The Fight For New College

  • The hard Left has dominated the universities for generations. The movement has captured the academic disciplines, established ideologically driven bureaucracies, and put activism, rather than scholarship, at the center of academic life. The Left has long considered the university campus its own private domain, untouchable by political leaders-until now.
In a new short documentary, I tell the story of a small public college in Florida that’s become the opening move in a conservative counter-revolution. Earlier this year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed a new board majority, including me, to New College of Florida and tasked us with a simple, but audacious, mission: take over the failing school, bring in new leadership, and transform the institution into a liberal arts college in the classical tradition.
The move caused a firestorm. Conservatives cheered it on as an essential step in recapturing democratic institutions. Progressives denounced it as a violation of some principle or another. But, whatever one’s opinion, one thing is certain: the takeover of New College has changed the dynamics of America’s culture war and, if successful, will provide a model for a conservative counter-revolution across the nation. #NCF #newcollege #florida

Pay what you owe, 40 acres and a mule. Is banning books not limiting speech? How come the crack epidemic was treated differently than the opioid epidemic. Social programs were created to benefit poor white Americans.

As a recent graduate, I'd like to commend De Santis on his changes to New College. When I went there, often times class discussions would float about in a tangential way, leaving me not knowing what I was supposed to think at the end.
I had to think really hard on my own with the material that was given to me, and that created a lot of anxiety! Without professors willing to teach me what to believe (they would always play devil's advocate to "open my mind"), I had to create some concepts of my own, which was really exhausting!
Really, I almost didn't graduate because of the unnecessarily high standards the faculty held me to. I'm glad New College will be an entirely easier experience for everyone now!

This is an awesome update! Watching the direction this nation was moving in the past 4 years has been depressing. I haven't found much to be encouraged by, but this change at New College is truly encouraging. Thank you, Chris and everyone making these changes, for taking this mission so seriously.

    A microcosm of modern culture.
A slight change on the famous quote goes as follows:
"Hard times create strong (students), strong (students) create good times, good times create weak (students), and weak (students) create hard times."
Secularly known as the prosperity cycle and religiously as the pride cycle. We are at the tipping point.
“Tyranny is the endgame of prosperity.”- Bret Weinstein.
    Two case studies for contemplation:
    Evergreen vs New College.

I'm a 31yo Millennial and I was a normal liberal since my late teens. I left the left in 2021 because of the bizarre direction the left has gone down. I'm pretty socially conservative these days, I agree with conservatives 95% of the time except for 2 or 3 issues.
I think the left has gotten crayzee enough to where reasonable liberals can't take it anymore and are reconsidering their political leanings, I can only hope more Millennials and Gen Z come to the same realization as I did.

    I agree with Jesse Kelly…
Defund all Confucius and Grievance Studies programs and require institutions that offer them to provide their own student loans that aren’t funded with taxpayer money.
If that happens, you’ll see those programs eliminated immediately and fewer left-wing lunatics being churned out of our colleges and universities, which will ultimately turn our country back in the right direction.
I’m thankful for my governor, and thankful for you for fighting the good fight🙏🏻

The increased enrollment also came with a decrease in overall grade point average and test scores, markers that historically had helped the school earn a national reputation as a top public liberal arts college.
Overall, average ACT and SAT scores for the incoming fall class at New College are lower than last year. The overall GPA is also lower, according to data obtained by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network, and confirmed by the college.
National ranking fell from #76 to #100.

As a graduate of New College, I am frustrated and dismayed by De Santis's actions. No professor I ever took classes from tried to sway students' minds in a particular political direction. I had some professors who would speak well of the benefits that capitalism has brought to the world to temper some students' extremely liberal leanings.
While it is true that the student body could get over the top into being savage SJWs, is it really the faculty's job to micromanage student social interactions on that level?
In the end I am grateful to have graduated before this obviously totalitarian takeover took place and to have learned from so many intelligent, kind, and open-minded people during my time there.
As far as the low graduation rate goes, it's because all students were required to write an undergraduate thesis in their field of study that had to pass an exam held by a committee of three professors. Student graduation rates were low because New College students were held to such a high standard in order to graduate. It seems deliberately misleading to not mention this in the video

If it means pushing back against critical pedagogy, then I’d support it. “Conservative” may be a bad word to some people, but really this push back is just about critical theorists being upset that they are now being critiqued. Critique goes both ways.. it’s unrealistic to think that one can give it, while not also receiving it.
