  • Should I Use Heat Or Ice On My Back- Ask A Physio!
WHEN TO USE HEAT VS. WHEN TO USE ICE FOR LOWER BACK PAIN:
When you have lower back sometimes you hear your Gp or your friend telling you to put on a heat pack, while others will say ice instead…
Both heat and cold therapy are beneficial and can provide effective relief from lower back pain.
If you are like many people, though, you might not know when to use heat vs. when to use ice for lower back pain to achieve the maximum benefit.
If that is the question you have today then look no further because this is exactly what we are discussing today!
In this channel we have a whole playlist delegated for back pain, even though the title might not fit you, I still highly recommend you to check them out as I'm sure, there will be exercises in those videos that will be beneficial for you right now.

There are many manual techniques that a physiotherapist can perform that simply cannot be replicated by your own. If these techniques are not done correctly or are done without proper diagnosis and/ or guidance, they could make things worse. If any of these techniques are causing more discomfort, STOP immediately and seek guidance from your doctor or other qualified health professional with any questions you have regarding your health or medical condition.
It is important to remember that the human body is the product of a whole conglomeration of factors. Comprehensive and reliable diagnosis of all movement and body characteristics is a complex process that facilitates the identification of the sources of problems and their nature and therefore, the diagnosis should only be performed by a person with broad professional training who specializes in diagnosing and treating medical issues. Diagnosis or treatment without individual consultation by a suitable medical professional may lead to incorrect conclusions in the diagnosis and in the treatment processes.

Hi Melanie, are your recommendations for using heat/cold only suitable for lower back pain? If so, why? Thank you so much for your Videos, i love them!

When you have back pain from exercise or exertion, use cold therapy immediately after the activity to reduce tissue damage, inflammation, and pain as it is an acute case and you can't use heat for an inflammation but if it is chronic use heat such as hot packs as it causes vasodilatation and promote tissue healing

@@Pathologyformedicalstudents thank you for the summary, but that was not the question. I wanted to know why you are only talking about pain in the lower back. Is this transferable to other regions of the body? Is there any reason why you are specifically mentioning the lower back pain?

@@jorakete7038 May be because that heat is done to a localized area and lower back pain is the common complain of all people and general term used and if you mean referred pain to buttocks or legs it is due to pinched nerves which compress nerves so it needs other types of techniques like traction and manipulation TENS electrotherapy for pain aiming to centralize the referred pain from the back due to herniation or bulge for example
