Absolutely love that. Basketball itself is color blind. I'm 45 and grew up playing in the parks in Illinois. Not that I never heard a slur but I NEVER saw racism stop someone who could play from playing. Make a good pass, make a good shot and it doesn't matter we're just all basketball players.
Cowens played like his life depended on every play. This brutal, high energy, ferocious style of play not doubt shortened his playing career. Literally nobody today plays like this. Thing is he had a great long range shot, and just a step back would get him 3 instead of 2 now. I do not think his level of physicality would be appreciated by opponents today, but his skill would certainly translate to today.
I remember a guy at work saying what a beast Cowens would have been in today's game. I see why. He had an all-around but simple type of game, kinda like Joker does, no bells n whistles but extremely effective. Except Cowens is a much better defender. And the dude was a walking board.
Man I hear you, he literally took boards away from people. His very tough defense and brutal board game would create a bunch of flopping today. Much better defender, and much faster and quicker than Joker, but otherwise similar.
The Celtics would have won that series with a healthy Havlicek. They got ripped off in game 4 at MSG (rigged game) without him and still managed to go 7 games. They win that series in 7 and then sweep the Lakers (they took all 4 games that season).
I went to FSU when Cowens was playing there. The best game I ever saw him play was in 1972 against Jacksonville University in FSU's little Tully Gym that was led by super center Artis Gilmore. That was the only regular season game that JU lost before eventually losing to UCLA in the NCAA finals. Unfortunately for Cowens, FSU was on probation and barred from post-season play. Otherwise, they might have been playing against UCLA instead.
I like it but I thought you forgot to mention Havliceks injury in 73 and because of that the Celtics couldn’t keep up with NY. Too bad we missed out on a LA v Bos series
I was thinking the same thing! Havlicek being injured WAS the reason the Knicks were able to beat the Celts in 1973! Havlicek was on fire in the playoffs, he scored 54 in one of the games against the Hawks but injured himself in the Knicks series and could barely lift his right arm!
Actually, you meant in the 1983 NBA Playoffs that the Bucks swept the Celtics in the Eastern 2nd round or semifinals and then the Bucks lose to the Sixers in the Eastern Finals not the second round. Anyways, good video and keep it up.
He was a really great player and won two titles in the 1970s as he ran with the legend John havlicek..I watched his whole career and he's certainly a top fifty player of all-time..and he hung around long enough to play with Larry bird...he was a great shooter from the top of the key and a to tough rebounder..and Kareem seemed to have problems with him so did wilt because he ran all the time and shot from outside thus getting those guys away from the basket on defense
That punk said he didn't want Kobe when he was with Charlotte lol he traded him for vlade that's what I remember about him but I see he could hoop tho he obviously didn't have a high IQ basketball or otherwise I'm sorry I know Kobe was a high school player and that wasn't cool back then but still anyway RIP Kobe
Punk? Cowens was named Charlotte's coach one month before the 1996 Draft. He was not their GM. He didn't have a say in personnel. It was GM Bob Bass who didn't want to draft a high school kid, and traded Bryant to the Lakers for Vlade Divac. Before you make a nonsensical statement, do your research.
I did u can literally look up an interview of him saying he didn't want a high school kid on his team granted his job was probably on the line and he didn't want to take risk because it wasn't popular to take high school players at that time but still Kobe was one of the greatest I'm kinda bias so let's respectfully agree to disagree
@@krisharkleroad8 Kobe averaged 7 his rookie season and 41% from the field. It's easy to revise history. Calling Cowens a punk by that guy was totally uncalled for. New Coach, who probably was just regurgitating the GM's boardroom desires.
@@scottodonnell7121 You must be a CELTIC fan. COWENS was dirty as they come. He was one of those FAKE HUSTLE guys. Diving when there was a snowballs chance in HELL of making a play. Never should have won MVP. The NBA couldn't give it to KAREEM every year!!
I was a big Cowens fan, but the funny thing is on that particular play against the Bucks, the 24 second clock was about to expire, he would have been better off letting the shot clock expire!
Cowens is mad underrated. Speaking of rebounding, you should do a Nate Thurmond vid. Averaged 15 and 15 for his career
One the greatest centers of all time.
Way before my time but I always heard great things about Cowens
A lifetime Celtic fan, Dave Cowens is my favorite ever.
@@georgeesau3943 COWENS was garbage!!!
Big Red Head was the Heart and Soul of the Celtics teams of the 1970s. His intensity was something to behold.

Cheers buddy for considering my request.Thoroughly enjoyed the video and got a new perspective on Dave Cowens!!
What an athlete....that first step was wicked for a 6'9" player.
Dave cowens was one of my favorites as a youth growing up. And I am black saying this. 👍🏿👍🏿💯

Dave Cowens just wanted it more, that about sums it up. Prime Cowens along side a prime Bird would have been quite a sight to behold.
A prime cowens and an aging havlicek was awesome...such great great players
That was one of the best videos on a great NBA player I have seen.

A really beautiful and well done video on one of my childhood heroes
He was a complete player scorer, rebounder assists passing
One of my all time favorite celtics.
Dave Cowen like a Willis reed, they had no weaknesses, scoring points, rebounds, defending etc etc
Forgot what a badass Cowens was. Dude played on beast mode all the time.
Keep up the great work
He was the 1970 co-rookie of the year with Portland's Geoff Petrie the big scoring guard.
congratulations.... in this video you managed to feature all 3 of Daves right handed shots!

Dave Cowens was way overrated. And he was one the dirtiest players ever! He should never have won MVP. KAREEM had a much better year.
