what I love about The Enemy Within is that it finally made a truly relatable Joker. Not on a borderline philosophical level of human relatability, but on a personal level of emotional or mental damage.
Yes he's deranged, but not for the sake of being so. This Joker doesn't just want to see the world burn, he just wanted a friend and was too mentally damaged to handle the rejection.

I've always liked the idea that whatever made Joker's skin pale and hair green also basically deadened the nerves in his body or just gave him an insanely high tolerance or pain and a mild healing factor. This is easily the best portrayal of the Joker out there.
In the beginning, John was just your run of the mill asylum inmate with a huge obsession with Bruce Wayne. When he met Bruce personally, his obsession with him grew. He always knew that being friends with Bruce was too good to be true, but he didn't care. He just hung on as long as it lasted. As the series went on he started to embrace the darkness inside him (aka The Enemy Within). In this scenario, the trust between Bruce and him along with knowing he was Batman led him to try and emulate him. In the end he cracked anyway, but despite his mental illness and everything he had done that night, Bruce acknowledged him as his best friend. John never actually thought Bruce would be crazy enough to see him as a friend but yeah.
In the end, true friendship always prevails despite anything that happens.

I never actually thought that Bruce really cared for John. Not as a friend at least. The guy had clearly serious issues. Bruce just wanted him to be cool, but not to be his friend. If he cared for him as a friend he wouldn't have used him to get in the pact and try to arrest him, bane and all the others. Saying that they are friends is just a lie or an hypocrite/fanboyish move. He still sends him to Arkham so how can he be his friend? It's better to either stay quite or say the truth in that moment and that is they were never friends. John was always a criminal and Bruce just used him to arrest the pact and joker himself. Like he says in that option he was a mean to an end.

I had such a hard time experiencing this. I knew who I was dealing with. I knew John Doe was no mere John Doe. There was only one way this could end, but I wanted so badly or that not to be true. John wasn't a bad guy. He was misled. John was a stray creature trying to find his way towards a destination he didn't know he was going and unfortunately that destination was Joker. His heart was in the right place but unfortunately the right place that keeps most of our hearts warm set his on fire and from the ashes arose the maniac with a fiery passion for blood. But along the way I couldn't help but care for this man. I was witnessing first hand his mind deteriorate into madness as the cards were stacked against him and I wanted to be there for him. I wanted to trust him. So in the end - in the culmination of everything we've been through together - after he's finally proven that he can't be helped and flourishes in his chaos, when he turns to me and asks if I truly thought of him as a friend and I say that I did and he stares me dead in the eye and tells me that I'm one messed up guy... what am I supposed to do?

He had different lunacy in TellTale version.
Even the reporter turned to be villain so perhaps they'd make something different with Jason Todd.
Perhaps his parents are alive then kil led by thugs and became Red Hood who's seeking for revenge.
