance to try it out at the MS Store myself. Loved the build, performance and keyboard. Absolutely just did not like the trackpad. I wish they'd throw a glass MS Precision trackpad on there (without the extra buttons). It's amazing what a quality trackpad can do for the overall feel of a mobile laptop.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks! And truth told, now that I've spent more time on the machine, I'm not big on the trackpad either. I have to play with the settings on it though because it's a quality Synaptics pad and maybe they can resolve some of the issues out of the box with a default config software update.

      Paul Weber Yup, I forgot to add that the screen should be a convertible touch screen like the one on the original dell xps 12, with wacom aes pen support with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity.........a 1080p 60fps webcam with windows hello and front flash (easy on the eyes like the xperia z phones) and a fingerprint sensor. That would be the perfect laptop that one can use for 4 to 5 years without a need to upgrade.

    Get the LCD version. It's $350 cheaper and the same exact specs. You're probably more likely to have better battery life too. I own the LCD version and it's a dream.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  8 лет назад +1

      I would disagree with the battery life statement. Maybe the lower res IPS panel will do better with fewer pixels but a 2560X1440 OLED panel likely draws notably less power than an equivalent res IPS panel.

    I am trying to decide between the QHD version of this with the 960M with the idea of getting the box (forgot the name) for desktop graphics. The OLED is nice but if I am going to drop $2k I would rather get the Razor Blade 14 with the 970M and better CPU. Or the Razor Stealth with the core. MSI GS40 Phantom is appealing also with the compact size and 970M. Ghost Pro GS60, Asus G752 or The Alienware 17..........I just can't make up my mind. I love Alienwares style and ventilation, MSI smaller profile/portability with beast hardware. The Razer Blade 14 is just great all around with MacBook quality build and super slim design and not to mention the really good hardware it's packing. I just can't decide!! Discuss?

    • @GoneKiffen
      @GoneKiffen 8 лет назад

      I ordered the Alienware 13 OLED core i5 version. I kept going back and forth between the 13 and 15. The 15 for the same price has a quad core i7 and 12 gb of ram instead of 8... The OLED takes forever to ship and while I still have not received it yet, it's given me plenty of time to freak out and wonder if i made the right choice. But for me, in a laptop dual core is better than quad core for the sole reason of battery life. A quad core will make the battery drain much faster. If i wasnt going to build a desktop i might have gone a different route altogether. But for what im going to end up using it for the battery life makes up for the downgraded specs. Coming from someone who spent a year trying to figure out what computer to get. Just figure out what you need to have in your computer and what you will use it for. Do you have a desktop? Do you plan on getting one? If so then consider a less expensive model of a laptop you like. If you dont want or have a desktop then go all out on a laptop but remember that some thin laptops cant cool themselves well and end up throttling under demanding tasks like gaming. Which makes a high end cpu not so high end. Id also like to mention MSI laptops aren't nearly as well built as Alienware or Razer. They are a bit flimsy with lackluster displays. But they do have a nice pricetag. If i were you id go with Alienware or Razer. Do some research on each and try to figure out what would work best for you and what would make you happiest to use and look at every day. Good luck

    • @williamt5359
      @williamt5359 8 лет назад

      +TheRedHarlow BIG word of advice for you and anyone buying a 13 r3. The gpu (960 or 965m) can't run games at high on QHD, hell low settings at the least if you wanna game at 4k. My screen is the 1366x768 and it can run games on high/ultra. However once you double or quadruple those pixels, the performance drops significantly.

    • @williamt5359

    I love the 62Wh battery but im worried. Will the OLED version of this laptop drain the battery faster than the regular 1080p version even when not gaming?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  8 лет назад

      Would have to get the 1080p IPS version in for direct comparison but in general, OLED panels are actually more power efficient than IPS. So, in reality, it should not be much if any additional power draw at all.

    • @DanMakabre
      @DanMakabre 8 лет назад

      +HotHardware what about the sheer amount of extra pixels in those 4K displays? You don't think it's enough to say it'll drain more power?

    • @DanMakabre
      @DanMakabre 8 лет назад

      +HotHardware I honestly want it for the .3 extra display size. But I'm afraid that it'll lower the 10 hour battery capacity advertised on their site.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  8 лет назад

      The OLED panel I have here is 2560X1440 res. The 4K panel would definitely draw more, but I'm not sure how the 1440p OLED versus the 1080p IPS version would fare. It might be close.

    I currently have an Alienware 13 R2 (2015). I was wondering how your unit was able to use a Samsung 961PM. My Laptop came with a Hard Drive and upon contacting Dell I was able to buy a M.2 Adapter (F7PCY) which looks like this newportcomputers.com/dell-component-f7pcy , However it seems that this unit only supports B Key M.2 Drives which is the older M.2 (Samsung 850 etc) that uses SATA and not PCIe. If you still have the unit can you check how the Samsung 961 is added on to the unit. Thank You !

      There most likely won't be any mobile versions of the 1070-1080's. Extremely unlikely as the downscaling they'd have to make would be leaps and bounds more extreme than ever before. I'd expect full desktop cards in laptops by December.

      Does a machine of this class really need it when, on the gaming front, most stuff if GPU bound? I mean if you're going to work on it, I could see quad-core being useful but it's also going to eat battery life.

    • @M1ke1LL
      @M1ke1LL 8 лет назад

      Alot of games REQUIRE a quad core. This with a quad core would be the ultimate tie between portability and performance. I'm waiting on some 1 to make a 12-14 inch quad core laptop with or without a gpu but it has a port for a EGPU.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 лет назад

      Color fidelity-wise, this OLED panel would be better than that IGZO display but then again, it's lower res and 13-inches versus 17 in the Razer.

    • @robhewitt5640
      @robhewitt5640 6 лет назад

      HotHardware I don't know what to buy! Mainly game on it and love 4k. The igzo on the razer looks amazing. Is the oled that much better? Don't want to regret my purchase

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 лет назад

      Well, if you like to work in 4K res than that's definitely worth it but you won't be gaming at 4K res on either of these notebooks, if that makes a difference to you. The GPUs on board either couldn't power 4K gaming. So unless you want that big screen real estate of 17-inches and high res for work, the OLED panel is generally better, especially for gaming. They have very fast response times too.

    • @robhewitt5640

      HotHardware the GTX 1080 in the razer should do games at 4k? Obviously with some tweaking. It's only for gaming, would the 13" be too small? Such a tough decision to make!!

      If it's all you have to game on and gaming is your main focus, I'd say 13-inch is probably a bit on the small side, for my liking anyway, though you can hook them up to a larger external monitor too. And yeah, that 1080 should get close in most games, at least at Medium image quality. 4K gaming to me isn't all that though. Just my preference, I'd rather have high frame rates and max IQ than super high res. 1440p gaming for me is just fine.

    how does it compare to XPS 15 4K touch screen

      In terms of brightness, saturation and contrast, it's superior in every way than the XPS' display. However, the XPS does have that sweet, minimal bezel Infinity Edge setup that is also just gorgeous. The nice thing about the AW 13's OLED panel is that it's great for gaming too, with very fast response times. The XPS 15 can game too with it's display and the new GTX 1050 on board ruclips.net/video/c4ub90ckkj4/видео.html - but its display isn't OLED, it's IPS. It's a great display actually, but nothing quiet catches OLED. :)

      I want the gaming option but really want a good movie experience, I was thinking of OLED for that

      Chris Dinardo I think that's a fair approach but obviously the 13-inch Alienware machine is slightly smaller then the XPS 15 at 15 inches

      Would upgrade to the Alienware 15 inch but no OLED option for that size.

      Marky Marc gee that sucks. pentile was an eyesore with galaxy s3. I assume this will have a even lower pixel density

    Aren't you bored of saying all that stupid specification and numbers on every review… Those are kind of stuff people can read by itself… Can you please talk about just your experience of have this thing in your hands… Really talking about spec sound primitive…

      Appreciate your feedback but I'm not sure all would agree with you. I cover the high level specs only and some folks definitely want the audio cue in the even they look away etc. It takes maybe 15 - 30 seconds too.
