As a kid I taught myself to shoot left-handed because of Dave Cowens. He was a hero. His high block turnaround jumper was money. Loved those 70s Celtics.
I am a big fan of Dave Cowens throughout his career. It was hard to find the Celtics or basketball on TV in those days. Thank you guys for this interview I really enjoyed it. I miss those days when the world was more wholesome
Ryan is right about John Havlicek. He belongs in the class with Jerry West and Oscar Robinson - and I'll add RICK BARRY - and HE DID guard ALL those guys on defense.
Was somewhat shocking to learn Johnny Most has not been inducted into the NBA HOF. He was the Celtics announcer from 1953-1990. He called some of the team's greatest games.
He’s in the Kurt Goudy wing of Naismith HOF. But unlike Chick Hearn, Johny has no placement in the BASKETBALL HOF. The diff between the 2 is, chick was technically a part of the Lakers front office but Considering the fact that BOTH chick & johny called more iconic plays than any other voices in history PLUS the hand they both had in popularizing the struggling sport via RADIO makes it shameful that Johny doesn’t sit along side chick in the Hall. Thx for the thoughtful comment. 🙂
60% under is 38% beyond the arc. Good centers are still valuable . And cowens jumpers from the elbows at 57 % is still. Valuable. . Offensive rebounds are one of the 4 factors.; with out the inside game the outside game is less effective. In his day it was the. Opposite. Dave earned every cent the hard way.
One yr,1974 I think,Celtics were matched up against Buffalo,Cowens scored 20 pts on 5 fouls in the 4th Qtr,Incredible 4th Qtr,Cowens never backed down from anyone,Cowens went toe to toe with the Best,he Set the tone for the great Celtics teams!
Dave and the Celtics should have had at least 2 more championships. If John Havlicek doesnt injure his shoulder in 1973 playoffs, Boston's wins that one. The best record in the NBA, record for most wins. And IMO the 3 point line SUCKS! It's ruined the game.
Todays NBA true basketball purists hate todays game. I don't watch it. I loved the game until the early 90's. Not a fan since. Also Dave Cowens is one of my favorite players of all time.
Ryan's what everyone wants today but doesn't get: he speaks from his gut, NEVER writes or yaps just to draw attention or manipulate readers/listeners/viewers. BRAVO Bob Ryan!
Well not quite... Don Nelson.. satch sanders.. don Chaney.. Hank finkel.. Steve kuberski. Jim ard.. Tom Boswell charlie Scott Dave bing and then many others who arrived with bing or after are still around
I remember watching Cowens in his last seasons. I missed his prime. The 3 point shot has been exploited & the lack of defense has made the game unwatchable.

Under discussed
One thing about this guy, he gave you all he had everytime he stepped on the floor. Much respect to Dave Cowens.

Thanks for tuning in! Dave still around New England. Great man.
I was living in buffalo abd i saw alot of nba teams especially celtic games back then
I'm glad Dave is giving Johnny shine.
Cowens was a big inspiration for me as a kid - do what you do with passion and commitment.
Ryan is right about John Havlicek. He belongs in the class with Jerry West and Oscar Robinson - and I'll add RICK BARRY - and HE DID guard ALL those guys on defense.
You are so right and I watched them all play
Absolutely!
Extremely entertaining and informative hearing stories from basketball legends.

@@NBAHistoryCLNS You nailed it.
John havlicek.. Johnny most... Dave cowens... Alot of legendary figures in Boston basketball for sure
John havlicek was so good he's a top 18 to 20 player alltime easy.. he was great at everything
Is it bad that he's as low as 22 on my list?
@@JohnnyRodgers3 no thats a good ranking.. I have him higher but hes usually listed between top 15 and 30 on all lists
Great to hear Dave's perspective on Larry Bird at the 37:50 mark

Nice interview. Would have liked to have heard his thoughts about the ABA too and the rivalry between the leagues

Dave Cowens is the coolest center of all time , ask Michael Cooper said" fuck statistics " Goat of cool
The game was way better back in Cowens day.
Dave Cowens back in the 70s was the toughest white center I ever know.
Take out the color adjective and I agree. I can't think of the center that played harder than Dave.
@@gregorywilson2124 You're absolutely right about taking out the adjective. He was a tenacious center for the Celtics who played hard every night.
Dave Cowen great rebounder; defender:: great shooter": role player nba basketball
And Barry bonds is one of the greatest black hitters I ever seen, get it? Moron
@@gregorywilson2124I have never seen any player, regardless of position , play harder than Dave. Especially for a legit star and HOFer.

Right with you on all that!
Totally agree, I can't stand the game today. The three point line is one of the worst changes to the game.
Shutup troll
I agree
@@frednesvet5046 your right
Awesome, I love Hondo, cowens, JoJo....Ryan is annoying but very knowledgeable
I like Bob myself 🤷♀️
He is very knowledgeable

I always preferred the Celtics with Cowens,Havlichek, White,Nelson and Silas over the Bird years .
Not prefered but loved just as mu ch just as great
Well they were kind of an undersized team, that's for sure.
Bob Ryan covering for Chick "Laker" Hearn, over Johnny "Stanislavsky" Most. lol
Am I mistaken, or is Dave the last surviving member of those 70s teams?

Not to mention soft, load managing, flopping, super team forcing, half court jacking.... What were we talking about 😂?
@@RemoWilliams1227 yeah, what you said
I do remember Silas always pulling at his wristbands. Didn't know him and Nelson were the Fred Biletnikof's of the NBA. Funny stuff.
Yeah nelson did that a ton too
