I will be watching this a few times. I wound up here because I am researching for an epic saga I am writing. A new Fictional look at world history beginning around 1500. But the story finances begin around 700 in a small village of Ama. Thank you again for such a wonderful telling of an art most know nothing of...perhaps my novel will help ?!
Love this vid so much. Yup, really appreciate you making the effort to speak in English. Ama has so much to teach us, not just in terms of sustainability, but also attitude. Love that an 84 year old woman can still be actively working and an integral part of society.
hi first of all thanks for this awesome video. I have a small question how does ama with the traditionnal rounded full face mask does to equalize ear drum when they dive 10 / 20 / or 30 meters ? Has far as i know i must pinch my nose to be able to equilizing but this kind of mask you have no access to your nose
Hi, thanks for leaving a comment to my video, and sorry for being late to write back to you. Yes, we cannot pinch our noses while using the Ama diving mask. So, that makes most of the Ama divers difficult to dive deeper than 10 metres, and only a few skilled ones can go get deeper and that let them catch more than others. I don't know how those skilled Ama divers equalize without pinching their noses. I hope I can learn how to do that one day.
@@RikakoTheAma I was wondering if they have a specific that amas used that i dont know about but i think it is what WE called hand Free equalization. Some poêle have there ear drum so easy to equalize that they juste have to inconciously put a little more pressure in the Mask by gently blowing with thé n'ose and it is enought for them to handle the ears. But for that you must have really easy ears
aahhhhh that seems like a hard but rewarding job!! thank you so much for uploading this, i've been curious about ama for a while now🥺✨ also 6:20 makes me want to visit Ijika so badly.. what a pretty beach!
I hope you keep on making more videos. I have always been fascinated by all bodies of water as fishing has been a very big part of my life. The world needs to know and understand that traditional methods are best in order to preserve our seas and resources.
Thanks for watching my video and leaving such a nice comment! Ama is such an unique lifestyle and it's worth being in this world now. I hope I can upload more videos to share the information about Ama. Please keep your eyes on that!
@@RikakoTheAmaIt is! I have always been fascinated with Japanese culture and have always loved to be near the water. I am always appreciative of what the ocean, lakes, and rivers give us. Currently in the US, we're dealing with the overpopulation of sea urchin as they are depleting the kelp forests. If only we had such a strong market for uni here, it would provide so many opportunities for others to dive and manage the population as it is becoming much more difficult for natural predators to control it. The poor abalone and other species dependant on kelp are declining in numbers due to it.
Wonderful video - Please keep them coming. I learnt so much from you. Let's see those wonderful elderly gals diving. I am full of admiration that Ama continue to work and earn a living. Most impressive video. Thank you.
Hi Rikako-san thank you so much for making this video, really appreciate it! It's so educative and lovely to watch. I'm Pari from Indonesia, have been interested in Ama since 2014. So, in September 2015 I traveled to Japan and visited Toba. I only spent a few days there exploring the city and accidentally met Ama in Osatsu. It was one of the happiest days of my life :) Hopefully I'm able to visit Ijika one day and meet you in person to learn about Ama culture :) Keep diving and also keep creating :D Because I'm looking for another content about Ama on this channel. Stay safe and healthy~
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! That's great to hear that you have visited Osatsu and met Ama there! I hope to see you one day in Ijika. I do look forward to seeing you!
Good question! I just uploaded a video for introducing the float a few days ago. Please check out my latest videoAma's Diving Gear "Tampo" if you are interested. I hope you like it!
Ehh this is a very good video, thank you for sharing. You speak English very well too! If you can, could you talk about the breathing technique please? I'm very interested in free diving. I would visit when possible:)
Thanks for watching my video! That's a good question. Yeah, I'll think of making a video of our breathing technique. It's actually pretty unique, and you may like it.
Thanks for showing sharing this with us. Sorry for being pedantic, but at 1:07 you mentioned that you do not use 'oxygen tanks'. I'd like to point out that scuba divers do not dive with oxygen tanks either. They dive with air tanks (occasionally enriched air, 'Nitrox'), but never, ever with oxygen tanks, as pure oxygen is toxic under pressure.
Hi rikako, i want to ask you some questions I am currently writing an history on the amas free divers and i wonder to know if it's possible to discus with you about your job. And maybe if you ok talking about you in the story ? Thank you for your answer and I hope you're having a good day
Hi, I'm glad to hear that you're interested in Ama and asking me to discuss about my job. But I'm currently busy taking care of my new born baby, and it's difficult to figure out scheduling when I can be available. So, that would be appreciated if you leave questions as comments or send me a DM to my instagram @ryoushi.yome.ritcha so that I can check it when I can. Thanks!

i'm trying to write a video about the history of ama san freedivers so maybe i will have many question for you 😊😊😊
What is the ring float made from?
Do Ama usually make that float themselves from something?
Maybe an old fishing float that they cut up?
