- One of the Best Space Games - I totally agree with that. And the original game was really long ago. For the time it came out, it was ahead of it's time. Homeworld in 1999 and Homeworld 2 in 2003. it was mindblowing.
Played the original, and remember how the opening scene grabbed me along with the shock on what happens early in the campaign. Have played every release and can't wait for Homeworld 3! Adagio for Strings has held a special place in my heart ever since.
Absolutely fabulous game. I remember playing it and being gobsmacked by "that scene" back in 1999 along with the choral version of Adagio for String by Barber.
For someone who grew up with good old C&C this blew me away. Atmospherics spot on, i really wanted revenge when jumping back in to find the cryo pods under attack.
I played Homeworld when it was released. i was blown away by the graphics, the smoothness of the gameplay, the story, the music, it was almost perfect! what a great game that was.
Growing up with Homeworld was such unforgettable experience that even 24 years later I can’t help but smile when I remember it. Can’t wait for the sequel!
Honourable mention should go to Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. Not a space game, but a very lovingly crafted game by the same studios that is working on HW3, and is set up as a prequel to the original. Also a pretty good take on the RTS game with definite Homeworld aesthetics and soundtrack.
Homeworld II was my introduction to PC gaming, specifically the space genre. It holds a VERY special place in my heart. I pre-ordered HW3 the instant I saw it was available.

A masterstorke of a game, no matter how many times I played through back in the day those frickin surviors always tugged at my heart and I felt it when "trays" got destroyed. I own the remaster but I think they changed the balance from the original as it seems much easier to me than the original .
Played the original when it came out, still use the message received ping WAV file as my email sound at work! Thanks for the heads-up on the free Remastered edition: downloading right now! You very rightly pointed out the ability to use multiple formations (in a 3D volume) but what folks that don't know the game may not have picked up on is that you can (or at least could) organise your ships into a formation and then set _that_ as a custom formation.
I think this was the first game to bring tears to my eyes when returning to Kharak. I refought that battle dozens of times trying to rescue as many cyrotrays as possible. Man, that brings back memories. Yea, I was at the inception and I wanted to say...the remastered version is superb. In the campaign, I had only achieved about a third of the missions before my PC died...so, I'm restarting and looking forward to returning to one of my favorite games. All the best. Cheers.

Interesting bit of trivia: The voice actor of the Bentusi has a minor role in the Battlestar Galactica movie where he plays one of the cylon's hybrids - human like lifeforms bound to the cylon ships. Homeworld was originally planned to be a BSG game based off the original series, but they couldn't secure the rights so made their own franchise based off it instead.
"Interesting bit of trivia" god I can't tell you how annoying it is scrolling down the comments and seeing the dreaded "fun fact" prefix especially when it's often painfully obvious or well known stuff.
@@CoffeeFiend1 Not that well known and at least ten people so far found it interesting, so eff off - your opinion isn't as important as you think it is.

Estos juegos son una obra maestra en toda regla! historia, música, game play implacable. TODO! un gran antes y después, todos deben darle una oportunidad ahora que esta gratis en la epic store.
Unbeatable indeed - and unforgettable. Played the original and two more sequels there after - also accompanied by yet another epic soundtrack. Pro tip - a group of 6 or 8 or more Ion Frigates focused on one target is devastating.
Cataclysm. That was my first exposure to homeworld. Loved it. Hope homeworld 3 releases a massive manual filled with lore like homeworld and Cataclysm too.
One of the few must-have RTS games of all time. For weeks I was completely engulfed in it when I played it after its release. Amazing atmosphere, storytelling, music, gameplay, and aesthetics. Can't wait for Homeworld 3. Btw Homeworld Deserts of Kharak and Homeworld Cataclysm are also highly recommended.
To be fair, i didn't expect much of Deserts of Kharak, but i'm was quite surprised, its a pretty awesome prequel to the franchise, and the story in the game never been better, you know how the game will end from the very begining, but seeing everything unfold right in front of our eyes, was epic, then you start to play the first game after 20 something years, with better graphics, and boy, it was something! Now i'm hyped for Homeworld 3! Well played Gearbox, well played...
I am a fan since the first day. The Homeworld 1 credit song and soundtrack was the first one i tried to get after playing a game. That moment, when i finished the game, sitting there watching the full credits and recall the awsomenss of the story and game i just was allowed to wittnes and then see the last scene, the sea of stars... and that marker..... Really one of the most epic and deepest gaming moment of my live!
The Homeworld series is one of my all-time favorite franchises that I have ever played. I really enjoyed playing the original, it's sequel and even Homeworld Cataclysm. Later on, when I saw Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, I had to get that one as well. All of those games, IMO are very good and provided countless hours of enjoyment. I was very glad to see these games come back again.
Yes I remember being impressed by Homeworld and Homeworld 2 back then. Very cinematic storytelling that drew you in, combined with the powerful strategic map. I think they'd done a pretty good job with the controls that it never became overwhelming despite all that was going on in 3D space.
24 years I cant believe its been that long , still not played it enough. Love the mod scene for this game. If you could have Homeworld with a dash of both Freespace and Elite Dangerous I think that would be the perfect Space game. Just as long as FDev were not in charge of the project.
Homeworld was one of the most addictive games I have ever played even though I didn't really like it at first. It wasn't really my idea of what a space game should be at the time , but within a week I was hooked. Lol
Homeworld 1 and 2 are my all-time space strategy love. I was so crazy about it that I had 2 copies of them on DVD, just to be sure. Later I bought the Homeworld games on Steam, and again on GOG, and recently I got them for free on Epic. I used to play them over and over and over. I just immensely enjoyed observing the magnificent space battles. I also bought and played, what is now called, Homeworld Emergence, which originally released as Cataclysm. I always hoped they would release more factions, with new ship designs, but that never happened. There was, perhaps still is, a huge modding community for the games. I have all the mods burned on DVD.
For me, Homeworld is my "first" space game. I played games set on alien planets before and other RTS but Homeworld was the first one where traversing space was a core part of the gameplay.
I threw many boxes away the last time I moved, but the silver homeworld original manual is right behind me on the shelves ;) Kids, in the old days, we used to buy games in boxes and it came with maps and nicely printed and layout manuals. This one along with the MS FS2000 are the top two I kept.
Man, this reminds me of Freelancer. I really want someone to do a full remake with HD graphics and effects. That would be amazing! I would love to see that world expanded on, just like we're seeing with some private servers for WoW classic where they are making classic+ content/dungeons/zones etc. I know Star Citizen is supposed to be the child of Freelancer but I really liked the arcade style flight controls and atmosphere.
This ain't completely true... did you ever play X4? X4... the X series is basically the final evolution of this genre of game, an RTS (sort of...) that you play in first person... Homeworld is an awesome timesink, but it's formula was surpassed long time ago, it still holds and you still can have fun playing Homeworld, but again, you will finish a game in some few hours and will be itching for more... this more (and its a LOT more), will be provided by games like X4, or some Stelaris, Endless Space, even Eve...
Just as Half-life is one of the best single player story experiences of all time, so is Homeworld as best RTS single player story experience of all time! Homeworld's soundtrack is something you will go back to time and time again it is so good! Shout out to Paul Ruskay! What an amazing composer putting these tracks together. The challenge sometimes with remasters is things get lost and the classic is still the best. For Homeworld the problem was with formations. I hope they fixed them.
I remember playing it in 1999 but I only got about halfway into the campaign I reckon. I moved over to Age of Empires II since that was what everyone else was playing in school at the time.
There has been a few PC's between the last time I played this (original release) and now. Thank you for the heads up, I might have missed this awesome blast from the past otherwise.
Was there since the beginning. If you thought the game itself was detailed, then you've never gotten your hands on the game manual that came with the first game. If you are curious, do yourself a favor, treat yourself and find a pdf of the original homeworld manual. Its an excellent read. Also, look up the original ending theme called "The Ladder" by Yes. Licensing issue prevented it from being included with the remastered editions.
Thanks Ant! I've never tried it before, but based on your review, I downloaded it and will give it a try!! I've enjoyed your videos since my day playing Elite: Dangerous, thanks for all the hours and hard work you put into your videos!!
Would love to see more coverage of Homeworld 3 from you. Not that there's much to cover yet, Gearbox are being pretty tight-lipped it seems, but you know what I mean.
Right I played the original game, homeworld 2 and cataclysm. At the time there was simply nothing like them , fleet movement/formations were just amazing. When the remastered version was released I bought it only to discover that the fleet mechanics were broken. Formations just descended in furballs etc. Did they ever fix this?
Already beaten you to it, lol. Sadly i paid for the game about a month or so ago. Yes its a classic. My pentium 3 600mHz processor did a good job and i think i had a voodoo 3 graphics card. *Sigh* happy memories😊
Loved how the cloaked fighters were critical in completing the first game. Much preferred Cataclysm to Homeworld 2 as it was harder and required better strategies to survive.
Cataclysm even had a first person view from the cockpit. It was mind-blowing at the time. It was after I replayed and finished the remastered edition that I started looking around for a space game. That led me to Star Citizen, and from there to Elite: Dangerous. But Homeworld was always the original and I'm forever fond of it and the soundtrack - including the cracking Yes song in the end credits...#HomeworldForever
Funny how things works... when i play X4 i had a distinct feeling of something familiar, something that i saw before, but couldn't quite grasp what was it... 20 something years later and i finally remember why... IT WAS HOMEWORLD!
@@Rodney_1984 Well. X4 now is X3 but better... Egosoft learn from their mistakes in Rebirth, they applied all that and more in X4, to have an idea, Star Citizen players, play X4 as secondary game... What i can tell about X4 is that nothing beat be at the bridge of your battleship in a big battle againt a Xenon fleet, see your crew working and all, then simply go to the hangar and get a fighter and fly to hunt with the rest of your fleet, essentialy, is Homeworld, but from a perspective of one single person in the universe. Just don't forget to buy all DLCs, they are all worthed.
There are tons of space rts games, but none could beat the combat and storytelling of Homeworld and the only Rts which has battles as nefarious as Homeworld is actually X4 😂
Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2 were all first day purchases for me (and still have the original game discs). I even have the original Raider Retreat disc that was distributed later on where you chase after the raiders that actually blew up your home planet (it wasn't the Taiidan that did it directly - this mission isn't in the main game). Aside from the game itself, the most amazing thing was the 144-page manual, of which only the last 30-40 pages were about how to play the game. The rest was a history of the clans on Kharak, the political makeup of the world government, and so on. Still have all that as well. All that didn't stop me from getting the HW:Remastered Collectors Edition when it came out. Definitely wanting to play HW3 - and maybe get THAT collectors edition as well.
Been a fan of homeworld since i bought it on XP years ago ,still have the CD but could never get it to work on later windows, so when GOG brought out the remastered version i snapped it up lol , can't wait to play homeworld 3 , EPIC having it out for free is a must have for those who dont have it
The players patch is a lot easier to install than I thought it would be, even on EGS. You just dump the mod in the right folders and run it like any other mod.
Ahh remember 1999? When there was only one at most 2 notable out at any one time, and you could still manage to play "every" game? I sucked at rts at the time, will definitely give it a spin to see if my adult brain can handle it. I'm pretty sure i was using a matrox g400 back then too. ahhhhhhh. Wouldn't give back those years for anything. Technology was truly inspiring.
Never heard of this! Any game that includes Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings (agnus dei) instantly gets bonus points in my book! Definitely going to check this out. 😊
Great games series, you forgot to mention the abundance of mods for the game. I love personally the Star Trek mod its looks amazing and has so much detail its almost its own game

But Homeworld was always the original and I'm forever fond of it and the soundtrack - including the cracking Yes song in the end credits...#HomeworldForever
X4 looks really good, it has everything. Don't think I can run it on my system though.
I just made an epic account specifically for this. THAT is how much I respect your opinion after all these years
I just claimed it on the EGS. I never played it before so I look forward to checking it out when I have time.
There are tons of space rts games, but none could beat the combat and storytelling of Homeworld and the only Rts which has battles as nefarious as Homeworld is actually X4 😂
Thanks OA, I dl'ing now.... been a longgg time!
Thanks again.
Yes love homeworld. So thanks and got the free copy.
wow luckily u told me about this so I can finally get a copy of this amazing game~
Salvage Corvette.
I never hated a ship as much as the Salvage Corvette, and I have never loved a ship as much as the Salvage Corvette. :D
Yup bought it when I saw it remaster two years back. Also don't forget sins of a solar empire rebellion
Been a fan of homeworld since i bought it on XP years ago ,still have the CD but could never get it to work on later windows, so when GOG brought out the remastered version i snapped it up lol , can't wait to play homeworld 3 , EPIC having it out for free is a must have for those who dont have it
Cataclysm is something that takes us to space zombie modes!
Funnily enough was listening to the Yes track homeworld which was used on the game
My favored homeworld like game was "Nexus Jupiter incident"
Can't believe this remaster came out in 2015. Doesn't feel that old.
never played and missed it back in the day.. tempted now as i love the look of hm3, £2 on steam so if i ever have time
My favorite game of all time!
Campbell Lane provided a large part of the overall atmosphere for HW.
Amazing atmospheric game, came out same time as Tie Fighter, always hard to know which one to play!!!
I'm not into the game type, however the story had me enthralled, I followed the streams online, Deserts of Kharak is my favorite chapter.
Never heard of this! Any game that includes Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings (agnus dei) instantly gets bonus points in my book! Definitely going to check this out. 😊
It’s a great rts and lots of mods
I remember capturing all the ion frigates.. broke the warp out heh.
Great games series, you forgot to mention the abundance of mods for the game. I love personally the Star Trek mod its looks amazing and has so much detail its almost its own game
picked it up from epic, need to get round to play it.
good thing about it being an older game is im pretty sure my computer won't have a meltdown
It is an amazing game. I’ve been playing it for a long time.
