    Love these vids! Question. We have a Beardie but out summers are quite hot (mid 30s with humidity) as we stay near the coast. Do you ever recommend trimming a Beardie’s coat to make summer more manageable ?

    • @BraemoorBeardies
      @BraemoorBeardies  2 года назад +8

      no, like with any breed of dog, don't take them out during the hottest part of the day. Make sure there is shade and/ or that there's water your dog can cool off in (which only works if your dog actually goes into the water). A dog sweats through panting and through their foot pads, what type of coat they have will make very little difference to how hot they get. Dogs with darker coloured coats will attract more heat than dogs with pale coloured coats.
      One thing I have done during really hot days (near 40C ) at home is to hose down the dogs that struggle with the heat with the garden hose, their coat stays wet a while and will make them more comfortable. I have found that it's mostly the dogs of advanced age that cope less well with extreme heat. Of course when it is that hot we don't do any walks except for very early in the morning and very late at night and we keep walks very short.

      @@bhavaneshparbhoo9533 I disagree. I had a Beardie for 17 years (rip Desi) and I live about 2 blocks from the beach so it is warm from the months of May-September. Obviously we didn't take her out peak summer heat, but we trimmed her coat during those months so she was comfortable when staying outside with us in the backyard. She loved going to the groomers and was happy without all that hair. However it is up to personal preference, I suppose.

      You’ll know your self if he needs cut dogs do sweat in the paws but heat comes from the chest and leaves via the mouth when he pants if you have them run about mad then show them a river they’re straight in up to the neck to cool down I’ve had beardies for 32 years just lost my 16 year old spencer have kiwi nearly 5 and Maggie 8 months I’m in Scotland where they originate from not to many hot days but spencer had the thickest coat I’ve ever seen on a bearded collie it would knot at the skin and had to be cut a point of interest if you look at really old pictures of the breed they don’t have the curtain coat you see now I’ve had five all in 3 of them from working stock and they don’t have the coat that just keeps going till it’s on the floor how could a dog like that heard sheep all day people will say yeah there’s working and show dogs but a some point there was only working dogs with shorter coats when I used to shave spencer down to a number 5 honestly it was like a kid with new trainers he was so happy to get it off kiwi is nearly 5 never been cut as I said you’ll know best you see him every day and remember there’s nothing more attractive to a Beardie than wet mud and for some strange reason white bed sheets .

    Hey me and my parents are on a list to get a bearded collie pup but I got Some questions about the breed. 1. Do they break their toys and your furniture. 2. Do you have to shower them and bath them.

    • @BraemoorBeardies
      @BraemoorBeardies  2 года назад +2

      I think beardies are just lovely and in general they're not a very destructive breed, but you can't say a certain thing is true (or not) for all individuals of a certain breed.
      My dogs don't purposefully ruin their toys, but toys do get ripped up occasinally when there are 2 or 3 dogs playing with the same toy that's not made for tugging games. Some of the dogs I've had over the years have tried their teeth on the furniture when they were young, but most stick with dog toys and bones.
      Puppies of all breeds tend to learn the world around them by putting their teeth into it, so it's always something to watch out for and make sure your pup (of whatever breed) doesn't chew on or eat things that may be harmful to him or her.
      Good luck with your puppy!

      You need to train your puppy not to destroy things but give them something to chew while teething.
