I am an OLD Catholic School Teacher who is very sad about the state of these recent movements. I am concerned about what is being taught in our universities. Thank you for a well thought out discussion of real issues that affect our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. God bless you.🙏🙏

As a retired Catholic School elementary school principal, I am mystified by the lack of vision in our Catholic leaders. They do not see the move toward pantheism in honouring "the land' and abandoning the Gospel; in focusing on the lands of the indigenous people and not on the cross; focusing on self-identity instead of the discovery of God's word; focusing on earth activism while ignoring the poor right in front of them. We need courageous priests and bishops to speak of these things at mass on Sunday. We need to stop flying the pride flag; stop jumping at every political distraction; stop allowing anything and everything to take us away from raising God up in our homes, in our schools and in our workplaces!
Father, thank you for this conversation. I identify with Chris a whole lot, I am a 30 yr old man having a massive ideological shift and his words have helped me a lot. God bless you Father and Chris, thank you ♥️ 💙
The Left is not looking for a war, they are looking for a surrender. They are shocked and dismayed whenever it turns out to be a war. It is a war we will win, with God's help.
The hand of God was definitely in this amazing discussion!! This discussion left me with such hope for the culture, and our children. Thank you and God bless you both.
This all happened while we Catholics were sleeping. Time for US to wake up, embrace our Catholic Social Teaching, and use our updated understanding to spread peace wherever there is discord, which is everywhere.
The Bishop’s continued incredulity at the speed and ease with which wokeism took over the culture speaks to the inadequacy of Rufo’s thesis. It needs to be supplemented with a critique of the liberalism which preceeded it which shares so much philosophical and mythical content with communism, and furthermore lacks the political equipment to deal with any such subversive movement.
If only this remarkably thought provoking presentation could be shown nationwide before and after all the national news broadcasts each evening then such an astonishing penetration of, followed by the opening of, hearts, minds and most especially souls would be the blessed result! Thank you, Bishop Barron and Mr. Rufo for helping us to “see” then “verbalize”because I am certain there was a grand chorus of “That’s it!! This … this is what I’ve wanted to express and convey” … a very grateful chorus which echoed my own! I am sharing in Christ’s love for you tonight!
@@suhaiblone10 Your post is full of so many untruths, inaccuracies , and spelling and grammar mistakes that it's difficult to read or take seriously. But one thing I will point out is that Bishop Barron has both a Bachelor and Master's degrees in philosophy, plus multiple doctorates in other subjects. Pretty sure he knows a little bit more about philosophy (and everything else) than you do. I will pray that you become less hateful and antagonistic.
I experienced self serving injustice at a Jesuit school. That experience of mercilessness opened my eyes to Truth! Jesus Christ is Christo Rey! Preach it, Chris Rufo!
Group of women was led by Kate Millett (1934-2017), one of the early grandmothers of feminism’s second wave. She was the author of the “Sexual Politics,” . The “litany” went like this: “Why are we here today?” the chairwoman asked. “To make revolution,” they answered. “What kind of revolution?” she replied. “The Cultural Revolution,” they chanted. “And how do we make Cultural Revolution?” she demanded. “By destroying the American family!” they answered. “How do we destroy the family?” she came back. “By destroying the American patriarch,” they cried exuberantly. “And how do we destroy the American patriarch?” she probed. “By taking away his power!” “How do we do that?” “By destroying monogamy!” they shouted. “How can we destroy monogamy?” “By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution, abortion, and homosexuality!” they resounded.
This conversation was amazing. Bishop, you have filmed so many incredible videos. This one is right up there with the best of them. Thank you both. Now we need to bring this into the public domain of our politicians.
Continuing to listen, and continuing to be amazed at how Bishop Barron keeps asking “how did it happen so fast?”, while not connecting the dots that it’s because Barack Obama became president. He was born and raised in this ideology and marinated in it his whole life. He said what he knew people wanted to hear, and he pushed as far as he thought he could get away with. This ideology was his agenda from day one, and the fact that anyone doesn’t realize that at this point is astonishing to me. He appointed believers in this ideology throughout the federal government, and many of them are still there. And corporate America bent the knee on all of this stuff because that’s what they do for whoever is in power. Which was Obama. That’s how all of this happened. We knew about his associations with people like Frank Marshall Davis, Derrick Bell, Jeremiah Wright, and Bill Ayers before he was elected. Those things don’t happen by accident. He never repudiated or disavowed any of them, or their ideas. In office, the most frequent visitor to the White House was Al Sharpton, who had been completely discredited and disavowed by everyone for decades due to his disgraceful record. The far left saw his election as the go sign, and sprinted forward. The Ferguson riots happened when Obama was still in office. And so on. Anyone who thinks this stuff suddenly sprang to life in 2020 had to be sleeping for 12 years before that.
An excellent and timely discussion by two highly intellectual contemporary thinkers. Politicians, academics, and all citizens: we should all listen to this talk.
Wokism is a revolutionary ideology we need to be aware of and expose its great dangers today. Thanks for this discussion and book! Should be widely viewed to understand the nihilism today.
Profoundly enlightening. We've witnessed with total dismay and alienation many of the developments discussed - both in neighboring Portland - mentioned here - and in our small community nearby. As old anti-war anti-poverty civil rights activists we share so many of the understandings explained here. Thank you for this book and discussion. Please keep on exposing the truth.
Truth is time, place and circumstance; the source of truth is oneself; the measure of truth is one's feelings. Benedict nee Ratzinger hit the nail on the head, when he said, "The relativists' impulses are totalitarian."
Another critical look and discussion must be had regarding the distortions of thought and action of both the left side and the right; each feed the worst of us and disallow the ability to seek truth, beauty and justice.
I would give this conversation 1000 thumbs up if it was possible. This discussion is so clarifying. This discussion should be positioned on every strategic platform that will allow clear thinking to be reestablished. This discussion needs to be reduced to al few clarifying slogans that dispel the Imploding self destructive, current zeitgeist. We are in desperate need of this message being placed in all fundamentalist petitions in this country. You go, Bishop Barron!!!
This was great! Really appreciated the call out that leftist ideology is anti-human, something I’ve been saying for several years now. It’s very disturbing stuff. Such a great conversation.
What a great conversation ✝️ If I could sum up the difference between ideologies is 1 true social justice has at it’s heart Love “Willing the good of the other” and woke ideology has at it’s root the illusion of self, but in reality is about bureaucratic control dressed in liberation. When we remove God we create a mass depression and the loss of self rather than knowing that our sense of self is inherently based in our Spiritual health.
Bishop Barron is a brilliant Catholic priest who is not afraid to step outside the ideological box of faith. If one is willing to see religion as a cultural construction (thx Alpha), then he can grasp what is at stake here. Christianity is the foundation of Western civilization. If we lose it, we could lose our civilization. Bishop Barron calls the faith a compelling and beautiful argument for leading a disciplined life. Only this type of discipline can lead to the freedom of high achievement, that is needed to serve the common good. Rufo understands this and adds that the ultimate answer to nihilism is faith. He makes clear that academia has abandoned the trajectory of the West by dismissing the pursuit of high ideals (truth, beauty, justice). These ideals served the common good. Instead, the Woke promote elitism and stultifying bureaucracy. When a Black child doesn't learn math, because he/she is being fed a diet of useless ideology, the system feels no shame. They serve the bureaucracy in a self-righteous loop. They have abandoned the moral lessons taught by the Judeo-Christian tradition and promoted by Western civilization for 1,000's of years. (Promote the best and brightest, so that they may serve the good of all. Democracy and capitalism were built on this ideological foundation. We are nothing without it.) The Woke's ideological departure should have been rejected by academia becuase it is an affront to our civilization and to our natural righs, not embraced with the enthusiasm of Smeagol toward the ring. Anyway, thanks for sharing this insightful piece. God willing, those in power will begin to listen to reason.
8:13 Anybody whose ever pursued anything artistic -- from oil painting to combat sports -- understands the brilliance of what Bishop Barron expresses as "true freedom." Bruce Lee said "Read the books, then forget the books." Mastery is what happens when fundamentals have been internalized.
@achinthmurali5207 Just as a painter, musician or sculptor expresses their innermost feelings through their medium, the martial artist expresses his innermost thoughts and feelings through his art form. The various painting schools such as the cubists, the realists, and the impressionists have their analogous schools in martial arts, such as wrestlers, boxers, taekwondo practitioners and so on. Arts are creative processes through which people learn about themselves, others and the world around them. They are all cultural pursuits, which enrich and enliven the human experience. The world’s most ubiquitous and oldest sport is wrestling, a combat sport, which is probably as old as cave painting, the oldest fine art!
For those who for some reason are doubting, try not to judge! This is a valuable discussion. Don’t let your political preconceptions ruin this for you. The most accurate picture here is: Chris Rufo is a self-proclaimed CRT critic, and he does a darn good job at that I might add. I don’t see any room to judge, especially since we’re all sinners here. So let’s have an open mind and glean what we can from this offering by the Bishop’
...Well whoever is monitoring Bishop's YT is deleting comments that are asking legitimate questions and grievances. Hard to have an "open-mind" when the monitor is silencing critics who are also on the path to "Truth". smh.
Teleology - "1. The factor or quality of being purposeful. 2. Purpose or design as shown in nature...4. The doctrine that all things in nature were made to fulfill a plan or design." (1983 World Book Dictionary). Good word to know!
Dr. King was no Marxist, but he was no social conservative either. He regularly criticized capitalism, militarism and structural racism. He advocated for birth control, accepted the Margaret Sanger Award from Planned Parenthood (look it up), advocated against prayer in public schools, supported black reparations. He was a secular social democrat highly critical of class exploitation. He died rallying for striking AFSCME workers in Memphis. His speech against the Vietnam War was steeped in a Christian progressivism and a scathing anti-capitalist indignation. Different from the BLM protests 2020? Certainly, but for different reasons. King was an economic populist who placed a stronger emphasis on class towards the end of his life. His views were more sophisticated and philosophically developed. Yes, he was deeply spiritual and his speeches were inundated with biblical themes and rhetoric. However, his Christianity much more resembled Cornel West or James Cone than anyone on today's American right. Need to be clear eyed and real about where exactly he stood on many questions. I also think you're giving today's left-wing activists more credit than they deserve. Social media has dumbed down the culture considerably, with the left certainly not being immune. Most BLM protesters have no idea what postmodernism or cultural relativism are. Many probably have heard of the black panthers and Angela Davis, but I'd doubt they've read much of the written work by such individuals. Today's activists are not as ideological as many on the Right seem to think they are. Activists in the 1960's were reading and debating ideology. They read Marx, Lenin, Luxemburg. They debated Marcuse and Adorno. They wrote works like the Port Huron Statement. You wouldn't see any writing today with that level of sophistication. Ta Nehisi Coates and Ibram X. Kendi are not at the level of Angela Davis, James Baldwin or Huey Newton. Once there was a romanticism and eloquence to the written prose of the left. I don't see much of that today. There's been a dumbing down on the left just as there's been a dumbing down with every other corner of the political spectrum (or even the Church). Social media has produced flame wars and competing for likes at the expense of ideological depth. It's a shallow emotionally charged politic today, with little substance to offer increasingly lost and disoriented generations. The siphoning of individuals into their little social media bubbles have further broken down dialogue to where there isn't much of a philosophical or ideological discourse at all anywhere. Now it's who can yell the loudest and make the most emotionally charged arguments wins the day. Dynamic discussions of opposing viewpoints are rare or non-existent. People now starve for them. I don't see any William Buckley's of today's right-wing willing to have a substantive debate with a today's equivalent of a Noam Chomsky. Those battles of ideas were more stimulating and common place back then than they are now. Today everything is too personalized and mediocrity has triumphed on every side of the political spectrum. It's unfortunately reflective of the decline of Western society and the disappearance of a culture where people use to be able to talk and communicate with each other. As John Stuart Mill would assert if dynamic disagreement disappears, so too does reason. Well if social media degenerates our ability to talk with one another, so too goes our ability to think and rationalize. A dumbing down of our entire culture is the tragic consequence of technology that destroyed the possibilities for comradely disagreement and dissension.
The disagreement and dissension of the late '60s- early '70s was anything BUT comradely, much like 2020. Cop killing , campus bombings, rioting & drug abuse was rampant, or have you forgotten? Don't romanticize anarchy.
Thank you for this thoughtful comment. It seems that the dumbing down is a feature, not a bug; the authoritarians' power only increases the more mediocre our lives and discourse become. To be frank I think there are issues and institutions that can't be mentioned in discussions like this for fear of the whole thing being undermined. Are only the universities at fault for propagating ultimately reductive/destructive ideas? What about the intertwining of state power at these universities, and corporations for that matter? What does Chris Rufo mean by "revolutionary", and, if the institutional capture has been so successful, then isn't he himself advocating for the upending of some systems as they currently exist? Also, I am no expert at all, but talking about Black American "radicals" of the 20th century takes the prevailing narrative for granted; yes, there were those who, no matter their ideological nuance, did resort to violence, but wasn't it much more interesting than just "bad" activists vs "good" activists? That seems to be what the opening of your comment alludes to, anyway. And what is the prescription ultimately given here in this video? To some degree it seems evangelical in nature, calling for individuals and communities to turn toward the transcendent-- to turn to Christ. But, politically, is the message really just that we spend too much on welfare programs? We can talk all day long about the failure of government in all sorts of arenas, but why is this the only one dared to mention specifically?
Communism has infiltrated the Democratic Party. They pray on the weak minded voter. They’re primary objective is to destroy America from within. It’s a war now…
I'm a sinner, I'm Catholic, I'm woke, I'm a woman, I'm a veteran, I'm American , I'm Black, I believe teaching black history and slavery truths IS American history. There ya go. Have a great day🎉
I'm a sinner, I'm an orthodox Catholic, I am not Marxist, anti-family WOKE, I'm a married heterosexual man, I'm a USMC veteran, I'm American 2nd generation Czechoslovakian, I'm Caucasian, I believe teaching black history and slavery truths is part of American history, I believe that the way many people try to flavor everything that they say with their ideology makes it painful to have a discussion and therefore cant talk to each other, There you go, Have a great day.
Where did you get the blatantly false idea that people who criticize wokeism are against teaching black history or slavery? That’s an absurd straw man. I’m sorry but you’re being very intellectually lazy and not truly wanting to understand the viewpoints of those who criticize wokeism as anti-Christian.
Well we can agree teaching black history and slavery is American history . But making policy on the sins of our grandfathers is not biblical or sensical . Peace
The term "woke" was originally used in the 1920's in reference to 9 black youths being falsely accused, and unjustly convicted of raping two white girls in Scottsboro Alabama. It was used as a warning to African Americans to be aware of racial injustice. The concept of "social justice" was first introduced by Msgr. Luigi Taparelli in the Vatican during the 1840s. He established the natural laws principle that corresponded to the evangelical principle of "brotherly love"; the duty one has to one other's self. We have been inundated with the false accusations that all of academia has been inoculated with Marxist ideology. I went to public universities, during the 1960s and1970s when there were far more teachers ascribing to the capitalist ideology than the Marxist one. I find it interesting that the bishop and his guest talk about teleology, yet do not consider where the guest's propositions, if acted upon, will lead the American society. One can deny our history, and the history of the Catholic Church's institution of the Discovery Doctrine, but cannot erase those facts from history.
In Latin America the situation was not similar to what you describe. Here universities started to be heavily injected with marxism/ left ideas in the 70s. Today the situation has reached the highest point.
Deep , complicated discussions with many long tentacles. I wish I could share Rufos thinking on the future outcome of this societal , cultural, and religious breakdown. The breakdown of the family. It all starts at home. The breakdown of the Catholic Church due to the horrific abuse. We are unraveling every second. I really hate to say it, I don’t thinks there’s any coming back to the fraying of our society, culture, family life , or religion. I feel we are in the spiral . This is one exhausted, confused , angry, and very sad world . I’m not usually such a pessimist, how do we go back? We can’t .Going forward is looking terrifying at the moment.Thank you for this discussion.
Still, we have to keep going foward without looking back because other than HIM there is no one with words of eternal life. We Christians have to realize that we are currently waging a war, a spiritual war, where the love of Jesuschrist is our most formidable and only weapon. We follow HIM with those who truly received the Apostolic Tradition...
I believe the words “woke” and “wokeism” are overused labels. To me, we should always be aware of our history, of mistakes of the past, to do and be better than we were in the past. This is not being woke or suffering from wokeism. This is knowing where we have been to move forward as Jesus intended. We are all made in the image of God and yet somehow being aware of our impact on the environment, and knowing about injustices of the past become labeled as being “woke” and this term interferes with movements to make this world a better place. There is no mercy in a discussion that blanketly labels. It is quite frankly insulting to be called “woke” when we are addressing the seven themes within our Catholic Social Teachings. I believe we would be better off naming things what they are be it environmentalist, pro life, pro-choice, pro rights for LGBQT, pro-traditional family, pro-civil rights for equity and Justice regardless of your nationality or color, pro white supremacy, pro-nondiscrimination instead of a blanket label. When we use “woke” our minds automatically move to Marxism or Socialist. Call it what the ideology is and then debate it’s merit. Many Catholic social Justice advocates are people who want to lives their lives following the example of Jesus. Love, compassion, mercy, wisdom, understanding of others, counsel, fortitude, knowledge piety, and Chaste Fear of God. This is not being “woke.” This is living our lives following Jesus’ commandment to Love God above all and Loving our neighbor as He loves us. Just my thoughts. Praying for clean hearts, wisdom and intellect to discern, and to come together as one under God.
So Jesus would have dresses up as a drag queen and erotically danced in front of children and suggested they read gay pornography? Jesus would have taught communist propaganda? You have been lied to.
actually the term "woke" is a great blanket term to describe the deconstructionist agenda being deployed on America. And it cloaks itself in compassionate ideals in order to confuse and frankly, trick, well meaning people such as yourself.
Good day Bishop Lovely conversation. What you and Christopher discuss are themes that are alluded to by the Catholic scholar, Abigail Favale. I know you would enjoy conversing with her
56:00 I was on a date with a professor from a very prestigious women's college in Western, MA not long ago. And I asked her, "What do you think the highest value (telos) of the university is?" knowing the correct answer is "to seek knowledge/truth" but curious to see what she would say. She paused and thought about it for a second before saying, "To make everyone feel included!" I laughed and said, "But universities are institutions that build their reputations through *excluding* more people than they include. How can their highest value be inclusion?" She admitted that that was a good point and so I finally ended the game by asking her, "Don't you think the highest value of a university is the pursuit of knowledge/truth?" And she went, "Oh yeah!! I hadn't even thought of that but that makes perfect sense!"
Just jumping into listening to this, and very glad to see this conversation. I'd like to state - or perhaps reiterate, if Mr. Rufo touches on this - that, as much as Wokeism constitutes a moral danger in itself, and there is much to find objectionable, there is a related danger that is at least as great, if not greater, which Catholics should be as on their guard toward as they are to Wokeism. As Mr. Rufo mentions, the roots of this ideology are in academia and have been spread by public intellectuals (using Thomas Sowell's definition of people whose primary products of work are ideas). So, this is not a grassroots movement, and anything that appears grassroots about it is funded by wealthy, interested individuals in large part, backing ~60 years of academic development. The question to ask is why - what are the proponents and beneficiaries of the spread of CSJT, CRT, SEL, and related outputs seeking from their spread? Pew Research very recently released a survey which found that 75% of Democrats believe it is within the authority of the government to censor "hateful" speech. The senders of the Social Justice message have engendered these opinions in those who received the message. Tracking and monitoring are necessary to this end, and married to larger initiatives of global "leadership," with climate agendas being the other notable front. Observe the effect, and infer the motive. Social Justice is an emotionalized riling up of receptive sectors of the public, cloaked in academic/intellectual authority, for the purpose of attaining political and social power for its advocates and their allies, with the appearance of legitimacy through public demand, to be wielded against the public at large. Don't be distracted by the subordinate goal.
Based from where? Only recent neo-fascist I’ve noticed are in Australia, small as they are. If you’re suggesting American nationalists are somehow fascist (not saying they’re inherently positive either), that’s a fringe talking point and more akin to a red herring.
Honestly as someone who was in this woke mess for years. I'm 27 I've been taught a lot of this since 6th grade. This has been here for years. I was even part of my high schools gay straight alliance in the early 2000s Everyone is always like "what about the lock down made this explode" and I'm always so confused by that because to me. Gender ideology, CRT, and Wokeness has always been there. It's been in public schools for years. You guys are talking about this like it's a new wound, when my generation has been bleeding out for years. Our Elders gave us poison and wonder why the world is so sick. And I hate that I didn't wake up to it sooner. And I thank God for bringing me out of it. And I'm not pointing the finger entirely at the older generation. A lot of them have helped me get out of the mindset the public school brain washed me into. I just wish THOSE specific elders were the ones I got has a kid. I got a mixed bag of them. And I'm privileged in that sense.
Stop playing the Adam and Eve blame game. Parents are trying to do the best they can with what they are given. I’m happy you woke up to this but don’t blame anyone. You learn as you go
well at least you're coming out of it now! It may be a rough ride for you for a while, since you will be acting counter culture to many of your peers, but with God's help you'll find your way. You'll find that young women who tend toward conservative values are usually happier in the long run.
Bishop, thank you. Your comment “teleology disappeared with modernity struck me. I hope you review the Barbie Movie which is about teleology and how we cannot escape it in spite of the best efforts of the feminists. Even the feminist utopia, Barbieland, resulted in “irrepressible thoughts of death.”
The next book that needs to be written is a concrete outline of what needs to be done as an individual. We need a road map and game plan like the Neo-Marxist have. We need more specificity otherwise as an individual we feel hopeless to making a change.
If MLK Jr.'s notion of the Great Society is so flawed, what alternative does Chris offer to deal with the very real problems those folks face in their housing projects? I'd agree a ballooning welfare state is not ideal, but it seems to me we have to look to those who have clearly profited off of the misery of the poor, if we are to actually address these fundamental problems within our country. It frustrates me that so many smart and articulate people fail to connect these dots.
The issue with these culture war takes, which I am so sad to see someone like Bishop Barron engaging in, is that they offer little in actual substance in answer. They point fingers, talk about how horrid the other side is, but offer no solutions or plans. This happens on both sides. Sadly, this video is little more than populist rage bait. The entire discussion is based on a bad faith approach to the opposition. There is no pursuit at understanding the other side, their argument, or addressing the actual claims. Rather, it just seeks to demonize without nuance or understanding. If you want to see it at work, just look at most of the comments.
Bishop B might consider a discussion with Iain McGilchrist I would think some interesting things might emerge . Rufo might have a look at some western European countries also .
Bishop Barron, you gotta invite James Lindsay to one of your shows, he has dug deep into the leftist metaphysics and ideology. It would be fantastic to watch you guys talk. He would offer immense insight into leftist thinking.
@@russellmiles2861 Can you demonstrate anywhere in canon law where it says bishops can’t speak on social issues. The new evangelization is designed to engage with the culture. It’s the Enemy who wants to bracket the Faith completely out of society and to be quiet.
What needs to be done is to identify wokism in all its forms as a religion, like Marxism, a secular religion. And then demand the first amendment clause against the establishment of religion be applied to it in the same manner it is applied to other religions, by governments, schools, employers, etc.
I feel like the conflict between the Church and wokism ultimately boils down to the conflict between a metaphysics based in truth and a metaphysics based in power. The West's loss of confidence in its ability to know truth inherently left the field open to metaphysics of power -- and metaphysics of power always ultimately end up breeding conflict given their lack of any objective standard by which to judge competing claims. The problem, of course, is that the impossibility of rationally convincing anyone who holds to a metaphysics of power out of it traditionally led to that metaphysics being suppressed through the use of power, which only served as evidence that everything ultimately comes down to power! And that leaves supporters of the metaphysics of truth in a quandary, because rationality doesn't work on their adversaries and they rightly suspect that force is counterproductive. The one way out, oddly enough, would seem to be desire. Metaphysics of power entail the primacy of the will, so the best way to disentangle people from their snare is to convince them that they don't actually want to live in that sort of world.
The metaphysics of power is ultimately irrational. If the world was truly built on the principles of might makes right, then our species would have died out thousands of years ago. There had to be some measure of cooperation and mutuality to a significant enough degree to permit our continued existence. But you’re right, a worldview based on truth and rationality is not going to get as much traction as one that supports subjective rationalizations
@@Seliz463 The problem is that the metaphysics of power considers rational argument to be nothing more than a hypocritical method of seizing power and therefore doesn't care about whether it's rational or not. =/ With that said, I think a lot of people would sacrifice support of their own subjective rationalizations if they understood that they could only get it at the cost of unmitigated vulnerability to everyone capable of harming them in the pursuit of their own subjective rationalizations.
This is interesting. Toward the end, there was the talk @ losses in education, other instirutions, but the loss of sense of responsibility is one of our major losses. This book by Mr. Rufo would be a good read. Negative critic: in this interview, Bishop Barron, you needed to put down that pen!!
Thank you Bishop Barron for fighting the good fight. Pope St. John Paul II said "Not be afraid!" 1 Peter 3:13-14: "13 Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them, Here in Canada, in Ontario to be precise ("governed" by the, so called, "conservatives"), we have to witness a "crazy" situation. Last year, a "katholic" school called the police on a 16 year old, now 17, and this minor got arrested: “And I simply said you can identify as you please, but the fact of the matter is God created male and female,” said Josh in an interview. “That was considered bullying,” he said, adding that he later learned that at least one person identified by a different gender in the class." "A suspension notice was followed by an exclusion order which was followed by a trespassing notice. In February, when Josh tried to go back to school believing he was allowed to, the school called the police, who arrested him. He was later released without charge." "Josh, a thoughtful and independently minded young man, wanted to appeal the disciplinary actions himself, but was told by the board that his parents would have to appeal." We are told by the government that parents do not have a "say" in their "minor" child's wish to transition to another gender YET, here, a 16 old, disciplined by a "katholic" school board, is told that he can NOT appeal the disciplinary actions, that his parents will have to appeal. What a sad joke! This young man said exactly what the Bible teaches and Pope Francis has, innumerable times, talked about. What kind of fanatic wokes are "sitting" at, supposedly, Catholic school boards? So much for religious freedom, more so at a Catholic school! The fact is that these individuals have no idea about the "meaning" of the word "freedom" and dare to call anyone who does not agree with them, "fascists" (they also have NO idea about what fascism is about). Wokes talk kid's "safe" space.. Where is this kid's "safe" space. He does not have the right to one?
Everyone who cares about the future needs to understand the past. READ the book: AMERICAN CULTURAL REVOLUTION. This book is a wonderful understanding of what has transpired in our society over the last 50 years. The question is what is the solution to turn this around? When banks start to withhold loans to profitable businesses because they haven’t hit demographic guidelines it may be the end. DEI needs to be removed from the corporations and universities.
Christopher Rufo articulates his opinions on wokeism and the culture wars so well. Most of us, even supposedly progressives, do not see that the culture wars have eclipsed the class war.
yep. The Marxisits saw, with the rise of the great middle class, that class envy would no longer work so they came up with Critical Theory and the idea of identity politics. IOW, grievance mongering.
America in the 70 is the best, family value number 1. Eat together, family time, how kid should behave, etc it's kind of wash brain but people become good society. Now society trying to do whatever they want very different than Christian value. We as Christian should make earth just like in heaven, how to do that we need to listen what Jesus said.
Great interview. Bishop Barron is always at the vanguard. I worry that Wokists are controlling the field whereas Conservatives are just reacting to lastest thing. How could so much ground have been lost in such a short time? Sorry for the negativity! God Bless and Protect Bishop Barron.
While I have found Mr. Rufo’s perspective compelling, I am not a fan of his policy prescriptions. Using the power of the state to ‘win’, in lieu of using the power of ideas, will not end well. I would ask Bishop Barron to consider interviewing David French as someone coming from a similar worldview, but with very different suggestions.
A really interesting and important point raised around 1:00:00 relates to the desire that a government ‘run’ everything about society and the economy to ensure the equitable outcome. Often those who advocate for this don’t necessarily have an issue with the degree a government might need to use coercion to achieve it. The point being the creation of a pseudo-providence. A man made, fabricated providence to supersede the natural (or Divine) providence of existence being sustained in all its macro and micro glory. God Creates and Sustains is like holy water to a demon, it burns and they might try to provide a man-made alternative to divert people from God. As if we don’t have a tough enough time discerning what we think might be a divine (or natural) providence, and not see the fabricated reality (presented via TV and Gov media releases) which constitutes an increasing proportion of our individual and collective world-view
The U.S. as a whole took its collective eye off the ball after the Wall came down. I remember telling my colleagues in the military at the time that just because a wall gets taken down doesn't mean the ideas that created the need for that wall have gone away. I would argue the long march through the institutions actually started with the first iteration of the progressive movement at the turn of the 20th Century. It got a boost when American academics went on Stalin's magical mystery tour in the 1920s and came back with glowing reports on the great utopian vision of the Soviet Union. They were attracted to it by their idealism, naiveite, and the realization that the bureaucratic state gave them a chance to assume their rightful place and lord and master over the unwashed masses. It was a way to grab power from the greedy capitalists who were able to do something they were not, actually create something. The next large bump was the launch of Sputnik in the 1950s. The country went into a panic over the perceived knowledge gap and STEM became all the rage, receiving more money and taking precedence over subjects like history and civics. Liberal arts became an uncontested field for the Marxists to plant their flag and from that point on left-wing ideology was painted as mainstream and traditional notions became archaic. The thing is, history and civics is where the culture gets set. Political leaders don't generally come from the engineering and math departments. Our children have been and still are being taught a false version of history and by extension they have had their true identity stripped from them. People are mailable, the truth is not. But young people are being told you can be whatever you want without realizing they are being guided by sinister forces who are guiding them to a very specific location. That's on us. We allowed it by being comfortable, by ceding ground in the culture war time and time again, ground the other side will defend to the death. Now? Now we want a quick fix. That won't happen. Do we have the will and patience to correct the mistakes of the past and the humility to ask God for His forgiveness and assistance? That will determine the outcome.

Am very glad we will have a voice like Bishop Barron at the Synod on Synodality!
Thank you to the Word on Fire ministry and Chris Rufo for this incredible contribution to our understanding❤❤ Greetings from México

I have followed Rufo's work for the past 4 years or so. He is brilliant!

Group of women was led by Kate Millett (1934-2017), one of the early grandmothers of feminism’s second wave. She was the author of the “Sexual Politics,” . The “litany” went like this:
“Why are we here today?” the chairwoman asked.
“By taking away his power!”
“How do we do that?”
“By destroying monogamy!” they shouted.
“How can we destroy monogamy?”
“By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution, abortion, and homosexuality!” they resounded.

I pray for both of you to keep speaking about these topics. I pray for a new great awakening.

Chris Rufo is an American gem. Thank you for interviewing him.
I bought your book Bishop Barron... looking forward to it.

Teleology - "1. The factor or quality of being purposeful. 2. Purpose or design as shown in nature...4. The doctrine that all things in nature were made to fulfill a plan or design." (1983 World Book Dictionary). Good word to know!
Telos = purpose/reason/end
Logos = word/reason/logic/study of.
I think Bishop Barron should keep discussing these very important subjects and continue to provide guidance and leadership to his flock
Education hero!
Amazing points around 51:00 regarding primary virtues versus circumstantial virtues.
I am sharing this to many people. It is a wonderful dialogue.

Excellent, excellent conversation!
Two thumbs up. Excellent discussion. 🇨🇦
Preach!
🎯 I laugh when I think of how Chomsky and Vidal got under Buckley's skin.

Where did you get the blatantly false idea that people who criticize wokeism are against teaching black history or slavery? That’s an absurd straw man. Your presentation has made it crystal clear! The collapse os education in our times is undeniable. Thank you, Bishop Barron and Chris Rufo
“Ethnomathematics.” Wow. We are living in crazy times.
Today the situation has reached the highest
point.
Thank you
Deep , complicated discussions with many long tentacles.
Great conversation.
This interview was so good. I bought the book at about 30 minutes in. Thank you!
🙌🙌🙌
So Jesus would have dresses up as a drag queen and erotically danced in front of children and suggested they read gay pornography? Jesus would have taught communist propaganda?
You have been lied to.
actually the term "woke" is a great blanket term to describe the deconstructionist agenda being deployed on America. And it cloaks itself in compassionate ideals in order to confuse and frankly, trick, well meaning people such as yourself.
It's a very blantant cry for Jesus.
Superb, thanks.
A great key to all we believe is the imago Dei. If we are nothing but a gnat or speck of dust, we have no rights.
And nothing ultimately matters. Without God, there is no meaning, only the collision of atoms.
Good day Bishop
Lovely conversation. What you and Christopher discuss are themes that are alluded to by the Catholic scholar, Abigail Favale. I know you would enjoy conversing with her
The only thing I disagree with is when he said we are going to alternative markets for education. Let’s take our educational system back!!!!
56:00
I was on a date with a professor from a very prestigious women's college in Western, MA not long ago.
Really appreciate this video.
Very good! Loved this!!!!!!!
Bishop Barron needs to also do an episode on the rise of neo-fascism and its roots.
Based from where? Only recent neo-fascist I’ve noticed are in Australia, small as they are. If you’re suggesting American nationalists are somehow fascist (not saying they’re inherently positive either), that’s a fringe talking point and more akin to a red herring.

Even the feminist utopia, Barbieland, resulted in “irrepressible thoughts of death.”
Just a thought, woke is NOT classical Marxism and this gives it the advantage of going ways more nuanced and flexible than its parent.
Correct. It is exponentially worse.

With that said, I think a lot of people would sacrifice support of their own subjective rationalizations if they understood that they could only get it at the cost of unmitigated vulnerability to everyone capable of harming them in the pursuit of their own subjective rationalizations.
Yes. Western civilisation is currently in the middle of a death struggle between Aquinas and Nietzsche.
Pope St. John Paul II said "Not be afraid!" 1 Peter 3:13-14:
"13
Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good?
14
But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them,
Here in Canada, in Ontario to be precise ("governed" by the, so called, "conservatives"), we have to witness a "crazy" situation. Last year, a "katholic" school called the police on a 16 year old, now 17, and this minor got arrested:
“And I simply said you can identify as you please, but the fact of the matter is God created male and female,” said Josh in an interview. “That was considered bullying,” he said, adding that he later learned that at least one person identified by a different gender in the class."
"A suspension notice was followed by an exclusion order which was followed by a trespassing notice. In February, when Josh tried to go back to school believing he was allowed to, the school called the police, who arrested him. He was later released without charge."
"Josh, a thoughtful and independently minded young man, wanted to appeal the disciplinary actions himself, but was told by the board that his parents would have to appeal."
We are told by the government that parents do not have a "say" in their "minor" child's wish to transition to another gender YET, here, a 16 old, disciplined by a "katholic" school board, is told that he can NOT appeal the disciplinary actions, that his parents will have to appeal.
“The kingdom of heaven is not of this world” you can never root out evil in the hearts of men. We can only seek the lords mercy
A great discussion sadly it was difficult to hear Bishop Barron.
Great interview. Bishop Barron is always at the vanguard. I worry that Wokists are controlling the field whereas Conservatives are just reacting to lastest thing. How could so much ground have been lost in such a short time? Sorry for the negativity! God Bless and Protect Bishop Barron.
Talk to Dr. Cornel West. Would be a great discussion!
Will these ideas burnout before they take the whole society down? That is what keeps me up at night. Faith lets me get back to sleep.
A better title would include the whole western world rather than just America.
Lol who decided on that wide shot at the beginning...
✨🙏🏼✨
The U.S. as a whole took its collective eye off the ball after the Wall came down.
