Even though Chad was weight drained, I believe Dre beats him at any weight on any night. Seems like all of Ward's opponents underestimated him...you could see everyone he fought surprised at how physically strong he was, they didn't expect it because he wasn't a really big puncher. He is one of the greats though, really understands how to control a fight.

I think Dawson's weight drain had a lot to do with the extent of Ward's dominance in this fight. Not saying Dawson would have won at 175 but draining those 7 pounds does make a huge difference in strength and performance, and Dawson would have no doubt performed better at 175.
Hence, why Hearn is now trying to get Bivol to come down to 168 for the Canelo rematch.

Dawson never used his jab to set up his offense... Very reactional to what Ward was doing... No body work was done by Dawson when being pressed... I see why Dawson never reached his full potential... Dawson had a great stance, hand speed and size. The tools for the job was in Dawson's tool bag... He never used the right tools

    • @mikehammer1777

What you fail to realize is distance management...you can have "the jab, the hand speed, the power"... if your opponent is managing distance, you will lose and get pummeled. Watch round 6 again, that was the round Ward established his imprisoning control of distance. Ward used one shot and slip, two shots and slip, level changes, to confuse Dawson. Dawson was guessing from that round on those single double slips always set up combinations.....and that was Andre's strategy.

kovalev had the A side Ward had the B side, I believe he was told not to run and if he did not engaged more they would judge the fight for Kovalev. Ward did not run and fought right in the hands of Kovalev, Ward found himself in the belly of the beast and fought out of it, win for Ward. Now Ward has the A side the fight might look just like this one...

He was a career light-heavy, Ward wasn't a big enough name to bring in a huge payday and beyond that, Andre had fought at light heavy in the Olympics so it should have been him moving up to challenge Dawson. Sorry but Chad was dumb to take this and it practically ruined his career.

I know the guy who discovered him and became his manager at Ring One on Congress Ave.. but they had a falling out with Chad because he wanted to be a thug too instead of a champ.
New Haven may be home to yale University but it's also the murder capital of CT. It's a crime ridden city outside of Yale. He even has the 5 star tattoo on his back. Think about it

@@too_sturdy I don't think it was that. I think it was because he was switching trainers too much, and he had a bad attitude. It takes time for a trainer to evaluate their fighter; their strengths their weaknesses, getting their fighter to fight at their absolute best. Everytime Chad was hiring a new trainer he was going back to square 1, the trainer evaluating Dawson and seeing how he's like, and that trainer could be making Chad fight the wrong way at first. It takes like 5 or 6 fights for a trainer to really understand their boxer, and in some cases that trainer is just not good. So Chad wasn't improving, he was actually regressing every-time he got a new trainer (although in Chad's case he had like 4 elite trainers that would have made him fight to his potential). Chad should have had a permanent trainer before he won the title, he choose Floyd Mayweather Sr and he should have stuck with him.
