Hmm, this Hedon game looks like my kind of thing :^) Thanks a ton for covering it, dude, I'm so glad more and more people are getting into my weird ass point and click adventure imsim wannabe boomer shooter. Can't wait for the Bloodrite followup!
Hell Yeah Kirk! Been hyped for you to cover Hedon for a long time. Wonderful move splitting the videos up into Crystal Heart and bloodrite, the two are different enough to need seperate videos. A lot of your points were like mine and it was almost like I was talking through you, in a weird way. Pumped for the Bloodrite video!
Bit of a bonus, if you're playing it through Steam, it plays REALLY well on a gamepad with gyro aim through steam's controller utility. Makes for some really great couch play.
In the first episode Flamethrower is absolutely broken. Other than the elementals and the flying witches, it pretty much mass-kills entire armies of enemies for very little ammo usage. In Bloodrite (episode 2) a lot of your enemies are demons, making them resistant to fire. I imagine it was done on purpose, because the dev also noticed how broken the flamethrower is.
I really love old school shooters that give you a crazy arsenal and fast movement. I have far too many hrs in Ultrakill and Dusk. But I also cannot stand being lost, not knowing what to do and back tracking. Hell I even got lost in Dusk sometimes. This game looks awesome but I just know I would get stuck for sure.
Yeah, there is a bit of that in this game. I don't mind it, but you need to read and pay attention, and it is super easy to get lost and off track. The arena battle stuff is great, but exploration can be frustrating and it's "Morrowind" levels of obtuse about making the player figure stuff out. That's not bad, but a lot of players looking for an old school run and gun style game aren't going to like it.
Randy Magnum Have you tried not being stupid? I had almost no problems with getting stuck in this game. Bloodrites is slightly more difficult in that regard but it still isn't that bad.
Was on his Patreon for a time. Love this game but need to play through it again as I played before the 2nd episode existed and he added that prelude to it. Excellent game for sure with a nice mix of raw FPS fun, puzzles, and lots of RPG elements. Highly recommend it, the orc and goblin babes, and of course Zan herself, being thicc and stuff like the pinups in secrets, just make it better!
I wanted to play this game for a while but I am not so sure if the slower puzzle solving parts is for me, I'll have to play for myself but I really don't want to get lost in an fps that is centered around action or get lost when the game's combat is as satisfying as this game's.
I feel like this [artly inspired Doom Eternal's gameplay: Every gun is good an enemy, but certain guns and gun combos are outstanding against certain ones.
Gosh, this looks so much better than the average boomer shooter. Actual level design, pacing, and narrative. Not to mention the gunplay is wonderful to look at
interesting, I missed a bunch of mechanics in my playthrough. Also I might rate it as the best indie FPS I've played, if it didn't get frustrating sometimes when you don't know where to go.
i found it borring, i stopped playing it when ashes 2063 came out, which made it look like i joke and thus i never finished it, i will finish it now since this video reminded me this.
You're supposed to pronounce it 'head-on'. Took me a while to get it, as well. I realize that's not actually the way you pronounce the word, but it's just how it's meant to be.
It's "Hee-don" as in "Hedonistic" or "Hedonism". As in the pursuit of pleasure, often associated with depravity and sin. Hence the thicc orcs and sexual themes in the game. "Head-On" is a deodorant stick style applicator for a painkiller for headaches "as seen on TV" product.
honestly i didnt like htis one. i find most of the game to be boring. I was close to finishing the first episode but then ashes 2063 episode 2 came out, so i switched to that one. once i finished it i realize that ashes 2063 made hedon look like a joke, so then other games came out and i played those. Now that i am done with other games i will finish this, but until then, go play ashes 2063.
honestly one of my main disappointments with this game was the level design, it seems to be heavily inspired by unreal to a point he contacted the composer of unreal to hire him and he gave him some unreleased songs which are leaps and bound above everything in the game and probably the best thing in the game. The level design is not like unreal at all. Many of the environments in unreal took place out doors and you could see what the alien planet looked like. This game, mostly takes place underground in mines, which is boring. Another thing is that the level design isnt that nonliner, it doesnt even do the hub system that you go back and fourth level that hexen and mods like abysm, ascension and ashes 2063 do. If anything i was disappointed. Then again eventually he will learn to make better maps once he knows how to make better gzdoom levels, maybe that happens in episode 2, but like i said, i never finished the first episode. I should finish it.

@@zomby138 Yes~
Oh hey, it's the Gmanlives fan.

Oh nice! Now I'll have something to watch with my coffee.
Had this on my radar for a while, this review convinced me to go ahead with the purchase, awesome review!
Thanks man! I hope you enjoy it!

Hedon is essentionally a modern day Hexen.
For sure. Reminds me a lot of Strife also, Bloodrite especially.
I feel like Hedon is the Dark Souls of Hexenlikes XD
huh i thought arhurian legends was that.
@@arkgaharandan5881 thats really just a hack and slash kinda like Witchaven, Im pretty sure
@@MidnightMedium yeah you are right, hexen had hub environments that you can go back and fourth, something that this game does not have either.
Surprised I hadn't caught wind of this one earlier, it looks great! Thanks for putting it on my radar, I'll be checking it out when I'm able ♥
Great a review of a great game. Hedon is criminally underappreciated.
Bit of a bonus, if you're playing it through Steam, it plays REALLY well on a gamepad with gyro aim through steam's controller utility. Makes for some really great couch play.
"Set in colorful fantasy world full of curvaceous orc-women and sinful demons..."
THANK. GOD.

Awesome review Kirk 👍🏼
Thanks Robo!
Amazing review. I was looking at this game for some time but now I am convinced.
Apply directly to the forehead!!!
😂
......then step on me.
Damn, that thumbnail is cool. Loved the video.
Thank you!
“What is the time, KIRK COLLECTS?”
Wait, wrong channel...
hedon was one of the best shooter i played in my entire life
the atmosphäre was so thick i could cut through it with a knife
I should head on back and finish this
Indeed you should!
Ha!

This game is incredibly underrated. I haven't gotten around to part 2, but if it's more of part 1, that sounds great.
Honestly, it blows part 1 out of the water. It's really really good.
Already own the game, but haven't started it yet.
Awesome review, Kirk!
Hedon's a really great fps but everyone seems to pronounce it differently :P
MegapiemanPHD Yeah, is it head-on or hee-don?
This is a good type of game, the type of takes ideas from pervious games and does its own thing with them.

Can't be as bad as Hexen's Seven Portals hub lol
great review Kirk!

I wish this game gave you some direction what to do. Like a in game journal that works. I press the journal button and nothing happens.

You're supposed to pronounce it 'head-on'. Took me a while to get it, as well.
I realize that's not actually the way you pronounce the word, but it's just how it's meant to be.
Are you sure? Zan confirmed the correct pronunciation to me Twitter.
honestly my problem with Hedon's graphics were that the textures reminded me too much of the minecraft painterly pack
MEATY in every way
Stop it at 0.33....omg look at her right arm!!!

I was thinking the same thing. But I researched the pronunciation and the developer himself confirmed it for me on Twitter. It’s heh-don 🤷🏻♂️
iron fury had a badass main character as well so its not that original. Iam sure others did that before.

Episode 2 wins by a landslide compared to the first one. Civvie mentions it as well. The quality took a huge boost by the second episode.

Play the second episode. It literally combats all of your complaints and throws them away.
