Dime is my favorite guitarist, he was insane he is unmatched to this day. His tone was great and probably one the most iconic, and man... you naild that! Amazing job!
so i did some more diggin and this is basically as good as it gets i was able to try dimes gear with the settings used in the dime plugin AND i own the CFH amplitube plugin and tested around with that thing using a real randall cab and the differences are tiny you really get that low mid crunch, i've also found out that if you use the randall rg1503 sounds almost identical to the rg100es whereas the rg1003h needs this videos settings to sound correct (the yt channel borderwars made a video about that just recently) so yeah good luck on your quest fellow tone chasers
@@donsmith5385 Oh for sure. 80's and 90's technology was hand-crafted, or if it was mass produced, the accuracy and consistency across each amp wasn't guaranteed. Now, with modern tech, it's a lot easier for them to knock these things out like crazy and get them all, for the most part, to sound and respond the same.
Yeah that’s normal, sorry for the late response haha! Totally normal though, most amps have that effect during their start up sequence. It usually happens because when the amp is powered on, it delivers an electrical signal to everything as a circuit test to make sure everything is adequately receiving power.
Good playing. I use a BOSS Gt-1 with two combo amps (L & R stereo) using a cranked up pan delay effect at 6 ms…I tweet a 7 band GEQ to get it the close as I can to Dime’s tone and it’s the closest I’ve heard of most rigs.
I just started using the new BOSS Katana Mk II 100 watt 2x12 combo, and wow. You can pretty much achieve any tone you want and it’s super easy to use and it has everything included all in one. BOSS is definitely running the amp game right now if you ask me!
my tip after having one for a year is use an overdrive with it, put the tone knob and level all the way up on the DS-1 and then distortionto tatse and then just go full blast on basically everything on your overdrive
Thanks a lot! Sorry for the late response, been super busy, what advice I would give for the DS1 or really any distortion/overdrive pedal is you gotta find the sweetspot between using it in a modern fashion as a boost pedal, and using it in the original fashion of allowing the pedal to add distortion to your tone. Dime's tone was super aggressive, but he actually used a lot less distortion than most people think. The majority of his tone is comprised from just the right amount of gain and boost, and properly dialing in the EQ so it accents and compliments all of the tight low ends as well as the mids and uppers
vidmisLive thank you! Glad I could help, and yeah definitely do some research into pedals, though Dime didn’t uses a ton of pedals, the ones he did use helped a lot!
one thing about the dime pickups ive noticed that is some pictures dimebag had his dime bucker flipped in some of his guitars so if u wanna get that dime sound ye flip it around
True, but there is a bit more to it! Dime did flip the bridge pickup, which was a Bill Lawrence 500XL that he used in almost all of his guitars. He would flip it so that the magnet's polarity was reversed and this created a brighter, sharper, and punchier tone. But you wouldn't be able to accomplish the entirety of his tone just by flipping the pickup, it 100% helps with the attack his sound had. Insuring that you also have the proper EQ settings on both amps and pedals is really where the importance comes from. However, as always, nobody will ever be able to master or duplicate Dime's tone perfectly, because tone doesn't come from the equipment or the guitar, or even the pickups. It all comes from the fingers, and only Dime had Dime's fingers!
None of it is in the effects loop! I personally never really experimented with the FX loop, but it’s worth messing around with and comparing the differences!
Hey question for you man, I just got this head today. When you turn yours on n first fire it up do all three channels flash quick before the green channel lights up? Mine does and just wondering if this is normal?
I disagree with your opinion on the wah pedal..He did also use that just for tone itself, not just for effects. As a filter I guess? it helped a lot with CFH tone.
There were instances where he used it as a sort of shaper/sculpter for his tone, especially with his squeals. That was kinda his own personal trick, but fundamentally, he didn’t use it frequently for his dry rhythm tone, he used it for leads or to accent other parts of the song. It’s hard to have a wah pedal on constantly and not have it either muddy up your tone, or make it way too sharp to the point where it pierces your ears.
@@SPIDERPANTERA your right. idk i though with just the wah in chain gave it some gravy,,,,anyway, did you ever get ahold of one of those aphex 104s? gotta get one, you will be amazed, you sound so good,
I'll answer your question with a question, it really depends on whether you are trying to replicate Dime's dry tone, or his wet tone? If you are just going for his overall tone and EQ then the flanger isn't required. However if you are going for accuracy pertaining to his live tone and the small details you can hear on the records, then having a flanger/doubler is going to give the tone a little drop of spice that will really get you closer to his true sound. Either route is totally fine, honestly I only ever use the flanger for specific songs where the flange effect is more noticable (i.e. Hellbound off of Reinventing The Steel)
@@odboys3108 Okay, yeah then having the flanger isn't too necessary. Definitely try to make sure you have a chorus pedal, Dime used that a lot on VDOP even on his distorted tone
@@odboys3108 No worries! The questions are great, and yes an overdrive pedal can definitely help. Basically you can use it two different ways: 1. Level all the way up and gain all the way, or almost all the way down. This will allow the pedal to act as a level boost in order to gain more volume by pushing the overdrive effect through the amp, this is useful for switching from rhythm to lead parts, or for getting a tighter more pushed sounding rhythm tone. 2. Using the overdrive pedal normally in order to add a little more fizz on top of the tone, this is useful for lead playing or just for trying to get the tone to sound a little crunchier. I would recommend the Tube Screamer, because it is a highly adaptable pedal and there is a lot of different things you can achieve with it. I personally use the Dark Matter so I can level boost and add just a little more fizz for lead parts.
Also I noticed if you flip most high output pickups 180 degrees they sound a bit more dime like I’ve done that with a few pickups with the exception of the dimebucker which I keep the right way because the tone is shaped already
Travis Bertolino yes I’ve heard about that a lot, apparently he flipped his Bill Lawrence pickups in the bridge position so the poles were reverse polarity, must have assisted his tone in being scooped but also cutting through
I'll be lucky if I can get my hands on one for a good price! A lot of the gear that Dime used for his live setup is hard to come by nowadays. Hence why I made this video using gear that is more widely available today. If I replicate his rig to the teeth, It would 100% sound more accurate but it would be wicked expensive after getting hands on all that vintage gear, especially the rack effects that Dime used, those were his favorite! Also, I will definitely do more Pantera covers in the future and upload them, I'm currently stationed away from home in the Navy so it's a little harder to put out content as often, but I will definitely get there soon!!!
XKratos500X Hello! And thank you for your kind words, everything in this video would pretty much be the same no matter what pickup you have, as long as it is a high-output pickup. So use this video as much as possible and you can make any fine tuning adjustments from there, and just use your ear as best as possible. It’s your greatest tool!
Viktoria yes I agree, you can get away with a lot of different pickup styles and sounds, but in the end the EQ and level boost is an essential aspect to any scooped tone, but especially Dimebag’s
Lacks a lot of mids. Cuz you scoop the shit out of them, he played with mids around 4 and scooped them with another eq in the fx loop there wasn't a scoop button and it takes some of the best frequencies out... you need at least 2 equalizers eqalizers to get close to his tone. The bass seems fine but im guessing it's not that loud since you're in front of it, in my experience bass boost is cool but becomes a piece of shit when you turn up the volume and is worst than kranking the bass.
If you noticed in my video, I made that point very clear with the opposite EQ of the amp compared to the pedal. I also don’t have access to the equipment he did. This video is not “How To 100% Absolutely Sound Exactly Like Dimebag Darrell”. This video is a display of how you can get pretty close with equipment that is easier to come by and doesn’t require you to bust your bank account wide open. I have been studying Dimebag’s rig, playing style, EQ, and overall techniques for everything he does for 6 years straight. I’m aware that he does not entirely scoop his mids, nor does he boost his bass to the heavens. But, for this amp, that is the best way to achieve something that sounds pretty darn close. As I said, I feel like I made that pretty clear in the video, so instead of ridiculing me for not being perfect on nailing his tone, consider the fact that I have limited access to equipment, and that to this day I am still finding new ways to get closer and closer to his tone. I wasn’t perfect in this video, and I’m not perfect now, without Dimebag’s hands attached to my arms, I’ll never sound exactly like him, but I can still try and get as close as possible and share the results with others. Constructive criticism is always welcome, as is the sharing of your opinions. However, when you state your disagreement so aggressively, it’s more difficult for me to listen to your feedback. Again, I don’t say this to brag or boost my ego, but I have been studying him for 6 years straight, and I graduated from college with an Audio Engineering degree… I think I at least have somewhat of a clue of what I’m doing.
