I'm an antique lover and have several pieces of decor from my grandmother and mother that were handed down to me that I love (including a Wedgewood small vase) and they are still around because quality lasts. They were meant to be passed down to the next generation unlike the IKEA/Crate and Barrel/Wayfair/etc. items destined for the landfill. So true! I've got some vintage items from my grandparents (sadly all passed away now) and they're some of my most treasured decor. I have the mantel clock my grandparents bought when they moved into their first house, and now it's in my first home. It has pride of place on my mantelpiece and reminds me of them every day. I also have my grandmother's china set on display. You're right about the quality. I'm gradually replacing most of my decor with vintage and antique pieces (plus a few items I've made myself). The difference in materials and workmanship is shocking - even pricey modern items look cheap next to older ones. Plus, you can often get much better vintage or antique items for the same price or less.
I live in a 1970’s townhouse on the water. I absolutely abhor the overdone, tacky “seaside” decor. I have original midcentury modern furniture from my mother and mix it in with other contemporary furniture. My mom’s furniture is very sentimental to me and I love that my house decor is unexpected.
I have a two story houseboat, 2 bedrooms 2 bathroom, more of a floating house. And it is furnished with old family stuff, stuff I got when I lived and traveled in Europe and a touch of Ikea where it is needed. And yes no seaside decor. Years ago I stayed in an antique houseboat on the Seine and it was filled with antiques.
My word sign is „Do not throw anything out of the window“. I stole it in the 90s from an express train and fixed it under one of the windows in my first apartment. I grew up in a rural area and everybody from home was quite shocked when they came to visit me in the big city. They thought it was an official sign of the housing management - quite a rough neighborhood! :D It‘s now part of my gallery wall and I still love it.

I made the bad mistake of thinking I wanted a pink bathroom like I had twenty-five years ago. Turns out I don't like that anymore. Now he has to paint over it with Benjamin Moore Decorator's White. He had to convince me that I don't like pink bathrooms anymore. I told him on Saturday that I could wait until Christmas for him to repaint.Then told him Saturday night I could only look at the hideous colour until May, then Sunday morning I told him I couldn't take it any longer (looked like pepto bismol). Luckily, he likes the Decorator's White that I picked this time. He'll like it even more if I don't change my mind again! Word Signs are sometimes very worth it. -My teen was depressed, so I got him a sign for his bathroom that he sees every day that reminds him he is enough as he is, he is not alone, and he is always loved. It worked wonders to help him with his depression. Also, when I had little kids, the "dorm" and "kids" printed covers made sense because they are easy to wash (and I had less cash as a young mom), and little kids are impossibly hard on stuff. I am purging all of that now though.

I have a 70s trivet hanging over my kitchen sink it says "the hurrier i go the behinder i get" it always was in my grandma's kitchen, when it came into my ownership its wanted to stay there.
I got to the point getting the kids ready for school that I felt like their names were Come on and Hurry up. One day my son said, “I hate clocks, they make you late!” He was dead serious…and correct.
Our word sign says, "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all." For people with mental illness and physical issues, it reminds us that we aren't alone and the rest of our family will be there to support us.

From Alsace France with its very noticeable ceramic style I bought the little ceramic plaques that say WC and a tiny welcome one outside the front door. Pops of color and a bit of style. And I can talk about living in Germany and going over to Alsace that was 15 minutes away. My spouse and I went through a rough patch. We weren't having problems with each other, but we were both having so many issues that we had no time for each other anymore. On impulse I bought a sign that said "Work with me, people." One day I was embarrassed to have it, so I flipped it over. We both flipped it back over periodically when we needed the other's help with something, and I think that that sign was all we said to each other for about six months. (added in editing) I did get rid of that sign the moment the rough patch was over for both of us.
I have a bunch of kids so i have a sign that says "support wildlife, raise kids" 😂im alaskan so i take actual wildlife very seriously but i need the funny in winter

I own one word sign “ Agenda for the day: Let dog in, let dog out, let dog in, let dog out. On a shelf right by my back door where I let my dogs in and out. You get it, it is highly accurate. some days … yes that’s the bulk of my day. Wouldn’t trade it for the world

My coworker lives in a Victorian home and she turned an old “donuts” sign from an orchard she used to work at into a coat holder just by adding some hooks. It’s a super quirky idea and so her family. I love it

I have 2 word signs. But they mean a lot. One was a gift from my daughter that says “ Nana & Papa’s House” “Where cousins become best friends” . I’ve watched them since they were babies so that is so so true . My sister gave me another sign that says “My favorite people call me Nana”. I place that one in front of their pictures I display. Those are 2 sayings that “Love” for me. ❤️ I don’t normally like word signs as a general rule. Great video, you always help me!

I have exactly one word sign, unless you count a UK shipping forecast map (I don't) it reads "The more people I meet, the more I like my cat" I keep it because it's true. The thing that says tacky to me is cheap plastic plants, I hate them with a passion. There's nothing nice about a plastic pot with fake plastic pebbles surrounding some nylon and wire stalks with some sad, unconvincing daisy like thing stuck on top.

I get that people are busy, but unfortunately there are no short cuts and it’s not all about design commentary or opinions on styles. The biggest part of interior design is the science behind it that you learn in school and/or experience working in the field with educated designers and decorators. I try to share what I’ve learned to help people. We all have likes and dislikes concerning styles. Who cares. It’s what you like that matters, and not what someone else likes or tells you to like.
Where does one start shopping for a not sad gray couch? I had that problem when we bought our current one, and were in the market again. It needs to go in the room where my kids don't have to be nice to my antiques, but still want that antique vibe with out that antique care.
Finally someone who can articulate what I hate about chevron patterns and the like!!!! Seems like they are everywhere!!!! They make me want to throw up. And 2-color patterns are horrible in general. Too cheap to have real artwork! Thank you!!!

I don’t hate anyone’s home. I give my opinions but accept tastes and styles that are different than mine. That’s what formally trained interior are supposed to be like.
Investors are buying beautiful Brooklyn brownstones, completely gutting them, and making them uber modern. It looks so bad, and it's utterly heartbreaking. It offends my soul. Also- I wandered into Restoration Hardware in Chelsea (NYC) and the entire store was bougie expensive beige.
My pet peeve is stainless steel appliances in older homes. Don't try to make the house look like something it isn't! If it's old let it keep those details.
I visited a friend couple a few years ago. They had a quote in Danish (I'm Norwegian, so are they) on the bathroom wall. It says, in translation: "If you want to aggrovate your enemy, give his children trumpets."
I custom designed a neon word sign that reads "the six234 diner" as a riff on 50s diner signs. It is mounted on the kitchen soffit above our stove hood. It's not actually six234, but rather our address numerals. The neon is both red like our feature stove, blue like the main accent colour in our house, as well as a tiny bit of amber. My husband loves to cook, people love to eat his cooking. We don't tell anyone what the numerals mean when they inevitably ask. When the light bulb clicks on and they figure it out, it's worth every penny the sign cost me.
I have one word sign that i keep inside my corner cabinet (i find words distracting) it says make today so awesome that yesterday gets jealous. Well, this video lets me tick that box. Thanks for being willing to say the truth as comically as possible. Youre the best.

My background color is various shades of pale tan, but I combine this with dark walnut floors, walnut and cherry furniture, white trim, and (winter) red and purple in curtains and couch covers and metallic accents or (summer) many shades of green or darker brown in couch covers and curtains and carpeting with linen tones and flowers and stone and wood textures. Life is too short for my tans to be sad!

Another thing to look for on metal items is the welds. A quality welding job should be smooth and even all the parts, no splatters or sharp points.
So, I do have a Live Well, Laugh Often, and Love Much sign, but, I do also have the poem where it's from below it.

We are out and about allot. We just saw the wonderful Charo at Southpoint. You’ll often see us at finer restaurants around town.

My coworker lives in a Victorian home and she turned an old “donuts” sign from an orchard she used to work at into a coat holder just by adding some hooks. It’s a super quirky idea and so her family. I love it

I have 2 word signs. But they mean a lot. One was a gift from my daughter that says “ Nana & Papa’s House” “Where cousins become best friends” . I’ve watched them since they were babies so that is so so true . My sister gave me another sign that says “My favorite people call me Nana”. I place that one in front of their pictures I display. Those are 2 sayings that “Love” for me. ❤️ I don’t normally like word signs as a general rule. Great video, you always help me!

My word sign is in my kitchen it says "kitty biscuits, you need em, we knead em"
I have exactly one word sign, unless you count a UK shipping forecast map (I don't) it reads "The more people I meet, the more I like my cat" I keep it because it's true. The thing that says tacky to me is cheap plastic plants, I hate them with a passion. There's nothing nice about a plastic pot with fake plastic pebbles surrounding some nylon and wire stalks with some sad, unconvincing daisy like thing stuck on top.

Thanks so much for the lovely comment! Great design isn’t cut and paste. I get that people are busy, but unfortunately there are no short cuts and it’s not all about design commentary or opinions on styles. The biggest part of interior design is the science behind it that you learn in school and/or experience working in the field with educated designers and decorators. I try to share what I’ve learned to help people. We all have likes and dislikes concerning styles. Who cares. It’s what you like that matters, and not what someone else likes or tells you to like.

Where does one start shopping for a not sad gray couch? I had that problem when we bought our current one, and were in the market again. It needs to go in the room where my kids don't have to be nice to my antiques, but still want that antique vibe with out that antique care.
Finally someone who can articulate what I hate about chevron patterns and the like!!!! Seems like they are everywhere!!!! They make me want to throw up. And 2-color patterns are horrible in general. Too cheap to have real artwork! Thank you!!!

Our hairdresser has signs. It's her vibe. No criticism from me. Best hairdresser I've ever had. Not my thing at all. However, I do respect her decorating her home, her way. Investors are buying beautiful Brooklyn brownstones, completely gutting them, and making them uber modern. It looks so bad, and it's utterly heartbreaking. It offends my soul.
Also- I wandered into Restoration Hardware in Chelsea (NYC) and the entire store was bougie expensive beige.
My pet peeve is stainless steel appliances in older homes.
Don't try to make the house look like something it isn't! If it's old let it keep those details.
I visited a friend couple a few years ago. They had a quote in Danish (I'm Norwegian, so are they) on the bathroom wall. It says, in translation: "If you want to aggrovate your enemy, give his children trumpets."
I custom designed a neon word sign that reads "the six234 diner" as a riff on 50s diner signs. It is mounted on the kitchen soffit above our stove hood. It's not actually six234, but rather our address numerals. The neon is both red like our feature stove, blue like the main accent colour in our house, as well as a tiny bit of amber. My husband loves to cook, people love to eat his cooking. We don't tell anyone what the numerals mean when they inevitably ask. When the light bulb clicks on and they figure it out, it's worth every penny the sign cost me.
I have one word sign that i keep inside my corner cabinet (i find words distracting) it says make today so awesome that yesterday gets jealous. Well, this video lets me tick that box. Thanks for being willing to say the truth as comically as possible. Youre the best.

I was unwittingly succumbing to the sad beige aesthetic in my foyer, so my father gave me a wall display of wood roses...painted red. If you're reading this, thank you, Dad.
My background color is various shades of pale tan, but I combine this with dark walnut floors, walnut and cherry furniture, white trim, and (winter) red and purple in curtains and couch covers and metallic accents or (summer) many shades of green or darker brown in couch covers and curtains and carpeting with linen tones and flowers and stone and wood textures. Life is too short for my tans to be sad!

I agree about consistent style. I hate it when original beautiful Victorian exteriors house a soulless, coloured stripped out box! I realise I don't have any signs in my house except for an enamel sign saying "Toilet" on the downstairs loo door!
